The possible existence of axions in the universe introduces the intriguing possibility of photon-axion conversion in strong magnetic fields, particularly near compact objects like supermassive black holes or even naked singularity. In this study, we investigate the conversion of photons into axions in the vicinity of a Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) spacetime, a well-known naked singularity solution. Our analysis reveals that photons can efficiently convert into axions with masses less than $100 \rm \ neV$. We calculate the conversion probability and find that it is significantly influenced by the characteristic parameter of the JNW spacetime. The potential observational signatures of this conversion, would be the dimming of photon ring in the X-ray and gamma-ray spectrum. Our findings suggest that compact objects like M87* could be prime candidates for detecting photon-axion conversion effects, provided future advances in high-resolution observations.
We show that the well-known most general static and spherically symmetric exact solution to the Einstein-massless scalar equations given by Wyman is the same as one found by Janis, Newman and Winicour several years ago. We obtain the energy associated with this spacetime and find that the total energy for the case of the purely scalar field is zero.
In the present paper we study the geodesic structure of the Janis-Newman-Winicour(JNW) space-time which contains a strong curvature naked singularity. This metric is an extension of the Schwarzschild geometry when a massless scalar field is included. We find that the strength parameter $μ$ of the scalar field effects on the geodesic structure of the JNW space-time. By solving the geodesic equation and analyzing the behavior of effective potential, we investigate all geodesic types of the test particle and the photon in the JNW space-time. At the same time we simulate all the geodesic orbits co…
We present higher-dimensional generalizations of the Buchdahl and Janis-Robinson-Winicour transformations which generate static solutions in the Einstein-Maxwell system with a massless scalar field. While the former adds a nontrivial scalar field to a vacuum solution, the latter generates a charged solution from a neutral one with the same scalar field. Applying these transformations to (i) a static solution with an Einstein base manifold, (ii) a multi-center solution, and (iii) a four-dimensional cylindrically symmetric solution, we construct several new exact solutions.
We study the optical appearance and the apparent radiation flux of a thin accretion disk around the static Janis-Newman-Winicour naked singularity. We confine ourselves to the astrophysically most relevant case, when the solution possesses a photon sphere, assuming that the radiation emitted by the disk is described by the Novikov-Thorne model. The observable images resemble closely the visual appearance of the Schwarzschild black hole, as only quantitative differences are present. For the Janis-Newman-Winicour solution the accretion disk appears smaller, and its emission is characterized by a…
We study here circular timelike geodesics in the Janis-Newman-Winicour and Gamma metric spacetimes which contain a strong curvature naked singularity and reduce to the Schwarzschild metric for a specific value of one of the parameters. We show that for both the metrics the range of allowed parameters can be divided into three regimes where structure of the circular geodesics is qualitatively different. It follows that the properties of the accretion disks around such naked singularities can be significantly different from those of disks around black holes. This adds to previous studies showing…
In this paper, we construct the rotating Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) naked singularity spacetime using Newman-Janis Algorithm (NJA). We analyse NJA with and without complexification methods and find that the energy conditions do satisfied when we skip the complexification step. We study the shadows cast by rotating JNW naked singularity and compare them with the shadows cast by the Kerr black hole. We find that the shadow of the rotating naked singularity can be distinguished from the shadow of the Kerr black hole. While we analyse the precession of timelike bound orbits in rotating JNW spacet…
In general, energy extraction methods such as the Penrose process and the magnetic Penrose process are thought to be reliant on the existence of an ergoregion. Inside an ergoregion, there are negative energy states that allow a particle to extract energy and escape to an observer at infinity. In this paper, we considered the electromagnetic field in the rotating Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) spacetime. This concept is feasible because an accretion disc forms an electromagnetic field around compact objects. After that, we briefly examine negative energy orbits and their significance in energy ext…
Inspired by the recent proposal for the quantum effective dynamics of the Schwarzschild spacetime given in \cite{AOS1}, we investigate the effective dynamics of the loop quantized Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) spacetime which is an extension of the Schwarzschild spacetime with an extra minimally coupled massless scalar field. Two parameters are introduced in order to regularize the Hamiltonian constraint in the quantum effective dynamics. These two parameters are assumed to be Dirac observables when the effective dynamics is solved. By carefully choosing appropriate conditions for these two para…
The final fate of gravitational collapse of massive stars has been a subject of interest for a long time since such a collapse may lead to black holes and naked singularities alike. Since, the formation of naked singularities is forbidden by the cosmic censorship conjecture, exploring their observational differences from black holes may be a possible avenue to search for these exotic objects. The simplest possible naked singularity spacetime emerges from the Einstein massless scalar field theory with the advantage that it smoothly translates to the Schwarzschild solution by the variation of th…
