Being intrinsically nonequilibrium, active materials can potentially perform functions that would be thermodynamically forbidden in passive materials. However, active systems have diverse local attractors that correspond to distinct dynamical states, many of which exhibit chaotic turbulent-like dynamics and thus cannot perform work or useful functions. Designing such a system to choose a specific dynamical state is a formidable challenge. Motivated by recent advances enabling opto-genetic control of experimental active materials, we describe an optimal control theory framework that identifies a spatiotemporal sequence of light-generated activity that drives an active nematic system toward a prescribed dynamical steady-state. Active nematics are unstable to spontaneous defect proliferation and chaotic streaming dynamics in the absence of control. We demonstrate that optimal control theory can compute activity fields that redirect the dynamics into a variety of alternative dynamical programs and functions. This includes dynamically reconfiguring between states, and selecting and stabilizing emergent behaviors that do not correspond to attractors, and are hence unstable in the uncontrolled system. Our results provide a roadmap to leverage optical control methods to rationally design structure, dynamics, and function in a wide variety of active materials.
We consider textures of biaxial nematics confined between two parallel plates. The boundary conformations at the bordering plates are supposed to be identical, the gradients of the order parameter being generally nonzero. We claim that for any texture (including stable uniform order parameter alignment) there exists its counterpart texture which is also a minimum of the gradient elastic energy. Our arguments are based on the topological analysis of the conformation of the order parameter.
We explore a novel strategy of patterning nematic elastomers that does not require inscribing the texture directly. It is based on varying the dopant concentration that, beside shifting the phase transition point, affects the nematic director field via coupling between the gradients of concentration and nematic order parameter. Rotation of the director around a point dopant source causes topological modification manifesting itself in a change of the number of defects. A variety of shapes, dependent on the dopant distribution, are obtained by anisotropic deformation following the nematic--isotr…
We present a polarising optical microscopy study of a liquid-crystal mixture of trans-4-hexylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid (C6) and benzoic acid. Both materials have carboxylic groups that can form dimers through hydrogen bonding. The mixture is nematic and room temperature and has the clearing point at 88 Celsius. The nematic phase shows ringed spherulites, sometimes looking like spiral structures, and undulated textures, which remain visible heating the sample till 71 Celsius. This is the temperature of a texture transition inside the nematic phase.
An elastic membrane with embedded nematic molecules is considered as a model of anisotropic fluid membrane with internal ordering. By considering the geometric coupling between director field and membrane curvature, the nematic texture is shown to induce anisotropic stresses additional to Canham-Helfrich elasticity. Building upon differential geometry, analytical expressions are found for the membrane stress and torque induced by splaying, twisting and bending of the nematic director as described by the Frank energy of liquid crystals. The forces induced by prototypical nematic textures are vi…
We demonstrate that a first order isotropic-to-nematic phase transition in liquid crystals can be succesfully modeled within the generalized Landau-de Gennes theory by selecting an appropriate combination of elastic constants. The numerical simulations of the model established in this paper qualitatively reproduce the experimentally observed configurations that include interfaces and topological defects in the nematic phase.
Textures (i.e., smooth space non-uniform distributions of the order parameter) in biaxial nematics turned out to be much more difficult and interesting than expected. Scanning the literature we find only a very few publications on this topic. Thus, the immediate motivation of the present paper is to develop a systematic procedure to study, classify and visualize possible textures in biaxial nematics. Based on the elastic energy of a biaxial nematic (written in the most simple form that involves the least number of phenomenological parameters) we derive and solve numerically the Lagrange equati…
Directional media, such as nematic liquid crystals and ferromagnets, are characterized by their topologically stabilized defects in directional order. In nematics, boundary conditions and surface-treated inclusions often create complex structures, which are difficult to classify. Topological charge of point defects in nematics has ambiguously defined sign and its additivity cannot be ensured when defects are observed separately. We demonstrate how the topological charge of complex defect structures can be determined by identifying and counting parts of the texture that satisfy simple geometric…
Recently we have observed in compounds of the 4,n-alkyloxybenzoic acid series, with the homologous index n ranging from 6 to 9, a texture transition in the nematic range which subdivides the nematic phase in two sub-phases displaying different textures in polarised light analysis. To investigate a persistence of texture transitions in nematic phases, we prepared binary mixtures of 4,6-alkyloxybenzoic acid (6OBAC) with other members (7-,8-,9-,12-, 16OBAC) of its homologous series. Binary mixtures exhibit a broadening in the temperature ranges of both smectic and nematic phases. A nematic temper…
