A quad-pixel (QP) sensor is increasingly integrated into commercial mobile cameras. The QP sensor has a unit of 2$\times$2 four photodiodes under a single microlens, generating multi-directional phase shifting when out-focus blurs occur. Similar to a dual-pixel (DP) sensor, the phase shifting can be regarded as stereo disparity and utilized for depth estimation. Based on this, we propose a QP disparity estimation network (QPDNet), which exploits abundant QP information by fusing vertical and horizontal stereo-matching correlations for effective disparity estimation. We also present a synthetic pipeline to generate a training dataset from an existing RGB-Depth dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that our QPDNet outperforms state-of-the-art stereo and DP methods. Our code and synthetic dataset are available at https://github.com/Zhuofeng-Wu/QPDNet.

Stereo camera systems play an important role in robotics applications to perceive the 3D world. However, conventional cameras have drawbacks such as low dynamic range, motion blur and latency due to the underlying frame-based mechanism. Event cameras address these limitations as they report the brightness changes of each pixel independently with a fine temporal resolution, but they are unable to acquire absolute intensity information directly. Although integrated hybrid event-frame sensors (eg., DAVIS) are available, the quality of data is compromised by coupling at the pixel level in the circ…
Exploiting light field data makes it possible to obtain dense and accurate depth map. However, synthetic scenes with limited disparity range cannot contain the diversity of real scenes. By training in synthetic data, current learning-based methods do not perform well in real scenes. In this paper, we propose a self-supervised learning framework for light field depth estimation. Different from the existing end-to-end training methods using disparity label per pixel, our approach implements network training by estimating EPI disparity shift after refocusing, which extends the disparity range of …
Monocular depth estimation has been extensively explored based on deep learning, yet its accuracy and generalization ability still lag far behind the stereo-based methods. To tackle this, a few recent studies have proposed to supervise the monocular depth estimation network by distilling disparity maps as proxy ground-truths. However, these studies naively distill the stereo knowledge without considering the comparative advantages of stereo-based and monocular depth estimation methods. In this paper, we propose to selectively distill the disparity maps for more reliable proxy supervision. Spec…

Pothole detection is one of the most important tasks for road maintenance. Computer vision approaches are generally based on either 2D road image analysis or 3D road surface modeling. However, these two categories are always used independently. Furthermore, the pothole detection accuracy is still far from satisfactory. Therefore, in this paper, we present a robust pothole detection algorithm that is both accurate and computationally efficient. A dense disparity map is first transformed to better distinguish between damaged and undamaged road areas. To achieve greater disparity transformation e…

In this paper, we have proposed a novel method for stereo disparity estimation by combining the existing methods of block based and region based stereo matching. Our method can generate dense disparity maps from disparity measurements of only 18% pixels of either the left or the right image of a stereo image pair. It works by segmenting the lightness values of image pixels using a fast implementation of K-Means clustering. It then refines those segment boundaries by morphological filtering and connected components analysis, thus removing a lot of redundant boundary pixels. This is followed by …

