We have investigated non-dipole effects in the interaction of a hydrogen atom with elliptically polarized laser pulses of intensity 10$^{14}$ W/cm$^2$ with about 8 fs duration. The study was performed within the framework of a hybrid quantum-quasiclassical approach in which the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for an electron and the classical Hamilton equations for the center-of-mass (CM) of an atom are simultaneously integrated. It is shown that the spatial inhomogeneity $ \mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{r}$ of the laser field and the presence of a magnetic component in it lead to the non-separability of the CM and electron variables in a neutral atom and, as a consequence, to its acceleration. We have established a strict correlation between the total probability of excitation and ionization of an atom and the velocity of its CM acquired as a result of interaction with a laser pulse. The acceleration of the atom weakly depends on the polarization of the laser in the considered region (\mbox{5 eV $\lesssim \hbarω\lesssim $ 27 eV}) of its frequencies. However, the transition from linear to elliptical laser polarization leads to the twisting of the atom relative to the axis directed along the pulse propagation (coinciding with the direction of the momentum of the accelerated atom). It is shown that with increasing ellipticity the twisting effect increases and reaches its maximum value with circular polarization. At this point the projection of the orbital angular momentum acquired by the electron onto the direction of the pulse propagation reaches its maximum value. Further exploration of the possibilities for producing accelerated and twisted atoms with electromagnetic pulses is of interest for a number of prospective applications.
An atomic magnetometer operated with elliptically polarized light is investigated theoretically and experimentally. To explore the potential of this magnetometric configuration, the analytical form of the outgoing signal is derived. Parameters that significantly influence the performance are optimized, which lead to a sensitivity of 300 $\rm fT/\sqrt{Hz}$ at 45 $^{\circ}$C with a 2$ imes$2$ imes2$ cm uncoated Rb vapor cell. It is remarkable that a sensitivity of 690 $\rm fT/\sqrt{Hz}$ is achieved at room temperature of 24 $^{\circ}$C, which is improved by an order of magnitude compared with …
We investigate the influence of intense, elliptically polarized driving fields on high-order harmonic spectra from aligned diatomic molecules. We derive a generalized two-center interference condition for elliptically polarized fields, which accounts for s-p mixing and the orbital symmetry, within the strong-field and the single-active electron approximation. We show that the non-vanishing ellipticity introduces an effective dynamic shift in the angle for which the two-center interference maxima and minima occur, with regard to the existing condition for linearly polarized fields. This shift d…
We investigate the coupling of the spin angular momentum of light beams with elliptical polarization to the spin degree of freedom of free electrons. It is shown that this coupling, which is of similar origin as the well-known spin-orbit coupling, can lead to spin precession. The spin-precession frequency is proportional to the product of the laser-field's intensity and its spin density. The electron-spin dynamics is analyzed by employing exact numerical methods as well as time-dependent perturbation theory based on the fully relativistic Dirac equation and on the nonrelativistic Pauli equatio…
Spectra of circularly polarized harmonics is calculated by numerically solving the Time-Dependent Schrödinger Equation for a 2D model of Ne atom using circularly polarized fundamental with counter-rotating second harmonic laser fields. We demonstrate strong asymmetry between left- and right- circularly polarized harmonics when a ground state with p-type symmetry is used. It arises due to the circular polarization of individual attosecond pulses in the generated pulse train. Reducing the length of the counter-rotating drivers and introducing a small time-shift between them allows to generate a …
We join the tribute to Professor N.B. Delone in this memorial issue by presenting the results of new calculations on the effects of ellipticity on double ionization by short and strong near-optical laser pulses.
We investigate the strong-field ionization of atomic hydrogen in a few-cycle elliptically polarized infrared pulse by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. The dependence of the photoelectron momentum distribution on the pulse intensity, ellipticity, length, envelope, and carrier envelope phase is analyzed. In particular, we explain the variation of the electron offset angle with asymptotic electron energy through the combined action of the field and the Coulomb potential, and demonstrate that low-ellipticity pulses make it possible to access the electron release time.
We find specific polarizations of components of a bichromatic field, which allow one to prepare pure superposition states of atoms, using the coherent population trapping effect. These $m$$-$$m$ states are prepared in the system of Zeeman substates of the ground-state hyperfine levels with arbitrary angular momenta $F_1$ and $F_2$. It is established that, in general case $m
e 0$, the use of waves with elliptical polarizations ($ε_1$$\perp$$ε_2$ field configuration for alkali metal atoms) is necessary for the pure state preparation. We analytically show an unique advantage of the D1 line of al…
Increasing ellipticity usually suppresses the recollision probability drastically. In contrast, we report on a recollision channel with large return energy and a substantial probability, regardless of the ellipticity. The laser envelope plays a dominant role in the energy gained by the electron, and in the conditions under which the electron comes back to the core. We show that this recollision channel eciently triggers multiple ionization with an elliptically polarized pulse.