Two nematic shells brought in contact coalesce in order to reduce their interfacial tension. This process proceeds through the creation of a liquid neck-like bridge through which the encapsulated fluid flows. Following this topological transition, We study the defect textures as the combined shell shape evolves. Varying the sizes of the shells, we perform a quasistatic investigation of the director field and the defect valence on the doublet. Regimes are found where positive and negative defects exist due to the large negative Gaussian curvature at the neck. Using large scale computer simulati…
When a family of non symmetrical heterocycled compounds is investigated, a variety of mesophases can be observed with rather different features. Here we report the behaviour of seven different members among a family of such materials, that consists of mesomorphic oxadiazole compounds. In two of these compounds, the optical microscope investigation shows very interesting behaviours. In their smectic phases, fan-shaped and toric textures, sometimes with periodic instability, are observed. Moreover, the nematic phase displays a texture transition. Texture transitions have been previously observed…
Much recent progress has been made in the study of nematic solids, both glassy and elastomeric, particularly in the realm of stress-free, defect-driven deformation in thin sheets of material. In this paper we consider a subset of texture domains in nematic glasses that are simple to synthesize, and explore the ways that these simple domains may be compatibly combined to yield analogs of the traditional smooth disclination defect textures seen in standard liquid crystals. We calculate the deformation properties of these constructed textures, and show that, subject to the compatibility constrain…
The equilibrium texture of nematic shells is studied as a function of their thickness. For ultrathin shells the ground state has four short 1/2 disclination lines but, as the thickness of the film increases, a three dimensional escaped configuration composed of two pairs of half-hedgehogs becomes energetically favorable. We derive an exact solution for the nematic ground state in the one Frank constant approximation and study the stability of the corresponding texture against thermal fluctuations.
The emergence of new techniques for the fabrication of nematic droplets with nontrivial topology provides new routes for the assembly of responsive devices. Here we perform a numerical study of spherical nematic droplets on fibres. We analyse the equilibrium textures and find that, under certain conditions, the nematic can avoid the nucleation of topological defects. We consider in detail a homeotropic nematic droplet wrapped around a fibre with planar anchoring. We investigate the effect of an electric field on the texture of this droplet such type of system. In the presence of a DC field, the…
The 4,n-alkyloxybenzoic acid 6OBAC has a very rich variety of crystalline structures and two nematic sub-phases, characterised by different textures. It is a material belonging to a family of liquid crystals formed by hydrogen bonded molecules, the 4,n-alkyloxybenzoic acids indicates the homologue number). The homologues with n ranging from 7 to 13 display both smectic C and N phases. In spite of the absence of a smectic phase, 6OBAC exhibits two sub-phases with different textures, as it happens in other materials of the homologue series which possess the smectic phase. This is the first mater…
We present a generalized approach to compute the shape and internal structure of two-dimensional nematic domains. By using conformal mappings, we are able to compute the director field for a given domain shape that we choose from a rich class, which includes drops with large and small aspect ratios, and sharp domain tips as well as smooth ones. Results are assembled in a phase diagram that for given domain size, surface tension, anchoring strength, and elastic constant shows the transitions from a homogeneous to a bipolar director field, from circular to elongated droplets, and from sharp to s…
We consider the effects of the coupling between the orientational order of the two monolayers in flat nematic bilayers. We show that the presence of a topological defect on one bilayer generates a nontrivial orientational texture on both monolayers. Therefore, one cannot consider isolated defects on one monolayer, but rather associated pairs of defects on either monolayer, which we call bi-defects. Bi-defects generally produce walls, such that the textures of the two monolayers are identical outside the walls, and different in their interior. We suggest some experimental conditions in which th…
The Hopf fibration is an example of a texture: a topologically stable, smooth, global configuration of a field. Here we demonstrate the controlled sculpting of the Hopf fibration in nematic liquid crystals through the control of point defects. We demonstrate how these are related to torons by use of a topological visualization technique derived from the Pontryagin-Thom construction.
A systematic analysis of defect textures in facetted nanoparticles with polygonal configurations embedded in a nematic matrix is performed using the Landau-de Gennes model, homeotropic strong anchoring in a square domain with uniform alignment in the outer boundaries. Defect and textures are analyzed as functions of temperature T, polygon size R, and polygon number N. For nematic nanocomposites, the texture satisfies a defect charge balance equation between bulk and surface (particle corner) charges. Upon decreasing the temperature, the central bulk defects split and together with other -1/2 b…
Dynamic simulations of the isotropic-nematic phase transformation of liquid crystal droplets under homeotropic anchoring are found to predict chiral symmetry-breaking dynamics. These observations occur when using material parameters for pentyl-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) but not under the single elastic constant approximation of this material, frequently used in simulation. The twisting dynamic process occurs during the relaxation of the domain from an unstable radial texture to a stable uniform texture and involves simultaneous defect loop motion and twisting of the bulk nematic texture.
