Inside a medium, showers originating from a very high energy particle develop via medium-induced splitting processes such as bremsstrahlung and pair production. During shower development, two consecutive splittings sometimes overlap quantum mechanically, so that they cannot be treated independently. Some of these effects can be absorbed into an effective value of a medium parameter known as $\hat q$. Previous calculations (with certain simplifying assumptions) have found that, after adjusting the value of $\hat q$, the leftover effect of overlapping splittings is quite small for purely gluonic large-$N_c$ showers but is very much larger for large-$N_f$ QED showers, at comparable values of $Nα$. Here, by investigating the same problem for QCD with *quarks* in the large-$N_f$ limit of many quark flavors, we make a first study of whether the small effect in purely gluonic showers (i) was merely an accident or (ii) is more broadly characteristic of such overlap effects in QCD. We also offer a qualitative explanation for the large size of the effect in QED vs. QCD.
We give details of our study of whether high-energy gluon showers inside a QCD medium can be treated as a sequence of individual splitting processes $g \to gg$, or whether there is significant quantum overlap between where one splitting ends and the next begins (neglecting effects that can be absorbed into an effective value of the jet quenching parameter $\hat q$ that characterizes the medium). The study is carried out by imagining in-medium gluon shower development in the simplest theoretical situation, which includes imagining a very large, static, homogeneous medium and taking the large $N…
We discuss how the UN2LOPS scheme for matching NNLO calculations to parton showers can be applied to processes with large higher-order perturbative QCD corrections. We focus on Higgs-boson production through gluon fusion as an example. We also present an NNLO fixed-order event generator for this reaction.
We study the evolution of a partonic jet shower propagating through a quark-gluon plasma. Combining the in-medium evolutions of the leading parton and shower gluons, we compute the depletion of the energy from the jet cone by dissipation through elastic collisions with medium constituents, by scattering of shower partons to larger angles, and by radiation outside the jet cone. Numerical results are presented for the nuclear modification of dijet asymmetry in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC.
We consider a model of transverse momentum production in which non-perturbative smearing takes place throughout the perturbative evolution, by a simple modification to an initial state parton shower algorithm. Using this as the important non-perturbative ingredient, we get a good fit to data over a wide range of energy. Combining it with the non-perturbative masses and cutoffs that are a feature of conventional parton showers also leads to a reasonable fit. We discuss the extrapolation to the LHC.
We present a next-to-leading order calculation of Higgs boson production via gluon fusion interfaced to shower Monte Carlo programs, implemented according to the POWHEG method. A detailed comparison with MC@NLO and PYTHIA is carried out for several observables, for the Tevatron and LHC colliders. Comparisons with next-to-next-to-leading order results and with resummed ones are also presented.
The possibility of detection of some features of high energy particle interactions with detectors placed at medium depths underground through studies on high energy muons is investigated. These muons carry information about the early interactions occurring during the development of the hadron cascade near the top of the atmosphere. They might reveal the effects resulting from creation of quark gluon plasma in interactions of ultra high energy cosmic ray iron nuclei with air nuclei.
We propose to model hadronization of parton showers in QCD jets through a hybrid approach involving quark recombination and string fragmentation. This is achieved by allowing gluons at the end of the perturbative shower evolution to undergo a non-perturbative splitting into quark and antiquark pairs, then applying a Monte-Carlo version of instantaneous quark recombination, and finally subjecting remnant quarks (those which have not found a recombination partner) to Lund string fragmentation. When applied to parton showers from the PYTHIA Monte Carlo event generator, the final hadron spectra fr…
Hard partons moving through a dense QCD medium lose energy by radiative emissions and elastic scatterings. Deposition of the radiative contribution into the medium requires rescattering of the radiated gluons. We compute the total energy loss and its deposition into the medium self-consistently within the same formalism, assuming perturbative interaction between probe and medium. The same transport coefficients that control energy loss of the hard parton determine how the energy is deposited into the medium; this allows a parameter free calculation of the latter once the former have been compu…
Predictions for our ability to distinguish quark and gluon jets vary by more than a factor of two between different parton showers. We study this problem using analytic resummed predictions for the thrust event shape up to NNLL' using $e^+e^- \to Z \to q \bar q$ and $e^+e^- \to H \to gg$ as proxies for quark and gluon jets. We account for hadronization effects through a nonperturbative shape function, and include an estimate of both perturbative and hadronization uncertainties. In contrast to previous studies, we find reasonable agreement between our results and predictions from both Pythia an…
The modifications of the angular and transverse momentum distributions of quarks and gluons inside a parton shower due to the presence of a medium are studied within an analytical description that reduces to the modified leading logarithmic approximation (MLLA) of QCD in the absence of medium.
