Cosmological data collected on a sphere, such as CMB anisotropies, are typically represented by the spherical harmonic coefficients, denoted as $a_{\ell m}$. The angular power spectrum, or $C_\ell$, serves as the fundamental estimator of the variance in this data. Alternatively, spherical data and their variance can also be characterized using Multipole Vectors (MVs) and the Fréchet variance. The vectors that minimize this variance, known as Fréchet Vectors (FVs), define the center of mass of points on a compact space, and are excellent indicators of statistical correlations between different multipoles. We demonstrate this using both simulations and real data. Through simulations, we show that FVs enable a blind detection and reconstruction of the location associated with a mock Cold Spot anomaly introduced in an otherwise isotropic sky. Applying these tools to the 2018 Planck maps, we implement several improvements on previous null tests of Gaussianity and statistical isotropy, down to arc-minute scales. Planck's MVs appear consistent with these hypotheses at scales $2 \leq\ell \leq 1500$ when the common mask is applied, whereas the same test using the FVs rejects them with significances between 5.3 and 8.2$σ$. The inclusion of anisotropic noise simulations render the FVs marginally consistent ($\geq 2σ$) with the null hypotheses at the same scales, but still rejects them at $3.5-3.7σ$ when we consider scales above $\ell=1500$, where the signal-to-noise is small. Limitations of the noise and/or foregrounds modeling may account for these deviations from the null hypothesis.
Extracting CMB B-mode polarization from complicated foregrounds is a challenging task in searching for inflationary gravitational waves. We propose the ABS method as a blind and analytical solution to this problem. It applies to the measured cross bandpower between different frequency bands and obtains the CMB B-mode bandpower analytically. It does not rely on assumptions of foregrounds and does not require multiple parameter fitting. Testing against a variety of foregrounds, survey frequency configurations and instrument noise, we verify its applicability and numerical stability. The ABS meth…
We present a new blind formulation of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) inference problem. The approach relies on a phenomenological model of the multi-frequency microwave sky without the need for physical models of the individual components. For all-sky and high resolution data, it unifies parts of the analysis that have previously been treated separately, such as component separation and power spectrum inference. We describe an efficient sampling scheme that fully explores the component separation uncertainties on the inferred CMB products such as maps and/or power spectra. External info…
Multi-frequency observations are needed to separate the CMB from foregrounds and accurately extract cosmological information from the data. The Analytical Blind Separation (ABS) method is dedicated to extracting the CMB power spectrum from multi-frequency observations in the presence of contamination from astrophysical foreground emission and instrumental noise. In this study, we apply the ABS method to simulated sky maps as could be observed with a future space-borne survey, in order to test the method's capability for determining the CMB polarization $E$- and $B$-mode power spectra. We prese…

