Two-dimensional (2D) 1T-VSe$_2$ has prompted significant interest due to the discrepancies regarding alleged ferromagnetism (FM) at room temperature, charge density wave (CDW) states and the interplay between the two. We employed a combined Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) and density functional theory (DFT) approach to accurately investigate the magnetic properties, CDW states, and their response to strain in monolayer 1T-VSe$_2$. Our calculations show the delicate competition between various phases, revealing critical insights into the relationship between their energetic and structural properties. We performed classical Monte Carlo simulations informed by our DMC and DFT results, and found the magnetic transition temperature ($T_c$) of the undistorted (non-CDW) FM phase to be 228 K and the distorted (CDW) phase to be 68 K. Additionally, we studied the response of biaxial strain on the energetic stability and magnetic properties of various phases of 2D 1T-VSe$_2$ and found that small amounts of strain can increase the $T_c$, suggesting a promising route for engineering and enhancing magnetic behavior. Finally, we synthesized 1T-VSe$_2$ and performed Raman spectroscopy measurements, which were in close agreement with our calculated results, validating our computational approach. Our work emphasizes the role of highly accurate DMC methods in advancing the understanding of monolayer 1T-VSe$_2$ and provides a robust framework for future studies of 2D magnetic materials.
First principles calculations of magnetic and electronic properties of VSe2 describing the transition between two structural phases(H,T) were performed. Results of the calculations evidence rather low energy barrier ( 0.60 eV for monolayer) for transition betweenthe phases. The energy required for the deviation of Se atom or whole layer of selenium atoms on a small angle up to 10 degrees from initial positions is also rather low, 0.32 and 0.19 eV/Se, respectively. The changes in band structure of VSe2 caused by these motions of Se atoms should be taken into account for analysis of the experime…
Two-dimensional (2D) materials are known to possess emergent properties that are not found in their bulk counterparts. Recent experiments have shown a $\sqrt7 \times \sqrt3$ charge density wave (CDW) in monolayer 1T-VSe$_2$, in contrast to the $4\times 4\times 3$ phase in bulk. Here, via first-principles calculations, we show that multiple CDW phases compete in monolayer VSe$_2$, the ground state of which can be tuned by charge doping and in-plane biaxial strain. With doping, the $\sqrt7 \times \sqrt3$ CDW of the pristine VSe$_2$ transfers to a $3 \times \sqrt3$ and $4\times 4$ phase, the latt…
How magnetism emerges in low-dimensional materials such as transition metal dichalcogenides at the monolayer limit is still an open question. Herein, we present a comprehensive study of the magnetic properties of single crystal and monolayer VSe$_{2}$, both experimentally and \emph{ab initio}. Magnetometry, X-ray magnetic circular dichrosim (XMCD) and \emph{ab initio} calculations demonstrate that the charge density wave in bulk stoichiometric VSe$_{2.0}$ causes a structural distortion with a strong reduction in the density of sates at the Fermi level, prompting the system towards a non-magnet…
Magnetism in monolayer (ML) VSe2 has attracted broad interest in spintronics while existing reports have not reached consensus. Using element-specific X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, a magnetic transition in ML VSe2 has been demonstrated at the contamination-free interface between Co and VSe2. Via interfacial hybridization with Co atomic overlayer, a magnetic moment of about 0.4 uB per V atom in ML VSe2 is revealed, approaching values predicted by previous theoretical calculations. Promotion of the ferromagnetism in ML VSe2 is accompanied by its antiferromagnetic coupling to Co and a reduct…
We report a rectangular charge density wave (CDW) phase in strained 1T-VSe$_2$ thin films synthesized by molecular beam epitaxy on c-sapphire substrates. The observed CDW structure exhibits an unconventional rectangular 4a{\times}{\sqrt{3a}} periodicity, as opposed to the previously reported hexagonal $4a\times4a$ structure in bulk crystals and exfoliated thin layered samples. Tunneling spectroscopy shows a strong modulation of the local density of states of the same $4a\times\sqrt{3}a$ CDW periodicity and an energy gap of $2Δ_{CDW}=(9.1\pm0.1)$ meV. The CDW energy gap evolves into a full gap …
