Compared to the intensive investigation on the 3d transition-metal (TM)-based spin ladder compounds, less attention has been paid to the ones constructed by the rare-earth (RE) ions. Herein, we report a family of RE-based spin ladder compounds Ba2RE2Ge4O13 (RE = Pr, Nd, Gd-Ho) crystallized into the monoclinic structure with the space group C2/c. The RE ions are arranged on a two-leg spin ladder motif along the b-axis, where the rung and leg exchange interactions are bridged via the RE-O-RE pathways and RE-O-Ge-O-RE routes, respectively. Moreover, the much shorter rung distance in the RE2O12 dimer units than the leg distance suggests Ba2RE2Ge4O13 to be a strong-rung spin ladder system. All the synthesized Ba2RE2Ge4O13 (RE = Pr, Nd, Gd-Ho) compounds exhibit the dominant antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions and absence of magnetic order down to 1.8 K. Among the family members, Ba2Dy2Ge4O13 can be described by Jeff = 1/2 Kramers doublet states, the low temperature specific heat indicates the coexistence of spin dimerized state with broad maximum at ~ 2.4 K and long-range AFM order with TN = 0.81 K. This family of Ba2RE2Ge4O13 compounds thereby provides a rare platform to investigate the novel spin ladder physics constructed by 4f electrons.
We study the impact of the diagonal frustrating couplings on the quantum phase diagram of a two-leg ladder composed of alternating spin-1 and spin-1/2 rungs. As the coupling strength is increased the system successively exhibits two gapped paramagnetic phases (a rung-singlet and a Haldane-like non-degenerate states) and two ferrimagnetic phases with different ferromagnetic moments per rung. The first two states are similar to the phases studied in the frustrated spin-1/2 ladder, whereas the magnetic phases appear as a result of the mixed-spin structure of the model. A detailed characterization…
Treating an exactly rung-dimerized spin ladder as a reference model we study perturbatively zero temperature quantum fluctuations in spin ladders with slightly destroyed rung-dimerization. Analytic expressions are obtained for the gas parameter (density of rung-triplets) and the ground state energy per rung. At a strong diagonal frustration as well as at a rather strong antiferromagnetic rung coupling these results well agree with the previous numerical calculations.
On the basis of periodic boundary conditions we study perturbatively a large N asymptotics (N is the number of rungs) for the ground state energy density and gas parameter of a spin ladder with slightly destroyed rung-dimerization. Exactly rung-dimerized spin ladder is treated as the reference model. Explicit perturbative formulas are obtained for three special classes of spin ladders.
We report the results of numerical calculations of rung-rung current correlations on a 2-leg t-J ladder with J/t=0.35 for dopings x=0.125 and x=0.19. We find that the amplitude of these correlations decays exponentially. We argue that this can be understood within a bosonization framework in terms of the pinned phase variables associated with a C1SO phase with d_{x^2-y^2}-like power law pairing correlations.
Three magnon bound states in all total spin sectors of general nonintegrable exactly rung-dimerized spin ladder are obtained by Bethe Ansatz. Basing on this result a dispersion law for $m$-magnon ($m>3$) bound states is conjectured. It is suggested that (depending on correlations between coupling constants) a behavior of the gas parameter (density of rung-triplets) on the boundary of the rung-dimerized phase may either be smooth or have a leap.
The ground state properties of a frustrated spin-1/2 system is studied on a trellis ladder which is composed of two zigzag ladders interacting through rung interactions. The presence of rung interaction between the zigzag ladders induces a non-magnetic ground state, although, each of zigzag ladders has ferromagnetic order in weak antiferromagnetic leg interaction limit. The rung interaction also generates rung dimers and opens spin gap which increases rapidly with rung interaction strength. The correlation between spins decreases exponentially with the distance between them.
We suggest a family of spin-ladder models with exact singlet-rung vacuum. In addition to the terms describing interactions along legs and rungs the Hamiltonian has frustration and cyclic terms. Using coordinate Bethe ansatze all one- and two-dimensional states are constructed. The explicit formula for zero-temperature Raman scattering cross section is derived. The corresponding line-shapes are strongly asymmetric and have no more than one van-Hove singularity. The results are in good agreement with experimental data.