Two-dimensional nematics possess peculiar properties that have been studied recently using computer simulation and various theoretical models. Here we review our own contribution to the field using density-functional theory, and present some preliminary simulation results on confined two-dimensional nematics. First we discuss the possible stable bulk phases and phase diagrams and the relation between phases and particle geometry. We then explore the adsorption properties on a single substrate and the confinement effects that arise when the fluid is confined between parallel walls. Next, confin…
Substrates which are chemically or topographically patterned induce a variety of liquid crystal textures. The response of the liquid crystal to competing surface orientations, typical of patterned substrates, is determined by the anisotropy of the elastic constants and the interplay of the relevant lengths scales, such as the correlation length and the surface geometrical parameters. Transitions between different textures, usually with different symmetries, may occur under a wide range of conditions. We use the Landau-de Gennes free energy to investigate the texture of nematics in sinusoidal c…
Knotted line defects in continuous fields entrain a complex arrangement of the material sur- rounding them. Recent experimental realisations in optics, fluids and nematic liquid crystals make it important to fully characterise these textures and to understand how their properties relate to the knot type. We characterise knotted nematics through an application of classical knot theory founded upon the Pontryagin-Thom construction for nematic textures and give explicit closed form constructions for knots possessing Milnor fibrations with general boundary conditions. For links we construct nemati…
We perform energy spectrum analysis of the active turbulence in 3D bulk active nematic using continuum numerical modelling. Specifically, we calculate the spectra of two main energy contributions---kinetic energy and nematic elastic energy---and combine this with the geometrical analysis of the nematic order and flow fields, based on direct defect tracking and calculation of autocorrelations. We show that the active nematic elastic energy is concentrated at scales corresponding to the effective defect-to-defect separation, scaling with activity as $\simζ^{0.5}$, whereas the kinetic energy is l…
Within the framework of Landau-de Gennes theory for nematic liquid crystals, we study the temperature-induced isotropic-nematic phase transition on a spherical shell. Below a critical temperature, a thin layer of nematic coating a microscopic spherical particle exhibits non-uniform textures due to the geometrical frustration. We find the exact value of critical threshold for the temperature and determine exactly the nematic textures at the transition by means of a weakly nonlinear analysis. The critical temperature is affected by the extrinsic curvature of the sphere, and the nematic alignment…
Motivated by recent experiments on the rod-like virus bacteriophage fd, confined to circular and annular domains, we present a theoretical study of structural transitions in these geometries. Using the continuum theory of nematic liquid crystals, we examine the competition between bulk elasticity and surface anchoring, mediated by the formation of topological defects. We show analytically that bulk defects are unstable with respect to defects sitting at the boundary. Moreover, in case of an annulus, whose topology does not require the presence of topological defects, under weak anchoring condi…
We investigate isotropic-isotropic, isotropic-nematic and nematic-nematic phase coexistence in binary mixtures of circular platelets with vanishing thickness, continuous rotational degrees of freedom and radial size ratios $λ$ up to 5. A fundamental measure density functional theory, previously used for the one-component model, is proposed and results are compared against those from Onsager theory as a benchmark. For $λ\leq 1.7$ the system displays isotropic-nematic phase coexistence with a widening of the biphasic region for increasing values of $λ$. For size ratios $λ\geq 2$, we find demixin…
We present magneto-optic measurements on two materials that form the recently discovered twist-bend nematic (Ntb) phase. This intriguing state of matter represents a new fluid phase that is orientationally anisotropic in three directions and also exhibits translational order with periodicity several times larger than the molecular size. NTB materials may also spontaneously form a visible, macroscopic stripe texture. We show that the optical stripe texture can be persistently inhibited by a magnetic field, and a 25T external magnetic field depresses the N-Ntb phase transition temperature by alm…