We investigate the timelike geodesics and the periapsis precession of orbits in the Fisher-Janis-Newman-Winicour-Wyman spacetime. This spacetime represents the naked singularity spacetime in the Einstein-massless scalar system. We revisit the results in the previous studies and relax the assumptions about the eccentricity of a bound orbit and the size of a semilatus. We find that the negative periapsis precession occurs when the spacetime sufficiently deviates from the Schwarzschild spacetime. In particular, for the small eccentric orbits, we show the negative periapsis precession occurs for $…

We examine here the acceleration of particles and high energy collisions in the the Janis-Newman- Winicour (JNW) spacetime, which is an extension of the Schwarzschild geometry when a massless scalar field is included. We show that while the center of mass energy of collisions of particles near the event horizon of a blackhole is not significantly larger than the rest mass of the interacting particles, in an analogous situation, it could be arbitrarily large in the JNWspacetime near the naked singularity. The high energy collisions are seen to be generic in the presence of a photon sphere in th…
It is commonly thought that the final product of gravitational collapse is a black hole. Nevertheless, theoretical studies have not yet provided a final answer to the question whether black holes are the only possible outcome or whether naked singularities are also allowed. Observational tests may thus represent a complementary approach. In the present paper, we consider the Janis-Newman-Winicour metric, which describes a rotating source with a surface-like naked singularity. We calculate iron line shapes in the reflection spectrum of a putative disk around a Janis-Newman-Winicour singularity …
We study scalar radiation spectra from a particle in circular orbit, in the background of the Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) naked singularity. The differences in the nature of the spectra, from what one obtains with a Schwarzschild black hole, is established. We also compute the angular distribution of the spectra.
We revisit the problem of the rotating generalization of the Fisher-Janis-Newman-Winicour solution of the minimal Einstein-scalar theory proving that the two previously proposed solutions do not satisfy the equations of motion. We also derive several new spinning solutions with the scalar charge, which are endowed with oblate deformation.
We prove the stability of a spacetime with a naked singularity under scalar field perturbations, where the perturbations are regular at the singularity. This spacetime, found by Janis, Newman and Winicour, and independently by Wyman, is sourced by a massless scalar field and also arises as a certain limit of a class of charged dilatonic solutions in string theory. This stability result opens up specific questions for investigation related to the cosmic censorship conjecture and the mechanism by which it is implemented in nature.
We derive here the orbit equations of particles in naked singularity spacetimes, namely the Bertrand (BST) and Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) geometries, and for the Schwarzschild black hole. We plot the orbit equations and find the Perihelion precession of the orbits of particles in the BST and JNW spacetimes and compare these with the Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. We find and discuss different distinguishing properties in the effective potentials and orbits of particle in BST, JNW and Schwarzschild spacetimes, and the particle trajectories are shown for the matching of BST with an externa…
The motion of time-like test particles in the Fisher/Janis-Newman-Winicour (F/JNW) spacetime is studied with the Hamiltonian formulation of the geodesic equations. The spacetime is characterised by its mass parameter $r_g$ and scalar field parameter $ν$. The innermost bound and stable circular orbits are calculated and the effective potential is analysed. Consistent with numerical results in earlier literature, for $ν<1/2$, particles with non-zero angular momentum encounter an infinite potential barrier, preventing them from reaching the naked singularity at $r=r_g$. Periodic orbits in the spa…
Though the cosmic censorship conjecture states that spacetime singularities must be hidden from an asymptotic observer by an event horizon, naked singularities can form as the end product of a gravitational collapse under suitable initial conditions, so the question of how to observationally distinguish such naked singularities from standard black hole spacetimes becomes important. In the present paper, we try to address this question by studying the ringdown profile of the Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) naked singularity under axial gravitational perturbation. The JNW spacetime has a surfacelike…
Considering a strong field limit, we investigate the retrolensing phenomenon in the vicinity of a Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) naked singularity embedded in a scalar field. We assume that the light rays from a nearby source are reflected by the photon sphere of the naked singularity, acting as a lens, to create a pair of images. The analytic expressions of the lensing coefficients $\bar{a}$ and $\bar{b}$ are obtained, which are scalar dependent and discordant with \cite{Bozza:2002b}. Moreover, considering the powerful supermassive black hole candidates Sgr A* and M87*, we examined the influence…
Recent observations of the Milky-way galactic center at various frequencies suggest a supermassive compact object. Generally, that supermassive compact object is assumed to be a `Black Hole', having more than four million solar masses. In this work, we study the observational appearance at $230$ GHz and probe the nature of Sagittarius-A* (Sgr A*) as the naked singularity. Here, we consider the first type of Joshi-Malafarina-Narayan (JMN-1) and Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) naked singularity spacetimes which are anisotropic fluid solutions of the Einstein field equations. Motivated by radiatively…
