The rapid advancements in autonomous vehicle software present both opportunities and challenges, especially in enhancing road safety. The primary objective of autonomous vehicles is to reduce accident rates through improved safety measures. However, the integration of new algorithms into the autonomous vehicle, such as Artificial Intelligence methods, raises concerns about the compliance with established safety regulations. This paper introduces a novel software architecture based on behavior trees, aligned with established standards and designed to supervise vehicle functional safety in real time. It specifically addresses the integration of algorithms into industrial road vehicles, adhering to the ISO 26262. The proposed supervision methodology involves the detection of hazards and compliance with functional and technical safety requirements when a hazard arises. This methodology, implemented in this study in a Renault Mégane (currently at SAE level 3 of automation), not only guarantees compliance with safety standards, but also paves the way for safer and more reliable autonomous driving technologies.
The complexity of automated driving poses challenges for providing safety assurance. Focusing on the architecting of an Autonomous Driving Intelligence (ADI), i.e. the computational intelligence, sensors and communication needed for high levels of automated driving, we investigate so called safety supervisors that complement the nominal functionality. We present a problem formulation and a functional architecture of a fault-tolerant ADI that encompasses a nominal and a safety supervisor channel. We then discuss the sources of hazardous events, the division of responsibilities among the channel…
Vehicle-in-Virtual-Environment (VVE) Method for Developing and Evaluating VRU Safety of Connected and Autonomous Driving with Focus on Bicyclist Safety
This work in progress considers reachability-based safety analysis in the domain of autonomous driving in multi-agent systems. We formulate the safety problem for a car following scenario as a differential game and study how different modelling strategies yield very different behaviors regardless of the validity of the strategies in other scenarios. Given the nature of real-life driving scenarios, we propose a modeling strategy in our formulation that accounts for subtle interactions between agents, and compare its Hamiltonian results to other baselines. Our formulation encourages reduction of…

Evaluating the safety of an autonomous vehicle (AV) depends on the behavior of surrounding agents which can be heavily influenced by factors such as environmental context and informally-defined driving etiquette. A key challenge is in determining a minimum set of assumptions on what constitutes reasonable foreseeable behaviors of other road users for the development of AV safety models and techniques. In this paper, we propose a data-driven AV safety design methodology that first learns ``reasonable'' behavioral assumptions from data, and then synthesizes an AV safety concept using these learn…

Providing safety guarantees for Autonomous Vehicle (AV) systems with machine-learning-based controllers remains a challenging issue. In this work, we propose Simplex-Drive, a framework that can achieve runtime safety assurance for machine-learning enabled controllers of AVs. The proposed Simplex-Drive consists of an unverified Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL)-based advanced controller (AC) that achieves desirable performance in complex scenarios, a Velocity-Obstacle (VO) based baseline safe controller (BC) with provably safety guarantees, and a verified mode management unit that monitors the …

As safety-critical autonomous vehicles (AVs) will soon become pervasive in our society, a number of safety concepts for trusted AV deployment have recently been proposed throughout industry and academia. Yet, achieving consensus on an appropriate safety concept is still an elusive task. In this paper, we advocate for the use of Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) reachability as a unifying mathematical framework for comparing existing safety concepts, and through elements of this framework propose ways to tailor safety concepts (and thus expand their applicability) to scenarios with implicit expectations on …

An open question in autonomous driving is how best to use simulation to validate the safety of autonomous vehicles. Existing techniques rely on simulated rollouts, which can be inefficient for finding rare failure events, while other techniques are designed to only discover a single failure. In this work, we present a new safety validation approach that attempts to estimate the distribution over failures of an autonomous policy using approximate dynamic programming. Knowledge of this distribution allows for the efficient discovery of many failure examples. To address the problem of scalability…
Autonomous vehicles face tremendous challenges while interacting with human drivers in different kinds of scenarios. Developing control methods with safety guarantees while performing interactions with uncertainty is an ongoing research goal. In this paper, we present a real-time safe control framework using bi-level optimization with Control Barrier Function (CBF) that enables an autonomous ego vehicle to interact with human-driven cars in ramp merging scenarios with a consistent safety guarantee. In order to explicitly address motion uncertainty, we propose a novel extension of control barri…
Understanding human driving behavior is crucial to develop autonomous vehicles' algorithms. However, most low level automation, such as the one in advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS), is based on objective safety measures, which are not always aligned with what the drivers perceive as safe and their correspondent driving behavior. Finding the bridge between the subjective perception and objective safety measures has been analyzed in this paper focusing specifically on lane-change scenarios. Results showed statistically significant differences between what is perceived as safe by drivers…
The Responsibility-Sensitive Safety (RSS) model offers provable safety for vehicle behaviors such as minimum safe following distance. However, handling worst-case variability and uncertainty may significantly lower vehicle permissiveness, and in some situations safety cannot be guaranteed. Digging deeper into Newtonian mechanics, we identify complications that result from considering vehicle status, road geometry and environmental parameters. An especially challenging situation occurs if these parameters change during the course of a collision avoidance maneuver such as hard braking. As part o…

