We introduce a new way of counting numerical semigroups, namely by their maximum primitive, and show its relation with the counting of numerical semigroups by their Frobenius number. We show that these two ways of counting are Möbius transforms of one another. We also establish that almost all numerical semigroups with large enough maximum primitive satisfy Wilf's conjecture. A crucial step in the proof is a result of independent interest: a numerical semigroup $S$ with multiplicity $\mathrm{m}$ such that $|S\cap (\mathrm{m},2 \mathrm{m})|\geq \sqrt{2\mathrm{m}}$ satisfies Wilf's conjecture.
We study Wilf's conjecture for numerical semigroups $S$ such that the second least generator $a_2$ of $S$ satisfies $a_2>\frac{c(S)+μ(S)}{3}$, where $c(S)$ is the conductor and $μ(S)$ the multiplicity of $S$. In particular, we show that for these semigroups Wilf's conjecture holds when the multiplicity is bounded by a quadratic function of the embedding dimension.
To a numerical semigroup $S$, Eliahou associated a number $E(S)$ and proved that numerical semigroups for which the associated number is non negative satisfy Wilf's conjecture. The search for counterexamples for the conjecture of Wilf is therefore reduced to semigroups which have an associated negative Eliahou number. Eliahou mentioned $5$ numerical semigroups whose Eliahou number is $-1$. The examples were discovered by Fromentin who observed that these are the only ones with negative Eliahou number among the over $10^{13}$ numerical semigroups of genus up to $60$. We prove here that for any …
This paper aims to contribute to validate, for numerical semigroups of reasonably large genus, the so-called Conjecture of Wilf. There is no counter-example for the conjecture among the over 3*10^{10} numerical semigroups of genus up to 60, as it has been computationally verified by Fromentin and Hivert. The computations use the idea of parsing a semigroups tree, making tests in each node. As a mean to combine parsing of the semigroups tree with known theoretical results, we introduce the concept of cutting semigroup. Assume that there exists a property on numerical semigroups that implies tha…
The aim of this paper is to propose an extension of the Wilf conjecture to semimodules over a numerical semigroup through a new approach toward the solution of the Wilf conjecture on numerical semigroups. The key point is the introduction of a new invariant that we call Wilf function of a semigroup that can be also defined for a semimodule over the semigroup. We also study the relation of the Wilf function of a semigroup and the Wilf function of certain semimodules associated to a gap of the semigroup. As a consequence, we obtain an alternative conjecture which also implies the Wilf conjecture…
A numerical semigroup is a submonoid of $\mathbb N$ with finite complement in $\mathbb N$. A generalized numerical semigroup is a submonoid of $\mathbb{N}^{d}$ with finite complement in $\mathbb{N}^{d}$. In the context of numerical semigroups, Wilf's conjecture is a long standing open problem whose study has led to new mathematics and new ways of thinking about monoids. A natural extension of Wilf's conjecture, to the class of $\mathcal C$-semigroups, was proposed by García-García, Marín-Aragón, and Vigneron-Tenorio. In this paper, we propose a different generalization of Wilf's conjecture, to…
Let S $\subseteq$ N be a numerical semigroup with multiplicity m = min(S \ {0}) and conductor c = max(N \ S) + 1. Let P be the set of primitive elements of S, and let L be the set of elements of S which are smaller than c. A longstand-ing open question by Wilf in 1978 asks whether the inequality |P||L| $\ge$ c always holds. Among many partial results, Wilf's conjecture has been shown to hold in case |P| $\ge$ m/2 by Sammartano in 2012. Using graph theory in an essential way, we extend the verification of Wilf's conjecture to the case |P| $\ge$ m/3. This case covers more than 99.999% of numeric…
Given coprime positive integers $g_1 < \ldots < g_e$, the Frobenius number $F=F(g_1,\ldots,g_e)$ is the largest integer not representable as a linear combination of $g_1,\ldots,g_e$ with non-negative integer coefficients. Let $n$ denote the number of all representable non-negative integers less than $F$; Wilf conjectured that $F+1 \le e n$. We provide bounds for $g_1$ and for the type of the numerical semigroup $S=\langle g_1,\ldots,g_e \rangle$ in function of $e$ and $n$, and use these bounds to prove that $F+1 \le q e n$, where $q= \left \lceil \frac{F+1}{g_1} \right \rceil$, and $F+1 \le e …
Let $S\subseteq \mathbb{N}$ be a numerical semigroup with multiplicity $m$, embedding dimension $ν$ and conductor $c=f+1=qm-ρ$ for some $q,ρ\in\mathbb{N}$ with $ρ<m$. Let Ap$(S,m) = \{w\_0<w_1 < \ldots < w_{m-1}\}$ be the Apéry set of $S$. The aim of this paper is to prove Wilf's Conjecture in some special cases. First, we prove that if $w_{m-1}\geq w_1+w_α$ and $(2+\frac{α-3}{q})ν\geq m$ for some $1<α<m-1$, then $S$ satisfies Wilf's Conjecture. Then, we prove the conjecture in the following cases: $(2+\frac{1}{q})ν\geq m$, $m-ν\leq 5$ and $m=9$. Finally, the conjecture is proved if $w_{m-1} \…
In this paper we introduce a particular semigroup transform $\mathcal{A}$ that fixes the invariants involved in Wilf's conjecture, except the embedding dimension. It also allows one to arrange the set of not ordinary and not irreducible numerical semigroups in a family of rooted trees. We study also another transform, having similar features, that has been introduced by Bras-Amorós, and we make a comparison of them. In particular we study the behaviour of the embedding dimension under the action of such transforms, providing some consequences concerning Wilf's conjecture.
