Over the past decades, a fascinating computational phase transition has been identified in sampling from Gibbs distributions. Though, the computational complexity at the critical point remains poorly understood, as previous algorithmic and hardness results all required a constant slack from this threshold.
In this paper, we resolve this open question at the critical phase transition threshold, thus completing the picture of the computational phase transition. We show that for the hardcore model on graphs with maximum degree $Δ\ge 3$ at the uniqueness threshold $λ= λ_c(Δ)$, the mixing time of Glauber dynamics is upper bounded by a polynomial in $n$, but is not nearly linear in the worst case.
For the Ising model (either antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic), we establish similar results. For the Ising model on graphs with maximum degree $Δ\ge 3$ at the critical temperature $β$ where $|β| = β_c(Δ)$, with the tree-uniqueness threshold $β_c(Δ)$, we show that the mixing time of Glauber dynamics is upper bounded by $\tilde{O}\left(n^{3 + O(1/Δ)}\right)$ and lower bounded by $Ω\left(n^{3/2}\right)$ in the worst case. For the Ising model specified by a critical interaction matrix $J$ with $\left \lVert J \right \rVert_2=1$, we obtain an upper bound $\tilde{O}(n^{3/2})$ for the mixing time, matching the lower bound $Ω\left(n^{3/2}\right)$ on the complete graph up to a logarithmic factor.
Our mixing time upper bounds are derived from a new interpretation and analysis of the localization scheme method introduced by Chen and Eldan (2022), applied to the field dynamics for the hardcore model and the proximal sampler for the Ising model. As key steps in both our upper and lower bounds, we establish sub-linear upper and lower bounds for spectral independence at the critical point for worst-case instances.
We prove an optimal $O(n \log n)$ mixing time of the Glauber dynamics for the Ising models with edge activity $β\in \left(\frac{Δ-2}Δ, \fracΔ{Δ-2}\right)$. This mixing time bound holds even if the maximum degree $Δ$ is unbounded. We refine the boosting technique developed in [CFYZ21], and prove a new boosting theorem by utilizing the entropic independence defined in [AJK+21]. The theorem relates the modified log-Sobolev (MLS) constant of the Glauber dynamics for a near-critical Ising model to that for an Ising model in a sub-critical regime.

We give fully polynomial-time approximation schemes (FPTAS) for the partition function of ferromagnetic 2-spin systems in certain parameter regimes. The threshold we obtain is almost tight up to an integrality gap. Our technique is based on the correlation decay framework. The main technical contribution is a new potential function, with which we establish a new kind of spatial mixing.
We show that the mixing time of Glauber (single edge update) dynamics for the random cluster model at $q=2$ is bounded by a polynomial in the size of the underlying graph. As a consequence, the Swendsen-Wang algorithm for the ferromagnetic Ising model at any temperature has the same polynomial mixing time bound.
We prove an optimal $Ω(n^{-1})$ lower bound for modified log-Sobolev (MLS) constant of the Glauber dynamics for anti-ferromagnetic two-spin systems with $n$ vertices in the tree uniqueness regime. Specifically, this optimal MLS bound holds for the following classes of two-spin systems in the tree uniqueness regime: $\bullet$ all strictly anti-ferromagnetic two-spin systems (where both edge parameters $β,γ<1$), which cover the hardcore models and the anti-ferromagnetic Ising models; $\bullet$ general anti-ferromagnetic two-spin systems on regular graphs. Consequently, an optimal $O(n\log n)$ mi…
For general antiferromagnetic 2-spin systems, including the hardcore model and the antiferromagnetic Ising model, there is an $\mathsf{FPTAS}$ for the partition function on graphs of maximum degree $Δ$ when the infinite regular tree lies in the uniqueness region by Li et al. (2013). Moreover, in the tree non-uniqueness region, Sly (2010) showed that there is no $\mathsf{FPRAS}$ to estimate the partition function unless $\mathsf{NP}=\mathsf{RP}$. The algorithmic results follow from the correlation decay approach due to Weitz (2006) or the polynomial interpolation approach developed by Barvinok …
We give a systematic development of the application of matrix norms to rapid mixing in spin systems. We show that rapid mixing of both random update Glauber dynamics and systematic scan Glauber dynamics occurs if any matrix norm of the associated dependency matrix is less than 1. We give improved analysis for the case in which the diagonal of the dependency matrix is $\mathbf{0}$ (as in heat bath dynamics). We apply the matrix norm methods to random update and systematic scan Glauber dynamics for coloring various classes of graphs. We give a general method for estimating a norm of a symmetric …