Small single crystals of Rb$_3$Ni$_2$(NO$_3$)$_7$ were obtained by crystallization from anhydrous nitric acid solution of rubidium nitrate and nickel nitrate hexahydrate. The basic elements of the crystal structure of this new compound are isolated spin-1 two-leg ladders of Ni$^{2+}$-ions connected by (NO$_3$)$^-$ groups. The experimental data show the absence of long range magnetic order at T $\geq 2$~K. LDA+U calculations and the detailed analysis of the experimental data, i.e. of the magnetic susceptibility, the specific heat in magnetic fields up to 9~T, the magnetization, and of the high-…
The quantum phases of 2-leg spin-1/2 ladders with skewed rungs are obtained using exact diagonalization of systems with up to 26 spins and by density matrix renormalization group calculations to 500 spins. The ladders have isotropic antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange $J_2 > 0$ between first neighbors in the legs, variable isotropic AF exchange $J_1$ between some first neighbors in different legs, and an unpaired spin per odd-membered ring when $J_1 \gg J_2$. Ladders with skewed rungs and variable $J_1$ have frustrated AF interactions leading to multiple quantum phases: AF at small $J_1$, either F…
An exactly solvable effective model is suggested for an asymmetric spin ladder with dimerized rungs. Magnon mode truncation originated from magnon decay (recently observed in the 1D compound ${\rm IPA-CuCl}_3$) is naturally described within this model. Using Bethe Ansatze we described a one-magnon sector and obtained relations between interaction constants of the model and experimentally observable quantities such as the gap and truncation energies, spin velocity and the truncation wave vector. It is also shown that structure factor turns to zero at the truncation point.
The ground-state phase diagram of Heisenberg spin-1/2 system on a two-leg ladder with rung alternation is studied by combining analytical approaches with numerical simulations. For the case of ferromagnetic leg exchanges a unique ferrimagnetic ground state emerges, whereas for the case of antiferromagnetic leg exchanges several different ground states are stabilized depending on the ratio between exchanges along legs and rungs. For the more general case of a honeycomb-ladder model for the case of ferromagnetic leg exchanges besides usual rung-singlet and saturated ferromagnetic states we obtai…
We investigate the properties of antiferromagnetic spin-S ladders with the help of local Berry phases defined by imposing a twist on one or a few local bonds. In gapped systems with time reversal symmetry, these Berry phases are quantized, hence able in principle to characterize different phases. In the case of a fully frustrated ladder where the total spin on a rung is a conserved quantity that changes abruptly upon increasing the rung coupling, we show that two Berry phases are relevant to detect such phase transitions: the rung Berry phase defined by imposing a twist on one rung coupling, a…
The spin gap material IPA-CuCl3 has been extensively studied as a ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic bondalternating S = 1/2 chain. This description of the system was derived from structural considerations and bulk measurements. New inelastic neutron scattering experiments reveal a totally different picture: IPA-CuCl3 consists of weakly coupled spin ladders with antiferromagnetic legs and ferromagnetic rungs. The ladders run perpendicular to the originally supposed bondalternating chain direction. The ferromagnetic rungs make this system equivalent to a Haldane S = 1 antiferromagnet. With a gap e…
A phase diagram of the t-J three-leg ladder as a function of hole dopping is derived in the limit where the coupling parameters along the rungs, $t_{\perp}$ and $J_{\perp}$, are taken to be much larger than those along the legs, $t_{||}$ and $J_{||}$ At large exchange coupling along the rungs, $J_{\perp}/t_{\perp}> 3 / \sqrt{2}$, there is a transition from a low-dopping Luttinger liquid phase into a Luther-Emery liquid at a critical hole concentration $n_{crit}\approx 1/3$. In the opposite case, $J_{\perp}/t_{\perp}< 3 / \sqrt{2}$, there as a sequence of three Luttinger liquid phases (LLI, LLI…
Using continuous unitary transformations (CUT) we calculate the one-triplet gap for the antiferromagnetic S=1/2 two-leg spin ladder with additional four-spin exchange interactions in a high order series expansion about the limit of isolated rungs. By applying a novel extrapolation technique we calculate the transition line between the rung-singlet phase and a spontaneously dimerized phase with dimers on the legs. Using this efficient extrapolation technique we are able to analyze the crossover from strong rung coupling to weakly coupled chains.
