Inspired by the recent success of machine-learned interatomic potentials for crystal structure prediction of the inorganic crystals, we present a methodology that exploits Moment Tensor Potentials and active learning (based on maxvol algorithm) to accelerate structure prediction of molecular crystals. Benzene and glycine are used as test systems. Interestingly, among obtained low energy structures of benzene we have found a peculiar polymeric benzene structure.
We report a self-guided and "stimulated" single-crystal growth acceleration effect in static super-saturated aqueous solutions, producing inorganic (KH$_2$PO$_4$) and organic (tetraphenyl-phosphonium-family) nonlinear optical single-crystals with novel morphologies. The extraordinarily fast unidirectional growth in the presence of complete lateral growth suppression defies all current impurity, defect and dislocation based crystal growth inhibition mechanisms. We propose a self-channeling-stimulated accelerated growth theory that can satisfactorily explain all experimental results. Using molec…
In this letter we propose a new methodology for crystal structure prediction, which is based on the evolutionary algorithm USPEX and the machine-learning interatomic potentials actively learning on-the-fly. Our methodology allows for an automated construction of an interatomic interaction model from scratch replacing the expensive DFT with a speedup of several orders of magnitude. Predicted low-energy structures are then tested on DFT, ensuring that our machine-learning model does not introduce any prediction error. We tested our methodology on a problem of prediction of carbon allotropes, den…
Based on structure prediction method, the machine learning method is used instead of the density function theory (DFT) method to predict the material properties, thereby accelerating the material search process. In this paper, we established a data set of carbon materials by high-throughput calculation with available carbon structures obtained from the Samara Carbon Allotrope Database. We then trained an ML model that specifically predicts the elastic modulus (bulk modulus, shear modulus, and the Young's modulus) and confirmed that the accuracy is better than that of AFLOW-ML in predicting the…
Machine learning (ML) models utilizing structure-based features provide an efficient means for accurate property predictions across diverse chemical spaces. However, obtaining equilibrium crystal structures typically requires expensive density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which limits ML-based exploration to either known crystals or a small number of hypothetical crystals. Here, we demonstrate that the application of Bayesian optimization with symmetry constraints using a graph deep learning energy model can be used to perform "DFT-free" relaxations of crystal structures. Using this a…

Structures and properties of many inorganic compounds have been collected historically. However, it only covers a very small portion of possible inorganic crystals, which implies the presence of numerous currently unknown compounds. A powerful machine-learning strategy is mandatory to discover new inorganic compounds from all chemical combinations. Herein we propose a descriptor-based recommender-system approach to estimate the relevance of chemical compositions where stable crystals can be formed [i.e., chemically relevant compositions (CRCs)]. As well as data-driven compositional similarity …
Solutions to the differential equations of linear elasticity in the continuum limit in arbitrary crystal symmetry are known only for steady-state dislocations of arbitrary character, i.e. line defects moving at constant velocity. Troubled by singularities at certain `critical' velocities (typically close to certain sound speeds), these dislocation fields are thought to be too idealized, and divergences are usually attributed to neglecting the finite size of the core and to the restriction to constant velocity. In the isotropic limit, accelerating pure screw and edge dislocations were studied s…
The use of machine learning methods for accelerating the design of crystalline materials usually requires manually constructed feature vectors or complex transformation of atom coordinates to input the crystal structure, which either constrains the model to certain crystal types or makes it difficult to provide chemical insights. Here, we develop a crystal graph convolutional neural networks framework to directly learn material properties from the connection of atoms in the crystal, providing a universal and interpretable representation of crystalline materials. Our method provides a highly ac…

Recognition of structure prototypes from tremendous known inorganic crystal structures has been an important subject beneficial for material science research and new materials design. The existing databases of inorganic crystal structure prototypes were mostly constructed by classifying materials in terms of the crystallographic space group information. Herein, we employed a distinct strategy to construct the inorganic crystal structure prototype database, relying on the classification of materials in terms of local atomic environments (LAE) accompanied by unsupervised machine learning method.…

Globally-stable and metastable crystal structure enumeration using polynomial machine learning potentials in elemental As, Bi, Ga, In, La, P, Sb, Sn, and Te
Predicting the stability of crystals is one of the central problems in materials science. Today, density functional theory (DFT) calculations are the computational tool of choice to obtain energies of crystals with quantitative accuracy. Despite algorithmic and computing advances, DFT calculations remain comparatively expensive and scale poorly with system size. Here we show that deep neural networks utilizing just two descriptors - the Pauling electronegativity and ionic radii - can predict the DFT formation energies of C3A2D3O12 garnets with extremely low mean absolute errors of 7-8 meV/atom…
The recently proposed crystal graph convolutional neural network (CGCNN) offers a highly versatile and accurate machine learning (ML) framework by learning material properties directly from graph-like representations of crystal structures ("crystal graphs"). Here, we develop an improved variant of the CGCNN model (iCGCNN) that outperforms the original by incorporating information of the Voronoi tessellated crystal structure, explicit 3-body correlations of neighboring constituent atoms, and an optimized chemical representation of interatomic bonds in the crystal graphs. We demonstrate the accu…

We develop a method combining machine learning (ML) and density functional theory (DFT) to predict low-energy polymorphs by introducing physics-guided descriptors based on structural distortion modes. We systematically generate crystal structures utilizing the distortion modes and compute their energies with single-point DFT calculations. We then train a ML model to identify low-energy configurations on the material's high-dimensional potential energy surface. Here, we use BiFeO3 as a case study and explore its phase space by tuning the amplitudes of linear combinations of a finite set of dist…