The dual-pixel (DP) hardware works by splitting each pixel in half and creating an image pair in a single snapshot. Several works estimate depth/inverse depth by treating the DP pair as a stereo pair. However, dual-pixel disparity only occurs in image regions with the defocus blur. The heavy defocus blur in DP pairs affects the performance of matching-based depth estimation approaches. Instead of removing the blur effect blindly, we study the formation of the DP pair which links the blur and the depth information. In this paper, we propose a mathematical DP model which can benefit depth estima…
We introduce a new stereo formulation which does not use pixel and disparity models. Many problems in vision are treated as assigning each pixel a label. Disparities are labels for stereo. Such pixel-labeling problems are naturally represented in terms of energy minimization, where the energy function has two terms: one term penalizes solutions that inconsistent with the observed data, the other term enforces spatial smoothness. Graph cuts are one of the effi- cient methods for solving energy minimization. However, exact minimization of multi labeling problems can be performed by graph cuts on…
Stereo depth estimation relies on optimal correspondence matching between pixels on epipolar lines in the left and right images to infer depth. In this work, we revisit the problem from a sequence-to-sequence correspondence perspective to replace cost volume construction with dense pixel matching using position information and attention. This approach, named STereo TRansformer (STTR), has several advantages: It 1) relaxes the limitation of a fixed disparity range, 2) identifies occluded regions and provides confidence estimates, and 3) imposes uniqueness constraints during the matching process…
Light field cameras record not only the spatial information of observed scenes but also the directions of all incoming light rays. The spatial and angular information implicitly contain geometrical characteristics such as multi-view or epipolar geometry, which can be exploited to improve the performance of depth estimation. An Epipolar Plane Image (EPI), the unique 2D spatial-angular slice of the light field, contains patterns of oriented lines. The slope of these lines is associated with the disparity. Benefiting from this property of EPIs, some representative methods estimate depth maps by a…
Most of stereo vision works are focusing on computing the dense pixel disparity of a given pair of left and right images. A camera pair usually required lens undistortion and stereo calibration to provide an undistorted epipolar line calibrated image pair for accurate dense pixel disparity computation. Due to noise, object occlusion, repetitive or lack of texture and limitation of matching algorithms, the pixel disparity accuracy usually suffers the most at those object boundary areas. Although statistically the total number of pixel disparity errors might be low (under 2% according to the Kit…

This work presents dense stereo reconstruction using high-resolution images for infrastructure inspections. The state-of-the-art stereo reconstruction methods, both learning and non-learning ones, consume too much computational resource on high-resolution data. Recent learning-based methods achieve top ranks on most benchmarks. However, they suffer from the generalization issue due to lack of task-specific training data. We propose to use a less resource demanding non-learning method, guided by a learning-based model, to handle high-resolution images and achieve accurate stereo reconstruction.…

This paper presents a stereo object matching method that exploits both 2D contextual information from images as well as 3D object-level information. Unlike existing stereo matching methods that exclusively focus on the pixel-level correspondence between stereo images within a volumetric space (i.e., cost volume), we exploit this volumetric structure in a different manner. The cost volume explicitly encompasses 3D information along its disparity axis, therefore it is a privileged structure that can encapsulate the 3D contextual information from objects. However, it is not straightforward since …

A major focus of recent developments in stereo vision has been on how to obtain accurate dense disparity maps in passive stereo vision. Active vision systems enable more accurate estimations of dense disparity compared to passive stereo. However, subpixel-accurate disparity estimation remains an open problem that has received little attention. In this paper, we propose a new learning strategy to train neural networks to estimate high-quality subpixel disparity maps for semi-dense active stereo vision. The key insight is that neural networks can double their accuracy if they are able to jointly…

Deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN) have recently shown promising results in low-level computer vision problems such as optical flow and disparity estimation, but still, have much room to further improve their performance. In this paper, we propose a novel sub-pixel convolution-based encoder-decoder network for optical flow and disparity estimations, which can extend FlowNetS and DispNet by replacing the deconvolution layers with sup-pixel convolution blocks. By using sub-pixel refinement and estimation on the decoder stages instead of deconvolution, we can significantly improve the esti…
We present an algorithm to estimate fast and accurate depth maps from light fields via a sparse set of depth edges and gradients. Our proposed approach is based around the idea that true depth edges are more sensitive than texture edges to local constraints, and so they can be reliably disambiguated through a bidirectional diffusion process. First, we use epipolar-plane images to estimate sub-pixel disparity at a sparse set of pixels. To find sparse points efficiently, we propose an entropy-based refinement approach to a line estimate from a limited set of oriented filter banks. Next, to estim…

In this paper we address the benefit of adding adversarial training to the task of monocular depth estimation. A model can be trained in a self-supervised setting on stereo pairs of images, where depth (disparities) are an intermediate result in a right-to-left image reconstruction pipeline. For the quality of the image reconstruction and disparity prediction, a combination of different losses is used, including L1 image reconstruction losses and left-right disparity smoothness. These are local pixel-wise losses, while depth prediction requires global consistency. Therefore, we extend the self…

