We study the optical response of the alternating twisted trilayer graphene by making use of a unitary transformation for the trilayer Hamiltonian and the Kubo formulation of linear response theory. The layer-resolved optical conductivities are expressed in terms of contributions from effective twisted bilayer and single-layer systems along with their coupling. We show that the in-plane magnetic response is proportional to this coupling between the twisted bilayer and single-layer systems; and, due to the different energy scales, the in-plane magnetic response is negligibly small. We also formulate a local electro-magnetic response that involves the vertical gradients of the magnetic field and moment.
We study the electronic properties of a twisted trilayer graphene, where two of the layers have Bernal stacking and the third one has a relative rotation with respect to the AB-stacked layers. Near the Dirac point, the AB-twisted trilayer graphene spectrum shows two parabolic Bernal-like bands and a twisted-like Dirac cone. For small twist angles, the parabolic bands present a gap that increases for decreasing rotation angle. There is also a shift in the twisted-like Dirac cone with a similar angle dependence. We correlate the gap in the trilayer with the shift of the Dirac cone in an isolated…
Electronic structures and their Landau quantizations in twisted graphene bilayer and trilayer are investigated using scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy. In the twisted trilayer, the top graphene layer and second layer are AB (Bernal) stacking and there is a stacking misorientation between the second layer and third layer. Both the twisted bilayer and trilayer exhibit two pronounced low-energy van Hove singularities (VHSs) in their spectra. Below the VHSs, the observed Landau level quantization in the twisted bilayer is identical to that of massless Dirac fermion in graphene monola…
We construct a continuum model of twisted trilayer graphene using {\it ab initio} density-functional-theory calculations, and apply it to address twisted trilayer electronic structure. Our model accounts for moiré variation in site energies, hopping between outside layers and within layers. We focus on the role of a mirror symmetry present in ABA graphene trilayers with a middle layer twist. The mirror symmetry is lost intentionally when a displacement field is applied between layers, and unintentionally when the top layer is shifted laterally relative to the bottom layer. We use two band stru…
It has recently been shown that superconductivity in magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene survives to in-plane magnetic fields that are well in excess of the Pauli limit, and much stronger than the in-plane critical magnetic fields of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene. The difference is surprising because twisted bilayers and trilayers both support the magic-angle flat bands thought to be the fountainhead of twisted graphene superconductivity. We show here that the difference in critical magnetic fields can be traced to a $\mathcal{C}_2 \mathcal{M}_{h}$ symmetry in trilayers that survives …
Twisted graphene multilayers have demonstrated to yield a versatile playground to engineer controllable electronic states. Here, by combining first-principles calculations and low-energy models, we demonstrate that twisted graphene trilayers provide a tunable system where van Hove singularities can be controlled electrically. In particular, it is shown that besides the band flattening, bulk valley currents appear, which can be quenched by local chemical dopants. We finally show that in the presence of electronic interactions, a non-uniform superfluid density emerges, whose non-uniformity gives…
We show that in van der Waals stacks of twisted hexagonal layers the proximity induced Rashba spin-orbit coupling can be affected by quantum interference. We calculate the quantum phase responsible for this effect in graphene--transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers as a function of interlayer twist angle. We show how this quantum phase affects the spin-polarization of the graphene bands and discuss its potential effect on spin-to-charge conversion measurements. In twisted trilayers symmetries can be broken as well as restored for certain twist angles. This can be used to deduce the effects o…
Twisted graphene multilayers exhibit strongly correlated insulating states and superconductivity due to the presence of ultraflat bands near the charge neutral point. In this paper, the response of ultraflat bands to lattice relaxation and a magnetic field in twisted trilayer graphene (tTLG) with different stacking arrangements is investigated by using a full tight-binding model. We show that lattice relaxations are indispensable for understanding the electronic properties of tTLG, in particular, of tTLG in the presence of mirror symmetry. Lattice relaxations renormalize the quasiparticle spec…
Twisted van der Waals materials have been shown to host a variety of tunable electronic structures. Here we put forward twisted trilayer graphene (TTG) as a platform to emulate heavy fermion physics. We demonstrate that TTG hosts extended and localized modes with an electronic structure that can be controlled by interlayer bias. In the presence of interactions, the existence of localized modes leads to the development of local moments, which are Kondo coupled to coexisting extended states. By electrically controlling the effective exchange between local moments, the system can be driven from a…
