Let $(M, g)$ be a compact Riemann surface with area $1$. We investigate the Toda system \begin{align} \begin{cases} -Δu_1 = 2ρ_1(h_1e^{u_1}-1) - ρ_2(h_2e^{u_2}-1),\\ -Δu_2 = 2ρ_2(h_2e^{u_2}-1) - ρ_1(h_1e^{u_1}-1), \end{cases} \end{align} on $(M, g)$ where $ρ_1, ρ_2 \in (0,4π]$, and $h_1$ and $h_2$ are two smooth functions on $M$.When some $ρ_i$ equals $4π$, the Toda system becomes critical with respect to the Moser-Trudinger inequality for it, making the existence problem significantly more challenging. In their seminal article (Comm. Pure Appl. Math., 59 (2006), no. 4, 526--558), Jost, Lin, and Wang established sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions the Toda system when $ρ_1=4π$, $ρ_2 \in (0,4π)$ or $ρ_1=ρ_2=4π$, assuming that $h_1$ and $h_2$ are both positive. In our previous paper we extended these results to allow $h_1$ and $h_2$ to change signs in the case $ρ_1=4π$, $ρ_2 \in (0,4π)$. In this paper we further extend the study to prove that Jost-Lin-Wang's sufficient conditions remain valid even when $h_1$ and $h_2$ can change signs and $ρ_1=ρ_2=4π$. Our proof relies on an improved version of the Moser-Trudinger inequality for the Toda system, along with edicated analyses similar to Brezis-Merle type and the use of Pohozaev identities.
In this paper, we consider the problem of prescribing scalar curvature on n-sphere. Assume that the candidate curvature function $f$, which is allowed to change sign, satisfies some kind of Morse index or symmetry condition. By studying the well-known scalar curvature flow, we are able to prove that the flow converges to a metric with the prescribed function $f$ as its scalar curvature.
Let $(M,g)$ be a two dimensional compact Riemannian manifold of genus $g(M)>1$. Let $f$ be a smooth function on $M$ such that $$f \ge 0, \quad f\not\equiv 0, \quad \min_M f = 0. $$ Let $p_1,\ldots,p_n$ be any set of points at which $f(p_i)=0$ and $D^2f(p_i)$ is non-singular. We prove that for all sufficiently small $λ>0$ there exists a family of "bubbling" conformal metrics $g_λ=e^{u_λ}g$ such that their Gauss curvature is given by the sign-changing function $K_{g_λ}=-f+λ^2$. Moreover, the family $u_λ$ satisfies $$u_λ(p_j) = -4\logλ-2\log \left (\frac 1{\sqrt{2}} \log \frac 1λ\right ) +O(1)$$ …
In this paper, we are concerned with the global structure of radial solutions, with prescribed nodal properties, to the boundary value problem $$\text{div}\big(ϕ_{N}(\nabla v)\big)+λf(|x|, v)=0 ~~~\text{in} ~~B(R), ~~~ v=0 ~~~\text{on} ~~\partial B(R), $$ where $ϕ_{N}(y)=\frac{y}{\sqrt{1-|y|^{2}}},\; y\in \mathbb{R}^{N}$, $λ$ is a positive parameter, $B(R)=\{x\in \mathbb{R}^{N} :|x|<R\}$, and $|\cdot|$ denote the Euclidean norm in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$. All results, depending on the behavior of nonlinear term $f$ near 0, are obtained by using global bifurcation techniques.
In this paper we give conditions on $f$ so that problem $$ Δu +f(u)=0,\quad x\in \mathbb{R}^N, N\ge 2, $$ has at least two radial bound state solutions with any prescribed number of zeros, and such that $u(0)$ belongs to a specific subinterval of $(0,\infty)$. This property will allow us to give conditions on $f$ so that this problem has at least any given number of radial solutions having a prescribed number of zeros.