The separation of quark and gluon initiated jets can be an important way to improve the sensitivity in searches for new physics or in measurements of Higgs boson properties. We present a simplified version of the shower deconstruction approach as a novel observable for quark-gluon tagging. Assuming topocluster-like objects as input, we compare our observable with energy correlation functions and find a favorable performance for a large variety of jet definitions. When applied to dark matter searches in mono-jet final states limitations from small signal-to-background ratios can be overcome. We…
Methodology of including QCD NLO corrections in the quark--gluon Monte Carlo shower is outlined. The work concentrates on two issues: (i) constructing leading order (LO) parton shower Monte Carlo from scratch, such that it rigorously extends collinear factorization into the exclusive (fully unintegrated) one which we call the Monte Carlo factorization scheme; (ii) introducing next-to-leading-order (NLO) corrections to the hard process in this new environment. The presented solution is designed to be extended to the full NLO level Monte Carlo, including NLO corrections not only in the hard proc…
We present predictions for the SM-Higgs-pair production channels of relevance at the LHC: gluon-gluon fusion, VBF, and top-pair, W, Z and single-top associated production. All these results are at the NLO accuracy in QCD, and matched to parton showers by means of the MC@NLO method; hence, they are fully differential. With the exception of the gluon-gluon fusion process, for which a special treatment is needed in order to improve upon the infinite-top-mass limit, our predictions are obtained in a fully automatic way within the publicly available MadGraph5_aMC@NLO framework. We show that for all…
We derive the distribution of energy and momentum transmitted from a primary fast parton and its medium-induced bremsstrahlung gluons to a thermalized quark-gluon plasma. Our calculation takes into account the important and thus far neglected effects of quantum interference between the resulting color currents. We use our result to obtain the rate at which energy is absorbed by the medium as a function of time and find that the rate is modified by the quantum interference between the primary parton and secondary gluons. This Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal type interference persists for time scales …
The multiple production processes of secondary hadrons in proton-antiproton scattering are divided into three types. The first type is a shower of secondary hadrons produced from gluon string decay, the second type is a shower of secondary hadrons produced from two quark strings decay and the third is a shower produced from three quark strings decay. At the same time there are only two types for proton-proton scattering - shower from gluon string and shower from two quark strings. These showers do not correspond to pomeron showers originating from cuts of one, two, three, ... pomerons. Multipl…
A sizable contribution to heavy quark production in high-energy hadronic and nuclear collisions comes from heavy quark-antiquark pair production from gluon splitting during the parton shower evolution. We investigate the effect of gluon-medium interaction on open heavy flavor spectra in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The interaction of hard gluons and heavy quarks with the hot QCD medium is simulated by utilizing a Langevin transport model that simultaneously incorporates contributions from collisional and radiative processes. It is found that while the gluon splitting channel has qu…
We address the problem of decomposing graphs in perturbative QCD into terms associated with particular regions. Motivated by asking how to incorporate next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections in parton-shower algorithms, we require that: (a) The integrand for the hard part is to be integrable even if the corrections are applied to a process that is not infrared and collinear safe. (b) The splitting between the terms should be defined gauge-invariantly. (c) The dependence on cut-offs should obey homogeneous evolution equations. In the context of one-gluon-emission graphs for deep inelastic s…
We present a new formalism for parton shower simulation of QCD jets, which incorporates the following features: invariance under boosts along jet axes, improved treatment of heavy quark fragmentation, angular-ordered evolution with soft gluon coherence, more accurate soft gluon angular distributions, and better coverage of phase space. It is implemented in the new HERWIG++ event generator.
I discuss the recent implementation of medium-modified splitting functions within the HERWIG angular-ordered parton shower algorithm and present a few results on transverse momentum, energy and angular distributions.