Employing mainly numerical methods, we explore the ground-state phase diagram of an anisotropic $S=1/2$ ladder, in which leg interactions are uniform and isotropic, while rung interactions are alternating and have a common Ising-type anisotropy. We determine the phase diagram in the case where $J_{\rm leg}=0.2$ (antiferromagnetic), $J_{\rm rung}=-1.0$ (ferromagnetic) and $|J_{\rm rung}'|\!\leq\!1.0$, the first one being the magnitude of the leg interaction and the second and third ones those of the rung interactions, which are alternating. It is emphasized that the system has a frustration whe…
We have studied the ground state phase diagram of a spin ladder with alternating rung exchange $J^{n}_{\perp} = J_{\perp}[1 + (-1)^{n} δ]$ in a magnetic filed, in the limit where the rung coupling is dominant. In this limit the model is mapped onto an $XXZ$ Heisenberg chain in a uniform and staggered longitudinal magnetic fields, where the amplitude of the staggered field is $\sim δ$. We have shown that the magnetization curve of the system exhibits a plateau at magnetization equal to the half of the saturation value. The width of a plateau scales as $δ^ν$, where $ν=4/5$ in the case of ladder …
We report magnetization, specific heat, and NMR measurements of 3-Br-4-F-V [=3-(3-bromo-4-fluorophenyl)-1,5-diphenylverdazyl], a strong-rung S=1/2 Heisenberg spin ladder with ferromagnetic leg interactions. We explain the magnetic and thermodynamic properties based on the strong-rung regime. Furthermore, we find a field-induced successive phase transition in the specific heat and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1. 19F-NMR spectra for higher- and lower-temperature phases indicate partial magnetic order and incommensurate long-range order, respectively, evidencing the presence of fru…
We study the antiferromagnetic spin-half Heisenberg ladder in the presence of an additional frustrating rung spin which is motivated and relevant also for the description of real two-dimensional materials such as the two-dimensional trimer magnet Ba$_4$Ir$_3$O$_{10}$. We study the zero-temperature phase diagram, where we combine numerical and analytical methods into an overall consistent description. All numerical simulations are also accompanied by studies of the dynamical spin structure factor obtained via the density matrix renormalization group. Overall, we find in the regime of strong run…
Cu(C$_8$H$_6$N$_2$)Cl$_2$, a strong-rung spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder compound, is probed by means of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy in the field-induced gapless phase above $H_{c1}$. The temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth is analyzed in the quantum field theory framework, suggesting that the anisotropy of magnetic interactions plays a crucial role, determining the peculiar low-temperature ESR linewidth behavior. In particular, it is argued that the uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (which is allowed on the bonds along the ladder legs) can be the source of this behav…
Three-magnon problem for exactly rung-dimerized spin ladder is brought up separately at all total spin sectors. At first a special duality transformation of the $\rm Schr\ddot odinger$ equation is found within general outlook. Then the problem is treated within Coordinate Bethe Ansatze. A straightforward approach is developed to obtain pure scattering states. At values S=0 and S=3 of total spin the $\rm Schr\ddot odinger$ equation has the form inherent in the $XXZ$ chain. For $S=1,2$ solvability holds only in five previously found {\it completely integrable} cases. Nevertheless a partial S=1 B…
One-magnon problem for spin-ladders with exact singlet-rung ground state in arbitrary oriented constant and staggered magnetic fields is studied. For two special configurations when the both fields are parallel or perpendicular to each other the exact formulas for eigenstates and eigenvectors are presented. In the parallel case the one-magnon contribution to the ESR absorption line shape is obtained. The latter is non-Lorentzian, has finite range and a gap around resonance. For low fields both the range of the spectrum and the width of the gap are controlled by the width of the one-magnon zone…
Ground-state and finite-temperature properties of $S=1/2$ Heisenberg ladders with a ferromagnetic leg, an antiferromagnetic leg, and antiferromagnetic rungs are studied. It is shown that a partial ferrimagnetic phase extends over a wide parameter range in the ground state. The numerical results are supported by an analytical calculation based on a mapping onto the nonlinear $σ$ model and a perturbation calculation from the strong-rung limit. It is shown that the partial ferrimagnetic state is a spontaneously magnetized Tomonaga--Luttinger liquid with incommensurate magnetic correlation, which …
Recently, a surprising low-temperature behavior has been revealed in a two-leg ladder Ising model with trimer rungs (Weiguo Yin, arXiv:2006.08921). Motivated by these findings, we study this model from another perspective and demonstrate that the reported observations are related to a critical phenomenon in the standard Ising chain. We also discuss a related curiosity, namely, the emergence of a power-law behavior characterized by quasicritical exponents.
