Squeezed light is a particularly useful quantum resource, which finds broad applications in quantum information processing, quantum metrology and sensing, and biological measurements. Here we show how to produce squeezed light exploiting the strong exciton-phonon nonlinear interaction in a semiconductor microcavity. The semiconductor microcavity is embedded with a quantum well, which supports both linear and nonlinear interactions among excitons, phonons, and cavity photons. We show that the strong exciton-phonon deformation potential interaction can induce a quadrature-squeezed cavity output field, and further reveal an important role of the exciton-photon coupling in engineering the squeezing spectrum and improving the robustness of the squeezing against thermal noise. Our results indicate that substantial optical squeezing in a broad band, up to tens of gigahertz, can be achieved using currently available parameters.
We theoretically investigate optical bistability, mechanically induced absorption (MIA) and Fano resonance of a hybrid system comprising of a single quantum dot (QD) embedded in a solid state microcavity interacting with the quantized cavity mode and the deformation potential associated with the lattice vibration. We find that the bistability can be tuned by the QD-cavity mode coupling. We further show that the normalized power transmission displays anomalous dispersion indicating that the system can be used to generate slow light. We also demonstrate the possibility of using the system as all…
The future of quantum communication systems and quantum networks heavily rely on the ability to fabricate and coherently control the conversion of photons between different modes based on a solid-state plateform. In this work, we propose and theoretically investigate a scheme to optomechanically control coherent mode conversion of optical photons by utilizing two optically coupled hybrid semiconductor microcavities containing a quantum dot (QD). One of the microcavity is pumped by an external laser and the second cavity is driven by light emitted by the QD that is embedded in the interface sep…
A splitting of the fundamental optical modes in micro/nano-cavities comprising semiconductor heterostructures is commonly observed. Given that this splitting plays an important role for the light-matter interaction and hence quantum technology applications, a method for controlling the mode-splitting is important. In this work we use an open microcavity composed of a "bottom" semiconductor distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) incorporating an n-i-p heterostructure, paired with a "top" curved dielectric DBR. We measure the mode-splitting as a function of wavelength across the stopband. We demonstr…
We theoretically explore optical bistability for possible signature of all optical switching and their performance in a hybrid quantum optomechanical system comprising of two semiconductor microcavity coupled optically. One of the cavity is driven by an external optical pump laser while the second cavity which contains a quantum dot is indirectly driven by light transmitted from the first cavity. The generated bistable behavior due to optomechanical nonlinearity shows a typical optical switching behavior and it can be controlled by changing the laser power, QD cavity coupling, rocking paramete…
We are interested in the emission characteristics of an atom interacting with the polaritonic excitations of a semiconductor or insulator embedded in a one-mode cavity. Since polaritons inside of the cavity exhibit intrinsic squeezing, we discuss how the squeezed polariton ground state modifies the atomic emission and how an indirect evidence of polariton squeezing outside of he cavity may be obtained.
The dynamics of spatial coherence and momentum distribution of polaritons in the regime of Bose-Einstein condensation are investigated in a GaAs microcavity with embedded quantum wells under nonresonant excitation with picosecond laser pulses. It is shown that the onset of the condensate first order sparial coherence is accompanied by narrowing of the polariton momentum distribution. At the same time, at sufficiently high excitation densities, there is significant qualitative discrepancy between the dynamic behavior of the width of the polariton momentum distribution determined from direct mea…
We present a surface passivation method that reduces surface-related losses by almost two orders of magnitude in a highly miniaturized GaAs open microcavity. The microcavity consists of a curved dielectric distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) with radius $\sim 10$ $μ$m paired with a GaAs-based heterostructure. The heterostructure consists of a semiconductor DBR followed by an n-i-p diode with a layer of quantum dots in the intrinsic region. Free-carrier absorption in the highly doped n- and p-layers is minimized by positioning them close to a node of the vacuum electromagnetic-field. The surface,…
We theoretically show that strong mechanical quantum squeezing in a linear optomechanical system can be rapidly generated through the dynamical instability reached in the far red-detuned and ultrastrong coupling regime. We show that this mechanism, which harnesses unstable multimode quantum dynamics, is particularly suited to levitated optomechanics, and we argue for its feasibility for the case of a levitated nanoparticle coupled to a microcavity via coherent scattering. We predict that for sub-millimeter-sized cavities the particle motion, initially thermal and well above its ground state, b…
