Vacuum-gap capacitors have recently attracted significant interest in superconducting circuit platforms due to their compact design and exceptionally low dielectric losses in the microwave regime. Their intrinsic ability to support mechanical vibrational modes makes them well-suited for circuit optomechanics. However, precise control over the gap size and the realization of high-coherence mechanical modes remain longstanding challenges. Here, we present a detailed and scalable fabrication process for vacuum-gap capacitors that support ultra-high-coherence mechanical motion, exhibit low microwave loss, and occupy a significantly smaller footprint compared to conventional planar geometries. By employing a planarized $\mathrm{SiO}_2$ sacrificial layer, we achieve vacuum gaps on the order of 150 nm. Using this platform, we have recently demonstrated ground-state cooling and motion squeezing of a mechanical oscillator with a quality factor of 40 million, a 100-fold improvement compared to prior works, as well as a single-photon optomechanical coupling rate of approximately 15Hz. Additional achievements include the realization of an optomechanical topological lattice with 24 sites and the observation of quantum collective dynamics in a mechanical hexamer. Collectively, these results underscore the potential of vacuum-gap capacitors as a platform for coupling superconducting qubits to mechanical systems, enabling quantum storage, and probing gravitational effects in quantum mechanics.
We propose a novel approach for microwave and optical fields entanglement using an electrical capacitor loaded with graphene plasmonic waveguide. In the proposed scheme, a quantum microwave signal of frequency f_m drives the electrical capacitor, while an intensive optical field (optical pump) of frequency f_1 is launched to the graphene waveguide as surface plasmon polariton (i.e., SPP) mode. The two fields interact by the means of electrically modulating the graphene optical conductivity. It then follows that an upper and lower SPP sideband modes (of f_2 = f_1 + f_m and f_3 = f_1 -f_m freque…
We have fabricated superconducting microwave resonators in a lumped element geometry using single crystal silicon dielectric parallel plate capacitors with C >2 pF. Aluminum devices with resonant frequencies between 4.0 and 6.5 GHz exhibited an average internal quality factor Q_i of 2 x 10^5 in the single photon excitation regime at T = 20 mK. Attributing all the observed loss to the capacitive element, our measurements correspond to a loss tangent of intrinsic silicon of 5 x 10^-6. This level of loss is an order of magnitude lower than is currently observed in structures incorporating amorpho…
We present the design of a passive, on-chip microwave circulator based on a ring of superconducting tunnel junctions. We investigate two distinct physical realisations, based on either Josephson junctions (JJ) or quantum phase slip elements (QPS), with microwave ports coupled either capacitively (JJ) or inductively (QPS) to the ring structure. A constant bias applied to the center of the ring provides the symmetry breaking (effective) magnetic field, and no microwave or rf bias is required. We find that this design offers high isolation even when taking into account fabrication imperfections a…
The investigation of two-level-state (TLS) loss in dielectric materials and interfaces remains at the forefront of materials research in superconducting quantum circuits. We demonstrate a method of TLS loss extraction of a thin film dielectric by measuring a lumped element resonator fabricated from a superconductor-dielectric-superconductor trilayer. We extract the dielectric loss by formulating a circuit model for a lumped element resonator with TLS loss and then fitting to this model using measurements from a set of three resonator designs: a coplanar waveguide resonator, a lumped element re…
In this study, a circuitry model of the coupling of a qubit to reservoir modes is defined to clearly determine the effect of the reservoir modes on the qubit decay and dephasing rates. The main goal is to theoretically calculate the dephasing and decay rate of a qubit, particularly due to the circuitry effect. Firstly, the Hamiltonian of the system (coupling of a qubit to the reservoir modes) is defined and used to derive the time evolution of the density matrix for the qubit energy levels. By calculating the qubit level density evolutions, one can estimate at which frequency the maximum coupl…
To improve the performance of the traditional tripartite opto-mechanical system, we design a developed opto-mechanical tripartite system in which all subsystems such as an optical cavity, microresonator, and microcavity modes are coupled directly to each other. This system is analyzed quantum mechanically, and its dynamics of motion is studied by the Heisenberg-Langevin equations. Notably, the originality of this work contributes to embedding the spherical capacitor in the optical cavity where the plasmon-plasmon interaction between capacitor plates manipulates the internal electric field. The…