We study a two-leg spin-1/2 ladder with isotropic exchanges and biquadratic interactions in the basic plaquettes. It is shown that for the extremely frustrated case, the system exhibits a self-organized phase separation. In some parameter regions, the singlet rungs form a Wigner-like lattice in the triplet-rung host. There are three types of elementary excitations in this modulation phase, i.e., the spinons in a triplet domain, the broken singlet rungs and the deformation of the Wigner-like lattice. The flux phase induced by an external magnetic field in the rung-dimerized phase is also discus…
Two integrable quantum spin ladder systems will be introduced associated with the fundamental su(2|2) solution of the Yang-Baxter equation. The first model is a generalized quantum Ising system with Ising rung interactions. In the second model the addition of extra interactions allows us to impose Heisenberg rung interactions without violating integrability. The existence of a Bethe ansatz solution for both models allows us to investigate the elementary excitations for antiferromagnetic rung couplings. We find that the first model does not show a gap whilst in the second case there is a gap fo…
We report low temperature electron spin resonance experimental and theoretical studies of an archetype $S=1/2$ strong-rung spin ladder material (C$_{5}$H$_{12}$N)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$. Unexpected dynamics is detected deep in the Tomonaga-Luttinger spin liquid regime. Close to the point where the system is half-magnetized (and believed to be equivalent to a gapless easy plane chain in zero field) we observed orientation-dependent spin gap and anomalous $g$-factor values. Field theoretical analysis demonstrates that the observed low-energy excitation modes in magnetized (C$_{5}$H$_{12}$N)$_{2}$CuBr$_…
A spin-1/2 two-leg ladder with four-spin ring exchange is studied by quantized Berry phases, used as local order parameters. Reflecting local objects, non-trivial ($π$) Berry phase is founded on a rung for the rung-singlet phase and on a plaquette for the vector-chiral phase. Since the quantized Berry phase is topological invariant for gapped systems with the time reversal symmetry, topologically identical models can be obtained by the adiabatic modification. The rung-singlet phase is adiabatically connected to a decoupled rung-singlet model and the vector-chiral phase is connected to a decoup…
In frustrated spin ladders the interplay of frustration and correlations leads to the familiar Haldane (H) and rung-singlet (RS) phases. The nature of the transition between these two phases is still under debate. In this paper we tackle this issue using tools of quantum information theory. We consider frustrated mixed-spin-(1, 1/2) ladders with antiferromagnetic leg, rung and diagonal couplings, and calculate various quantities, such as the entanglement entropy (EE), the Schmidt gap, and the level degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum (ES). We use two numerical techniques, the infinite time…
We study the ground state and excitation spectrum of a quasi one-dimensional nanostructure consisting of a pole and rungs oriented in the opposite directions ("centipede ladder", CL) at quarter filling. The spin and charge excitation spectra are found in the limits of small and large longitudinal hopping $t_\|$ compared to the on-rung hopping rate $t_\perp$ and exchange coupling $I_\perp$. At small $t_\|$ the system with ferromagnetic on-rung exchange demonstrates instability against dimerization. Coherent propagation of charge transfer excitons is possible in this limit. At large $t_\|$ CL be…
Singlet quantum phases and magnetization of the frustrated spin-1/2 ladder with ferromagnetic (F) exchange in legs and alternating F-AF exchange in rungs
We formulate charge transfer model for a single doped spin ladder, relevant for the intrinsically doped plane of coupled spin ladders in Sr$_{3}$Ca$_{11}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$. Assuming the presence of the experimentally observed charge order in the system we solve the model using Hartree-Fock approximation. Our results show the profound stability of the Zhang-Rice singlets with respect to other configurations of doped holes, in agreement with recent x-ray absorption measurements.
