It is shown that the space of finite-to-finite holomorphic correspondences on an OT-manifold is discrete. When the OT-manifold has no proper infinite complex-analytic subsets, it then follows by known model-theoretic results that its cartesian powers have no interesting complex-analytic families of subvarieties. The methods of proof, which are similar to [Moosa, Moraru, and Toma ``An essentially saturated surface not of Kähler-type", {\em Bull. of the LMS}, 40(5):845--854, 2008], require studying finite unramified covers of OT-manifolds.
These are the lecture notes for the Morningside Center of Mathematics Geometry Summer School on August 15-20, 2022. These lectures sketch the results by Yau, Demailly-Paun, the author, and Datar-Pingali about generalized Monge-Ampère equations and subvarieties and aim to use these results to study the Hodge conjecture.
In this paper, we obtain optimal $L^2$ extension of holomorphic sections of a holomorphic vector bundle from subvarieties in weakly pseudoconvex Kähler manifolds. Moreover, in the case of line bundle the Hermitian metric is allowed to be singular.
In this paper (a sequel to B. Drinovec Drnovsek and F. Forstneric, Holomorphic curves in complex spaces, Duke Math. J. 139 (2007), 203-253) we obtain existence and approximation results for closed complex subvarieties that are normalized by strongly pseudoconvex Stein domains. Our sufficient condition for the existence of such subvarieties in a complex manifold is expressed in terms of the Morse indices and the number of positive Levi eigenvalues of an exhaustion function on the manifold. Examples show that our condition cannot be weakened in general. Optimal results are obtained for subvariet…
A hypercomplex manifold M is a manifold with a triple I,J,K of complex structure operators satisfying quaternionic relations. For each quaternion L=aI +bJ+cK, L^2=-1, L is also a complex structure operator on M, called an induced complex structure. We are studying compact complex subvarieties of (M,L), when L is a generic induced complex structure. Under additional assumptions (Obata holonomy contained in SL(n,H), existence of an HKT metric), we prove that (M,L) contains no divisors, and all complex subvarieties of codimension 2 are trianalytic (that is, also hypercomplex).
The Oeljeklaus-Toma (OT-) manifolds are complex manifolds constructed by Oeljeklaus and Toma from certain number fields, and generalizing the Inoue surfaces $S_m$. On each OT-manifold we construct a holomorphic line bundle with semipositive curvature form and trivial Chern class. Using this form, we prove that the OT-manifolds admitting a locally conformally Kahler structure have no non-trivial complex subvarieties. The proof is based on the Strong Approximation theorem for number fields, which implies that any leaf of the null-foliation of w is Zariski dense.
We prove that any compact Kähler 3-dimensional manifold which has no non-trivial complex subvarieties is a torus. This is a very special case of a general conjecture on the structure of 'simple manifolds', central in the bimeromorphic classification of compact Kähler manifolds. The proof follows from the Brunella pseudo-effectivity theorem, combined with fundamental results of Siu and of the second author on the Lelong numbers of closed positive (1,1)-currents, and with a version of the hard Lefschetz theorem for pseudo-effective line bundles, due to Takegoshi and Demailly-Peternell-Schneider.…
Suppose that Y is a complex manifold with the property that any holomorphic map from a compact convex set in a complex Euclidean space C^n (for any n) to Y is a uniform limit of entire maps from C^n to Y. We prove that a holomorphic map from a closed complex subvariety X_0 in a Stein manifold X to the manifold Y extends to a holomorphic map of X to Y provided that it extends to a continuous map. We then establish the equivalence of four Oka-type properties of a complex manifold. We also generalize a theorem of Siu and Demailly on the existence of open Stein neighborhoods of Stein subvarieties …
Let $X$ be a hyperkaehler manifold. Trianalytic subvarieties of $X$ are subvarieties which are complex analytic with respect to all complex structures induced by the hyperkaehler structure. Given a 2-dimensional complex torus $T$, the Hilbert scheme $T^{[n]}$ classifying zero-dimensional subschemes of $T$ admits a hyperkaehler structure. A finite cover of $T^{[n]}$ is a product of $T$ and a simply connected hyperkaehler manifold $K^{[n-1]}$, called generalized Kummer variety. We show that for $T$ generic, the corresponding generalized Kummer variety has no trianalytic subvarieties. This implie…
In this note we study two features of submanifolds (subvarieties) with ample normal bundles in a compact Kähler manifold X. First, we study how algebraic X can be, i.e. we investigate the algebraic dimension. Second, we study curves with ample normal bundles in case X is projective. We prove in various cases that the class of the curve is in the interior of the Mori cone.