We are interested in providing new results on a prescribed mean curvature equation in Lorentz-Minkowski space set in the whole R^N, with N >2. We study both existence and multiplicity of radial ground state solutions for p>1, emphasizing the fundamental difference between the subcritical and the supercritical case. We also study speed decay at infinity of ground states, and give some decay estimates. Finally we provide a multiplicity result on the existence of sign-changing bound state solutions for any p>1.
We prove that two Aleksandrov solutions of a generated prescribed Jacobian equation have the same gradients at points where they are both differentiable. For the optimal transportation case where two solutions can be translated to agree at a point without changing the $g$-subdifferential at that point, we recover the uniqueness up to a constant of solutions. For the general case, our result is a new proof with less regularity assumptions of a key theorem recently used to prove the uniqueness of solutions.
We consider two natural problems arising in geometry which are equivalent to the local solvability of specific equations of Monge-Ampere type. These two problems are: the local isometric embedding problem for two-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, and the problem of locally prescribed Gaussian curvature for surfaces in R^3. We prove a general local existence result for a large class of Monge-Ampere equations in the plane, and obtain as corollaries the existence of regular solutions to both problems, in the case that the Gaussian curvature vanishes to arbitrary finite order on a single smooth cu…
We study the existence of at least one conformal metric of prescribed Gaussian curvature on a closed surface $Σ$ admitting conical singularities of orders $α_i$'s at points $p_i$'s. In particular, we are concerned with the case where the prescribed Gaussian curvature is sign-changing. Such a geometrical problem reduces to solving a singular Liouville equation. By employing a min-max scheme jointly with a finite dimensional reduction method, we deduce new perturbative results providing existence when the quantity $χ(Σ)+\sum_i α_i$ approaches a positive even integer, where $χ(Σ)$ is the Euler ch…
We consider radial solutions of an elliptic equation involving the p-Laplace operator and prove by a shooting method the existence of compactly supported solutions with any prescribed number of nodes. The method is based on a change of variables in the phase plane corresponding to an asymptotic Hamiltonian system and provides qualitative properties of the solutions.
Analog to the classical result of Kazdan-Warner for the existence of solutions to the prescribed Gaussian curvature equation on compact 2-manifolds without boundary, it is widely known that if $(M,g_0)$ is a closed 4-manifold with zero $Q$-curvature and if $f$ is any non-constant, smooth, sign-changing function with $\int_M f dμ_{{\it g}_0} <0$, then there exists at least one solution $u$ to the prescribed $Q$-curvature equation \[ \mathbf{P}_{g_0} u = f e^{4u}, \] where $\mathbf{P}_{g_0}$ is the Paneitz operator which is positive with kernel consisting of constant functions. In this paper, we…
We study the existence of sign-changing solutions for a non-local version of the sinh-Poisson equation on a bounded one-dimensional interval $I$, under Dirichlet conditions in the exterior of $I$. This model is strictly related to the mathematical description of galvanic corrosion phenomena for simple electrochemical systems. By means of the finite-dimensional Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction method, we construct bubbling families of solutions developing an arbitrarily prescribed number sign-alternating peaks. With a careful analysis of the limit profile of the solutions, we also show that the numbe…
In this paper we prove the existence of continua of nonradial solutions for the Lane-Emden equation. In a first result we show that there are infinitely many global continua detaching from the curve of radial solutions with any prescribed number of nodal zones. Next, using the fixed point index in cone, we produce nonradial solutions with a new type of symmetry. This result also applies to solutions with fixed signed, showing that the set of solutions to the Lane Emden problem has a very rich and complex structure.
We show that the components of finite energy solutions to general nonlinear Schrödinger systems have exponential decay at infinity. Our results apply to positive or sign-changing components, and to cooperative, competitive, or mixed-interaction systems. As an application, we use the exponential decay to derive an upper bound for the least possible energy of a solution with a prescribed number of positive and nonradial sign-changing components.