We show that it is possible to realize quantum superpositions of switched-on and -off strong light-matter interaction in a single quantum dot- semiconductor microcavity system. Such superpositions enable the observation of counterintuitive quantum conditional dynamics effects. Situations are possible where cavity photons as well as the emitter luminescence display exponential decay but their joint detection probability exhibits vacuum Rabi oscillations. Remarkably, these quantum correlations are also present in the nonequilibrium steady state spectra of such coherently driven dissipative quant…
Semiconductor quantum-dot cavity systems are promising sources for solid-state based on-demand generation of single photons for quantum communication. Commonly, the spectral characteristics of the emitted single photon are fixed by system properties such as electronic transition energies and spectral properties of the cavity. In the present work we study single-photon generation from the quantum-dot biexciton through a partly stimulated non-degenerate two-photon emission. We show that frequency and linewidth of the single photon can be fully controlled by the stimulating laser pulse, ultimatel…
Microcavities have long been recognized as indispensable elements in quantum photonic research due to their usefulness for enhanced light extraction and light-matter interaction. A conventional high-Q cavity structure typically allows only a single optical transition to be tuned into resonance with a specific mode. The transition to a more advanced double-cavity structure, however, introduces new and interesting possibilities such as enhancing two spectrally close optical transitions at the same time with two distinct cavity modes. Here, we investigate a cavity structure composed of a monolith…
Modification of electromagnetic quantum fluctuations in the form of quadrature-squeezing is a central quantum resource, which can be generated from nonlinear optical processes. Such a process is facilitated by coherent two-photon excitation of the strongly bound biexciton in atomically thin semiconductors. We show theoretically that interfacing an atomically thin semiconductor with an optical cavity allows to harness this two-photon resonance and use the biexcitonic parametric gain to generate squeezed light with input power an order of magnitude below current state-of-the-art devices with con…
We report the efficient coherent photon scattering from a semiconductor quantum dot embedded in a pillar microcavity. We show that a surface acoustic wave can periodically modulate the energy levels of the quantum dot, but has a negligible effect on the cavity mode. The scattered narrow-band laser is converted to a pulsed single-photon stream, displaying an anti-bunching dip characteristic of single-photon emission. Multiple phonon sidebands are resolved in the emission spectrum, due to the absorption and emission of vibrational quanta in each scattering event.
Exciton-polariton solitons are strongly nonlinear quasiparticles composed of coupled exciton-photon states due to the interaction of light with matter. In semiconductor microcavity systems such as semiconductor micro and nanowires, polaritons are characterized by a negative mass which when combined with the repulsive nonlinear exciton-exciton interaction, leads to the generation of bright polariton solitons. In this work we investigate the dynamics of bright exciton-polariton solitons in a finite-size microcavity waveguide, for which radiative losses are assumed balanced by the external pumpin…
A novel, optimized numerical method of modeling of an exciton-polariton superfluid in a semiconductor microcavity was proposed. Exciton-polaritons are spin-carrying quasiparticles formed from photons strongly coupled to excitons. They possess unique properties, interesting from the point of view of fundamental research as well as numerous potential applications. However, their numerical modeling is challenging due to the structure of nonlinear differential equations describing their evolution. In this paper, we propose to solve the equations with a modified Runge--Kutta method of 4th order, fu…
Narrow dark resonances associated with electromagnetically induced transparency play a key role in enhancing photon-photon interactions. The schemes realized to date relied on the existence of long-lived atomic states with strong van der Waals interactions. Here, we show that by placing an atomically thin semiconductor with ultra-fast radiative decay rate inside a \textcolor{black}{0D} cavity, it is possible to obtain narrow dark or bright resonances in transmission whose width could be much smaller than that of the cavity and bare exciton decay rates. While breaking of translational invarianc…
Quantum simulations are one of the pillars of quantum technologies. These simulations provide insight in fields as varied as high energy physics, many-body physics, or cosmology to name only a few. Several platforms, ranging from ultracold-atoms to superconducting circuits through trapped ions have been proposed as quantum simulators. This article reviews recent developments in another well established platform for quantum simulations: polaritons in semiconductor microcavities. These quasiparticles obey a nonlinear Schrödigner equation (NLSE), and their propagation in the medium can be underst…