We present a calculation of the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to the hadroproduction process $gg\to ZZ \to e^+e^- μ^+ μ^-$, matched to the parton shower in the POWHEG framework. We take advantage of the POWHEG BOX tool for the implementation and rely on PYTHIA 8 for the showering and hadronization stages. We fully include $γ^*/Z$ interference effects, while also covering the single-resonant region. For this phenomenological study we focus on four lepton production as a signal process, neglecting all quark mass effects as well as the Higgs-mediated contributions, which are known t…
Photons from the interaction of a highly energetic jet with a thermal medium are an important contribution to the total photon yield measured in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions and also an important probe to study the medium degrees of freedom. Previously this contribution has often been computed in the context of a leading parton energy loss approximation. In this work, jet-medium interaction photons are instead estimated using a medium-modified shower evolution model, where the energy degradation due to vacuum radiation prior to medium formation, the virtuality evolution of intermedia…
We present a calculation of the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to gluon-induced electroweak gauge boson pair production, $gg \to ZZ$ and $gg \to W^+W^-$, matched to the PYTHIA8 parton shower in the POWHEG approach. The calculation consistently incorporates the continuum background, the Higgs-mediated $gg\to H^* \to VV$ process, and their interference. We consider leptonic decay modes of the massive vector bosons and retain offshell and non-resonant contributions. The processes considered are loop-induced at leading order and thus contain two-loop virtual contributions as well as l…
The computation of hard processes in hadronic collisions is a major success of perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD). In such processes, pQCD not only predicts the hard reaction itself, but also the subsequent evolution in terms of parton branching and radiation, leading to a parton shower and ultimately to an observable jet of hadrons. If the hard process occurs in a heavy-ion collision, a large part of this evolution takes place in the soft medium created along with the hard reaction. An observation of jets in heavy-ion collision thus allows a study of medium-modified QCD shower evoluti…
While the modification of jets by a medium as created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions is often thought of as a phenomenon affecting a hard near on-shell parton and hence treated as partonic energy loss, a more realistic view is to think of the medium effect as a relatively small correction to the Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) vacuum radiation pattern which reduces the initial high virtuality of hard partons and leads to the development of a shower. The uncertainty relation can be used to argue that a significant part of this shower is developed even before a medium can be formed. The …
We present a Monte Carlo simulation of the perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD) shower developing after a hard process embedded in a heavy-ion collision. The main assumption is that the cascade of branching partons traverses a medium which (consistent with standard radiative energy loss pictures) is characterized by a local transport coefficient qhat which measures the virtuality per unit length transferred to a parton which propagates in this medium. This increase in parton virtuality alters the development of the shower and in essence leads to extra induced radiation and hence a soften…
We investigate associated prompt photon and hadronic jet production at the LHC energies using the $k_T$-factorization approach. Our consideration is based on the $\mathcal O(αα_s^2)$ off-shell gluon-gluon fusion subprocess $g^*g^*\to γq\bar q$ and several subleading quark-initiated contributions from $\mathcal O(αα_s)$ and $\mathcal O(αα_s^2)$ subprocesses, taken into account in the conventional (collinear) QCD factorization. The transverse momentum dependent (or unintegrated) gluon densities in a proton are derived from Catani-Ciafaloni-Fiorani-Marchesini (CCFM) evolution equation. We achieve…
We study the medium modification of jets correlated with large transverse momentum photons at the LHC via a transport and perturbative QCD hybrid model which incorporates the contributions from both elastic collisions and radiative energy loss experienced by the parton showers. Calculations are performed for the modification of the photon-tagged jet yield, the photon-jet energy imbalance, and the azimuthal distribution of away-side jets. The modifications of photon-tagged jets with different $x_T = p_{T, J}/p_{T, γ}$ values are studied and they exhibit different centrality and jet cone size de…
The gluon condensate as a function of temperature and baryon density in a nucleon medium is obtained from an effective dilaton Lagrangian. It is shown that, at a normal nuclear density of nucleons, n_0 = 0.17 fm^{-3} the gluon condensate decreases by about 10%.
The total photoproduction cross section at ultra-high energies is obtained using a model based on QCD minijets and soft-gluon resummation and the ansatz that infrared gluons limit the rise of total cross sections. This cross section is introduced into the Monte Carlo system AIRES to simulate extended air-showers initiated by cosmic ray photons. The impact of the new photoproduction cross section on common shower observables, especially those related to muon production, is compared with previous results.
Collective properties of the quark-gluon medium induced by its polarization are described by macroscopic QCD equations. The parton currents traversing it lead to emission of Cherenkov gluons, the wake effect and the transition radiation. Comparison with experimental data of RHIC reveals large value of the chromopermittivity of the medium while cosmic ray data at higher energies (close to LHC) favor much smaller values. The dispersion equations show that the proper modes of the medium are unstable.