We study an integrable two-leg spin-1/2 ladder with an XYZ-type rung interaction. Exact rung states and rung energies are obtained for the anisotropic rung coupling in the presence of a magnetic field. Magnetic properties are analyzed at both zero and finite temperatures via the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz and the high-temperature expansion. According to different couplings in the anisotropic rung interaction, there are two cases in which a gap opens, with the ground state involving one or two components in the absence of a magnetic field. We obtain the analytic expressions of all critical fiel…
We study a frustrated two-leg spin ladder with alternate isotropic Heisenberg and Ising rung exchange interactions, whereas, interactions along legs and diagonals are Ising-type. All the interactions in the ladder are anti-ferromagnetic in nature and induce frustration in the system. This model shows four interesting quantum phases: (i) stripe rung ferromagnetic (SRFM), (ii) stripe rung ferromagnetic with edge singlet (SRFM-E), (iii) anisotropic antiferromagnetic (AAFM), and (iv) stripe leg ferromagnetic (SLFM) phase. We construct a quantum phase diagram for this model and show that in stripe …
A two-parameter family of quantum spin ladders with local bilinear and biquadratic interactions is shown to be solvable by a mapping onto fragments of integrable spin 1 chains. The phase diagram, consisting of four phases, and the ground state properties are discussed. In one novel phase, the ground state is made up of plaquette singlets and rung singlets, alternating with a three-rung periodicity.
We study two similar spin ladder systems with the ferromagnetic leg coupling. First model includes two sorts of spins, s= 1/2 and s= 1, and the second model comprises only s=1/2 legs coupled by a "triangular" rung exchange. The antiferromagnetic (AF) rung coupling destroys the long-range order and eventually makes the systems equivalent to the AF s=1/2 Heisenberg chain. We investigate the situation by different methods in weak and strong rung coupling limits. Particularly we compare the spin-wave theory and the bosonization method in the weak coupling regime of the second model. We analyze the…
By means of Monte Carlo techniques, we study the role of disorder on a system of hard-core bosons in a two-leg ladder with both intra-chain ($t$) and inter-chain ($t^\prime$) hoppings. We find that the phase diagram as a function of the boson density, disorder strength, and $t^\prime/t$ is far from being trivial. This contrasts the case of spin-less fermions where standard localization arguments apply and an Anderson-localized phase pervades the whole phase diagram. A compressible Bose-glass phase always intrudes between the Mott insulator with zero (or one) bosons per site and the superfluid …
Several experiments in the context of ladder materials have recently shown that the study of simple models of anisotropic ladders (i.e. with different couplings along legs and rungs) is important for the understanding of these compounds. In this paper Exact Diagonalization studies of the one-band Hubbard and t-J models are reported for a variety of densities, couplings, and anisotropy ratios. The emphasis is given to the one-particle spectral function A(q,ω) which presents a flat quasiparticle dispersion at the chemical potential in some region of parameter space. This is correlated with the e…
We have measured the magnetization of the organic compound BIP-BNO (3,5'-bis(N-tert-butylaminoxyl)-3',5-dibromobiphenyl) up to 76 T where the magnetization is saturated. The S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg two-leg spin-ladder model accounts for the obtained experimental data regarding the magnetization curve, which is clarified using the quantum Monte Carlo method. The exchange constants on the rung and the side rail of the ladder are estimated to be J(rung)/kB = 65.7 K and J(leg)/kB = 14.1 K, respectively, deeply in the strong coupling region: J(rung)/J(leg) > 1.
