We give the global homotopy classification of nematic textures for a general domain with weak anchoring boundary conditions and arbitrary defect set in terms of twisted cohomology, and give an explicit computation for the case of knotted and linked defects in $\mathbb{R}^3$, showing that the distinct homotopy classes have a 1-1 correspondence with the first homology group of the branched double cover, branched over the disclination loops. We show further that the subset of those classes corresponding to elements of order 2 in this group have representatives that are planar and characterise the obstruction for other classes in terms of merons. The planar textures are a feature of the global defect topology that is not reflected in any local characterisation. Finally, we describe how the global classification relates to recent experiments on nematic droplets and how elements of order 4 relate to the presence of $τ$ lines in cholesterics.
A two-dimensional or quasi-two-dimensional nematic liquid crystal refers to a surface confined system. When such a system is further confined by external line boundaries or excluded from internal line boundaries, the nematic directors form a deformed texture that may display defect points or defect lines, for which winding numbers can be clearly defined. Here, a particular attention is paid to the case when the liquid crystal molecules prefer to form a boundary nematic texture in parallel to the wall surface (i.e., following the homogeneous boundary condition). A general theory, based on geome…
We show that a fixed set of woven defect lines in a nematic liquid crystal supports a set of non-singular topological states which can be mapped on to recurrent stable configurations in the Abelian sandpile model or chip-firing game. The physical correspondence between local Skyrmion flux and sandpile height is made between the two models. Using a toy model of the elastic energy, we examine the structure of energy minima as a function of topological class and show that the system admits domain wall Skyrmion solitons.
In two dimensional nematics, topological defects are point like singularities with both a charge and a phase. We study topological defects within curved nematic textures on the surface of a cylinder. This allows us to isolate the effect of extrinsic curvature on the structure of the topological defect. By minimizing the energy associated with distortions in the nematic director around the core of a defect we show that the phase of the topological defect is coupled to the orientation of the cylinder. This coupling depends on the relative energetic cost associated with splay, bend and twist dist…
Living materials at different length scales manifest active nematic features such as orientational order, nematic topological defects, and active nematic turbulence. Using numerical simulations we investigate the impact of fluid inertia on the collective pattern formation in active nematics. We show that an incremental increase in inertial effects due to reduced viscosity results in gradual melting of nematic order with an increase in topological defect density before a discontinuous transition to a vortex-condensate state. The emergent vortex-condensate state at low enough viscosities coincid…
We study the dynamics of active nematic films on a substrate driven by active flows with or without the incompressible constraint.Through simulations and theoretical analysis, we show that arch patterns are stable in the compressible case, whilst they become unstable under the incompressibility constraint. For compressible flows at high enough activity, stable arches organize themselves into a smectic-like pattern, which induce an associated global polar ordering of $+1/2$ nematic defects. By contrast, divergence-free flows give rise to a local nematic order of the $+1/2$ defects, consisting o…
The growing interest in active nematics and the emerging evidence of the relevance of topological defects in biology asks for reliable data analysis tools to identify, classify and track such defects in simulation and microscopy data. We here provide such tools and demonstrate on two examples, on an active turbulent state in an active nematodynamic model and on emerging nematic order in a multi-phase field model, the possibility to compare statistical data on defect velocities with experimental results. The considered tools, which are physics based and data driven, are compared with each other…
Topological defects play a key role in two-dimensional active nematics, and a transient role in two-dimensional active polar fluids. In this paper, we study both the transient and long-time behavior of defects in two-dimensional active polar fluids in the limit of strong order and overdamped, compressible flow, and compare the defect dynamics with the corresponding active nematics model studied recently. One result is non-central interactions between defect pairs for active polar fluids, and by extending our analysis to allow orientation dynamics of defects, we find that the orientation of $+1…
Recent experiments and numerical studies have drawn attention to the dynamics of active nematics. Two-dimensional active nematics flow spontaneously and exhibit spatiotemporal chaotic flows with proliferation of topological defects in the nematic texture. It has been proposed that the dynamics of active nematics can be understood in terms of the dynamics of interacting defects, propelled by active stress. Previous work has derived effective equations of motion for individual defects as quasi-particles moving in the mean field generated by other defects, but an effective theory governing multi-…
We investigate the effects of extrinsic curvature on the turbulent behavior of a 2D active nematic confined to the surface of a cylinder. The surface of a cylinder has no intrinsic curvatrue and only extrinsic curvature. A nematic field reacts to the extrinsic curvature by trying to align with the lowest principle curvature, in this case parallel to the long axis of the cylinder. When nematics are sufficiently active, there is a proliferation of defects arising from a bend or splay instability depending on the nature of the active stress. The extrinsic curvature of the cylinder beaks the rotat…
We study transformations of self-organized defect arrays at the nematic-smectic A liquid crystal phase transition, and show that these defect configurations are correlated, or "remembered", across the phase transition. A thin film of thermotropic liquid crystal is subjected to hybrid anchoring by an air interface and a water substrate, and viewed under polarized optical microscopy. Upon heating from smectic-A to nematic, a packing of focal conic domains melts into a dense array of boojums---nematic surface defects---which then coarsens by pair-annihilation. With the aid of Landau-de Gennes num…
We adapt the Halperin-Mazenko formalism to analyze two-dimensional active nematics coupled to a generic fluid flow. The governing hydrodynamic equations lead to evolution laws for nematic topological defects and their corresponding density fields. We find that $\pm 1/2$ defects are propelled by the local fluid flow and by the nematic orientation coupled with the flow shear rate. In the overdamped and compressible limit, we recover the previously obtained active self-propulsion of the +1/2 defects. Non-local hydrodynamic effects are primarily significant for incompressible flows, for which it i…
Topological defects are one of the most conspicuous features of liquid crystals. In two dimensional nematics, they have been shown to behave effectively as particles with both, charge and orientation, which dictate their interactions. Here, we study "twisted" defects that have a radially dependent orientation. We find that twist can be partially relaxed through the creation and annihilation of defect pairs. By solving the equations for defect motion and calculating the forces on defects, we identify four distinct elements that govern the relative relaxational motion of interacting topological …
Topological defects and the short-distance behavior of the structure factor in nematic liquid crystals

