This paper explores the sensitivity gains afforded by spin-squeezed states in atom interferometry, in particular using Bragg diffraction. We introduce a generalised input-output formalism that accurately describes realistic, non-unitary interferometers, including losses due to velocity selectivity and scattering into undesired momentum states. This formalism is applied to evaluate the performance of one-axis twisted spin-squeezed states in improving phase sensitivity. Our results show that by carefully optimising the parameters of the Bragg beam splitters and controlling the degree of squeezing, it is possible to improve the sensitivity of the interferometer by several dB with respect to the standard quantum limit despite realistic levels of losses in light pulse operations. However, the analysis also highlights the challenges associated with achieving these improvements in practice, most notably the impact of finite temperature on the benefits of entanglement. The results suggest ways of optimising interferometric setups to exploit quantum entanglement under realistic conditions, thereby contributing to advances in precision metrology with atom interferometers.
We give an analytical result for the quantum Fisher information of entangled coherent States in a lossy Mach-Zehnder Interferometer recently proposed by J. Joo et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 083601(2011)]. For small loss of photons, we find that the entangled coherent state can surpass the Heisenberg limit. Furthermore, The formalism developed here is applicable to the study of phase sensitivity of multipartite entangled coherent states.
The quantum Fisher information for a two-mode, Gaussian product state in an interferometer subject to photon loss is studied. We obtain the quantum Cramer-Rao bound on the achievable precision in phase estimation using such states. The scaling of the measurement precision with the mean photon number for such input product states is compared to the limited scaling for dual squeezed vacuum states and for dual squeezed, displaced vacuum states.
The success of quantum technologies is intimately connected to the possibility of using them in real-world applications. To this aim, we study the sensing capabilities of quantum SU(1,1) interferometers in the single-photon-pair regime and in the presence of losses, a situation highly relevant to practical realistic measurements of extremely photosensitive materials. We show that coincidence measurement can be exploited to partially mitigate the effect of losses inside the interferometer. Finally, we find that quantum SU(1,1) interferometers are capable of outperforming classical SU(2) systems…
For a squeezing-enhanced SU(2) interferometer, we theoretically investigate the possibility to broaden the phase range of sub-shot-noise sensitivity. We show that this goal can be achieved by implementing detection in both output ports, with the optimal combination of the detectors outputs, leading to a phase sensitivity independent of the interferometer operation point. Provided that each detector is preceded by a phase-sensitive amplifier, this sensitivity could be also tolerant to the detection loss.
A new scheme for generating amplitude squeezed light by means of soliton self-phase modulation is experimentally demonstrated. By injecting 180-fs pulses into an equivalent Mach-Zehnder fiber interferometer, a maximum noise reduction of $4.4 \pm 0.3$ dB is obtained ($6.3 \pm 0.6$ dB when corrected for losses). The dependence of noise reduction on the interferometer splitting ratio and fiber length is studied in detail.
High precision interferometers are the building blocks of precision metrology and the ultimate interferometric sensitivity is limited by the quantum noise. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a compact quantum interferometer involving two optical parametric amplifiers and the squeezed states generated within the interferometer are directly used for the phase-sensing quantum state. By both squeezing shot noise and amplifying phase-sensing intensity the sensitivity improvement of $4.86\pm 0.24$ dB beyond the standard quantum limit is deterministically realized and a minimum detectable…
We report on the generation of polarization squeezing of intense, short light pulses using an asymmetric fiber Sagnac interferometer. The Kerr nonlinearity of the fiber is exploited to produce independent amplitude squeezed pulses. The polarization squeezing properties of spatially overlapped amplitude squeezed and coherent states are discussed. The experimental results for a single amplitude squeezed beam are compared to the case of two phase-matched, spatially overlapped amplitude squeezed pulses. For the latter, noise variances of -3.4dB below shot noise in the S0 and the S1 and of -2.8dB i…
We study the phase sensitivity in the conventional $SU(2)$ and nonconventional $SU(1,1)$ interferometers with the coherent and squeezed vacuum input state via the quantum Cramer-Rao bound. We explicitly construct the detection scheme that gives the optimal phase sensitivity. For practical purposes, we show that in the presence of photon loss, both interferometers with proper homodyne detections, are nearly optimal. We also find that unlike the coherent state and squeezed vacuum state, the effects of the imperfect detector on the phase sensitivity cannot be asymptotically removed for a generic …

Measurement-induced nonclassical effects in a two-mode interferometer are investigated theoretically using numerical simulations and analytical results. We demonstrate that for certain parameters measurements within the interferometer lead to the occurrence of two-mode squeezing. The results strongly depend on the detection probability, the phase inside the interferometer, and the choice of the input states. The appropriate parameters for maximized squeezing are obtained. We analyze the influence of losses and confirm that the predicted effects are within reach of current experimental techniqu…