We study the symmetries of twisted trilayer graphene's band structure under various extrinsic perturbations, and analyze the role of long-range electron-electron interactions near the first magic angle. The electronic structure is modified by these interactions in a similar way to twisted bilayer graphene. We analyze electron pairing due to long-wavelength charge fluctuations, which are coupled among themselves via the Coulomb interaction and additionally mediated by longitudinal acoustic phonons. We find superconducting phases with either spin singlet/valley triplet or spin triplet/valley sin…
Twisted trilayer graphene (TLG) may be the simplest realistic system so far, which has flat bands with nontrivial topology. Here, we give a detailed calculation about its band structures and the band topology, i.e. valley Chern number of the nearly flat bands, with the continuum model. With realistic parameters, the magic angle of twisted TLG is about 1.12$^{\circ}$, at which two nearly flat bands appears. Unlike the twisted bilayer graphene, a small twist angle can induce a tiny gap at all the Dirac points, which can be enlarged further by a perpendicular electric field. The valley Chern numb…
Here we show that twisted graphene trilayer made by misoriented stacking a graphene monolayer on top of a Bernal graphene bilayer can exhibit rich and tailored electronic properties. For the case that the graphene monolayer and bilayer are strongly coupled, both the massless Dirac fermions and massive chiral fermions coexist in the twisted trilayer, leading to unique in-plane chiral tunneling. For a weak coupling between the two graphene systems, the distinct chiralities and pseudospin textures of quasiparticles in monolayer and bilayer enable vertical valley-polarized quantum tunneling betwee…
Multilayered van der Waals structures often lack periodicity, which difficults their modeling. Building on previous work for bilayers, we develop a tight-binding based, momentum space formalism capable of describing incommensurate multilayered van der Waals structures for arbitrary lattice mismatch and/or misalignment between different layers. We demonstrate how the developed formalism can be used to model angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements, and scanning tunnelling spectroscopy which can probe the local and total density of states. The general method is then applied to inco…
We study the presence of higher-order van Hove singularities in mirror-symmetric twisted trilayer graphene. This geometry has recently emerged experimentally as a fascinating playground for studying correlated and exotic superconducting phases. We find that the trilayer hosts a zero-energy higher-order van Hove singularity with an exponent -1/3. The singularity is protected by the threefold rotation symmetry and a combined mirror-particle-hole symmetry and it can be tuned with only the twist angle and a perpendicular electric field. It arises from the combined merging of van Hove singularities…

We introduce twisted trilayer graphene (tTLG) with two independent twist angles as an ideal system for the precise tuning of the electronic interlayer coupling to maximize the effect of correlated behaviors. As established by experiment and theory in the related twisted bilayer graphene system, van Hove singularities (VHS) in the density of states can be used as a proxy of the tendency for correlated behaviors. To explore the evolution of VHS in the twist-angle phase space of tTLG, we present a general low-energy electronic structure model for any pair of twist angles. We show that the basis o…

Starting with twisted bilayer graphene, graphene-based moiré materials have recently been established as a new platform for studying strong electron correlations. In this paper, we study twisted graphene monolayers on trilayer graphene and demonstrate that this system can host flat bands when the twist angle is close to the magic-angle of 1.16$^\circ$. When monolayer graphene is twisted on ABA trilayer graphene, the flat bands are not isolated, but are intersected by a Dirac cone with a large Fermi velocity. In contrast, graphene twisted on ABC trilayer graphene (denoted AtABC) exhibits a gap …
Twisted trilayer graphene is a particularly promising moiré superlattice system, due to its tunability, strong superconductivity, and complex electronic symmetry breaking. Motivated by these properties, we study lattice relaxation and the long-wavelength phonon modes of this system. We show that mirror-symmetric trilayer graphene hosts, aside from the conventional acoustic phonon modes, two classes of shear modes, which are even and odd under mirror reflection. The mirror-even modes are found to be gapless and equivalent to the "phason" modes of twisted bilayer graphene, with appropriately res…
Understanding and tuning correlated states is of great interest and significance to modern condensed matter physics. The recent discovery of unconventional superconductivity and Mott-like insulating states in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) presents a unique platform to study correlation phenomena, in which the Coulomb energy dominates over the quenched kinetic energy as a result of hybridized flat bands. Extending this approach to the case of twisted multilayer graphene would allow even higher control over the band structure because of the reduced symmetry of the system. Here, we …