For a numerical semigroup S $\subseteq$ N with embedding dimension e, conductor c and left part L = S $\cap$ [0, c -- 1], set W (S) = e|L| -- c. In 1978 Wilf asked, in equivalent terms, whether W (S) $\ge$ 0 always holds, a question known since as Wilf's conjecture. Using a closely related lower bound W 0 (S) $\le$ W (S), we show that if |L| $\le$ 12 then W 0 (S) $\ge$ 0, thereby settling Wilf's conjecture in this case. This is best possible, since cases are known where |L| = 13 and W 0 (S) = --1. Wilf's conjecture remains open for |L| $\ge$ 13.
Let S $\subseteq$ N be a numerical semigroup with multiplicity m, conductor c and minimal generating set P. Let L = S $\cap$ [0, c -- 1] and W(S) = |P||L| -- c. In 1978, Herbert Wilf asked whether W(S) $\ge$ 0 always holds, a question known as Wilf's conjecture and open since then. A related number W0(S), satisfying W0(S) $\le$ W(S), has recently been introduced. We say that S is a near-miss in Wilf's conjecture if W0(S) < 0. Near-misses are very rare. Here we construct infinite families of them, with c = 4m and W0(S) arbitrarily small, and we show that the members of these families still sati…
Let S $\subseteq$ N be a numerical semigroup with multiplicity m = min(S \ {0}), conductor c = max(N \ S) + 1 and minimally generated by e elements. Let L be the set of elements of S which are smaller than c. Wilf conjectured in 1978 that |L| is bounded below by c/e. We show here that if c $\le$ 3m, then S satisfies Wilf's conjecture. Combined with a recent result of Zhai, this implies that the conjecture is asymptotically true as the genus g(S) = |N \ S| goes to infinity. One main tool in this paper is a classical theorem of Macaulay on the growth of Hilbert functions of standard graded algeb…
In this paper we describe an algorithm visiting all numerical semigroups up to a given genus using a well suited representation. The interest of this algorithm is that it fits particularly well the architecture of modern computers allowing very large optimizations: we obtain the number of numerical semigroups of genus g 67 and we confirm the Wilf conjecture for g 60.
We give an algorithm to determine whether Wilf's conjecture holds for all numerical semigroups with a given multiplicity $m$, and use it to prove Wilf's conjecture holds whenever $m \le 18$. Our algorithm utilizes techniques from polyhedral geometry, and includes a parallelizable algorithm for enumerating the faces of any polyhedral cone up to orbits of an automorphism group. We also introduce a new method of verifying Wilf's conjecture via a combinatorially-flavored game played on the elements of a certain finite poset.
We discuss a new memory-efficient depth-first algorithm and its implementation that iterates over all elements of a finite locally branched lattice. This algorithm can be applied to face lattices of polyhedra and to various generalizations such as finite polyhedral complexes and subdivisions of manifolds, extended tight spans and closed sets of matroids. Its practical implementation is very fast compared to state-of-the-art implementations of previously considered algorithms. Based on recent work of Bruns, García-Sánchez, O'Neill and Wilburne, we apply this algorithm to prove Wilf's conjecture…
For a numerical semigroup, we encode the set of primitive elements that are larger than its Frobenius number and show how to produce in a fast way the corresponding sets for its children in the semigroup tree. This allows us to present an efficient algorithm for exploring the tree up to a given genus. The algorithm exploits the second nonzero element of a numerical semigroup and the particular pseudo-ordinary case in which this element is the conductor.
An automaton is said to be synchronizing if there is a word in the transitions which sends all states of the automaton to a single state. Research on this topic has been driven by the Černý conjecture, one of the oldest and most famous problems in automata theory, according to which a synchronizing $n$-state automaton has a reset word of length at most $(n-1)^2$. The transitions of an automaton generate a transformation monoid on the set of states, and so an automaton can be regarded as a transformation monoid with a prescribed set of generators. In this setting, an automaton is synchronizing …