Frequency conversion between microwave and optical photons is a key enabling technology to create links between superconducting quantum processors and to realize distributed quantum networks. We propose a microwave-optical transduction platform based on long-coherence-time superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities coupled to electro-optic optical cavities to mitigate the loss mechanisms that limit the attainment of high conversion efficiency. In the design, we optimize the microwave-optical field overlap and optical coupling losses, while achieving long microwave and optical photon lifeti…
We report on the generic classical electric circuit modeling that describes standard single-tone microwave optomechanics. Based on a parallel RLC circuit in which a mechanical oscillator acts as a movable capacitor, derivations of analytical expressions are presented, including key features such as the back-action force, the input-output expressions, and the spectral densities associated, all in the classical regime. These expressions coincide with the standard quantum treatment performed in optomechanics when the occupation number of both cavity and mechanical oscillator are large. Besides, t…
We present a scheme for controlling the decoherence of a linear superposition of two coherent states with opposite phases in a high-Q microwave cavity, based on the injection of appropriately prepared ``probe'' and ``feedback'' Rydberg atoms, improving the one presented in [D. Vitali et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 2442 (1997)]. In the present scheme, the information transmission from the probe to the feedback atom is directly mediated by a second auxiliary cavity. The detection efficiency for the probe atom is no longer a critical parameter, and the decoherence time of the superposition state ca…
We report on the characterization of microwave loss of thin aluminum oxide films at low temperatures using superconducting lumped resonators. The oxide films are fabricated using plasma oxidation of aluminum and have a thickness of 5 nm. We measure the dielectric loss versus microwave power for resonators with frequencies in the GHz range at temperatures from 54 to 303 mK. The power and temperature dependence of the loss is consistent with the tunneling two-level system theory. These results are relevant to understanding decoherence in superconducting quantum devices. The obtained oxide films …
Electromagnetic waves are ideal candidates for transmitting information in a quantum network as they can be routed rapidly and efficiently between locations using optical fibers or microwave cables. Yet linking quantum-enabled devices with cables has proved difficult because most cavity or circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) systems used in quantum information processing can only absorb and emit signals with a specific frequency and temporal envelope. Here we show that the temporal and spectral content of microwave-frequency electromagnetic signals can be arbitrarily manipulated with a flex…
Spins in solids are an ideal candidate to act as a memory and interface with superconducting qubits due to their long coherence times. We spectroscopically investigate erbium-167-doped yttrium orthosilicate as a possible microwave-addressed memory employing its microwave frequency transitions that occur without applying an external magnetic field. We obtain coherence times of 380 $μ$s in a ground state spin transition and 1.48 ms in an excited state spin transition. This is 28 times longer compared to previous zero field measurements, as well as 200 times longer than a previous microwave memor…
The existence of vacuum fluctuations is one of the most important predictions of modern quantum field theory. In the vacuum state, fluctuations occurring at different frequencies are uncorrelated. However, if a parameter in the Lagrangian of the field is modulated by an external pump, vacuum fluctuations stimulate spontaneous downconversion processes, creating squeezing between modes symmetric with respect to half of the frequency of the pump. Here we show that by double parametric pumping of a superconducting microwave cavity, it is possible to generate another fundamental type of correlation…

We examine quantum statistics of optical photons emitted from atomic ensembles which are classically driven and simultaneously coupled to a two-level atom via microwave photon exchange. Quantum statistics and correlations are analyzed by calculating second order coherence degree, von Neumann entropy, spin squeezing for multi-particle entanglement, as well as genuine two and three-mode entanglement parameters for steady state and non-equilibrium situations. Coherent transfer of population between the radiation modes and quantum state mapping between the two-level atom and the optical modes are …
We design and fabricate two types of superconducting niobium coplanar waveguide microwave resonators with different coupling capacitors on high purity Si substrates. Their microwave transmissions are measured at the temperatures of 20 mK. It is found that these two types of resonators possess significantly-different loaded quality factors; one is $5.6\times{10}^{3}$, and the other is $4.0\times{10}^{4}$. The measured data are fitted well by classical ABCD matrix approach. We found that the transmission peak deviates from the standard Lorentizian with a frequency broadening.
