The computation of hard processes in hadronic collisions is a major success of perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD). In such processes, pQCD not only predicts the hard reaction itself, but also the subsequent evolution in terms of parton branching and radiation, leading to a parton shower and ultimately to an observable jet of hadrons. If the hard process occurs in a heavy-ion collision, a large part of this evolution takes place in the soft medium created along with the hard reaction. An observation of jets in heavy-ion collision thus allows a study of medium-modified QCD shower evolution. In vacuum, Monte-Carlo (MC) simulations are well established tools to describe such showers. For jet studies in heavy-ion collisions, MC models for in-medium showers are currently being developed. However, the shower-medium interaction depends on the nature of the microscopic degrees of freedom of the medium created in a heavy-ion collision which is the very object one would like to investigate. This paper presents a study in comparison between three different possible implementations for the shower-medium interaction, two of them based on medium-induced pQCD radiation, one of them a medium-induced drag force, and shows for which observables differences between the three scenarios become visible. We find that while single hadron observables such as R_AA are incapable of differentiating between the scenarios, jet observables such as the longiudinal momentum spectrum of hadrons in the jet show the potential to do so.
I describe MiNNLO$_{\rm PS}$, a novel method to match NNLO QCD computations with Parton Showers, and present a selection of results for color-singlet production at the LHC.
We present a parton-shower matched NNLO QCD calculation for hadronic final state production in Deep Inelastic Scattering. The computation is based on the UNLOPS method and is implemented in the publicly available event generation framework SHERPA. Results are compared to measurements performed by the H1 collaboration.
We introduce a method for the separation of soft and collinear logarithms in QCD parton evolution at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^2)$ and at leading color. Using an implementation of the technique in the Dire parton shower, we analyze the numerical impact of genuine triple-collinear corrections from quark pair emission in $e^+e^-\to$ hadrons.
We present a consistent way of combining associated weak boson radiation in hard dijet events with hard QCD radiation in Drell-Yan-like scatterings. This integrates multiple tree-level calculations with vastly different cross sections, QCD- and electroweak parton shower resummation into a single framework. The new merging strategy is implemented in the PYTHIA event generator and predictions are confronted with LHC data. Improvements over the previous strategy are observed. Results of the new electroweak-improved merging at a future 100 TeV proton collider are also investigated.
We present an implementation of the full electroweak $H+2~\text{jets}$ production process at hadron colliders in the framework of the $\tt{POWHEG~BOX}$, a public tool for the matching of fixed-order perturbative calculations with parton shower generators. Our implementation allows for the simultaneous description of vector-boson fusion and Higgsstrahlung contributions. NLO-QCD and electroweak corrections are taken into account and matched to QCD and QED showers, respectively. The size of the fixed-order QCD and electroweak corrections is found to be moderate, but dependent on the considered se…

In this talk, I show the automated Monte Carlo simulations at next-to-leading order in QCD as well as its matching to parton showers are already feasible within the framework of \MG5aMC. I briefly overview the recent activities and take the colored particle production at the LHC as examples. The tools and the models are ready for using by both phenomenologists and experimentalists.
We present a selection of results from our recent study of $pp\to t\bar{t}W^\pm$ production matched to partons showers at NLO QCD at the LHC. Theoretical predictions are obtained at perturbative orders $\mathcal{O}(α_s^3α)$ and $\mathcal{O}(α_sα^3)$, where the different contributions are studied first separately at the inclusive level before being combined within a realistic two same-sign lepton signature. We investigate in detail uncertainties originating from missing higher-order corrections and from the parton-shower matching scheme employed.
We briefly summarize the Nagy-Soper parton shower and the MC@NLO-like matching scheme. Results obtained using HELAC-NLO framework in conjunction with DEDUCTOR for top quark pair production in association with one hard jet at the LHC are presented. A comparison of our results with other matching schemes and other parton showers is also discussed for various observables.