We present our results of the effect of Fe intercalation on the structural, transport and magnetic properties of 1T-VSe2. Intercalation of iron, suppresses the 110K charge density wave (CDW) transition of the 1T-VSe2. For the higher concentration of iron, formation of a new kind of first order transition at 160K takes place, which go on stronger for the 33% Fe intercalation. Thermopower of the FexVSe2 compounds (x = 0 - 0.33), however do not show any anomaly around the transition. The intercalation of Fe does not trigger any magnetism in the weak paramagnetic 1T-VSe2, and Fe is the low spin st…
To understand the magnetism of VSe$_2$, whose monolayer form has recently been reported to be a room temperature ferromagnet, Here, the combined method of conventional density functional theory with dynamical mean-field theory has been adopted. This higher-level computation method enables us to resolve many of existing controversies and contradictions in between theory and experiment. First of all, this new approach is shown to give the correct magnetic properties of both bulk and two-dimensional limit of VSe$_2$ which demonstrates its superiority to the conventional methods. The results demon…
The electronic structure of epitaxial films on LaCoO3(LCO) has been studied within first principle electronic structure calculations. A spin state transition is found to take place as a function of lattice strain which freezes in the intermediate spin state for non zero strain. In contrast to earlier speculations this is found to arise from substrate strain alone and angle variations are small. The intermediate spin state also stabilizes ferromagnetism in the ground state. The anomalous temperature dependence of the X-ray absorption spectra for films of LCO on LCO and its absence in films of L…
The strain-induced magnetism is observed in single-layer MoS2 with atomic single vacancies from density functional calculations. Calculated magnetic moment is no less than 2muB per vacancy defect. The straininduced band gap closure is concurrent with the occurrence of the magnetism. Possible physical mechanism of the emergence of strain-induced magnetism is illustrated. We also demonstrate the possibility to test the predicted magnetism in experiment. Our study may provide an opportunity for the design of new type of memory-switching or logic devices by using earth-rich nonmagnetic materials M…
Magnetic two-dimensional (2D) materials have received tremendous attention recently due to its potential application in spintronics and other magnetism related fields. To our knowledge, five kinds of 2D materials with intrinsic magnetism have been synthesized in experiment. They are CrI3, Cr2Ge2Te6, FePS3, Fe3GeTe2 and VSe2. Apart from the above intrinsic magnetic 2D materials, many strategies have also been proposed to induce magnetism in normal 2D materials such as atomic modification, spin valve and proximity effect. Various devices have also been designed to fulfill the basic functions of …
The effects of strain and hydrogenation on the electronic and magnetic properties of monolayers of Ta based dichalcogenides (TaX2; X = S, Se, Te) are investigated using density-functional theo-ry. We predict a complex scenario of strain-dependent magnetic phase transitions involving par-amagnetic, ferromagnetic, and modulated antiferromagnetic states. Covering one of the two chalcogenide surfaces with hydrogen switches the antiferromagnetic/nonmagnetic TaX2 mono-layers to a semiconductor. Our research opens new pathways towards the manipulation of mag-netic properties for future optoelectronic…
Mismatched lattice-constants at a van-der-Waals epitaxy interface often introduce in-plane strains to the lattice of the epitaxial layer, termed epitaxy-strain, where the strains do not follow the intra-layer Poisson's relation. Here, we presented the magnetic phase diagrams of the CrSe2 and CrTe2 mono- and bi-layers under epitaxy-strain up to 8 %, as predicted using density-functional-theory calculations. They show that the in-plane epitaxy-strain manipulates either the intra- or inter-layer magnetism of them. The in-plane strain varies the interlayer distance, defined using an inter-layer Po…
The interplay between magnetism, band topology, and electronic correlation in low dimensions has been a fascinating subject of research. Here, we propose two-dimensional (2D) material systems which demonstrate such an interesting interplay. Based on first-principles calculations and structural search algorithms, we identify three lowest energy 2D CoSe structures, termed as the $α$-, $β$-, and $γ$-CoSe. {We show that $α$- and $β$-CoSe are two rare examples of 2D antiferromagnetic metals, which are related to their Fermi surfaces nesting features, and meanwhile, $γ$-CoSe is a ferromagnetic metal…