We propose an extension of Frank-Oseen's elastic energy for bulk nematic liquid crystals which is based on the hypothesis that the fundamental deformations allowed in nematic liquid crystals are splay, twist and bend. The extended elastic energy is a fourth order form in the fundamental deformations. The existence of bulk spontaneous modulated or deformed nematic liquid crystal ground states is investigated. The analysis is limited to bulk nematic liquid crystals in the absence of limiting surfaces and/or external fields. The non deformed ground state is stable only when Frank-Oseen's elastic …
Recent experiments and numerical studies have drawn attention to the dynamics of active nematics. Two-dimensional active nematics flow spontaneously and exhibit spatiotemporal chaotic flows with proliferation of topological defects in the nematic texture. It has been proposed that the dynamics of active nematics can be understood in terms of the dynamics of interacting defects, propelled by active stress. Previous work has derived effective equations of motion for individual defects as quasi-particles moving in the mean field generated by other defects, but an effective theory governing multi-…
Topological spin and polar textures have fascinated people in different areas of physics and technologies. However, the observations are limited in magnetic and solid-state ferroelectric systems. Ferroelectric nematic is the first liquid-state ferroelectric that would carry many possibilities of spatially distributed polarization fields. Contrary to traditional magnetic or crystalline systems, anisotropic liquid crystal interactions can compete with the polarization counterparts, thereby setting a challenge in understating their interplays and the resultant topologies. Here, we discover chiral…
Stabilizing defects in liquid-crystal systems is crucial for many physical processes and applications ranging from functionalizing liquid-crystal textures to recently reported command of chaotic behaviors of active matters. In this work, we perform analytical calculations to study the curvature driven stability mechanism of defects based on the isotropic nematic disk model that is free of any topological constraint. We show that in a growing spherical disk covering a sphere the accumulation of curvature effect can prevent typical +1 and +1/2 defects from forming boojum textures where the defec…
Using a geometry-based fundamental measure density functional theory, we calculate bulk fluid phase diagrams of colloidal mixtures of vanishingly thin hard circular platelets and hard spheres. We find isotropic-nematic phase separation with strong broadening of the biphasic region upon increasing the pressure. In mixtures with large size ratio of platelet and sphere diameter, there is also demixing between two nematic phases with differing platelet concentrations. We formulate a fundamental-measure density functional for mixtures of colloidal platelets and freely overlapping spheres, which rep…
A two-dimensional or quasi-two-dimensional nematic liquid crystal refers to a surface confined system. When such a system is further confined by external line boundaries or excluded from internal line boundaries, the nematic directors form a deformed texture that may display defect points or defect lines, for which winding numbers can be clearly defined. Here, a particular attention is paid to the case when the liquid crystal molecules prefer to form a boundary nematic texture in parallel to the wall surface (i.e., following the homogeneous boundary condition). A general theory, based on geome…
We present a numerical method, based on a tensor order parameter description of a nematic phase, that allows fully anisotropic elasticity. Our method thus extends the Landau-de Gennes $\mathbf{Q}$-tensor theory to anisotropic phases. A microscopic model of the nematogen is introduced (the Maier-Saupe potential in the case discussed in this paper), combined with a constraint on eigenvalue bounds of $\mathbf{Q}$. This ensures a physically valid order parameter $\mathbf{Q}$ (i.e., the eigenvalue bounds are maintained), while allowing for more general gradient energy densities that can include cub…
We perform optical, surface anchoring, and textural studies of an organo-siloxane tetrapode material in the broad temperature range of the nematic phase. The optical, structural, and topological features are compatible with the uniaxial nematic order rather than with the biaxial nematic order, in the entire nematic temperature range -25C < T < 46C studied. For homeotropic alignment, the material experiences surface anchoring transition, but the director can be realigned into an optically uniaxial texture by applying a sufficiently strong electric field. The topological features of textures in …
An analogy is pointed out between a polymer chain fluctuating in a two-dimensional nematic background and a freely floating material line buffeted by a two-dimensional turbulent fluid in the inertial (Kraichnan) regime. Under certain conditions, the back-reaction of the line on the turbulent flow may be neglected. The fractal exponent related to the size-contour relation of the material line is connected to a "nematic" correlation function in the bulk.