In this paper, we reveal that the rarity of safety-critical events in high-dimensional driving environments is the root cause of the safety challenge for autonomous vehicle development. We formulate it as "curse of rarity" (CoR) because it occurs ubiquitously in various safety-critical systems such as medical diagnosis and aerospace systems.
The processing requirement of autonomous vehicles (AVs) for high-accuracy perception in complex scenarios can exceed the resources offered by the in-vehicle computer, degrading safety and comfort. This paper proposes a sensor frame processing rate (FPR) estimation model, Zhuyi, that quantifies the minimum safe FPR continuously in a driving scenario. Zhuyi can be employed post-deployment as an online safety check and to prioritize work. Experiments conducted using a multi-camera state-of-the-art industry AV system show that Zhuyi's estimated FPRs are conservative, yet the system can maintain sa…
Recently, autonomous driving development ignited competition among car makers and technical corporations. Low-level automation cars are already commercially available. But high automated vehicles where the vehicle drives by itself without human monitoring is still at infancy. Such autonomous vehicles (AVs) rely on the computing system in the car to to interpret the environment and make driving decisions. Therefore, computing system design is essential particularly in enhancing the attainment of driving safety. However, to our knowledge, no clear guideline exists so far regarding safety-aware A…

The technology in the area of automated vehicles is gaining speed and promises many advantages. However, with the recent introduction of conditionally automated driving, we have also seen accidents. Test protocols for both, conditionally automated (e.g., on highways) and automated vehicles do not exist yet and leave researchers and practitioners with different challenges. For instance, current test procedures do not suffice for fully automated vehicles, which are supposed to be completely in charge for the driving task and have no driver as a back up. This paper presents current challenges of …

An open problem for autonomous driving is how to validate the safety of an autonomous vehicle in simulation. Automated testing procedures can find failures of an autonomous system but these failures may be difficult to interpret due to their high dimensionality and may be so unlikely as to not be important. This work describes an approach for finding interpretable failures of an autonomous system. The failures are described by signal temporal logic expressions that can be understood by a human, and are optimized to produce failures that have high likelihood. Our methodology is demonstrated for…

Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication has been proposed as a potential solution to improve the robustness and safety of autonomous vehicles by improving coordination and removing the barrier of non-line-of-sight sensing. Cooperative Vehicle Safety (CVS) applications are tightly dependent on the reliability of the underneath data system, which can suffer from loss of information due to the inherent issues of their different components, such as sensors failures or the poor performance of V2X technologies under dense communication channel load. Particularly, information loss affects the targe…
Studies predict that demand for autonomous vehicles will increase tenfold between 2019 and 2026. However, recent high-profile accidents have significantly impacted consumer confidence in this technology. The cause for many of these accidents can be traced back to the inability of these vehicles to correctly sense the impending danger. In response, manufacturers have been improving the already extensive on-vehicle sensor packages to ensure that the system always has access to the data necessary to ensure safe navigation. However, these sensor packages only provide a view from the vehicle's pers…

Commonly used metrics for evaluation of object detection systems (precision, recall, mAP) do not give complete information about their suitability of use in safety critical tasks, like obstacle detection for collision avoidance in Autonomous Vehicles (AV). This work introduces the Risk Ranked Recall ($R^3$) metrics for object detection systems. The $R^3$ metrics categorize objects within three ranks. Ranks are assigned based on an objective cyber-physical model for the risk of collision. Recall is measured for each rank.
An active area of research is to increase the safety of self-driving vehicles. Although safety cannot be guarenteed completely, the capability of a vehicle to predict the future trajectories of its surrounding vehicles could help ensure this notion of safety to a greater deal. We cast the trajectory forecast problem in a multi-time step forecasting problem and develop a Convolutional Neural Network based approach to learn from trajectory sequences generated from completely raw dataset in real-time. Results show improvement over baselines.
Verified controller synthesis uses world models that comprise all potential behaviours of humans, robots, further equipment, and the controller to be synthesised. A world model enables quantitative risk assessment, for example, by stochastic model checking. Such a model describes a range of controller behaviours some of which -- when implemented correctly -- guarantee that the overall risk in the actual world is acceptable, provided that the stochastic assumptions have been made to the safe side. Synthesis then selects an acceptable-risk controller behaviour. However, because of crossing abstr…