We use first-principles calculations based on density functional theory to investigate the interplay between oxygen vacancies, A-site cation size / tolerance factor, epitaxial strain, ferroelectricity and magnetism in the perovskite manganite series, AMnO3 (A=Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+). We find that, as expected, increasing the volume through either chemical pressure or tensile strain generally lowers the formation energy of neutral oxygen vacancies consistent with their established tendency to expand the lattice. Increased volume also favors polar distortions, both because competing rotations of the o…
Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides have attracted great attention recently. Motivated by a recent study of crystalline bulk VTe$_2$, we theoretically investigated the spin-charge-lattice interplay in monolayer VTe$_2$. To understand the controversial experimental reports on several different charge density wave ground states, we paid special attention to the 'hidden' role of antiferromagnetism as its direct experimental detection may be challenging. Our first-principles calculations show that the 4$\times$1 charge density wave and the corresponding lattice deformation are accompa…
The effects of biaxial strain on the impurity-induced magnetism in P-doped graphene (P-graphene) and N-doped silicene (N-silicene) are studied by means of spin-polarized density functional calculations, using the supercell approach. The calculations were performed for three different supercell sizes $4\times 4$, $5\times 5$, and $6\times 6$, in order to simulate three different dopant concentrations 3.1, 2.0 and 1.4 %, respectively. For both systems, the calculated magnetic moment is 1.0 $μ_B$ per impurity atom for the three studied concentrations. From the analysis of the electronic structure…
Transition-metal oxides with an ABO$_3$ perovskite structure exhibit strongly entangled structural and electronic degrees of freedom and thus, one expects to unveil exotic phases and properties by acting on the lattice through various external stimuli. Using the Jahn-Teller active praseodymium vanadate Pr$^{3+}$V$^{3+}$O$_3$ compound as a model system, we show that PrVO$_3$ Néel temperature T$_N$ can be raised by 40 K with respect to the bulk when grown as thin films. Using advanced experimental techniques, this enhancement is unambiguously ascribed to a tetragonality resulting from the epitax…
Single-crystalline membranes of functional materials enable the tuning of properties via extreme strain states; however, conventional routes for producing membranes require the use of sacrificial layers and chemical etchants, which can both damage the membrane and limit the ability to make them ultrathin. Here we demonstrate the epitaxial growth of the cubic Heusler compound GdPtSb on graphene-terminated Al$_2$O$_3$ substrates. Despite the presence of the graphene interlayer, the Heusler films have epitaxial registry to the underlying sapphire, as revealed by x-ray diffraction, reflection high…
Structural stability, electronic structure, and magnetism of the $d^9$ double infinite-layer La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_5$F under chemical pressure and epitaxial strain
We study how strain affects orbital ordering and magnetism at the interface between SrMnO$_3$ and LaMnO$_3$ from density-functional calculations and interpret the basic results in terms of a three-site Mn-O-Mn model. Magnetic interaction between the Mn atoms is governed by a competition between the antiferromagnetic superexchange of the Mn t$_{2g}$ core spins and the ferromagnetic double exchange of the itinerant e$_g$ electrons. While the core electrons are relatively unaffected by the strain, the orbital character of the itinerant electron is strongly affected, which in turn causes a large c…
We measured the magnetization depth profile of a (La1-xPrx)1-yCayMnO3 (x = 0.60\pm0.04, y = 0.20\pm0.03) film as a function of applied bending stress using polarized neutron reflectometry. From these measurements we obtained a coupling coefficient relating strain to the depth dependent magnetization. We found application of compressive (tensile) bending stress along the magnetic easy axis increases (decreases) the magnetization of the film.