The properties of the quark-gluon medium observed in high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions are discussed. The main experimental facts about these collisions are briefly described and compared with data about proton-proton collisions. Both microscopic and macroscopic approaches to their description are reviewed. The chromodynamics of the quark-gluon medium at high energies is mainly considered. The energy loss of partons moving in this medium is treated. The principal conclusion is that the medium possesses some collective properties which are crucial for understanding the experimental observa…
We present a derivation of the medium-induced gluon radiation spectrum beyond the current limitation of soft gluon emission. Making use of the path integral approach to describe the propagation of high-energy particles inside a medium, we study the limiting case of a hard gluon emission. Analytical and numerical results are presented and discussed within the multiple soft scattering approximation. An ansatz interpolating between soft and hard gluon emissions is provided. The Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect is observed in the expected kinematic region.
Studying the pathlength dependence of high P_T hadron suppression in heavy-ion collisions by measuring the dependence of hard hadron production on the angle phi with the reaction plane in non-central collisions has so far been one of the most successful tools in constraining the microscopical picture of leading parton energy loss. With the imminent start of the LHC heavy-ion program and the possibility of full jet reconstruction, the focus has shifted to models which are capable of simulating full in-medium parton showers rather than tracing the leading parton only. Yet, on the level of single…
We discuss particle production in the high-energy, small-x limit of QCD where the gluon density of hadrons is expected to become nonperturbatively large. Strong modifications of the phase-space distribution of produced particles as compared to leading-twist models are predicted which reflect in the properties of cosmic ray induced air showers in the atmosphere. Assuming hadronic primaries, our results suggest a light composition near GZK cutoff energies. We also show that cosmic ray data discriminate among various QCD evolution scenarios for the rate of increase of the gluon density at small x…
Modified Altarelli-Parisi splitting functions were recenty proposed to model multi-parton radiation in a dense medium and describe jet quenching, one of most striking features of heavy-ion collisions. We implement medium-modified splitting functions in the HERWIG parton shower algorithm, which satisfies the angular ordering prescription, and present a few parton-level results, such as transverse momentum, angle and energy-fraction distributions, which exhibit remarkable medium-induced effects. We also comment on the comparison with respect to the results yielded by other implementations of med…
We investigate the effects of keeping the full color structure for parton emissions in parton showers for both LEP and LHC. This is done within the Herwig 7 dipole shower, and includes gluon emission, gluon splitting, initial state branching processes, as well as hadronization. The subleading Nc terms are included as color matrix element corrections to the splitting kernels by evolving an amplitude-level density operator and correcting the radiation pattern for each parton multiplicity, up to a fixed number of full color emissions, after which a standard leading color shower takes over. Our re…
The quark-gluon medium described by QCD equations is considered at high energies. Within the assumptions of the linear response theory the chromopermittivity of the medium is introduced and it is argued that it exceeds 1 at TeV energies. The dispersion equations show that the proper modes of the medium reveal instability and the parton currents traversing it induce the emission of Cherenkov gluons. Their distributions at LHC can differ from those typical for lower energies of RHIC because they are determined by the high energy dependence of the chromopermittivity while the latter ones arise du…
We study the evolution of an energetic jet which radiates gluons while propagating through a dense QCD medium modeled as a random distribution of color sources. Motivated by the heavy ion experimental program at the LHC, we focus on the medium-induced radiation of (relatively) soft gluons, which are abundantly emitted at large angles and thus can transport a small fraction of the jet energy far away from the jet axis. We perform a complete calculation of the medium-induced gluon branching in the regime where the gluons that take part in the branching undergo multiple soft scattering with the m…
The branching processes in parton showers are studied in perturbative QCD for both quark and gluon jets. The emphasis is on the nature of fluctuations of both the parton multiplicities and the spatial patterns of the final states. Effective measures of such fluctuations are calculated from the data obtained by Monte Carlo simulations. The entropy indices are used to characterize chaoticity. Both running and fixed couplings are considered. The fixed coupling case is used to study the onset of chaos. Implications of the results are discussed.
The equations of in-medium gluodynamics are proposed. Their classical lowest order solution is explicitly shown for a color charge moving with constant speed. For nuclear permittivity larger than 1 it describes the shock wave induced by emission of Cherenkov gluons. Specific effects at LHC energies are described and compared with Mach wave predictions.