In this paper we establish the existence of bound state solutions of any given order to $$ Δ_m u +f(u)=0, x\in R^N, N\ge m>1, (P) $$ where $Δ_m u=\nabla\cdot(|\nabla u|^{m-2}\nabla u)$ using the same techniques as in [GST] to establish the existence of a ground state solution to (P). Since our solutions change sign, we assume f is continuous in R. The main point here is that by asking a stronger subcritical assumption (see (f_3)(ii) below) than the one considered in [GST], we are able to adapt their techniques to obtain the existence of bound states with a prescribed number of zeros.
We investigate the existence of nodal (sign-changing) solutions to the Dirichlet problem for two-parametric family of partially homogeneous $(p,q)$-Laplace equations $-Δ_p u -Δ_q u=α|u|^{p-2}u+β|u|^{q-2}u$ where $p \neq q$. By virtue of the Nehari manifolds, linking theorem, and descending flow, we explicitly characterize subsets of $(α,β)$-plane which correspond to the existence of nodal solutions. In each subset the obtained solutions have prescribed signs of energy and, in some cases, exactly two nodal domains. The nonexistence of nodal solutions is also studied. Additionally, we explore se…
We consider radial solutions of a general elliptic equation involving a weighted $p$-Laplace operator with a subcritical nonlinearity. By a shooting method we prove the existence of solutions with any prescribed number of nodes. The method is based on a change of variables in the phase plane, a very general computation of an angular velocity and new estimates for the decay of an energy associated with an asymptotic Hamiltonian problem. Estimating the rate of decay for the energy requires a sub-criticality condition. The method covers the case of solutions which are not compactly supported or w…
Let $Ω$ be an open, possibly unbounded, set in Euclidean space $\R^m$ with boundary $\partialΩ,$ let $A$ be a measurable subset of $Ω$ with measure $|A|$, and let $γ\in (0,1)$. We investigate whether the solution $v_{\Om,A,γ}$ of $-Δv=γ{\bf 1}_{Ω\setminus A}-(1-γ){\bf 1}_{A}$ with $v=0$ on $\partial Ω$ changes sign. Bounds are obtained for $|A|$ in terms of geometric characteristics of $\Om$ (bottom of the spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplacian, torsion, measure, or $R$-smoothness of the boundary) such that ${\rm essinf} v_{\Om,A,γ}\ge 0$. We show that ${\rm essinf} v_{\Om,A,γ}<0$ for any measura…
We study the existence and asymptotic behavior of solutions having positive and sign-changing components to the singularly perturbed system of elliptic equations \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -\varepsilon^2Δu_i+u_i=μ_i|u_i|^{p-2}u_i + \sum\limits_{\substack{j=1 \\ j \not=i}}^\ellλ_{ij}β_{ij}|u_j|^{α_{ij}}|u_i|^{β_{ij} -2}u_i,\\ u_i \in H^1_0(Ω), \quad u_i\neq 0, \qquad i=1,\ldots,\ell, \end{cases} \end{equation*} in a bounded domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$, with $N\geq 4$, $\varepsilon>0$, $μ_i>0$, $λ_{ij}=λ_{ji}<0$, $α_{ij}, β_{ij}>1$, $α_{ij}=β_{ji}$, $α_{ij} + β_{ij} = p\in (2,2^*)$, and $2…
We study the saddle solutions for the fractional Choquard equation \begin{align*} (-Δ)^{s}u+ u=(K_α\ast|u|^{p})|u|^{p-2}u, \quad x\in \mathbb{R}^N \end{align*} where $s\in(0,1)$, $N\geq 3$ and $K_α$ is the Riesz potential with order $α\in (0,N)$. For every Coxeter group $G$ with rank $1\leq k\leq N$ and $p\in[2,\frac{N+α}{N-2s})$, we construct a $G$-saddle solution with prescribed symmetric nodal configurations. This is a counterpart for the fractional Choquard equation of saddle solutions to the Choquard equation and further completes the existence of non-radial sign-changing solutions for th…