Aiming at increasing the ferroelectric polarization in AFM-E ortho-\hmo, we investigate the in-plane strain effects on both the magnetic configuration and the polarization by means of density functional theory calculations and model Hamiltonian approaches. Our results show that the net polarization is largely enhanced under compressive strain, due to an increase of the electronic contribution to the polarization, whereas the ionic contribution is found to decrease. We identify the electron-lattice coupling, due to Jahn-Teller (JT) distortions, and its response to strain to be responsible for t…
The double perovskite La2NiMnO6 (LNMO) exhibits complex magnetism due to the competition of magnetic interactions that are strongly affected by structural and magnetic inhomogeneities. In this work, we study the effect of oxygen annealing on the structure and magnetism of epitaxial thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition. The key observations are that a longer annealing time leads to a reduction of saturation magnetization and an enhancement in the ferromagnetic transition temperature. We explain these results based upon epitaxial strain and oxygen defect engineering. The oxygen enrichment…
Designing two-dimensional (2D) materials with magnetic and topological properties has continuously attracted intense interest in fundamental science and potential applications. Here, on the basis of first-principles calculations, we predict the coexistence of antiferromagnetism and Dirac nodal loop (NL) in the monolayer MnB, where the band crossing points are very close to the Fermi Level. Remarkably, a moderate strain can induce an antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition, driving the monolayer MnB to a ferromagnetic metal with Weyl NLs. Such a type of topological quantum phase tra…
We study the magnetization of square and hexagonal graphene dots. It is shown that two classes of hexagonal dots have a second order phase transition at a critical Hubbard energy $U$, whoose value is similar to the one in bulk graphene, albeit the dots do not have a density of states proportional to the absolute value of the energy, relatively to the Dirac point. Furthermore, we show that a particular class of hexagonal dots having zig-zag edges, does not exhibit zero energy edge states. We also study the effect of uniaxial strain on the evolution of the magnetization of square dots, and find …
Magnetism in lanthanum cobaltite (LCO, LaCoO$_3$) appears to be strongly dependent on strain, defects, and nanostructuring. LCO on strontium titanate (STO, SrTiO$_3$) is a ferromagnet with an interesting strain relaxation mechanism that yields a lattice modulation. However, the driving force of the ferromagnetism is still controversial. Experiments debate between a vacancy-driven or strain-driven mechanism for the ferromagnetism of epitaxial LCO. We found that a weak lateral modulation of the superstructure is sufficient to promote ferromagnetism. We find that ferromagnetism appears under unia…
The compressive strain effects on the magnetic ground state and electronic structure of strained GdTiO 3 have been studied by the first-principles method. Different from the congeneric YTiO3 and LaTiO3 cases both of which becomes the A-type antiferromagnetism on the (001) LaAlO3 substrate despite their contrastive magnetism, the ground state of strained GdTiO3 on the LaAlO3 substrate changes from the original ferromagnetism to G-type antiferromagnetim, instead of the A-type one although Gd 3+ is between Y3+ and La3+. Only when the in-plane compressive strain is large enough, e.g. on the (001) …
The emergence of magnetic reconstructions at the interfaces of oxide heterostructures are often explained via subtle modifications in the electronic densities, exchange couplings, or strain. Here an additional possible route for induced magnetism is studied in the context of the (LaNiO$_3$)$_n$/(LaMnO$_3$)$_n$ superlattices using a hybrid tight-binding model. In the LaNiO$_3$ region, the induced magnetizations decouple from the intensity of charge leakage from Mn to Ni, but originate from the spin-filtered quantum confinement present in these nanostructures. In general, the induced magnetizati…
Diluted magnetic semiconductors possessing intrinsic static magnetism at high temperatures represent a promising class of multifunctional materials with high application potential in spintronics and magneto-optics. In the hexagonal Fe-doped diluted magnetic oxide, 6H-BaTiO$_{3-δ}$, room-temperature ferromagnetism has been previously reported. Ferromagnetism is broadly accepted as an intrinsic property of this material, despite its unusual dependence on doping concentration and processing conditions. However, the here reported combination of bulk magnetization and complementary in-depth local-p…