Motivated by the recent experimental realization of twisted trilayer graphene and the observed superconductivity that is associated with its flat bands at specific angles, we study trilayer graphene under the influence of different forms of light in the non-interacting limit. Specifically, we study four different types of stacking configurations with a single twisted layer. In all four cases, we study the impact of circularly polarized light and longitudinal light coming from a waveguide. We derive effective time-independent Floquet Hamiltonians and review light-induced changes to the band str…
Magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (MATTG) recently exhibited robust superconductivity at a higher transition temperature (TC) than the bilayer version. With electric gating from both the top and bottom sides, the superconductivity was found to be closely associated to two conditions: the finite broken mirror symmetry and carrier concentrations between two to three carriers per moiré unite cell. Both conditions may be achieved by graphene-metal contacts where charge transfers and interfacial electric fields are generated to balance work function mismatch. In this study, we explore the super…

Electrons in quantum materials exhibiting coexistence of dispersionless (flat) bands piercing dispersive (steep) bands can give rise to strongly correlated phenomena, and are associated with unconventional superconductivity. It is known that in twisted trilayer graphene steep Dirac cones can coexist with band flattening, but the phenomenon is not stable under layer misalignments. Here we show that such a twisted sandwiched graphene (TSWG) -- a three-layer van der Waals heterostructure with a twisted middle layer -- can have very stable flat bands coexisting with Dirac cones near the Fermi ener…

We consider twisted bilayer and trilayer graphene in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and explore the physics of Moiré spintronics. The electronic charge density has a sharp step right at the magic angles $θ_m$. As a result, local spin observables (polarization and equilibrium spin currents) have sharp peaks (of width about a small fraction of 1$^\circ$) as a function of the twist angle $θ$, and abrupt sign reversals at $θ_m$. Thereby, the magic angle can be determined in an unprecedented accuracy. In the first chiral limit, the spin currents vanish, but the peculiar pattern of the p…
Interfacial electron-transfer (ET) reactions underpin the interconversion of electrical and chemical energy. Pioneering experiments showed that the ET rate depends on the Fermi Dirac distribution of the electronic density of states (DOS) of the electrode, formalized in the Marcus Hush Chidsey (MHC) model. Here, by controlling interlayer twists in well-defined trilayergraphene moires, we show that ET rates are strikingly dependent on electronic localization in each atomic layer, and not the overall DOS. The large degree of tunability inherent to moire electrodes leads to local ET kinetics that …
Twistronics heterostructures provide a novel route to control the electronic single particle velocity and thereby to engineer strong effective interactions. Here we show that the reverse may also hold, i.e. that these interactions strongly renormalize the band structure. We demonstrate this mechanism for mirror-symmetric magic angle twisted trilayer graphene at charge neutrality and in the vicinity of a phase transition which can be described by an Ising Gross-Neveu critical point corresponding, e.g., to the onset of valley Hall or Hall order. While the non-interacting model displays massless …
Twisted graphene multi-layers have been recently demonstrated to share several correlation-driven behaviours with twisted bilayer graphene. In general, the van Hove singularities (VHSs) can be used as a proxy of the tendency for correlated behaviours. In this paper, we adopt an atomistic method by combining tight-binding method with the semi-classical molecular dynamics to investigate the electronic structures of twisted trilayer graphene (TTG) with two independent twist angles. The two independent twist angles can lead to the interference of the moiré patterns forming a variety of commensurat…
Stacking three monolayers of graphene with a twist generally produces two moiré patterns. A moiré of moiré structure then emerges at larger distance where the three layers periodically realign. We devise here an effective low-energy theory to describe the spectrum at distances larger than the moiré lengthscale. In each valley of the underlying graphene, the theory comprises one Dirac cone at the ${\bf Γ}_M$ point of the moiré Brillouin zone and two weakly gapped points at ${\bf K}_M$ and ${\bf K}'_M$. The velocities and small gaps exhibit a spatial dependence in the moiré-of-moiré unit cell, e…
Small-twist-angle bilayer graphene supports strongly correlated insulating states and superconductivity. Twisted few-layer graphene systems are likely to open up new directions for strong correlation physics in moiré superlattices. We derive and study moiré band models that describe the electronic structure of graphene trilayers in which one of the three layers is twisted by a small angle relative to perfect AAA, ABA, or ABC stacking arrangements. We find that the electronic structure depends very strongly on the starting stackings arrangement and on which layer is twisted. We identify ABA sta…