Cosmological parameter measurements from CMB experiments such as Planck, ACTpol, SPTpol and other high resolution follow-ons fundamentally rely on the accuracy of the assumed recombination model, or one with well prescribed uncertainties. Deviations from the standard recombination history might suggest new particle physics or modified atomic physics. Here we treat possible perturbative fluctuations in the free electron fraction, $\Xe(z)$, by a semi-blind expansion in densely-packed modes in redshift. From these we construct parameter eigenmodes, which we rank order so that the lowest modes pro…
We study the problem of EB-leakage that is associated with incomplete polarized CMB sky. In the blind case that assumes no additional information about the statistical properties and amplitudes of the signal from the missing sky region, we prove that the recycling method (Liu et al.~2018) gives the unique best estimate of the EB-leakage. Compared to the previous method, this method reduces the uncertainties in the BB power spectrum due to EB-leakage by more than one order of magnitude in the most interesting domain of multipoles, where $\ell$ is between $80$ and $200$. This work also provides …
Galactic foregrounds are the main obstacle to observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) $B$-mode polarization. In addition to obscuring the inflationary $B$-mode signal by several orders of magnitude, Galactic foregrounds have non-trivial spectral signatures that are partially unknown and distorted by averaging effects along the line-of-sight, within the pixel/beam window, and by various analysis choices (e.g., spherical harmonic transforms and filters). Statistical moment expansion methods provide a powerful tool for modeling the effective Galactic foreground emission resulting fr…
(Abridged) Despite the great success of precision cosmology, cosmologists cannot fully explain the initial conditions of the Universe. Inflation, an exponential expansion in the first 10^-36s, is a promising potential explanation. A generic prediction of inflation is odd-parity (B-mode) polarization in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The Q/U Imaging ExperimenT (QUIET) aimed to limit or detect this polarization. We built a coherent pseudo-correlation microwave polarimeter. An array of mass-produced modules populated the focal plane of a 1.4m telescope. Each module had a sensitivity to po…
We present a demonstration of the in-flight polarization angle calibration for the JAXA/ISAS second strategic large class mission, LiteBIRD, and estimate its impact on the measurement of the tensor-to-scalar ratio parameter, r, using simulated data. We generate a set of simulated sky maps with CMB and polarized foreground emission, and inject instrumental noise and polarization angle offsets to the 22 (partially overlapping) LiteBIRD frequency channels. Our in-flight angle calibration relies on nulling the EB cross correlation of the polarized signal in each channel. This calibration step has …
We investigate the extent to which foreground cleaned CMB maps can be used to estimate the cosmological parameters at small scales. We use the SMICA method, a blind separation technique which works directly at the spectral level. In this work we focus on the small scales of the CMB angular power spectrum, which are chiefly affected by noise and extragalactic foregrounds, such as point sources. We adapt SMICA to use only cross-spectra between data maps, thus avoiding the noise bias. In this study, performed both on simulations and on Planck 2015 data, we fit for extragalactic point sources by m…
We search for a direction in the sky that exhibits parity symmetry under reflections through a plane. We use the natural estimator, which compares the power in even and odd $\ell+m$ multipoles, and apply minimal blind masking of outliers to the ILC map in order to avoid large errors in the reconstruction of multipoles. The multipoles of the cut sky are calculated both naively and by using the covariance inversion method and we estimate the significance of our results using $Λ$CDM simulations. Focusing on low multipoles, $2\leq \ell \leq \ell_{\max}$ with $\ell_{\max}=5,6$ or even 7, we find tw…
Given a set of images, whose pixel values can be considered as the components of a vector, it is interesting to estimate the modulus of such a vector in some localised areas corresponding to a compact signal. For instance, the detection/estimation of a polarized signal in compact sources immersed in a background is relevant in some fields like astrophysics. We develop two different techniques, one based on the Neyman-Pearson lemma, the Neyman-Pearson filter (NPF), and another based on prefiltering-before-fusion, the filtered fusion (FF), to deal with the problem of detection of the source and …

We assess the uncertainty with which a balloon-borne experiment, nominally called Tau Surveyor ($τS$), can measure the optical depth to reionization $σ(τ)$ with given realistic constraints of instrument noise and foreground emissions. Using a $τS$ fiducial design with six frequency bands between 150 and 380 GHz with white and uniform map noise of 7 $μ$K arcmin, achievable with a single mid-latitude flight, and including Planck's 30 and 44 GHz data we assess the error $σ(τ)$ obtained with three foreground models and as a function of sky fraction $f_{\rm sky}$ between 40% and 54%. We carry out t…

We describe the CO Luminosity Density at High-z (COLDz) survey, the first spectral line deep field targeting CO(1-0) emission from galaxies at $z=1.95-2.85$ and CO(2-1) at $z=4.91-6.70$. The main goal of COLDz is to constrain the cosmic density of molecular gas at the peak epoch of cosmic star formation. By targeting both a wide ($\sim$51 arcmin$^2$) and a deep area ($\sim$9 arcmin$^2$), the survey is designed to robustly constrain the bright end and the characteristic luminosity of the CO(1-0) luminosity function. An extensive analysis of the reliability of our line candidates, and new techni…

We present an interesting Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) detection in the first of the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager (AMI) 'blind', degree-square fields to have been observed down to our target sensitivity of 100μJy/beam. In follow-up deep pointed observations the SZ effect is detected with a maximum peak decrement greater than 8 \times the thermal noise. No corresponding emission is visible in the ROSAT all-sky X-ray survey and no cluster is evident in the Palomar all-sky optical survey. Compared with existing SZ images of distant clusters, the extent is large (\approx 10') and complex; our analysis …