By means of a molecular model, we examine hybrid nematic films with antagonistic anchoring angles where one of the surfaces is in the strong anchoring regime. If anchoring at the other surface is weak, and in the absence of wetting by the isotropic phase, the anchoring transition may interact with the capillary isotropic-nematic transition in interesting ways. For general anchoring conditions on this surface we confirm the existence of the step-tilt, biaxial phase and the associated transition to the linear, constant-tilt-rotation, configuration. The step-like phase is connected with the bulk …
In this paper we investigate the dynamics of liquid crystal textures in a two-dimensional nematic under applied electric fields, using numerical simulations performed using a publicly available LIquid CRystal Algorithm (LICRA) developed by the authors. We consider both positive and negative dielectric anisotropies and two different possibilities for the orientation of the electric field (parallel and perpendicular to the two-dimensional lattice). We determine the effect of an applied electric field pulse on the evolution of the characteristic length scale and other properties of the liquid cry…

The occurrence of new textures of liquid crystals is an important factor in tuning their optical and photonics properties. Here, we show, both experimentally and by numerical computation, that under an electric field chitin tactoids (i.e. nematic droplets) can stretch to aspect ratios of more than 15, leading to a transition from a spindle-like to a cigar-like shape. We argue that the large extensions occur because the elastic contribution to the free energy is dominated by the anchoring. We demonstrate that the elongation involves hydrodynamic flow and is reversible, the tactoids return to th…
We exploit the long-ranged elastic fields inherent to confined nematic liquid crystals to assemble colloidal particles trapped at the liquid crystal interface into reconfigurable structures with complex symmetries and packings. Spherical colloids with homeotropic anchoring trapped at the interface between air and the nematic liquid crystal 5CB create quadrupolar distortions in the director field causing particles to repel and consequently form close-packed assemblies with a triangular habit. Here we report on complex, open structures organized via interactions with defects in the bulk. Specifi…
Morphodynamic equations governing the behaviour of active nematic fluids on deformable curved surfaces are constructed in the large deformation limit. Emphasis is placed on the formulation of objective rates that account for normal deformations whilst ensuring that tangential flows are Eulerian, and the use of the surface derivative (rather than the covariant derivative) in the nematic free energy, which elastically couples local order to out-of-plane bending of the surface. Focusing on surface geometry and its dynamical interplay with the hydrodynamics, several illustrative instabilities are …
We give the global homotopy classification of nematic textures for a general domain with weak anchoring boundary conditions and arbitrary defect set in terms of twisted cohomology, and give an explicit computation for the case of knotted and linked defects in $\mathbb{R}^3$, showing that the distinct homotopy classes have a 1-1 correspondence with the first homology group of the branched double cover, branched over the disclination loops. We show further that the subset of those classes corresponding to elements of order 2 in this group have representatives that are planar and characterise the…
Nematic liquid crystals possess three different phases: isotropic, uniaxial, and biaxial. The ground state of most nematics is either isotropic or uniaxial, depending on the external temperature. Nevertheless, biaxial domains have been frequently identified, especially close to defects or external surfaces. In this paper we show that any spatially-varying director pattern may be a source of biaxiality. We prove that biaxiality arises naturally whenever the symmetric tensor $\Sb=(\grad \nn)(\grad \nn)^T$ possesses two distinct nonzero eigenvalues. The eigenvalue difference may be used as a meas…
Field-induced reorientation of colloidal particles is especially relevant to manipulate the optical properties of a nanomaterial for target applications. We have recently shown that surprisingly feeble external stimuli are able to transform uniaxial nematic liquid crystals (LCs) of cuboidal particles into biaxial nematic LCs. In the light of these results, here we apply an external field that forces the reorientation of colloidal cuboids in nematic LCs and sparks a uniaxial-to-biaxial texture switching. By Dynamic Monte Carlo simulation, we investigate the unsteady-state reorientation dynamics…
We study numerically the rheological properties of a slab of active gel close o the isotropic-nematic transition. The flow behavior shows strong dependence on sample size, boundary conditions, and on the bulk constitutive curve, which, on entering the nematic phase, acquires an activity-induced discontinuity at the origin. The precursor of this within the metastable isotropic phase for contractile systems ({\em e.g.,} actomyosin gels) gives a viscosity divergence; its counterpart for extensile ({\em e.g.,} {\em B. subtilis}) suspensions admits instead a shear-banded flow with zero apparent vis…
The influence of capillary flow on the alignment of the nematic liquid crystal MBBA on fatty acid Langmuir-Blodgett monolayers was studied by optical second-harmonic generation. The surface dipole sensitivity of the technique allows probing the orientation of the first liquid crystal monolayer in the presence of the liquid crystal bulk. It was found that capillary flow causes the first monolayer of liquid crystal molecules in contact with the fatty acid monolayer to be oriented in the flow direction with a large pretilt (78 degrees), resulting in a quasi-planar alignment with splay-bend deform…
Cells are fundamental building blocks of living organisms displaying an array of shapes, morphologies, and textures that encode specific functions and physical behaviors. Elucidating the rules of this code remains a challenge. In this work, we create biomimetic structural building blocks by coating ellipsoidal droplets of a smectic liquid crystal with a protein-based active cytoskeletal gel, thus obtaining core-shell structures. By exploiting the patterned texture and anisotropic shape of the smectic core, we were able to mold the complex nematodynamics of the interfacial active material and i…