We extend the notion of spectral independence (introduced by Anari, Liu, and Oveis Gharan [ALO20]) from the Boolean domain to general discrete domains. This property characterises distributions with limited correlations, and implies that the corresponding Glauber dynamics is rapidly mixing. As a concrete application, we show that Glauber dynamics for sampling proper $q$-colourings mixes in polynomial-time for the family of triangle-free graphs with maximum degree $Δ$ provided $q\ge (α^*+δ)Δ$ where $α^*\approx 1.763$ is the unique solution to $α^*=\exp(1/α^*)$ and $δ>0$ is any constant. This is…

We prove an optimal mixing time bound on the single-site update Markov chain known as the Glauber dynamics or Gibbs sampling in a variety of settings. Our work presents an improved version of the spectral independence approach of Anari et al. (2020) and shows $O(n\log{n})$ mixing time on any $n$-vertex graph of bounded degree when the maximum eigenvalue of an associated influence matrix is bounded. As an application of our results, for the hard-core model on independent sets weighted by a fugacity $λ$, we establish $O(n\log{n})$ mixing time for the Glauber dynamics on any $n$-vertex graph of c…
The Swendsen-Wang algorithm is a sophisticated, widely-used Markov chain for sampling from the Gibbs distribution for the ferromagnetic Ising and Potts models. This chain has proved difficult to analyze, due in part to the global nature of its updates. We present optimal bounds on the convergence rate of the Swendsen-Wang algorithm for the complete $d$-ary tree. Our bounds extend to the non-uniqueness region and apply to all boundary conditions. We show that the spatial mixing conditions known as Variance Mixing and Entropy Mixing, introduced in the study of local Markov chains by Martinelli e…
We survey existing techniques to bound the mixing time of Markov chains. The mixing time is related to a geometric parameter called conductance which is a measure of edge-expansion. Bounds on conductance are typically obtained by a technique called "canonical paths" where the idea is to find a set of paths, one between every source-destination pair, such that no edge is heavily congested. However, the canonical paths approach cannot always show rapid mixing of a rapidly mixing chain. This drawback disappears if we allow the flow between a pair of states to be spread along multiple paths. We pr…
A well-known conjecture in computer science and statistical physics is that Glauber dynamics on the set of $k$-colorings of a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with maximum degree $Δ$ is rapidly mixing for $k \geq Δ+2$. In FOCS 1999, Vigoda showed rapid mixing of flip dynamics with certain flip parameters on the set of proper $k$-colorings for $k > \frac{11}{6}Δ$, implying rapid mixing for Glauber dynamics. In this paper, we obtain the first improvement beyond the $\frac{11}{6}Δ$ barrier for general graphs by showing rapid mixing for $k > (\frac{11}{6} - η)Δ$ for some positive constant $η$. The key to…
Ge and Stefankovic have recently introduced a novel two-variable graph polynomial. When specialised to a bipartite graphs G and evaluated at the point (1/2,1) this polynomial gives the number of independent sets in the graph. Inspired by this polynomial, they also introduced a Markov chain which, if rapidly mixing, would provide an efficient sampling procedure for independent sets in G. This sampling procedure in turn would imply the existence of efficient approximation algorithms for a number of significant counting problems whose complexity is so far unresolved. The proposed Markov chain is …
The Swendsen-Wang dynamics is a popular algorithm for sampling from the Gibbs distribution for the ferromagnetic Ising model on a graph $G=(V,E)$. The dynamics is a "global" Markov chain which is conjectured to converge to equilibrium in $O(|V|^{1/4})$ steps for any graph $G$ at any (inverse) temperature $β$. It was recently proved by Guo and Jerrum (2017) that the Swendsen-Wang dynamics has polynomial mixing time on any graph at all temperatures, yet there are few results providing $o(|V|)$ upper bounds on its convergence time. We prove fast convergence of the Swendsen-Wang dynamics on genera…
Motivated by the `subgraphs world' view of the ferromagnetic Ising model, we develop a general approach to studying mixing times of Glauber dynamics based on subset expansion expressions for a class of graph polynomials. With a canonical paths argument, we demonstrate that the chains defined within this framework mix rapidly upon graphs of bounded tree-width. This extends known results on rapid mixing for the Tutte polynomial, the adjacency-rank ($R_2$-)polynomial and the interlace polynomial.