Efficient and reversible optical to microwave coherent transducers are required to enable entanglement transfer between superconducting qubits and light for quantum networks. Rare-earth-doped crystals that possess narrow optical and spin transitions are a promising way to implement these devices. Current approaches use ground-state electron spin transitions that have coherence lifetimes ($T_2$) often limited by spin flip-flop processes and/or spectral diffusion, even at very low temperatures. Here, we investigate spin coherence in an optically excited state of an Er$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ crystal…
We report on a planar microwave resonator providing arbitrarily polarized oscillating magnetic fields that enable selective excitation of the electronic spins of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. The polarization plane is parallel to the surface of diamond, which makes the resonator fully compatible with (111)-oriented diamond. The field distribution is spatially uniform in a circular area with a diameter of 4 mm, and a near-perfect circular polarization is achieved. We also demonstrate that the original resonance frequency of 2.8 GHz can be varied in the range of 2-3.2 GHz by introduc…
Solid-state electronic spins are extensively studied in quantum information science, as their large magnetic moments offer fast operations for computing and communication, and high sensitivity for sensing. However, electronic spins are more sensitive to magnetic noise, but engineering of their spectroscopic properties, e.g. using clock transitions and isotopic engineering, can yield remarkable spin coherence times, as for electronic spins in GaAs, donors in silicon and vacancy centres in diamond. Here we demonstrate simultaneously induced clock transitions for both microwave and optical domain…
The implementation of quantum technologies in electronics leads naturally to the concept of coherent single-electron circuits, in which a single charge is used coherently to provide enhanced performance. In this work, we propose a coherent single-electron device that operates as an electrically-tunable capacitor. This system exhibits a sinusoidal dependence of the capacitance with voltage, in which the amplitude of the capacitance changes and the voltage period can be tuned by electric means. The device concept is based on double-passage Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana interferometry of a co…
We propose an efficient scheme for the generation and the manipulation of Raman fields in an homogeneously broadened atomic vapor in a closed three levels $Λ$-configuration. The key concept in generating the Raman and sub-Raman fields efficiently at lower optical densities involve the microwave induced atomic coherence of the lower levels. We show explicitly that, generation efficiency of the Raman fields can be controlled by manipulating the coherences via phase and amplitude of the microwave field.
We demonstrate enhanced relaxation and dephasing times of transmon qubits, up to ~ 60 μs by fabricating the interdigitated shunting capacitors using titanium nitride (TiN). Compared to lift-off aluminum deposited simultaneously with the Josephson junction, this represents as much as a six-fold improvement and provides evidence that previous planar transmon coherence times are limited by surface losses from two-level system (TLS) defects residing at or near interfaces. Concurrently, we observe an anomalous temperature dependent frequency shift of TiN resonators which is inconsistent with the pr…
Trapped atomic ions have been successfully used for demonstrating basic elements of universal quantum information processing (QIP). Nevertheless, scaling up of these methods and techniques to achieve large scale universal QIP, or more specialized quantum simulations remains challenging. The use of easily controllable and stable microwave sources instead of complex laser systems on the other hand promises to remove obstacles to scalability. Important remaining drawbacks in this approach are the use of magnetic field sensitive states, which shorten coherence times considerably, and the requireme…
Rydberg atoms excited by cold blackbody radiation are shown to display long-lived quantum coherences on timescales of tens of picoseconds. By solving non-Markovian equations of motion with no free parameters we obtain the time evolution of the density matrix, and demonstrate that the blackbody-induced temporal coherences manifest as slowly decaying (100 ps) quantum beats in time-resolved fluorescence. An analytic model shows the dependence of the coherent dynamics on the energy splitting between atomic eigenstates, transition dipole moments, and coherence time of the radiation. Experimental de…