Estimating the distance to objects is crucial for autonomous vehicles when using depth sensors is not possible. In this case, the distance has to be estimated from on-board mounted RGB cameras, which is a complex task especially in environments such as natural outdoor landscapes. In this paper, we present a new method named M4Depth for depth estimation. First, we establish a bijective relationship between depth and the visual disparity of two consecutive frames and show how to exploit it to perform motion-invariant pixel-wise depth estimation. Then, we detail M4Depth which is based on a pyrami…

Existing learning-based multi-view stereo (MVS) methods rely on the depth range to build the 3D cost volume and may fail when the range is too large or unreliable. To address this problem, we propose a disparity-based MVS method based on the epipolar disparity flow (E-flow), called DispMVS, which infers the depth information from the pixel movement between two views. The core of DispMVS is to construct a 2D cost volume on the image plane along the epipolar line between each pair (between the reference image and several source images) for pixel matching and fuse uncountable depths triangulated …

Learning-based stereo matching has recently achieved promising results, yet still suffers difficulties in establishing reliable matches in weakly matchable regions that are textureless, non-Lambertian, or occluded. In this paper, we address this challenge by proposing a stereo matching network that considers pixel-wise matchability. Specifically, the network jointly regresses disparity and matchability maps from 3D probability volume through expectation and entropy operations. Next, a learned attenuation is applied as the robust loss function to alleviate the influence of weakly matchable pixe…

This paper presents a learning-based approach to synthesize the view from an arbitrary camera position given a sparse set of images. A key challenge for this novel view synthesis arises from the reconstruction process, when the views from different input images may not be consistent due to obstruction in the light path. We overcome this by jointly modeling the epipolar property and occlusion in designing a convolutional neural network. We start by defining and computing the aperture disparity map, which approximates the parallax and measures the pixel-wise shift between two views. While this r…
In this work, we propose a novel event based stereo method which addresses the problem of motion blur for a moving event camera. Our method uses the velocity of the camera and a range of disparities to synchronize the positions of the events, as if they were captured at a single point in time. We represent these events using a pair of novel time synchronized event disparity volumes, which we show remove motion blur for pixels at the correct disparity in the volume, while further blurring pixels at the wrong disparity. We then apply a novel matching cost over these time synchronized event dispa…

Stereo matching is crucial for binocular stereo vision. Existing methods mainly focus on simple disparity map fusion to improve stereo matching, which require multiple dense or sparse disparity maps. In this paper, we propose a simple yet novel scheme, termed feature disparity propagation, to improve general stereo matching based on matching cost volume and sparse matching feature points. Specifically, our scheme first calculates a reliable sparse disparity map by local feature matching, and then refines the disparity map by propagating reliable disparities to neighboring pixels in the matchin…
Stereo cameras are a popular choice for obstacle avoidance for outdoor lighweight, low-cost robotics applications. However, they are unable to sense thin and reflective objects well. Currently, many algorithms are tuned to perform well on indoor scenes like the Middlebury dataset. When navigating outdoors, reflective objects, like windows and glass, and thin obstacles, like wires, are not well handled by most stereo disparity algorithms. Reflections, repeating patterns and objects parallel to the cameras' baseline causes mismatches between image pairs which leads to bad disparity estimates. Th…

A warping strategy is embedded in our framework for tackling the large displacement problem. We also show that by applying a simple regularization term and a guided median filtering, the accuracy of displacem…
This paper presents StereoNet, the first end-to-end deep architecture for real-time stereo matching that runs at 60 fps on an NVidia Titan X, producing high-quality, edge-preserved, quantization-free disparity maps. A key insight of this paper is that the network achieves a sub-pixel matching precision than is a magnitude higher than those of traditional stereo matching approaches. This allows us to achieve real-time performance by using a very low resolution cost volume that encodes all the information needed to achieve high disparity precision. Spatial precision is achieved by employing a le…

Leveraging the disparity information from both left and right views is crucial for stereo disparity estimation. However, the conventional left-right consistency check is an isolated post-processing step and heavily hand-crafted. This paper proposes a novel left-right comparative recurrent model to perform left-right consistency checking jointly with disparity estimation. At each recurrent step, the model produces disparity results for both views, and then…