Twin-Signal-Recycling (TSR) builds on the resonance doublet of two optically coupled cavities and efficiently enhances the sensitivity of an interferometer at a dedicated signal frequency. We report on the first experimental realization of a Twin-Signal-Recycling Michelson interferometer and also its broadband enhancement by squeezed light injection. The complete setup was stably locked and a broadband quantum noise reduction of the interferometers shot noise by a factor of up to 4\,dB was demonstrated. The system was characterized by measuring its quantum noise spectra for several tunings of …
The sensitivity properties of an SU(1,1) interferometer made of two cascaded parametric amplifiers, as well as of an ordinary SU(2) interferometer preceded by a squeezer and followed by an anti-squeezer, are theoretically investigated. Several possible experimental configurations are considered, such as the absence or presence of a seed beam, direct or homodyne detection scheme. In all cases we formulate the optimal conditions to achieve phase super-sensitivity, meaning a sensitivity overcoming the shot-noise limit. We show that for a given gain of the first parametric amplifier, unbalancing t…
The greater confinement of light that is possible in photonic crystal fibres leads to a greater effective nonlin- earity, which promises to yield greater quantum squeezing than is possible in standard optical fibre. However, experimental work to date has not achieved improvements over standard fibre. We present a comprehensive numerical investigation of polarisation squeezing in photonic crystal fibre in a Sagnac configuration. By including loss, a non-instantaneous Raman response, excess phase-noise, second- and third-order dispersion and self-steepening, the simulations are able to identify …
We investigate theoretically the properties of squeezed states generated using degenerate parametric down conversion in lossy cavities. We show that the Lindblad master equation, which governs the evolution of this system, has as its solution a squeezed thermal state with an effective temperature and squeezing parameter that depends on time. We derive analytical solutions for the time-evolution of quadrature noise, thermal photon number, squeezing parameter, and total photon number under different pumping regimes. We also find the steady state limits of the quadrature noises and discuss the $ …
We carry out analysis of optomechanical system formed by moveable mirror of Fabry-Perot cavity pumped by detuned laser. Optical spring arising from detuned pump creates in the system several eigen modes which could be treated as high-Q oscillators. Modulation of laser power results in parametric modulation of oscillators spring constants thus allowing to squeeze noise in quadratures of the modes. Evidence of the squeezing could be found in the light reflected from the cavity.
We give a detailed discussion of optimal quantum states for optical two-mode interferometry in the presence of photon losses. We derive analytical formulae for the precision of phase estimation obtainable using quantum states of light with a definite photon number and prove that maximization of the precision is a convex optimization problem. The corresponding optimal precision, i.e. the lowest possible uncertainty, is shown to beat the standard quantum limit thus outperforming classical interferometry. Furthermore, we discuss more general inputs: states with indefinite photon number and states…
In this work, we discuss two phase-measurement methods for the Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) in the presence of internal losses and give the corresponding optimum conditions. We find theoretically that when the core parameters (reflectivities, phase difference) are optimized, the phase sensitivity of the two methods can reach a generalized bound on precision: standard interferometric limit (SIL). In the experiment, we design an MZI with adjustable beam splitting ratios and losses to verify phase sensitivity optimization. The sensitivity improvements at loss rates from 0.4 to 0.998 are demo…
Interferometers are crucial for precision measurements, including gravitational waves, laser ranging, radar, and imaging. The phase sensitivity, the core parameter, can be quantum-enhanced to break the standard quantum limit (SQL) using quantum states. However, quantum states are highly fragile and quickly degrade with losses. We design and demonstrate a quantum interferometer utilizing a beam splitter with a variable splitting ratio to protect the quantum resource against environmental impacts. The optimal phase sensitivity can reach the quantum Cramér-Rao bound of the system. This quantum in…
In this work we analyse the structure of highly-entangled multimode squeezed states, such as those generated by broadband pulses undergoing type-II parametric down-conversion (PDC). Such down-conversion has previously been touted as a natural and efficient means of cluster-state generation, and therefore a viable future pathway to quantum computation. We first detail how broadband PDC processes lead directly to a series of orthogonal supermodes that are linear combinations of the original frequency modes. We then calculate the total squeezing of the multimode entangled states when they are ass…
Interferometric gravitational wave detectors are expected to be limited by shot noise at some frequencies. We experimentally demonstrate that a power recycled Michelson with squeezed light injected into the dark port can overcome this limit. An improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio of 2.3dB is measured and locked stably for long periods of time. The configuration, control and signal readout of our experiment are compatible with current gravitational wave detector designs. We consider the application of our system to long baseline interferometer designs such as LIGO.