Twist, as a simple and unique degree of freedom, could lead to enormous novel quantum phenomena in bilayer graphene. A small rotation angle introduces low-energy van Hove singularities (VHSs) approaching the Fermi level, which result in unusual correlated states in the bilayer graphene. It is reasonable to expect that the twist could also affect the electronic properties of few-layer graphene dramatically. However, such an issue has remained experimentally elusive. Here, by using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), we systematically studied a twisted trilayer graphene (TTG) w…
Layers of two-dimensional materials stacked with a small twist-angle give rise to beating periodic patterns on a scale much larger than the original lattice, referred to as a moiré superlattice. When the stacking involves more than two layers with independent twist angles between adjacent layers, it generates moiré of moiré superlattices, with multiple length scales that control the system's behavior. Here we demonstrate these effects of a high-order moiré superlattice in twisted trilayer graphene with two consecutive small twist angles. We report correlated insulating states near the half fil…
The magnetic field generated Hofstadter butterfly in single-twist trilayer graphene (TLG) is investigated using circularly polarized light (CPL) and longitudinal light emanating from a waveguide. We show that single-twist TLG has two distinct chiral limits in the equilibrium state, and the central branch of the butterfly splits into two precisely degenerate components. The Hofstadter butterfly appears to be more discernible. We also discovered that CPL causes a large gap opening at the central branch of the Hofstadter butterfly energy spectrum and between the Landau levels, with a clear asymme…
In a recent experiment [Lin et al., arXiv:2112.07841], the superconducting phase hosted by a heterostructure of mirror-symmetric twisted trilayer graphene and WSe$_2$ was shown to exhibit significantly different critical currents in opposite directions in the absence of external magnetic fields. We here develop a microscopic theory and analyze necessary conditions for this zero-field superconducting diode effect. Taking into account the spin-orbit coupling induced in trilayer graphene via the proximity effect, we classify the pairing instabilities and normal-state orders and derive which combi…
Moiré superlattices that consist of two or more layers of two-dimensional materials stacked together with a small twist angle have emerged as a tunable platform to realize various correlated and topological phases, such as Mott insulators, unconventional uperconductivity and quantum anomalous Hall effect. Recently, the magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (MATTG) has shown both robust superconductivity similar to magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) and other unique properties, including the Pauli-limit violating and re-entrant superconductivity. These rich properties are deeply roote…
Magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (MATTG) recently emerged as a highly tunable platform for studying correlated phases of matter, such as correlated insulators and superconductivity. Superconductivity occurs in a range of doping levels that is bounded by van Hove singularities which stimulates the debate of the origin and nature of superconductivity in this material. In this work, we discuss the role of spin-fluctuations arising from atomic-scale correlations in MATTG for the superconducting state. We show that in a phase diagram as function of doping ($ν$) and temperature, nematic superco…

We show that the superconducivity in twisted graphene multilayers originates from a common feature, which is the strong valley symmetry breaking characteristic of these moiré systems at the magic angle. This leads to a breakdown of the rotational symmetry of the flat moiré bands down to $C_3$, and to ground states in which the time-reversal symmetry is broken for a given spin projection. However, this symmetry can be recovered upon exchange of spin-up and spin-down electrons, as we illustrate by means of a self-consistent microscopic Hartree-Fock resolution where the states for the two spin pr…
The incommensurate stacking of multi-layered two-dimensional materials is a challenging problem from a theoretical perspective and an intriguing avenue for manipulating their physical properties. Here we present a multi-scale model to obtain the mechanical relaxation pattern of twisted trilayer van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures with two independent twist angles, a generally incommensurate system without a supercell description. We adopt the configuration space as a natural description of such incommensurate layered materials, based on the local environment of atomic positions, bypassing the…

Due to its potential connection with nematicity, electronic anisotropy has been the subject of intense research effort on a wide variety of material platforms. The emergence of spatial anisotropy not only offers a characterization of material properties of metallic phases, which cannot be accessed via conventional transport techniques, but it also provides a unique window into the interplay between Coulomb interaction and broken symmetry underlying the electronic order. In this work, we utilize a new scheme of angle-resolved transport measurement (ARTM) to characterize electron anisotropy in m…