Spin-exchange relaxation free alkali-metal magnetometers typically operate in the regime of high optical density, presenting challenges for simple and efficient optical pumping and detection. We describe a high-sensitivity Rb magnetometer using a single elliptically-polarized off-resonant laser beam. Circular component of the light creates relatively uniform spin polarization while the linear component is used to measure optical rotation generated by the atoms. Modulation of the atomic spin direction with an oscillating magnetic field shifts the detected signal to high frequencies. Using a fib…
Using a 1 to 2 transition as an analytically tractable model, we discuss in detail magneto-optical resonances of both EIA (electromagnetically induced absorption) and EIT (electromagnetically induced transparency) types in the Hanle configuration. The analysis is made for arbitrary rate of depolarizing collisions in the excited state and arbitrary elliptical field polarization. The obtained results clearly show that the main reason for the EIA sub-natural resonance is the spontaneous transfer of anisotropy from the excited level to the ground one. In the EIA case we predict the negative struct…
Based on the strong-field approximation, we obtain analytical expressions for the initial momentum at the tunnel exit and instantaneous ionization rate of tunneling ionization in elliptically polarized laser fields with arbitrary ellipticity. The tunneling electron reveals a nonzero offset of the initial momentum at the tunnel exit in the elliptically polarized laser field. We find that the transverse and longitudinal components of this momentum offset with respect to the instantaneous field direction are directly related to the time derivatives of the instantaneous laser electric field along …
We explore the influence of elliptical polarization on the (non)sequential two-photon double ionization of atomic helium with ultrashort extreme ultraviolet (XUV) light fields using time-dependent full ab-initio simulations. The energy and angular distributions of photoelectrons are found to be strongly dependent on the ellipticity. The correlation minimum in the joint angular distribution becomes more prominently visible with increasing ellipticity. In a pump-probe sequence of two subsequent XUV pulses with varying ellipticities, polarization tagging allows to discriminate between sequential …
We examine correlated electron and doubly charged ion momentum spectra from strong field double ionization of Neon employing intense elliptically polarized laser pulses. An ellipticity-dependent asymmetry of correlated electron and ion momentum distributions has been observed. Using a 3D semiclassical model, we demonstrate that our observations reflect the sub-cycle dynamics of the recollision process. Our work reveals a general physical picture for recollision-impact double ionization with elliptical polarization, and demonstrates the possibility of ultrafast control of the recollision dynami…
We predict theoretically and demonstrate experimentally an ellipticity-dependent nonlinear magneto-optic rotation of elliptically-polarized light propagating in a coherent atomic medium. We show that this effect results from a hexadecapole and higher order momenta of atomic coherence, and is associated with an enhancement of Kerr and higher orders nonlinearities accompanied by suppression of the other linear and nonlinear susceptibility terms of the medium. These nonlinearities might be useful for quantum signal processing. In particular, we report an observation of an enhancement the polariza…
A recent paper reported elliptically polarized high-order harmonics from aligned N$_2$ using a linearly polarized driving field [X. Zhou \emph{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. extbf{102}, 073902 (2009)]. This observation cannot be explained in the standard treatment of the Lewenstein model and has been ascribed to many-electron effects or the influence of the Coulomb force on the continuum electron. We show that non-vanishing ellipticity naturally appears within the Lewenstein model when using a multi-center stationary phase method for treating the dynamics of the continuum electron. The reason for…
We propose a simple and effective way of creating pure dark superposition states. The generation of pure states is carried out by using bichromatic radiation with controllable polarization ellipticity. We derived analytic formulas for polarization elipticity to obtain pure dark states of different Zeeman sublevels of alkali atoms. Experimentally we accumulated ~60% of the atoms in the 0-0 dark state of the D1 line of Rb87
We investigate direct above-threshold ionization in diatomic molecules, with particular emphasis on how quantum interference is altered by a driving field of non-vanishing ellipticity. This interference may be either temporal, i.e., related to ionization events occurring at different times, or spatial, i.e., related to the electron emission at different centers in the molecule. Employing the strong-field approximation and saddle-point methods, we find that, in general, for non-vanishing ellipticity, there will be a blurring of the temporal and spatial interference patterns. The former blurring…