We show that squeezing is an irreducible resource which remains invariant under transformations by linear optical elements. In particular, we give a decomposition of any optical circuit with linear input-output relations into a linear multiport interferometer followed by a unique set of single mode squeezers and then another multiport interferometer. Using this decomposition we derive a no-go theorem for superpositions of macroscopically distinct states from single-photon detection. Further, we demonstrate the equivalence between several schemes for randomly creating polarization-entangled sta…
We analyze a fiber-optic gyroscope design enhanced by the injection of quantum-optical squeezed vacuum into a fiber-based Sagnac interferometer. In the presence of fiber loss, we compute the maximum attainable enhancement over a classical, laser-driven fiber-optic gyroscope in terms of the angular velocity estimate variance from a homodyne measurement. We find a constant enhancement factor that depends on the degree of squeezing introduced into the system but has diminishing returns beyond $10$--$15$ dB of squeezing. Under a realistic constraint of fixed total fiber length, we show that segmen…
We analyse the phase space representation of the optimal measurement of a phase shift in an interferometer with equal photon loss in both its arms. In the local phase estimation scenario with a fixed number of photons, we identify features of the spin Wigner function that warrant sub-shot noise precision, and discuss their sensitivity to losses. We derive the asymptotic form of an integral kernel describing the process of photon loss in the phase space in the limit of large photon numbers. The analytic form of this kernel allows one to assess the ultimate precision limit for a lossy interferom…
Spin squeezing is a form of entanglement that can improve the stability of quantum sensors operating with multiple particles, by inducing inter-particle correlations that redistribute the quantum projection noise. Previous analyses of potential metrological gain when using spin squeezing were performed on theoretically ideal states, without incorporating experimental imperfections or inherent limitations which result in non-unitary quantum state evolution. Here, we show that potential gains in clock stability are substantially reduced when the spin squeezing is non-unitary, and derive analytic…
We analyze the creation of spin squeezed atomic ensembles by simultaneous dispersive interactions with several optical frequencies. A judicious choice of optical parameters enables optimization of an interferometric detection scheme that suppresses inhomogeneous light shifts and keeps the interferometer operating in a balanced mode that minimizes technical noise. We show that when the atoms interact with two-frequency light tuned to cycling transitions the degree of spin squeezing $ξ^2$ scales as $ξ^2\sim 1/d$ where $d$ is the resonant optical depth of the ensemble. In real alkali atoms there …
Bragg interferometers, operating using pseudospin-1/2 systems composed of two momentum states, have become a mature technology for precision measurements. State-of-the-art Bragg interferometers are rapidly surpassing technical limitations and are soon expected to operate near the projection noise limit set by uncorrelated atoms. Despite the use of large numbers of atoms, their operation is governed by single-atom physics. Motivated by recent proposals and demonstrations of Raman gravimeters in cavities, we propose a scheme to squeeze directly on momentum states for surpassing the projection no…

Mach-Zehnder interferometer, a powerful tool for a wide variety of measurements, has been realized with Bose-Einstein condensates in recent experiments. In this report, we propose and analyze a realizable scheme for performing a Heisenberg-limited Mach-Zehnder interferometry with dipolar spin-1 condensate. Based upon adiabatic processes of sweeping the transverse magnetic field, we demonstrate a perfect phase transition, which accomplishes the beam splitter, phase shifter and recombiner as for a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The attractive dipolar interaction ensures the existence of a path-ent…
A Michelson-type interferometer with two-mode squeezed coherent state input is considered. Such an interferometer has a better phase sensitivity over the shot-noise limit by a factor of $e^{2r}$, where $r$ is the squeezing parameter [Phys. Rev. A 102,022614 (2020)]. We show that when photon loss and noise in the two arms is asymmetric an optimal choice of the squeezing angle can allow improvement in phase sensitivity without any increase in input or pump power. In particular, when loss occurs only in one arm of the interferometer, we can have improvement in phase sensitivity for photon loss up…
Broadband quantum noise reduction can be achieved in gravitational wave detectors by injecting frequency dependent squeezed light into the the dark port of the interferometer. This frequency dependent squeezing can be generated by combining squeezed light with external filter cavities. However, in future long baseline interferometers (LBIs), the filter cavity required to achieve the broadband squeezing has a low bandwidth -- necessitating a very long cavity to mitigate the issue from optical loss. It has been shown recently that by taking advantage of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) entanglement…