We study the optical appearance of a thin accretion disk around the strongly naked static Janis-Newman-Winicour singularity. The solution does not possess a photon sphere, which results in the formation of a complex structure of bright rings in the central region of the disk image. Such structure is absent in the case of the Schwarzschild black hole with a thin accretion disk, where instead of the image we observe the black hole shadow. Some of the rings emit with the maximal observable radiation flux from the accretion disk, and should be experimentally detectable. Thus, this qualitatively ne…
We model the supermassive galactic center of the Milky Way galaxy as a strongly naked singularity lens described by the Janis-Newman-Winicour metric. This metric has an ordinary mass and massless scalar charge parameters. For very accurate results, we use the Virbhadra-Ellis lens equation for computations. The galactic center serving as gravitational lens gives rise to 4 images: 2 images on the same side as the source and 2 images on the opposite side of the source from the optic axis. We compute positions and time delays of these images for many values of the angular source position. The time…
Besides scalarized black holes and wormholes, Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories allow also for particle-like solutions. The scalar field of these particle-like solutions diverges at the origin, akin to the divergence of the Coulomb potential at the location of a charged particle. However, these particle-like solutions possess a globally regular metric, and their effective stress energy tensor is free from pathologies, as well. We determine the domain of existence for particle-like solutions in a number of Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories, considering dilatonic and power-law coupling f…
In this paper, we first investigate some aspects of frame dragging in strong gravity. The computations are carried out for the Kerr black hole and for the rotating Janis-Newman-Winicour solution, that is known to have a naked singularity on a surface at a finite radius. For the Kerr metric, a few interesting possibilities of gyroscope precession frequency, as measured by a Copernican observer outside the ergoregion, are pointed out. It is shown that for certain angular velocities of a stationary observer, this frequency might vanish exactly, close to the ergoregion. Similar computations are re…
We study the time delay between successive relativistic images in gravitational lensing as a possible discriminator between various collapse end states and hence as a probe of cosmic censorship. Specifically we consider both black hole and naked singularity spacetimes admitting photon spheres where an infinite number of relativistic Einstein Rings can be formed at almost the same radius and naked singularity spacetimes without a photon sphere where multiple relativistic Einstein Rings can form almost up to the center of the lens. The metrics we have considered to sample these scenarios are the…

We study the strong gravitational lensing in the background of a rotating non-Kerr compact object with a deformed parameter $ε$ and an unbound rotation parameter $a$. We find that the photon sphere radius and the deflection angle depend sharply on the parameters $ε$ and $a$. For the case in which the black hole is more prolate than a Kerr black hole, the photon sphere exists only in the regime $ε\leqε_{max}$ for prograde photon. The upper limit $ε_{max}$ is a function of the rotation parameter $a$. As $ε>ε_{max}$, the deflection angle of the light ray closing very to the naked singularity is a…
Konoplya and Zhidenko have proposed recently a rotating non-Kerr black hole metric beyond General Relativity and make an estimate for the possible deviations from the Kerr solution with the data of GW 150914. We here study the strong gravitational lensing in such a rotating non-Kerr spacetime with an extra deformation parameter. We find that the condition of existence of horizons is not inconsistent with that of the marginally circular photon orbit. Moreover, the deflection angle of the light ray near the weakly naked singularity covered by the marginally circular orbit diverges logarithmicall…

We formulate a generic Newtonian like analogous potential for static spherically symmetric general relativistic (GR) spacetime, and subsequently derived proper Newtonian like analogous potential corresponding to Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) and Reissner-Nordström (RN) spacetimes, both exhibiting naked singularities. The derived potentials found to reproduce the entire GR features including the orbital dynamics of the test particle motion and the orbital trajectories, with precise accuracy. The nature of the particle orbital dynamics including their trajectory profiles in JNW and RN geometries s…
A strongly naked singularity (SNS) was modelled at the center of the Galaxy. This specific type of naked singularity was characterized in 2008 by Virbhadra and Keeton. The lens is described using the Janis-Newman-Winicour metric, which has an ordinary mass and massless scalar charge parameters. Gravitational lensing by the SNS gives rise to 4 images: 2 images on the same side as the source and 2 images on the opposite side of the source from the optic axis. We compute magnification centroid, magnification centroid shift, and total absolute magnification for many values of the angular source po…
We study the gravitational deflection of relativistic massive particles by Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) spacetimes (also known as a rotating source with a surface-like naked singularity), and a rotating Kerr-like wormholes. Based on the recent article [K. Jusufi, Phys. Rev. D 98, 064017 (2018)], we extend some of these results by exploring the effects of naked singularity and Kerr-like objects on the deflection of particles. We start by introducing coordinate transformation leading to an isotropic line element which gives the refraction index of light for the corresponding optical medias. On th…