This article mainly focuses on one of the important phenomena in the quantum realm called entanglement. It is clear that entanglement created due to the nonlinearity property has been arisen by some different methods. This study in contrast uses a unique approach in which a cryogenic low noise amplifier is designed and using the transistor nonlinearity effect (third-order nonlinearity) entangled microwave photons are created. It is supposed that the low noise amplifier contains two coupled oscillators resonating with different frequencies. The mentioned oscillators are coupled to each other th…

Er$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ crystal is a promising candidate with a great variety of its potential applications in quantum information processing and quantum communications ranging from optical/microwave quantum memories to circuit QED and microwave-to-optics frequency converters. Some of the above listed applications require ultra-low temperature environment, i.e., temperatures $T\lesssim0.1~$K. Most of the experiments with erbium doped crystals have been so far carried out at temperatures above 1.5~K. Therefore, only little information is known about Er$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ coherence properties at…
Single-photon detection is an essential component in many experiments in quantum optics, but remains challenging in the microwave domain. We realize a quantum non-demolition detector for propagating microwave photons and characterize its performance using a single-photon source. To this aim we implement a cavity-assisted conditional phase gate between the incoming photon and a superconducting artificial atom. By reading out the state of this atom in single shot, we reach an internal photon detection fidelity of 71%, limited by the coherence properties of the qubit. By characterizing the cohere…
Interfacing between various elements of a computer - from memory to processors to long range communication - will be as critical for quantum computers as it is for classical computers today. Paramagnetic rare earth doped crystals, such as Nd$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ (YSO), are excellent candidates for such a quantum interface: they are known to exhibit long optical coherence lifetimes (for communication via optical photons), possess a nuclear spin (memory) and have in addition an electron spin that can offer hybrid coupling with superconducting qubits (processing). Here we study two of these three …
Electron and nuclear spins have good coherence times and an ensemble of spins is a promising candidate for a quantum memory. By employing holographic techniques via field gradients a single ensemble may be used to store many bits of information. Here we present a coherent memory using a pulsed magnetic field gradient, and demonstrate the storage and retrieval of up to 100 weak 10 GHz coherent excitations in collective states of an electron spin ensemble. We further show that such collective excitations in the electron spin can then be stored in nuclear spin states, which offer coherence times …

The ability to engineer nonreciprocal interactions is an essential tool in modern communication technology as well as a powerful resource for building quantum networks. Aside from large reverse isolation, a nonreciprocal device suitable for applications must also have high efficiency (low insertion loss) and low output noise. Recent theoretical and experimental studies have shown that nonreciprocal behavior can be achieved in optomechanical systems, but performance in these last two attributes has been limited. Here we demonstrate an efficient, frequency-converting microwave isolator based on …
Quantum computers can potentially achieve an exponential speedup versus classical computers on certain computational tasks, as recently demonstrated in systems of superconducting qubits. However, these qubits have large footprints due to their large capacitor electrodes needed to suppress losses by avoiding dielectric materials. This tactic hinders scaling by increasing parasitic coupling among circuit components, degrading individual qubit addressability, and limiting the spatial density of qubits. Here, we take advantage of the unique properties of the van der Waals (vdW) materials to reduce…
We propose to use quantum coherence as ultimate proof of quantum nature in the radiation that appears by means of the Dynamical Casimir Effect in experiments with superconducting microwave waveguides. We show that, unlike previously considered measurements of quantum correlations such as entanglement and discord, quantum coherence does not require a threshold value of the external pump amplitude and is highly robust to thermal noise.