We study the coexistence of strain- and charge-mediated magnetoelectric coupling in a cobalt (0-7 nm) wedge on ferroelectric [Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$/Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$]$_{0.68}$-[PbTiO$_{3}$]$_{0.32}$ (011) using surface-sensitive x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy at the Co L$_{3,2}$ edges. Three distinct electric field driven remanent magnetization states can be set in the Co film at room temperature. Ab-initio density functional theory calculations unravel the relative contributions of both strain and charge to the observed magnetic anisotropy changes illustrating magnetoelectro-elastic …
Bulk and nanoparticle powders of LaCoO3 (LCO) were synthesized, and their magnetic and structural properties were studied using SQUID magnetometry and neutron diffraction. The bulk and large nanoparticles exhibit weak ferromagnetism (FM) below T ~ 85K and a crossover from strong to weak antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations near a transition expressed in the lattice parameters, To ~ 40K. This crossover does not occur in the smallest nanoparticles; instead, the magnetic behavior is predominantly ferromagnetic. The amount of FM in the nanoparticles depends on the amount of Co3O4 impurity phase, w…
Multiferroics have found renewed interest in topological magnetism and for logic-in-memory applications. Among them, SrMnO$_{3}$, possessing strong magnetoelectric coupling is gaining attention for the design of coexisting magnetic and polar orders upon straining. Here we demonstrate antiferromagnetic exchange interactions in strained SMO thin films extracted from a new feature in the phase response of Spin Hall magnetoresistance, which has not been explored in earlier works, such as in magnetic insulators. We explain our findings with a model that incorporates magnetic anisotropy along [110] …
A systematic first-principles study has been performed to understand the magnetism of thin film SrRuO$_3$ which lots of research efforts have been devoted to but no clear consensus has been reached about its ground state properties. The relative t$_{2g}$ level difference, lattice distortion as well as the layer thickness play together in determining the spin order. In particular, it is important to understand the difference between two standard approximations, namely LDA and GGA, in describing this metallic magnetism. Landau free energy analysis and the magnetization-energy-ratio plot clearly …
First-principles calculations to study the electronic and magnetic properties of bulk, oxygen-deficient SrTiO$_3$ (STO) under different doping conditions and densities have been conducted. The appearance of magnetism in oxygen-deficient STO is not determined solely by the presence of a single oxygen vacancy but by the density of free carriers and the relative proximity of the vacant sites. We find that while an isolated vacancy behaves as a non-magnetic double donor, manipulation of the doping conditions allows the stability of a single donor state, with emergent local moments coupled ferromag…
Two-dimensional (2D) chromium tellurides have attracted considerable research interest for their high Curie temperatures. Their magnetic properties have been found diverse in various experiments, the understanding of which however remains limited. In this work, we report that the magnetic ordering of ultrathin chromium tellurides is structure dependent and can be tuned by external strain. Based on first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo simulations, we show long-range stable magnetism with high and low Curie temperature, and short-range magnetism in 2D Cr5Te8, CrTe2, and Cr2Te3 layers, r…
Controlling magnetism by using electric fields is a goal of research towards novel spintronic devices and future nano-electronics. For this reason, multiferroic heterostructures attract much interest. Here we provide experimental evidence, and supporting DFT analysis, of a transition in La0.65Sr0.35MnO3 (LSMO) thin film to a stable ferromagnetic phase, that is induced by the structural and strain properties of the ferroelectric BaTiO3 (BTO) substrate, which can be modified by applying external electric fields. X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) measurements on Mn L edges with a synchrotr…
In the bulk, LaCoO3 (LCO) is a paramagnet, yet in tensile strained thin films at low temperature ferromagnetism (FM) is observed, and its origin remains unresolved. Polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR) is a powerful tool to determine the depth profiles of the structure and magnetization simultaneously and thus the evolution of the interfacial FM with strain can be accurately revealed. Here we quantitatively measured the distribution of atomic density and magnetization in LCO films by PNR and found that the LCO layers near the heterointerfaces exhibit a reduced magnetization but an enhanced at…