Detailed and precise background predictions are the backbone of large parts of high-energy collider phenomenology. This requires to embed precision QCD calculations into detailed event generators, to produce comprehensive software simulations. Only continued progress in this direction will allow us to exploit the full potential of measurements at the Large Hadron Collider, or at a future Electron-Ion Collider. This work presents a method to combine third-order QCD calculations for hadronic scattering processes with Monte-Carlo event generators, thus enabling a new generation of precision predi…
Precision QED \otimes QCD Resummation Theory for LHC Physics: IR-Improved Scheme for Parton Distributions, Kernels, Reduced Cross Sections with Shower/ME Matching
Parton showers are crucial components of high-energy physics calculations. Improving their modelling of QCD is an active research area since shower approximations are stumbling blocks for precision event generators. Naively, the interference between sub-dominant Standard-Model interactions and QCD can be of similar size to subleading QCD corrections. This article assesses the impact of QCD/QED interference effects in parton showers, by developing a sophisticated shower including QED, QCD at fixed color, and employing complete tree-level matrix element corrections for individual $N_C=3$ color c…
We present results for Higgs boson pair production with variations of the trilinear Higgs boson self-coupling at next-to-leading order (NLO) in QCD including the full top quark mass dependence. Differential results at 14 TeV are presented, and we discuss the implications of anomalous trilinear couplings as well as differences between the PYTHIA 8.2 and HERWIG 7.1 parton showers in combination with POWHEG. The implementation of the NLO QCD calculation with variable Higgs boson self-coupling is made publicly available in the POWHEG-BOX-V2 Monte Carlo framework. A simple method for using the new …
In this work we calculate and provide precise predictions for the signature that is typically exploited at the LHC for the measurement of t-channel single-top production: 1 lepton, 1 light jet, 1 b-jet, missing-ET and no additional jets or leptons. We apply the cuts that define the fiducial region and we take into account all the contributions to this signature; not only those from resonant t-channel single-top production. On the one hand, we calculate the complete-NLO corrections, i.e., all NLO effects of QCD and EW origin. On the other hand, we study in detail the impact of a QCD parton show…
We introduce the recently developed IR-improved DGLAP-CS theory into the showers in Pythia8, as this Monte Carlo event generator is in wide use at LHC. We show that, just as it was true in the IR-improved shower Monte Carlo Herwiri, which realizes the IR-improved DGLAP-CS theory in the Herwig6.5 environment, the soft limit in processes such as single heavy gauge boson production is now more physical in the IR-improved DGLAP-CS theory version of Pythia8. This opens the way to one's getting a comparison between the actual detector simulations for some of the LHC experiments between IR-improved a…
We present the first NLO QCD+EW predictions for Higgs boson production in association with a l nu or l+ l- pair plus zero or one jets at the LHC. Fixed-order NLO QCD+EW calculations are combined with a QCD+QED parton shower using the recently developed resonance-aware method in the POWHEG framework. Moreover, applying the improved MINLO technique to H l nu and H l+ l- production at NLO QCD+EW, we obtain predictions that are NLO accurate for observables with both zero or one resolved jet. This approach permits also to capture higher-order effects associated with the interplay of EW corrections …
We introduce photon and gluon propagators in which the scalar polarization component is subtracted systematically by making use of the BRST invariance of the off-shell vector boson created from physical on-shell states. The propagator has the light-cone gauge form, where the spacial component of the gauge vector points along the negative of the off-shell vector boson momentum. We call the gauge as parton-shower gauge, since in collinear configurations the absolute value squared of each Feynman amplitude reproduces all the singular behaviors of the corresponding parton shower in this gauge. We …
Vector boson fusion established itself as a highly reliable channel to probe the Higgs boson and an avenue to uncover new physics at the Large Hadron Collider. This channel provides the most stringent bound on Higgs' invisible decay branching ratio, where the current upper limits are significantly higher than the one expected in the Standard Model. It is remarkable that merely low-level calorimeter data from this characteristically simple process can improve this limit substantially by employing sophisticated deep-learning techniques. The construction of such neural networks seems to comprehen…
