Information sharing is critical in time-sensitive and realistic multi-robot exploration, especially for smaller robotic teams in large-scale environments where connectivity may be sparse and intermittent. Existing methods often overlook such communication constraints by assuming unrealistic global connectivity. Other works account for communication constraints (by maintaining close proximity or line of sight during information exchange), but are often inefficient. For instance, preplanned rendezvous approaches typically involve unnecessary detours resulting from poorly timed rendezvous, while pursuit-based approaches often result in short-sighted decisions due to their greedy nature. We present IR2, a deep reinforcement learning approach to information sharing for multi-robot exploration. Leveraging attention-based neural networks trained via reinforcement and curriculum learning, IR2 allows robots to effectively reason about the longer-term trade-offs between disconnecting for solo exploration and reconnecting for information sharing. In addition, we propose a hierarchical graph formulation to maintain a sparse yet informative graph, enabling our approach to scale to large-scale environments. We present simulation results in three large-scale Gazebo environments, which show that our approach yields 6.6-34.1% shorter exploration paths when compared to state-of-the-art baselines, and lastly deploy our learned policy on hardware. Our simulation training and testing code is available at https://ir2-explore.github.io.

We present a novel framework for collaboration amongst a team of robots performing Pose Graph Optimization (PGO) that addresses two important challenges for multi-robot SLAM: i) that of enabling information exchange "on-demand" via Active Rendezvous without using a map or the robot's location, and ii) that of rejecting outlying measurements. Our key insight is to exploit relative position data present in the communication channel between robots to improve groundtruth accuracy of PGO. We develop an algorithmic and experimental framework for integrating Channel State Information (CSI) with multi…

In this paper, we formulate and solve the intermittent deployment problem, which yields strategies that couple \emph{when} heterogeneous robots should sense an environmental process, with where a deployed team should sense in the environment. As a motivation, suppose that a spatiotemporal process is slowly evolving and must be monitored by a multi-robot team, e.g., unmanned aerial vehicles monitoring pasturelands in a precision agriculture context. In such a case, an intermittent deployment strategy is necessary as persistent deployment or monitoring is not cost-efficient for a slowly evolving…
This paper considers the problem of distributed state estimation using multi-robot systems. The robots have limited communication capabilities and, therefore, communicate their measurements intermittently only when they are physically close to each other. To decrease the distance that the robots need to travel only to communicate, we divide them into small teams that can communicate at different locations to share information and update their beliefs. Then, we propose a new distributed scheme that combines (i) communication schedules that ensure that the network is intermittently connected, an…

Monitoring the health and vigor of grasslands is vital for informing management decisions to optimize rotational grazing in agriculture applications. To take advantage of forage resources and improve land productivity, we require knowledge of pastureland growth patterns that is simply unavailable at state of the art. In this paper, we propose to deploy a team of robots to monitor the evolution of an unknown pastureland environment to fulfill the above goal. To monitor such an environment, which usually evolves slowly, we need to design a strategy for rapid assessment of the environment over la…

The multi-robot adaptive sampling problem aims at finding trajectories for a team of robots to efficiently sample the phenomenon of interest within a given endurance budget of the robots. In this paper, we propose a robust and scalable approach using Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning for cooperated Adaptive Sampling (MARLAS) of quasi-static environmental processes. Given a prior on the field being sampled, the proposed method learns decentralized policies for a team of robots to sample high-utility regions within a fixed budget. The multi-robot adaptive sampling problem requires the robots to…
In multi-robot systems where a central decision maker is specifying the movement of each individual robot, a communication failure can severely impair the performance of the system. This paper develops a motion strategy that allows robots to safely handle critical communication failures for such multi-robot architectures. For each robot, the proposed algorithm computes a time horizon over which collisions with other robots are guaranteed not to occur. These safe time horizons are included in the commands being transmitted to the individual robots. In the event of a communication failure, the r…

An essential task for a multi-robot system is generating a common understanding of the environment and relative poses between robots. Cooperative tasks can be executed only when a vehicle has knowledge of its own state and the states of the team members. However, this has primarily been achieved with direct rendezvous between underwater robots, via inter-robot ranging. We propose a novel distributed multi-robot simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) framework for underwater robots using imaging sonar-based perception. By passing only scene descriptors between robots, we do not need to pa…

Computation load-sharing across a network of heterogeneous robots is a promising approach to increase robots capabilities and efficiency as a team in extreme environments. However, in such environments, communication links may be intermittent and connections to the cloud or internet may be nonexistent. In this paper we introduce a communication-aware, computation task scheduling problem for multi-robot systems and propose an integer linear program (ILP) that optimizes the allocation of computational tasks across a network of heterogeneous robots, accounting for the networked robots' computatio…
Motivated by exploration of communication-constrained underground environments using robot teams, we study the problem of planning for intermittent connectivity in multi-agent systems. We propose a novel concept of information-consistency to handle situations where the plan is not initially known by all agents, and suggest an integer linear program for synthesizing information-consistent plans that also achieve auxiliary goals. Furthermore, inspired by network flow problems we propose a novel way to pose connectivity constraints that scales much better than previous methods. In the second part…

Multi-agent mapping is a fundamentally important capability for autonomous robot task coordination and execution in complex environments. While successful algorithms have been proposed for mapping using individual platforms, cooperative online mapping for teams of robots remains largely a challenge. We focus on probabilistic variants of mapping due to its potential utility in downstream tasks such as uncertainty-aware path-planning. A critical question to enabling this capability is how to process and aggregate incrementally observed local information among individual platforms, especially whe…
In this paper, we develop a distributed intermittent communication and task planning framework for mobile robot teams. The goal of the robots is to accomplish complex tasks, captured by local Linear Temporal Logic formulas, and share the collected information with all other robots and possibly also with a user. Specifically, we consider situations where the robot communication capabilities are not sufficient to form reliable and connected networks while the robots move to accomplish their tasks. In this case, intermittent communication protocols are necessary that allow the robots to temporari…
While a number of excellent review articles on military robots have appeared in existing literature, this paper focuses on a distinct sub-space of related problems: small military robots organized into moderately sized squads, operating in a ground combat environment. Specifically, we consider the following: - Command of practical small robots, comparable to current generation, small unmanned ground vehicles (e.g., PackBots) with limited computing and sensor payload, as opposed to larger vehicle-sized robots or micro-scale robots; - Utilization of moderately sized practical forces of 3-10 robo…

In this paper, we solve a multi-robot informative path planning (MIPP) task under the influence of uncertain communication and adversarial attackers. The goal is to create a multi-robot system that can learn and unify its knowledge of an unknown environment despite the presence of corrupted robots sharing malicious information. We use a Gaussian Process (GP) to model our unknown environment and define informativeness using the metric of mutual information. The objectives of our MIPP task is to maximize the amount of information collected by the team while maximizing the probability of resilien…
