In this work, we report a pronounced light upconversion in few-layer transition metal dichalcogenides. Our joint theory-experiment study attributes the upconversion photoluminescence to a resonant exciton-exciton annihilation involving a pair of dark excitons with opposite momenta, followed by the spontaneous emission of upconverted bright excitons, which can have a high upconversion efficiency. Additionally, the upconversion photoluminescence is generic in MoS2, MoSe2, WS2, and WSe2, showing a high tuneability from green to ultraviolet light.
The photon upconversion based on sensitized triplet-triplet annihilation (sTTA-UC) is a spin-flip mechanism exploited to recover the energy of dark triplet states in conjugated systems. In this process a high-energy fluorescent singlet is created through the collision and fusion of two low-energy triplets belonging to different diffusing molecules. Its excellent yield in solution under low excitation intensity and non-coherent light highlighted the huge potential of sTTA-UC to provide a breakthrough in solar technologies. However, its diffusion-limited bi-molecular nature limits its efficiency…
A very promising approach to obtain efficient upconversion of light is the use of triplet-triplet annihilation of excitations in molecular systems. In real materials, besides upconversion, many other physical processes take place - fluorescence, non-radiative decay, annihilation, diffusion - and compete with upconversion. The main objective of this work is to design a proof of principle model that can be used to shed light on the relevance of the interaction between the different physical processes that take part in these kinds of systems. Ultimately, we want to establish general principles th…

Transitions metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are direct semiconductors in the atomic monolayer (ML) limit with fascinating optical and spin-valley properties. The strong optical absorption of up to 20 % for a single ML is governed by excitons, electron-hole pairs bound by Coulomb attraction. Excited exciton states in MoSe$_2$ and MoTe$_2$ monolayers have so far been elusive due to their low oscillator strength and strong inhomogeneous broadening. Here we show that encapsulation in hexagonal boron nitride results in emission line width of the A:1$s$ exciton below 1.5 meV and 3 meV in our MoSe$_2$ a…
Excitons, Coulomb bound electron-hole pairs, are composite bosons and their interactions in traditional semiconductors lead to condensation and light amplification. The much stronger Coulomb interaction in transition metal dichalcogenides such as WSe$_2$ monolayers combined with the presence of the valley degree of freedom is expected to provide new opportunities for controlling excitonic effects. But so far the bosonic character of exciton scattering processes remains largely unexplored in these two-dimensional (2D) materials. Here we show that scattering between B-excitons and A-excitons pre…
Photochemical upconversion is a promising way to boost the efficiency of solar cells using triplet exciton annihilation. Currently, predicting the performance of photochemical upconversion devices is challenging. We present an open source software package which takes experimental parameters as inputs and gives the figure of merit of an upconversion system, enabling theory-driven design of better solar energy devices. We incorporate the statistical distribution of triplet excitons between the sensitizer and the emitter. Using the dynamic quenching effect of the sensitizer on emitter triplet exc…
We quantitatively illustrate the fundamental limit that exciton-exciton annihilation (EEA) may impose to the light emission of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) materials. The EEA in TMDC monolayers shows dependence on the interaction with substrates as its rate increases from 0.1 cm2/s (0.05 cm2/s) to 0.3 cm2/s (0.1 cm2/s) with the substrates removed for WS2 (MoS2) monolayers. It turns to be the major pathway of exciton decay and dominates the luminescence efficiency when the exciton density is beyond 1010 cm-2 in suspended monolayers or 1011 cm-2 in supported monolayers. This …
Low power photon upconversion (UC) based on sensitized triplet-triplet annihilation (sTTA) is considered as the most promising upwards wavelength-shifting technique to enhance the light harvesting capability of solar devices by recovering the low-energy tail of the solar spectrum. Semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) with conjugated organic ligands have been proposed as broadband sensitizers for extending the light-harvesting capability of sTTA-UC molecular absorbers. Key to their functioning is efficient energy transfer (ET) from the NC to the triplet state of the ligands that sensitizes the trip…
We report a photoluminescence (PL) and transient reflection spectroscopy study of exciton dynamics in monolayer transition transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). PL saturation in monolayer MoSe2 occurs an excitation intensity more than two orders of magnitude lower than in monolayer MoS2. Transient reflection shows that the nonlinear exciton-exciton annihilation is the dominant exciton decay process in monolayer MoSe2 in contrast to the previously reported linear exciton decay in monolayer MoS2. In addition, the exciton lifetime in MoSe2, > 125 ps, is more than an order of magnitude longer t…
Impurities play an important role during recombination processes in semiconductors. Their important role is sharpened in atomically-thin transition-metal dichalcogenides whose two-dimensional character renders electrons and holes highly susceptible to localization caused by remote charged impurities. We study a multitude of phenomena that arise from the interaction of localized electrons with excitonic complexes. Emphasis is given to the amplification of the phonon-assisted recombination of biexcitons when it is mediated by localized electrons, showing that this mechanism can explain recent ph…