We present here a new parametric resonance magnetometer scheme based on elliptically polarized pumping light and two radio-frequency fields applied along the two optical pumping directions. At optimum ellipticity and radio-frequency fields amplitudes the three components of the magnetic field are measured with an isotropic sensitivity. Compared to the usual alignment-based parametric resonance magnetometers, the sensitivity is degraded by a factor 2 for two components of the magnetic field but improved by a factor 11 for the third one. This new magnetometer configuration could be particularly …
We perform a systematic analysis of how ultrafast photoelectron holography is influenced by an elliptically polarized field, with emphasis on quantum interference effects. We find that the interplay of the external field and the binding potential leads to twisted holographic patterns for low ellipticities and recover well-known angular offsets for high ellipticities. Using the Coulomb quantum-orbit strong-field approximation (CQSFA), we assess how the field ellipticity affects specific holographic patterns, such as the fan and the spider. The interplay of the external field and the binding pot…
Tightly focused optical dipole traps induce vector light shifts ("fictitious magnetic fields") which complicate their use for single-atom trapping and manipulation. The problem can be mitigated by adding a larger, real magnetic field, but this solution is not always applicable; in particular, it precludes fast switching to a field-free configuration. Here we show that this issue can be addressed elegantly by deliberately adding a small elliptical polarization component to the dipole beam. In our experiments with single $^{87}$Rb atoms in a chopped trap, we observe improvements up to a factor 1…
Employing recent developed magneto-optical trap recoil ion momentum spectroscopy (MOTRIMS) combining cold atom, strong laser pulse, and ultrafast technologies, we study momentum distributions of the multiply ionized cold rubidium (Rb) induced by the elliptically polarized laser pulses (35 fs, $1.3 imes 10^{15}$ W/cm$^2$). The complete vector momenta of Rbn+ ions up to charge state n = 4 are recorded with extremely high resolution (0.12 a.u. for Rb$^+$). Variations of characteristic multi-bands displayed in momentum distributions, as the ellipticity varies from the linear to circular polariza…
Relativistic tunnel ionization of atoms by intense, elliptically polarized light is considered. The relativistic version of the Landau-Dykhne formula is employed. The general analytical expression is obtained for the relativistic photoelectron spectra. The most probable angle of electron emission, the angular distribution near this angle, the position of the maximum and the width of the energy spectrum are calculated. In the weak field limit we obtain the familiar non-relativistic results. For the case of circular polarization our analytical results are in agreement with recent derivations of …
We study the higher-harmonic generation (HHG) using elliptically polarized two-color driving fields. The HHG via bi-chromatic counter-rotating laser fields is a promising source of circularly polarized ultrashort XUV radiation at the attosecond time scale. The ellipticity or the polarization of the attosecond pulses can be tweaked by modifying the emitted harmonics' ellipticity, which can be controlled by varying the driver fields. We propose a simple setup to control the polarization of the driving fields, which eventually changes the ellipticity of the attosecond pulses. A well-defined scali…
The nondirect product discrete variable representation (npDVR) is developed for the time-dependent Schrödinger equation with nonseparable angular variables and is applied to a hydrogen atom in elliptically polarized strong laser fields. The 2D npDVR is constructed on spherical harmonics orthogonalized on the 2D angular grids of the Popov and Lebedev 2D cubatures for the unit sphere. With this approach we have investigated the dynamics of a hydrogen atom initially in its ground state in elliptically polarized laser fields with the intensity up to $I=10^{14}$ W/{cm}$^2$ and wavelength of $λ=800$…
The dynamics of Rydberg states of atomic hydrogen driven by elliptically polarized microwaves of frequency fulfilling 2:1 classical resonance condition is investigated both semiclassically and quantum mechanically in a simplified two-dimensional model of an atom. Semiclassical results for quasienergies of the system are shown to be in a good agreement with exact quantum data. The structures of the quantum states are found to reflect the underlying classical dynamics; especially we show the existence of nonspreading wavepackets propagating on elliptical trajectories.