The $S=1/2$ quantum spin ladder system with the anisotropic ferromagnetic exchange interaction on the rung under magnetic field is investigated using the numerical diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) analyses. It is found that the nematic-spin-correlation-dominant Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) appears in some high magnetic field. It is included in the TLL phase where the two-magnon bound state is realized. For some suitable parameters, after the field-induced phase transition from this two-magnon-bound TLL phase to the single-magnon TLL one, the re-entrant tra…
We report the numerical discovery of a pair-density-wave (PDW) superconductor from doping either (i) a spin-one Haldane chain or (ii) a two-leg ladder in the rung singlet phase in which the doped charges occupy a single leg. We model these systems using a generalized Kondo model. The itinerant electrons are correlated and described by the $t-J$ model, and are further coupled to a spin $1/2$ Heisenberg model through the Kondo coupling $J_K$. When the density of electrons $x$ is one, the Mott insulator is in a Haldane phase or in a rung singlet phase depending on whether $J_K$ is negative or pos…
We analyze the electronic structure of a mixed-valence ladder system. We find that structural anisotropy and complex electron correlations lead to on-rung charge localization and insulating character. Charge fluctuations within the rung of the ladder interact strongly to the lattice degrees of freedom, which gives rise to large pseudo Jahn--Teller effects. The phase transition in NaV$_2$O$_5$ should be driven by this kind of mechanism.
We report density-matrix renormalization group calculations of spin gaps in the quarter-filled correlated two-leg rectangular ladder with bond-dimerization along the legs of the ladder. In the small rung-coupling region, dimerization along the leg bonds can lead to large enhancement of the spin gap. Electron-electron interactions further enhance the spin gap, which is nonzero for all values of the rung electron hopping and for arbitrarily small bond-dimerization. Very large spin gaps, as are found experimentally in quarter-filled band organic charge-transfer solids with coupled pairs of quasi-…
We investigate, through the density-matrix renormalization group and the Lanczos technique, the possibility of a two-leg Kondo ladder present an incommensurate orbital order. Our results indicate a staggered short-range orbital order at half-filling. Away from half-filling our data are consistent with an incommensurate quasi-long-range orbital order. We also observed that an interaction between the localized spins enhances the rung-rung current correlations.
Mean field and exact diagonalization studies on the quasiparticle excitation of an SO(5) symmetric two-leg ladder system are reported. It is shown that the energy gap in the quasiparticle excitation is caused by the formation of rung singlet states. We find that shadow peaks can occur above the Fermi surface with antiferromagnetic electron correlations involving only rungs in the spin ladder.
In this paper, we construct a class of spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic (AFM) two-chain ladder models consisting of blocks of n-spin tetrahedral clusters alternating with two-spin rungs. For n=4 and 6 and in extended parameter regimes, the exact ground state of the ladder is shown to be a product of the ground states of the rungs and the n-spin blocks, in both zero and finite magnetic fields. In the latter case, magnetization/site (m) versus magenetic field (h) plot exhibits well-defined magnetization plateaus.
Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) has become an important tool for studying elementary excitations in correlated materials. Here, we present a systematic theoretical investigation of the Cu L-edge RIXS spectra of undoped and doped cuprate two-leg spin-ladders in both the non-spin-conserving (NSC) and spin-conserving (SC) channels. The spectra are rich and host many exotic excitations. In the NSC-channel of the undoped case, we identify one-triplon and bound $\textit{triplet}$ two-triplon excitations in the strong-rung coupling limit, as well as confined spinons in the weak-rung coupli…
We investigate a ladder system with two inequivalent legs, namely a Hubbard chain and a one-dimensional electron gas. Analytical approximations, the density matrix renormalization group method, and continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo simulations are used to determine ground-state properties, gaps, and spectral functions of this system at half-filling. Evidence for the existence of four different phases as a function of the Hubbard interaction and the rung hopping is presented. First, a Luttinger liquid exists at very weak interchain hopping. Second, a Kondo-Mott insulator with spin and charge …
The magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of the mixed spin-(1/2,1) Ising-Heisenberg model on a two-leg ladder with dimer-rung alternation are exactly examined under an adiabatic demagnetization process using the transfer-matrix formalism. We notify that the magnetization curve of the model exhibits plateaux as a function of the applied magnetic field and cyclic four-spin Ising interaction at certain rational fractions of the saturation value. We precisely investigate the ability of cooling/heating of the model nearby the critical points at which discontinuous ground-state phase transition oc…
A two-leg quenched random bond disordered antiferromagnetic spin$-1/2$ Heisenberg ladder system is investigated by means of stochastic series expansion (SSE) quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method. Thermal properties of the uniform and staggered susceptibilities, the structure factor, the specific heat and the spin gap are calculated over a large number of random realizations in a wide range of disorder strength. According to our QMC simulation results, the considered system has a special temperature point at which the specific heat take the same value regardless of the strength of the disorder. Mor…
We theoretically study the magnetic excitations in a frustrated two-leg spin-ladder system, in which antiferromagnetic exchange interactions act on the nearest-neighbor and next-nearestneighbor bonds in the leg direction, and on the nearest-neighbor bonds in the rung direction. A dynamical spin correlation function at zero temperature is calculated by using the dynamical density-matrix renormalization-group method for possible magnetic phases, i.e., columnar-dimer and rung-singlet phases. The columnar-dimer phase is characterized by multi-spinon excitations with spin gap, while the rung-single…
The ground-state magnetic phase diagram of a spin $S=1/2$ two-leg ladder with alternating rung exchange $J_{\perp}(n)=J_{\perp}[1 + (-1)^{n} δ]$ is studied using the analytical and numerical approaches. In the limit where the rung exchange is dominant, we have mapped the model onto the effective quantum sine-Gordon model with topological term and identified two quantum phase transitions at magnetization equal to the half of saturation value from a gapped to the gapless regime. These quantum transitions belong to the universality class of the commensurate-incommensurate phase transition. We hav…
We study the T = 0 magnetization of frustrated two-leg spin ladders with arbitrary value of the spin S. In the strong rung limit, we use degenerate perturbation theory to prove that frustration leads to magnetization plateaux at fractional values of the magnetization for all spins S, and to determine the critical ratios of parallel to diagonal inter-rung couplings for the appearance of these plateaux. These ratios depend both on the plateau and on the spin. To confirm these results, and to investigate the properties of these ladders away from the strong coupling limit, we have performed extens…
We investigate the quantum-critical behavior between the rung-singlet phase with hidden string order and the Néel phase with broken $SU(2)$-symmetry on quantum spin ladders with algebraically decaying unfrustrated long-range Heisenberg interactions. Combining perturbative continuous unitary transformations (pCUT) with a white-graph expansion and Monte Carlo simulations yields high-order series expansions of energies and observables in the thermodynamic limit about the isolated rung-dimer limit. The breakdown of the rung-singlet phase allows to determine the critical line and the entire set of …
We studied the effects of the incommensurate structural modulations on the ladder subsystem of the $Sr\_{14-x}Ca\_{x}Cu\_{24}O\_{41}$ family of compounds using ab-initio explicitly-correlated calculations. From these calculations we derived $t-J$ model as a function of the fourth crystallographic coordinate $τ$ describing the incommensurate modulations. It was found that in the highly calcium-doped system, the on-site orbital energies are strongly modulated along the ladder legs. On the contrary the two sites of the ladder rungs are iso-energetic and the holes are thus expected to be delocaliz…
We study three-leg antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with the periodic boundary conditions in the rung direction. Since the rungs form regular triangles, spin frustration is induced. We use the density-matrix renormalization group method to investigate the ground state. We find that the spin excitations are always gapped to remove the spin frustration as long as the rung coupling is nonzero. We also visibly confirm spin-Peierls dimerization order in the leg direction. Both the spin gap and the dimerization order are basically enhanced as the rung coupling increases.