The suppression of large transverse momentum hadrons in heavy-ion (A-A) collisions as compared to their scaled expectation from proton-proton collisions due to the interaction of hard partons with the hot and dense QCD medium in A-A collisions is experimentally a well established phenomenon. Focusing on leading hadrons produced in hard processes, the medium effect appears as energy loss. Beyond that, the question is how the lost energy is redistributed in the medium. With increased experimental statistics and most importantly the kinematic range of the LHC, studying the properties of full jets…
We consider heavy mesons with charm and bottom in nuclear medium. We construct the effective Lagrangian with axial-vector coupling including 1/M-corrections for the heavy meson mass $M$ by following the velocity-rearrangement invariance. As an application, we consider heavy mesons, $\bar{\mathrm{D}}$ and $\bar{\mathrm{D}}^{\ast}$ mesons for charm and $\mathrm{B}$ and $\mathrm{B}^{\ast}$ mesons for bottom, bound in nuclear matter, and we discuss their in-medium masses modified by the interaction with nucleons via pion exchanges including the 1/M-corrections. The mass modifications are affected …
Production of quarks and gluons in hadron collisions tests Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) over a wide range of energy. Models of QCD are implemented in event generators to simulate hadron collisions and evolution of quarks and gluons into jets of hadrons. PYTHIA8 uses the parton shower model for simulating particle collisions and is optimized using experimental observations. Recent measurements of event shape variables and jet cross-sections in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider have been used to optimize the parton shower model as used in PYTHIA8.
The "jet-quenching" interpretation of suppressed high-pT hadron production at RHIC implies that jet multiplicity distributions and jet-like particle correlations in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC differ strongly from those seen at e+e- or pp colliders. Here, we present an approach for describing the changes induced by the medium, which implements jet quenching as a probabilistic medium-modified parton shower, treating leading and subleading parton splittings on an equal footing. We show that the strong suppression of single inclusive hadron spectra measured in Au-Au collisions at RHIC im…
Multiple interactions between parton showers and the surrounding QCD matter are expected to underlie the strong medium-modifications of jet observables in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC and at the LHC. Here, we note that such jet-medium interactions alter generically and characteristically the color correlations in the parton shower. We characterize these effects in a color-differential calculation of the medium-induced gluon radiation spectrum to first and second order in opacity. By interfacing simple branching histories of medium-modified color flow with the Lund hadronizat…
Recently, the ALICE Collaboration reported an enhancement of the yield ratio of strange and multi-strange hadrons to charged pions as a function of multiplicity at mid-rapidity in proton-proton, proton-lead, lead-lead, and xenon-xenon scattering. ALICE observations provide a strong indication that a quark-gluon plasma is partly formed in high multiplicity events of both small and large colliding systems. Motivated by ALICE's results, we propose a new test for hadronic interaction models used for analyzing ultra-high-energy-cosmic-ray (UHECR) collisions with air nuclei. The test is grounded in …
The equations of in-medium gluodynamics are proposed. Their classical lowest order solution is explicitly shown for a color charge moving with constant speed. For nuclear permittivity larger than 1 it describes emission of Cherenkov gluons resembling results of classical electrodynamics. The choice of nuclear permittivity and Lorentz-invariance of the problem are discussed. Effects induced by the transversely and longitudinally moving (relative to the collision axis) partons at LHC energies are described.
Measurements of mesons containing charm or bottom quarks at high transverse momentum (P_T) constitute an interesting set of probes for the nature of the interaction of hard partons with a QCD medium as created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion (A-A) collisions. Not only can D and B mesons to a reasonable accuracy be assumed to represent the hadronization of a b or c quark after passage through the medium, i.e. they explicitly reflect quark-medium interaction, but also their interaction physics is expected to be different from light partons traversing a medium: The quark mass restricts radiation p…
The new precision era of jet quenching observables at both RHIC and the LHC calls for an improved and more precise description of in-medium gluon emissions. The development of new theoretical tools and analytical calculations to tackle this challenge has been hampered by the inability to include the effects of multiple scatterings with the medium using a realistic model for the parton-medium interactions. In this paper, we show how the analytical expressions for the full in-medium spectrum, including the resummation of all multiple scatterings, can be written in a form where the numerical eval…
The most commonly employed formalisms of radiative energy loss have been derived in the high- energy approximation. In its present form, it is reliable only for the medium modifications of inclusive particle spectra. Modifications to this formalism are expected to be important for less inclusive measurements. This is especially relevant for reconstructed jets in heavy-ion collisions, which are becoming available only recently. We present some ideas to overcome this limitation. Specifically, we show an implementation of radiative energy loss within a jet parton shower. This implementation has b…
We investigate the radiative break-up of a highly energetic quark or gluon in a high-temperature QCD plasma. Within an inertial range of momenta $T \ll ω\ll E$, where $E$ denotes the energy of the original hard parton (jet) and $T$ the temperature of of the medium, we find that, as a result of the turbulent nature of the underlying parton cascade, the quark to gluon ratio of the soft fragments tends to a universal constant value that is independent of the initial conditions. We discuss implications of this result to jet quenching physics and the problem of thermalization of the quark-gluon pla…