Cooperative driving, enabled by Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication, is expected to significantly contribute to the transportation system's safety and efficiency. Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC), a major cooperative driving application, has been the subject of many studies in recent years. The primary motivation behind using CACC is to reduce traffic congestion and improve traffic flow, traffic throughput, and highway capacity. Since the information flow between cooperative vehicles can significantly affect the dynamics of a platoon, the design and performance of control compo…

Balancing safety and performance is one of the predominant challenges in modern control system design. Moreover, it is crucial to robustly ensure safety without inducing unnecessary conservativeness that degrades performance. In this work we present a constructive approach for safety-critical control synthesis via Control Barrier Functions (CBF). By filtering a hand-designed controller via a CBF, we are able to attain performant behavior while providing rigorous guarantees of safety. In the face of disturbances, robust safety and performance are simultaneously achieved through the notion of In…
A connected and automated vehicle safety metric determines the performance of a subject vehicle (SV) by analyzing the data involving the interactions among the SV and other dynamic road users and environmental features. When the data set contains only a finite set of samples collected from the naturalistic mixed-traffic driving environment, a metric is expected to generalize the safety assessment outcome from the observed finite samples to the unobserved cases by specifying in what domain the SV is expected to be safe and how safe the SV is, statistically, in that domain. However, to the best …
As the performance of autonomous systems increases, safety concerns arise, especially when operating in non-structured environments. To deal with these concerns, this work presents a safety layer for mechanical systems that detects and responds to unstable dynamics caused by external disturbances. The safety layer is implemented independently and on top of already present nominal controllers, like pose or wrench tracking, and limits power flow when the system's response would lead to instability. This approach is based on the computation of the Largest Lyapunov Exponent (LLE) of the system's e…

When there are no surrounding vehicles, a learning-based model predictive control (MPC) trajectory planner is used to guarantee that the ego vehicle achieves better lap timing performance. When the ego vehicle is competing with other surrounding vehicles to overtake, an optimization-based planner generates multiple dynamically-feasible trajectories through parallel computation. Each trajectory is optimized under a MPC …

Multi-vehicle collision avoidance is a highly crucial problem due to the soaring interests of introducing autonomous vehicles into the real world in recent years. The safety of these vehicles while they complete their objectives is of paramount importance. Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) reachability is a promising tool for guaranteeing safety for low-dimensional systems. However, due to its exponential complexity in computation time, no reachability-based methods have been able to guarantee safety for more than three vehicles successfully in unstructured scenarios. For systems with four or more vehicles…
Recently there have been a lot of interests in introducing UAVs for a wide range of applications, making ensuring safety of multi-vehicle systems a highly crucial problem. Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) reachability is a promising tool for analyzing safety of vehicles for low-dimensional systems. However, reachability suffers from the curse of dimensionality, making its direct application to more than two vehicles intractable. Recent works have made it tractable to guarantee safety for 3 and 4 vehicles with reachability. However, the number of vehicles safety can be guaranteed for remains small. In this…
When considering the accuracy of sensors in an automated vehicle (AV), it is not sufficient to evaluate the performance of any given sensor in isolation. Rather, the performance of any individual sensor must be considered in the context of the overall system design. Techniques like redundancy and different sensing modalities can reduce the chances of a sensing failure. Additionally, the use of safety models is essential to understanding whether any particular sensing failure is relevant. Only when the entire system design is taken into account can one properly understand the meaning of safety-…
The development of safety applications for Connected Automated Vehicles requires testing in many different scenarios. However, the recreation of test scenarios for evaluating safety applications is a very challenging task. This is mainly due to the randomness in communication, difficulty in recreating vehicle movements precisely, and safety concerns for certain scenarios. We propose to develop a standalone Remote Vehicle Emulator that can reproduce V2V messages of remote vehicles from simulations or previous tests. This is expected to accelerate the development cycle significantly. Remote Vehi…