We consider proper 5-colourings of the kagome lattice. Proper q-colourings correspond to configurations in the zero-temperature q-state anti-ferromagnetic Potts model. Salas and Sokal have given a computer assisted proof of strong spatial mixing on the kagome lattice for q>=6 under any temperature, including zero temperature. It is believed that there is strong spatial mixing for q>=4. Here we give a computer assisted proof of strong spatial mixing for q=5 and zero temperature. It is commonly known that strong spatial mixing implies that there is a unique infinite-volume Gibbs measure and that…
We prove an optimal $Ω(n^{-1})$ lower bound on the spectral gap of Glauber dynamics for anti-ferromagnetic two-spin systems with $n$ vertices in the tree uniqueness regime. This spectral gap holds for all, including unbounded, maximum degree $Δ$. Consequently, we have the following mixing time bounds for the models satisfying the uniqueness condition with a slack $δ\in(0,1)$: $\bullet$ $C(δ) n^2\log n$ mixing time for the hardcore model with fugacity $λ\le (1-δ)λ_c(Δ)= (1-δ)\frac{(Δ- 1)^{Δ- 1}}{(Δ- 2)^Δ}$; $\bullet$ $C(δ) n^2$ mixing time for the Ising model with edge activity $β\in\left[\frac…
We introduce a Markov chain for sampling from the uniform distribution on a Riemannian manifold $\mathcal{M}$, which we call the $\textit{geodesic walk}$. We prove that the mixing time of this walk on any manifold with positive sectional curvature $C_{x}(u,v)$ bounded both above and below by $0 < \mathfrak{m}_{2} \leq C_{x}(u,v) \leq \mathfrak{M}_2 < \infty$ is $\mathcal{O}^*\left(\frac{\mathfrak{M}_2}{\mathfrak{m}_2}\right)$. In particular, this bound on the mixing time does not depend explicitly on the dimension of the manifold. In the special case that $\mathcal{M}$ is the boundary of a con…
The spectral independence approach of Anari et al. (2020) utilized recent results on high-dimensional expanders of Alev and Lau (2020) and established rapid mixing of the Glauber dynamics for the hard-core model defined on weighted independent sets. We develop the spectral independence approach for colorings, and obtain new algorithmic results for the corresponding counting/sampling problems. Let $α^*\approx 1.763$ denote the solution to $\exp(1/x)=x$ and let $α>α^*$. We prove that, for any triangle-free graph $G=(V,E)$ with maximum degree $Δ$, for all $q\geqαΔ+1$, the mixing time of the Glaub…
Path integral quantum Monte Carlo (PIMC) is a method for estimating thermal equilibrium properties of stoquastic quantum spin systems by sampling from a classical Gibbs distribution using Markov chain Monte Carlo. The PIMC method has been widely used to study the physics of materials and for simulated quantum annealing, but these successful applications are rarely accompanied by formal proofs that the Markov chains underlying PIMC rapidly converge to the desired equilibrium distribution. In this work we analyze the mixing time of PIMC for 1D stoquastic Hamiltonians, including disordered transv…
We prove rapid mixing for certain Markov chains on the set $S_n$ of permutations on $1,2,\dots,n$ in which adjacent transpositions are made with probabilities that depend on the items being transposed. Typically, when in state $σ$, a position $i<n$ is chosen uniformly at random, and $σ(i)$ and $σ(i{+}1)$ are swapped with probability depending on $σ(i)$ and $σ(i{+}1)$. The stationary distributions of such chains appear in various fields of theoretical computer science, and rapid mixing established in the uniform case. Recently, there has been progress in cases with biased stationary distributio…
We introduce a new perfect sampling technique that can be applied to general Gibbs distributions and runs in linear time if the correlation decays faster than the neighborhood growth. In particular, in graphs with sub-exponential neighborhood growth like $\mathbb{Z}^d$, our algorithm achieves linear running time as long as Gibbs sampling is rapidly mixing. As concrete applications, we obtain the currently best perfect samplers for colorings and for monomer-dimer models in such graphs.