Topological defects in active liquid crystals can be confined by introducing gradients of activity. Here, we examine the dynamical behavior of two defects confined by a sharp gradient of activity that separates an active circular region and a surrounding passive nematic material. Continuum simulations are used to explain how the interplay among energy injection into the system, hydrodynamic interactions, and frictional forces governs the dynamics of topologically required self-propelling $+1/2$ defects. Our findings are rationalized in terms of a phase diagram for the dynamical response of def…
Nematic colloids exhibit a large diversity of topological defects and structures induced by colloidal particles in the orientationally ordered liquid crystal host fluids. These defects and field configurations define elastic interactions and medium-mediated self-assembly, as well as serve as model systems in exploiting the richness of interactions between topologies and geometries of colloidal surfaces, nematic fields, and topological singularities induced by particles in the nematic bulk and at nematic-colloidal interfaces. Here we demonstrate formation of quarter-strength surface-pinned disc…
Inspired by recent experiments that highlight the role of nematic defects in the morphogenesis of epithelial tissues, we develop a minimal framework to study the dynamics of an active curved surface driven by its nematic texture. Allowing the surface to evolve via relaxational dynamics leads to a theory linking nematic defect dynamics, cellular division rates and Gaussian curvature. Regions of large positive (negative) curvature and positive (negative) growth are colocalized with the presence of positive (negative) defects. Applying this framework to the dynamics of cultured murine neural prog…

We study the spatiotemporal patterns that emerge when an active nematic film is topologically constraint. These topological constraints allow to control the non-equilibrium dynamics of the active system. We consider ellipsoidal shapes for which the resulting defects are 1/2 disclinations and analyze the relation between their location and dynamics and local geometric properties of the ellipsoid. We highlight two dynamic modes: a tunable periodic state that oscillates between two defect configurations on a spherical shape and a tunable rotating state for oblate spheroids. We further demonstrate…
We investigate the emergence of orientational order among +1/2 disclinations in active nematic liquid crystals. Using a combination of theoretical and experimental methods, we show that +1/2 disclinations have short-range antiferromagnetic alignment, as a consequence of the elastic torques originating from their polar structure. The presence of intermediate -1/2 disclinations, however, turns this interaction from anti-aligning to aligning at scales that are smaller than the typical distance between like-sign defects. No long-range orientational order is observed. Strikingly, these effects are …

Non-equilibrium dynamics of topological defects can be used as a fundamental propulsion mechanism in microscopic active matter. Here, we demonstrate swimming of topological defect-propelled colloidal particles in (passive) nematic fluids through experiments and numerical simulations. Dynamic swim strokes of the topological defects are driven by colloidal rotation in an external magnetic field, causing periodic defect rearrangement which propels the particles. The swimming velocity is determined by the colloid's angular velocity, sense of rotation and defect polarity. By controlling them we can…
Surface Alignment, Anchoring Transitions, Optical Properties, and Topological Defects in the Thermotropic Nematic Phase of an Organo-Siloxane Tetrapodes
Topological defects are singularities in material fields that play a vital role across a range of systems: from cosmic microwave background polarization to superconductors, and biological materials. Although topological defects and their mutual interactions have been extensively studied, little is known about the interplay between defects in different fields -- especially when they co-evolve -- within the same physical system. Here, using nematic microfluidics, we study the cross-talk of topological defects in two different material fields -- the velocity field and the molecular orientational …
We numerically investigate how spatial variations of extensile or contractile active stress affect bulk active nematic systems in two and three dimensions. In the absence of defects, activity gradients drive flows which re-orient the nematic director field and thus act as an effective anchoring force. At high activity, defects are created and the system transitions into active turbulence, a chaotic flow state characterized by strong vorticity. We find that in two-dimensional (2D) systems active torques robustly align $+1/2$ defects parallel to activity gradients, with defect heads pointing tow…
Nontrivial shape of colloidal particles create complex elastic distortions and topological defects in liquid crystals and play a key role in governing their electrophoretic propulsion through the medium. Here, we report experimental results on defects and electrophoretic transport of anisometric (snowman-shaped) dielectric particles subjected to an alternating electric field perpendicular to the director in a nematic liquid crystal. We demonstrate that the shape asymmetry gives rise to defect-polymorphism by nucleating point or ring defects at multiple locations on the particle and controls th…
We formulate the statistical dynamics of topological defects in the active nematic phase, formed in two dimensions by a collection of self-driven particles on a substrate. An important consequence of the non-equilibrium drive is the spontaneous motility of strength +1/2 disclinations. Starting from the hydrodynamic equations of active nematics, we derive an interacting particle description of defects that includes active torques. We show that activity, within perturbation theory, lowers the defect-unbinding transition temperature, determining a critical line in the temperature-activity plane t…
We analyze the phase behavior of lyotropic nematic liquid crystals in the self-organizing flow, viz. so called active nematics (AN). Their elastic properties are mutually caused by evolution of topological defects (for instance, disclinations and boojums) and the flow regime. Such changes in elasticity of AN comparing with conventional inactive ones set the new working characteristics of these materials, have an influence on their switchable and tunable properties. In this work, we study the uniaxial droplet AN phases with topological defects in their collective flow, we apply the gauge string…