The dynamics of Rydberg states of atomic hydrogen illuminated by resonant elliptically polarized microwaves is investigated both semiclassically and quantum mechanically in a simplified two-dimensional model of an atom. Semiclassical predictions for quasienergies of the system are found to be in a very good agreement with exact quantum data enabling a classification of possible types of motion and their dynamics with the change of the ellipticity of the microwaves. Particular attention is paid to the dynamics of the nonspreading wave packet states which are found to exist for an arbitrary micr…
The role of Coulomb focusing in above-threshold ionization in an elliptically polarized mid-infrared strong laser field is investigated within a semiclassical model incorporating tunneling and Coulomb field effects. It is shown that Coulomb focusing up to moderate ellipticity values is dominated by multiple forward scattering of the ionized electron by the atomic core that creates a characteristic low-energy structure in the photoelectron spectrum and is responsible for the peculiar energy scaling of the ionization normalized yield along the major polarization axis. At higher ellipticities, th…
We consider the formation of RbCs by an elliptically polarized laser pulse. By varying the ellipticity of the laser for sufficiently large laser intensity, we see that the formation probability presents a strong dependence, especially around ellipticity 1/ $\sqrt$ 2. We show that the analysis can be reduced to the investigation of the long-range interaction between the two atoms. The formation is mainly due to a small momentum shifts induced by the laser pulse. We analyze these results using the Silberstein's expressions of the polarizabilities, and show that the ellipticity of the field acts …
An analytic description of laser-assisted electron-atom scattering (LAES) in an elliptically polarized field is presented using time-dependent effective range (TDER) theory to treat both electron-laser and electron-atom interactions non-perturbatively. Closed-form formulas describing plateau features in LAES spectra are derived quantum mechanically in the low-frequency limit. These formulas provide an analytic explanation for key features of the LAES differential cross section. For the low-energy region of the LAES spectrum, our result generalizes the Kroll-Watson formula to the case of ellipt…
We present an experimental investigation of ultrafast-laser driven Rabi oscillations of atomic rubidium. Since the broadband spectrum of an ultrafast laser pulse simultaneously couples all the electronic hyperfine transitions between the excited and ground states, the complex excitation linkages involved with the D1 or D2 transition are energy degenerate. Here, by applying the Morris-Shore transformation, it is shown that this multi-state system is reduced to a set of independent two-state systems and dark states. In experiments performed by ultrafast laser interactions of atomic rubidium in t…
It is well-known from numerical and experimental results that the fraction of Rydberg states (excited neutral atoms) created by tunnel ionization declines dramatically with increasing ellipticity of laser light. We present a method to analyze this dependence on ellipticity, deriving a probability distribution of Rydberg states that agrees closely with recent experimental [1] and numerical results. In particular, contradicting the existing proposed mechanism [1] and general expectations, our results indicate that the dependence of Rydberg yield on laser ellipticity is not caused by a rescatteri…
Optically pumped magnetometers usually rely on optical pumping using circularly- or linearly-polarized light. We study here zero-field magnetometers pumped with elliptically-polarized light, preparing both atomic orientation and alignment with complementary geometries. We start by extending the "three-step approach" for elliptically-polarized pumping. This allows us studying the Hanle effect in elliptical polarization by comparing the analytical absorption signals with experiments made on helium-4 metastable state. We then study parametric resonance magnetometers based on elliptical polarizati…
We study high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from aligned molecules in strong elliptically polarized laser fields numerically and analytically. Our simulations show that the spectra and polarization of HHG depend strongly on the molecular alignment and the laser ellipticity. In particular, for small laser ellipticity, large ellipticity of harmonics with high intensity is observed for parallel alignment, with forming a striking ellipticity hump around the threshold. We show that the interplay of the molecular structure and two-dimensional electron motion plays an important role here. This phen…
The role of the Coulomb potential on the generation of elliptically polarized high-order harmonics from atoms driven by elliptically polarized laser is investigated analytically. It is found that the Coulomb effect makes a contribution to the harmonic ellipticity for low harmonic orders and short quantum path. By using the strong-field eikonal-Volkov approximation, we analyze the influence of the Coulomb potential on the dynamics of the continuum state and find that the obtained harmonic ellipticity in our simulation originates from the break of symmetry of the continuum state.
We consider an electron in an atom driven by an infrared (IR) elliptically polarized laser field after its ionization by an ultrashort extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulse. We find that, regardless of the atom species and the laser ellipticity, there exists XUV parameters for which the electron returns to its parent ion after ionizing, i.e., undergoes a recollision. This shows that XUV pulses trigger efficiently recollisions in atoms regardless of the ellipticity of the IR field. The XUV parameters for which the electron undergoes a recollision are obtained by studying the location of recolliding p…
Multielectron double ionization with elliptically polarized light is examined theoretically using a classical ensemble method going beyond the single-active-electron approximation. A knee structure in the ion signal is found. Our analysis provides an explanation for newly observed SDI phenomena.