We study the effect of photothermal fluctuations on squeezed states of light through the photo-refractive effect and thermal expansion in a degenerate optical parametric amplifier (OPA). We also discuss the effect of the photothermal noise in various cases and how to minimize its undesirable consequences. We find that the photothermal noise in the OPA introduces a significant amount of noise on phase squeezed beams, making them less than ideal for low frequency applications such as gravitational wave (GW) interferometers, whereas amplitude squeezed beams are relatively immune to the phototherm…
Spin squeezing can improve atomic precision measurements beyond the standard quantum limit (SQL), and unitary spin squeezing is essential for improving atomic clocks. We report substantial and nearly unitary spin squeezing in $^{171}$Yb, an optical lattice clock atom. The collective nuclear spin of $\sim 10^3$ atoms is squeezed by cavity feedback, using light detuned from the system's resonances to attain unitarity. The observed precision gain over the SQL is limited by state readout to 6.5(4) dB, while the generated states offer a gain of 12.9(6) dB, limited by the curvature of the Bloch sphe…
We study the entanglement between the two beams exiting a Mach-Zehnder interferometer fed by a couple of squeezed-coherent states with arbitrary squeezing parameter. The quantum correlations at the output are function of the internal phase-shift of the interferometer, with the output state ranging from a totally disentangled state to a state whose degree of entanglement is an increasing function of the input squeezing parameter. A couple of squeezed vacuum at the input leads to maximum entangled state at the output. The fringes visibilities resulting from measuring the coincidence counting rat…
A major challenge in optical quantum processing is implementing large, stable interferometers. Here we propose a virtual, measurement-based interferometer that is programmed on the fly solely by the choice of homodyne measurement angles. The effects of finite squeezing are captured as uniform amplitude damping. We compare our proposal to existing (physical) interferometers and consider its performance for BosonSampling, which could demonstrate post-classical computational power in the near future. We prove its efficiency in time and squeezing (energy) in this setting.

Photonic Crystal Fibers can be tailored to increase the effective Kerr nonlinearity, while producing smaller amounts of excess noise compared to standard silicon fibers. Using these features of Photonic Crystal Fibers we create polarization squeezed states with increased purity compared to standard fiber squeezing experiments. Explicit we produce squeezed states in counter propagating pulses along the same fiber axis to achieve near identical dispersion properties. This enables the production of polarization squeezing through interference in a polarization type Sagnac interferometer. We observ…
We show how one can prepare and detect entanglement and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering between two distinguishable groups (modes) of atoms in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) atom interferometer. Our paper extends previous work that developed criteria for two-mode entanglement and EPR steering based on the reduced variances of two spins defined in a plane. Observation of planar spin squeezing will imply entanglement, and sufficient planar spin squeezing implies EPR steering, between the two groups of atoms. By using a two-mode dynamical model to describe BEC interferometry experiments,…
A unified tensor description of quadratic spin squeezing interactions is proposed, covering the single- and two-axis twisting as special cases of a general scheme. A closed set of equations of motion of the first moments and variances is derived in Gaussian approximation and their solutions are discussed from the prospect of fastest squeezing generation. It turns out that the optimum rate of squeezing generation is governed by the difference between the largest and the smallest eigenvalues of the twisting tensor. A cascaded optical interferometer with Kerr nonlinear media is proposed as one of…

We theoretically study the angular displacements estimation based on a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), in which two optical parametric amplifiers (PAs) are introduced into two arms of the standard MZI, respectively. The employment of PAs can both squeeze the shot noise and amplify the photon number inside the interferometer. When the unknown angular displacements are introduced to both arms, we derive the multiparameter quantum Cramér-Rao bound (QCRB) using the quantum Fisher information matrix approach, and the bound of angular displacements difference between the two arms is comp…
We demonstrate the applicability of the EPR entanglement squeezing scheme for enhancing the shot-noise-limited sensitivity of a detuned dual-recycled Michelson interferometers. In particular, this scheme is applied to the GEO\,600 interferometer. The effect of losses throughout the interferometer, arm length asymmetries, and imperfect separation of the signal and idler beams are considered.