Exciton intervalley scattering, annihilation and relaxation dynamics, and diffusive transport in a monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides are central to the functionality of devices based on them. This motivated us to investigate these properties in exfoliated high-quality monolayer MoSe2 using heterodyned nonlinear four-wave-mixing transient grating spectroscopy. While free exciton excitations are found to be long-lived (~230 ps), an extremely fast intervalley scattering ( less than 120 fs) is observed leading to a negligible valley polarization, consistent with steady state photoluminesc…
Atomically thin layer transition metal dichalcogenides have been intensively investigated for their rich optical properties and potential applications in nano-electronics. In this work, we study the incoherent optical phonon and exciton population dynamics in monolayer WS2 by time-resolved spontaneous Raman scattering spectroscopy. Upon excitation of the exciton transition, both the Stokes and anti-Stokes optical phonon scattering strength exhibit a large reduction. Based on the detailed balance, the optical phonon population is retrieved, which shows an instant build-up and a relaxation lifet…
The presence of two spin-split valleys in monolayer (1L) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductors supports versatile exciton species classified by their spin and valley quantum numbers. While the spin-0 intravalley exciton, known as the "bright" exciton, is readily observable, other types of excitons, such as the spin-1 intravalley (spin-dark) and spin-0 intervalley (momentum-dark) excitons, are more difficult to access. Here we develop a waveguide coupled 1L tungsten diselenide (WSe2) device to probe these exciton species. In particular, TM coupling to the atomic layer's out-of-pl…
Strong Coulomb interaction in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides can facilitate nontrivial many-body effects among excitonic complexes. Many-body effects like exciton-exciton annihilation (EEA) have been widely explored in this material system. However, a similar effect for charged excitons (or trions), that is, trion-trion annihilation (TTA), is expected to be relatively suppressed due to repulsive like-charges, and has not been hitherto observed in such layered semiconductors. By a gate-dependent tuning of the spectral overlap between the trion and the charged biexciton through an "a…
We have investigated the exciton dynamics in transition metal dichalcogenide mono-layers using time-resolved photoluminescence experiments performed with optimized time-resolution. For MoSe2 monolayers, we measure $τ_{rad}=1.8\pm0.2$ ps that we interpret as the intrinsic radiative recombination time. Similar values are found for WSe2 mono-layers. Our detailed analysis suggests the following scenario: at low temperature (T $\leq$ 50 K), the exciton oscillator strength is so large that the entire light can be emitted before the time required for the establishment of a thermalized exciton distrib…
Transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures can host interlayer excitons (IXs), which consist of electrons and holes spatially separated in different layers. IXs possess permanent dipoles and have proven to offer a wealth of novel physics. We develop a discrete, random-walk model which includes annihilation and repulsion interactions among IXs. Using this model, we simulate the trapping of IXs in traps of different depths, densities, and shapes. Our results show that dipole-dipole interactions play an important role in regulating IX trapping. The effects of dipole interactions can be miti…
The spectral and spatiotemporal dynamics of photoluminescence in monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenide WSe$_2$ obtained by mechanical exfoliation on a Si/SiO$_2$ substrate is studied over a wide range of temperatures and excitation powers. It is shown that the dynamics is nonexponential and, for times $t$ exceeding $\sim$50 ps after the excitation pulse, is described by a dependence of the form $1/(t+t_0)$. Photoluminescence decay is accelerated with a decrease in temperature, as well as with a decrease in the energy of emitting states. It is shown that the observed dynamics cannot be …
Recent advances in emerging atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors with strong light-matter interactions and tunable optical properties provide novel approaches for realizing new material functionalities. Coupling two-dimensional semiconductors with all-dielectric resonant nanostructures represents an especially attractive opportunity for manipulating optical properties in both the near-field and far-field regimes. Here, by integrating single-layer WSe2 and titanium oxide (TiO2) dielectric metasurfaces with toroidal resonances, we realized robust exciton emission enhanc…
Most optoelectronic devices operate at high photocarrier densities, where all semiconductors suffer from enhanced nonradiative recombination. Nonradiative processes proportionately reduce photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY), a performance metric that directly dictates the maximum device efficiency. Although transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers exhibit near-unity PL QY at low exciton densities, nonradiative exciton-exciton annihilation (EEA) enhanced by van-Hove singularity (VHS) rapidly degrades their PL QY at high exciton densities and limits their utility in practical appl…
Atomically thin two-dimensional crystals have revolutionized materials science. In particular, monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides promise novel optoelectronic applications, due to their direct energy gaps in the optical range. Their electronic and optical properties, however, are complicated by exotic room-temperature excitons, whose fundamental structure and dynamics has been under intense investigation. While interband spectroscopy probes energies of excitons with vanishing centre-of-mass momenta, the majority of excitons has remained elusive, raising questions about their unusual in…