A nilmanifold is a (left) quotient of a nilpotent Lie group by a cocompact lattice. A hypercomplex structure on a manifold is a triple of complex structure operators satisfying the quaternionic relations. A hypercomplex nilmanifold is a compact quotient of a nilpotent Lie group equipped with a left-invariant hypercomplex structure. Such a manifold admits a whole 2-dimensional sphere $S^2$ of complex structures induced by quaternions. We prove that for any hypercomplex nilmanifold $M$ and a generic complex structure $L\in S^2$, the complex manifold $(M,L)$ has algebraic dimension 0. A stronger …
Let X be a Stein manifold and let Y be a complex manifold which admits a spray in the sense of Gromov (Oka's principle for holomorphic sections of elliptic bundles, J. Amer. Math. Soc. 2, pp. 851-897 (1989)). We prove that for every closed complex subvariety X_0 of X and for every continuous map f_0 from X to Y whose restriction to X_0 is holomorphic there exists a homotopy of maps f_t from X to Y whose restrictions to X_0 agree with f_0 and such that the map f_1 is holomorphic on X. We obtain analogous results for sections of holomorphic submersions with sprays over Stein manifolds or Stein s…
The complex Plateau problem is analogous, in a Hermitian complex manifold, to the classical Plateau problem in 3 dimensional real space: it is a geometrical problem of extension of a closed real manifold into a complex analytic subvariety, or into a Levi-flat subvariety. Minimality of complex analytic subvarieties and analogous properties of Levi-flat subvarieties, in Kähler manifolds, are recalled or given. Known results in n dimensional complex and projective complex spaces are recalled. Extensions to real parametric problems are solved or proposed, leading to the construction of Levi-flat h…
We study Nakai-Moishezon type question and Donaldson's "tamed to compatible" question for almost complex structures on rational four manifolds. By extending Taubes' subvarieties--current--form technique to $J-$nef genus $0$ classes, we give affirmative answers of these two questions for all tamed almost complex structures on $S^2$ bundles over $S^2$ as well as for many geometrically interesting tamed almost complex structures on other rational four manifolds, including the del Pezzo ones.
Let X and Y be complex manifolds. One says that maps from X to Y satisfy the Oka principle if the inclusion of the space of holomorphic maps from X to Y into the space of continuous maps is a weak homotopy equivalence. In 1957 H. Grauert proved the Oka principle for maps from Stein manifolds to complex Lie groups and homogeneous spaces, as well as for sections of fiber bundles with homogeneous fibers over a Stein base. In 1989 M. Gromov extended Grauert's result to sections of submersions over a Stein base which admit dominating sprays over small open sets in the base; for proof see [F. Forstn…
We prove that the non-Kahler locus of a nef and big class on a compact complex manifold bimeromorphic to a Kahler manifold equals its null locus. In particular this gives an analytic proof of a theorem of Nakamaye and Ein-Lazarsfeld-Mustata-Nakamaye-Popa. As an application, we show that finite time non-collapsing singularities of the Kahler-Ricci flow on compact Kahler manifolds always form along analytic subvarieties, thus answering a question of Feldman-Ilmanen-Knopf and Campana. We also extend the second author's results about noncollapsing degenerations of Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on Cala…
This is a survey on the homotopy principle in complex analysis on Stein manifolds, also called the Oka principle in this context. We concentrate on the following topics: the Oka-Grauert principle (classification of holomorphic vector bundles); the homotopy principle for holomorphic mappings from Stein manifolds and, more generally, for sections of holomorphic submersions with sprays; question on removability of intersections of holomorphic mappings with complex subvarieties; embeddings and immersions of Stein manifolds in affine spaces of minimal dimension; embeddings of open Riemann surfaces …
The paper is related to the author's talk at the Hayama Symposium in Complex Analysis in December 2000. In section 1 we survey results on the Oka principle for sections of holomorphic submersions over Stein manifolds. In section 2 we apply these results to the lifting problem for holomorphic mappings from Stein manifolds, and in section 3 we apply them to the problem of removability of intersections of holomorphic maps from Stein manifolds with closed complex subvarieties of the target space.
Moment-angle manifolds provide a wide class of examples of non-Kaehler compact complex manifolds. A complex moment-angle manifold Z is constructed via certain combinatorial data, called a complete simplicial fan. In the case of rational fans, the manifold Z is the total space of a holomorphic bundle over a toric variety with fibres compact complex tori. In general, a complex moment-angle manifold Z is equipped with a canonical holomorphic foliation F which is equivariant with respect to the (C*)^m-action. Examples of moment-angle manifolds include Hopf manifolds of Vaisman type, Calabi-Eckmann…
Let f be a meromorphic correspondence on a compact Kahler manifold. We show that the topological entropy of f is bounded from above by the logarithm of its maximal dynamical degree. An analogous estimate for the entropy on subvarieties is given. We also discuss a notion of Julia and Fatou sets.
We prove that the tangential Cauchy-Riemann operator has closed range on Levi-pseudoconvex CR manifolds that are embedded in a q-convex complex manifold $X$. Our result generalizes the known case when $X$ is a Stein manifold.
In this note, we give explicit examples of compact complex 3-folds which admit automorphisms that are isotopic to the identity through C $\infty$-diffeomorphisms but not through biholomorphisms. These automorphisms play an important role in the construction of the Te-ichm{ü}ller stack of higher dimensional manifolds.
Let $D=\{ρ<0\}$ be a smooth domain of finite type in an almost complex manifold (M,J) of real dimension four. We assume that the defining function $ρ$ is J-plurisubharmonic on a neighborhood of $\overline{D}$. We study the asymptotic behavior of pseudoholomorphic discs contained in the domain D.
Let $M$ be a compact complex manifold. In this paper we give a simple proof of the bimeromorphic invariance of the higher Todd genera of $M$, a result first proved implicitly by Brasselet-Schürmann-Yokura using algebraic methods.