Crystal structure, electronic state of Ir$^{4+}$, and magnetic properties of the antifluorite compound K$_2$IrBr$_6$ are studied using high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), thermodynamic and transport measurements, and ab initio calculations. The crystal symmetry is reduced from cubic at room temperature to tetragonal below 170 K and eventually to monoclinic below 122 K. These changes are tracked by the evolution of the non-cubic crystal-field splitting $Δ$ measured by RIXS. Non-monotonic changes in $Δ$ are ascribed to the competing effects …
High resolution neutron diffraction shows that the mesoscopic separation into ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases and the FM transition temperature T_C in the perovskite manganite (La_{1-y}Pr_{y})_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3 strongly depend on the quenched correlated disorder. The different disorder strengths are achieved by different procedures of the sample synthesis and quantitatively characterized by the micro-strain-type diffraction peak broadening. The system shifts to predominantly one phase state with smaller T_C as the correlated disorder strength is decreased supporting the …
Tuning the electronic and magnetic properties of a material through strain engineering is an effective strategy to enhance the performance of electronic and spintronic devices. Recently synthesized two-dimensional transition metal carbides M$_2$C (M=Hf, Nb, Sc, Ta, Ti, V, Zr), known as MXenes, has aroused increasingly attentions in nanoelectronic technology due to their unusual properties. In this paper, first-principles calculations based on density functional theory are carried out to investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of M$_2$C subjected to biaxial symmetric mechanical strai…
We present magnetization measurements on polycrystalline $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ under hydrostatic pressures up to 3~GPa and construct the temperature-pressure phase diagram of this material. Our data confirm that magnetic order breaks down in a first-order phase transition at $p_{\rm{c}}$ $\approx$ 1.4~GPa and additionally reveal a step-like feature -- magnetic signature of structural dimerization -- that appears at $p_{\rm{c}}$ and shifts to higher temperatures upon further compression. Following the structural study by L. S. I. Veiga et al. [Phys. Rev. B 100, 064104 (2019)], we suggest that a par…

Optical methods for magnetism manipulation have been considered as a promising strategy for ultralow-power and ultrahigh-speed spin switches, which becomes a hot spot in the field of spintronics. However, a widely applicable and efficient method to combine optical operation with magnetic modulation is still highly desired. Here, the strongly correlated electron material VO2 is introduced to realize phase-transition based optical control of the magnetism in NiFe. The NiFe/VO2 bilayer heterostructure features appreciable modulations in electrical conductivity (55%), coercivity (60%), and magneti…
Epitaxial strain imposed in complex oxide thin films by heteroepitaxy is recognized as a powerful tool for identifying new properties and exploring the vast potential of materials performance. A particular example is LaCoO3, a zero spin, nonmagnetic material in the bulk, whose strong ferromagnetism in a thin film remains enigmatic despite a decade of intense research. Here, we use scanning transmission electron microscopy complemented by X-ray and optical spectroscopy to study LaCoO3 epitaxial thin films under different strain states. We observed an unconventional strain relaxation behavior re…
Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials hosting nontrivial topological states are interesting for fundamental research as well as practical applications. Recently, the topological state of 2D Weyl half-semimetal (WHS) was proposed, which hosts fully spin polarized Weyl points robust against spin-orbit coupling in a 2D ferromagnetic system, and single-layer PtCl$_3$ was predicted as a platform for realizing this state. Here, we perform an extensive search of 2D PtCl$_3$ structures, by using the particle swarm optimization technique and density functional theory calculation. We show that the des…
We investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of hydrogenated carbon nanotubes using ab initio spin-polarized calculations within both the local density approximation (LDA) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). We find that the combination of charge transfer and carbon network distortion makes the spin-polarized flat-band appear in the tube's energy gap. Various spin-dependent ground state properties are predicted with the changes of the radii, the chiralities of the tubes and the concentration of hydrogen (H). It is found that strain or external electric field can effectiv…