The critical step for future quantum industry demands realization of efficient information exchange between different-platform hybrid systems, including photonic and magnonic systems, that can harvest advantages of distinct platforms. The major restraining factor for the progress in certain hybrid systems is the fundamentally weak coupling parameter between the elemental particles. This restriction impedes the entire field of hybrid magnonics by making realization of scalable on-chip hybrid magnonic systems unattainable. In this work, we propose a general flexible approach for realization of o…
We show experimentally that a dc-biased Josephson junction in series with two microwave resonators emits entangled beams of microwaves leaking out of the resonators. In the absence of a stationary phase reference for characterizing the entanglement of the outgoing beams, we measure second-order coherence functions for proving entanglement up to an emission rate of 2.5 billion photon pairs per second. The experimental results are found in quantitative agreement with theory, proving that the low frequency noise of the dc bias is the main limitation for the coherence time of the entangled beams. …
The intrinsic dissipation of systems into a shared reservoir introduces coherence between two systems, enabling anti-Parity-Time (anti-PT) symmetry. In this paper, we propose an anti-PT symmetric converter, consisting of a microwave cavity coupled dissipatively to a ferromagnetic sphere, which supports significant improvements in the conversion efficiency when compared to coherently coupled setups. In particular, when only the ferrite sample is driven, the strong coherence induced by the vacuum of the mediating channel leads to much stronger enhancements in the intended conversion. The enhance…
We present a platform based upon silicon nitride nanomembranes for integrating superconducting microwave circuits with planar acoustic and optical devices such as phononic and photonic crystals. Utilizing tensile stress and lithographic patterning of a silicon nitride nanomembrane we are able to reliably realize planar capacitors with vacuum gap sizes down to $s \approx 80$nm. In combination with spiral inductor coils of micron pitch, this yields microwave ($\approx 8$GHz) resonant circuits of high impedance ($Z_{0} \approx 3.4$k$Ω$) suitable for efficient electromechanical coupling to nanosca…
As experimental quantum information processing (QIP) rapidly advances, an emerging challenge is to design a scalable architecture that combines various quantum elements into a complex device without compromising their performance. In particular, superconducting quantum circuits have successfully demonstrated many of the requirements for quantum computing, including coherence levels that approach the thresholds for scaling. However, it remains challenging to couple a large number of circuit components through controllable channels while suppressing any other interactions. We propose a hardware …
We introduce and experimentally characterize a superconducting single-sideband modulator compatible with cryogenic microwave circuits, and propose its use for frequency domain multiplexing of superconducting qubit readout. The monolithic single-quadrature modulators that comprise the device are formed with purely reactive elements (capacitors and Josephson junction inductors) and require no microwave-frequency control tones. Microwave signals in the 4 to 8 GHz band, with power up to -85 dBm, are converted up or down in frequency by as much as 120 MHz. Spurious harmonics in the device can be su…
Detecting an itinerant microwave photon with high efficiency is an outstanding problem in microwave photonics and its applications. We present a scheme to detect an itinerant microwave photon in a transmission line via the nonlinearity provided by a transmon in a driven microwave resonator. With a single transmon we achieve 84% distinguishability between zero and one microwave photons and 90% distinguishability with two cascaded transmons by performing continuous measurements on the output field of the resonator. We also show how the measurement diminishes coherence in the photon number basis …

The conversion between microwave photons and optical photons with quantum coherence is important for quantum communication and computation. In this paper, we report a proposal using an ensemble of atoms coupled to microwave and optical resonators. Input photons to one resonator are converted into output photons in the other resonator without active operation. Usually the conversion is only optimized at certain frequency. In our proposal, we find that the efficiency is almost a constant and can be close to 100% in a large interval of frequency, i.e. a high-bandwidth conversion can be realized w…
We propose a superconducting circuit-atom hybrid, where the Rabi oscillation of single excess Cooper pair in the island is stabilized via the common atomic-clock technique. The noise in the superconducting circuit is mapped onto the voltage source which biases the Cooper-pair box via an inductor and a gate capacitor. The fast fluctuations of the gate charge are significantly suppressed by an inductor-capacitor resonator, leading to a long-relaxation-time Rabi oscillation. More importantly, the residual low-frequency fluctuations are further reduced by using the general feedback-control method,…