Spin-dependent Kapitza-Dirac scattering of electron beams from counterpropagating bichromatic laser waves in various polarization geometries is studied. The corresponding scattering probabilities are obtained by analytical and numerical solutions of the time-dependent Dirac equation, assuming a field frequency ratio of 2. When the fundamental field mode is circular-polarized, we show that spin dynamics are generally suppressed at low intensities, but can become distinct at high intensities. Conversely, when a linearly or elliptically polarized fundamental mode is combined with a second harmoni…
We investigate, through simulation, the evolution of polarization states during atmospheric propagation of high power, ultrashort laser pulses. A delayed rotational response model handling arbitrary, transverse polarization couples both the amplitude and phase of the polarization states. We find that, while circularly and linearly polarized pulses maintain their polarization, elliptically polarized pulses become depolarized due to energy equilibration between left and right circularly polarized states. The depolarization can be detrimental to remote radiation generation schemes and obscures ti…
We investigate the polarization properties of high harmonics generated with the bichromatic counterrotating circularly polarized (BCCP) laser fields by numerically solving time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE). It is found that, the helicity of the elliptically polarized harmonic emission is reversed at particular harmonic orders. Based on the time-frequency analysis and the classical three-step model, the correspondence between the positions of helicity reversions and the classical trajectories of continuum electrons is established. It is shown that, the electrons ionized at one lobe of …
In the first Born approximation and using an elliptically polarized laser field, the Mott scattering of an electron by a Coulomb potential is investigated using the Dirac-Volkov states to describe the incident and scattered electrons. The results obtained are compared with the results of S.M. Li extit{et al} \cite{1} for the case of a linearly polarized laser field and with the results of Y. Attaourti extit{et al} \cite{2} for the case of a circular polarization.
The operation of a high sensitive atomic magnetometer using resonant elliptically polarized light is demonstrated. The experimental geometry allows autonomous frequency stabilization of the laser, thereby offers compact operation of the overall device. The magnetometry is based on measurement of the zero magnetic field resonance in degenerate two level system using polarimetric detection and has a preliminary sensitivity of <10 pT/Hz1/2 @ 1 Hz.
The dynamics of atomic hydrogen placed in a static electric field and illuminated by elliptically polarized microwaves is studied in the range of small field amplitudes where perturbation calculations are applicable. For a general configuration of the fields any generalized time-reversal symmetry is broken and, as the classical dynamics is chaotic, the level statistics obeys the random matrices prediction of Gaussian unitary ensemble.
The total ionization rate of biharmonic ($ω+ 3ω$) ionization is studied within the independent particle approximation and the third order perturbation theory. Particular attention is paid to how the polarization of the biharmonic light field affects the total rate. The ratios of the biharmonic ionization rates for linearly and circularly polarized beams as well as for corotating and counterrotating elliptically polarized beams are analyzed, and how they depend on the beam parameters, such as photon frequency or phase between $ω$ and $3ω$ light beams. We show that the interference of the biharm…
Photoelectron angular distributions (PADs) of oriented polar molecules in response to different polarized lasers are systematically investigated. It is found that the PADs of polar CO molecules show three distinct styles excited by linearly, elliptically and circularly polarized lasers respectively. In the case of elliptical polarization, a deep suppression is observed along the major axis and the distribution concentrates approximately along the minor axis. Additionally, it is also found that the concentrated distributions rotate clockwise as the ellipticity increases. Our investigation prese…
We theoretically investigate electron-hole recollisions in high-harmonic generation (HHG) in band-gap solids irradiated by linearly and elliptically polarized drivers. We find that in many cases the emitted harmonics do not originate in electron-hole pairs created at the minimum band gap, where the tunneling probability is maximized, but rather in pairs created across an extended region of the Brillouin zone (BZ). In these situations, the analogy to gas-phase HHG in terms of the short- and long-trajectory categorizations is inadequate. Our analysis methodology comprises three complementary lev…
Natively, atomic and molecular processes develop in a sub-femtosecond time scale. In order to, for instance, track and capture the electron motion in that scale we need suitable `probes'. Attosecond pulses configure the most appropriate tools for such a purpose. These ultrashort bursts of light are generated when a strong laser field interacts with matter and high-order harmonics of the driving source are produced. In this work, we propose a way to twist attosecond pulse trains. In our scheme, each of the attosecond pulses in the train has a well-defined linear polarization, but with a differe…
We theoretically investigate high-harmonic generation in hexagonal boron nitride with linearly polarized laser pulses. We show that imperfect recollisions between electron-hole pairs in the crystal give rise to an electron-hole-pair polarization energy that leads to a double-peak structure in the subcycle emission profiles. An extended recollision model (ERM) is developed that allows for such imperfect recollisions, as well as effects related to Berry connections, Berry curvatures, and transition-dipole phases. The ERM illuminates the distinct spectrotemporal characteristics of harmonics emitt…
