Let $T$ be a tournament with $n$ vertices $v_1,\ldots,v_n$. The skew-adjacency matrix of $T$ is the $n\times n$ zero-diagonal matrix $S_T = [s_{ij}]$ in which $s_{ij}=-s_{ji}=1$ if $ v_i $ dominates $ v_j $. We define the determinant $\det(T)$ of $ T $ as the determinant of $ S_T $. It is well-known that $\det(T)=0$ if $n$ is odd and $\det(T)$ is the square of an odd integer if $n$ is even. Let $\mathcal{D}_k$ be the set of tournaments whose all subtournaments have determinant at most $ k^{2} $, where $k$ is a positive odd integer. The necessary and sufficient condition for $T\in \mathcal{D}_1$ or $T\in \mathcal{D}_3$ has been characterized in $2023$. In this paper, we characterize the set $\mathcal{D}_5$, obtain some properties of $\mathcal{D}_k$. Moreover, for any positive odd integer $k$, we give a construction of a tournament $T$ satisfying that $\det(T)=k^2$, and $T\in \mathcal{D}_k\backslash\mathcal{D}_{k-2}$ if $k\geq 3$, which implies $\mathcal{D}_k\backslash\mathcal{D}_{k-2}$ is not an empty set for $k\geq 3$.
A tournament is unimodular if the determinant of its skew-adjacency matrix is $1$. In this paper, we give some properties and constructions of unimodular tournaments. A unimodular tournament $T$ with skew-adjacency matrix $S$ is invertible if $S^{-1}$ is the skew-adjacency matrix of a tournament. A spectral characterization of invertible tournaments is given. Lastly, we show that every $n$-tournament can be embedded in a unimodular tournament by adding at most $n - \lfloor\log_2(n)\rfloor$ vertices.
We consider the transformation reversing all arcs of a subset $X$ of the vertex set of a tournament $T$. The \emph{index} of $T$, denoted by $i(T)$, is the smallest number of subsets that must be reversed to make $T$ acyclic. It turns out that critical tournaments and $(-1)$-critical tournaments can be defined in terms of inversions (at most two for the former, at most four for the latter). We interpret $i(T)$ as the minimum distance of $T$ to the transitive tournaments on the same vertex set, and we interpret the distance between two tournaments $T$ and $T'$ as the \emph{Boolean dimension} of…
Let $a, \ b \ (b \geq a)$ and $n \ (n \geq 2)$ be nonnegative integers and let $\mathcal{T}(a,b,n)$ be the set of such generalised tournaments, in which every pair of distinct players is connected at most with $b$, and at least with $a$ arcs. In \cite{Ivanyi2009} we gave a necessary and sufficient condition to decide whether a given sequence of nonnegative integers $D = (d_1, d_2,..., d_n)$ can be realized as the out-degree sequence of a $T \in \mathcal{T}(a,b,n)$. Extending the results of \cite{Ivanyi2009} we show that for any sequence of nonnegative integers $D$ there exist $f$ and $g$ such …
We study the Maker-Breaker tournament game played on the edge set of a given graph $G$. Two players, Maker and Breaker claim unclaimed edges of $G$ in turns, and Maker wins if by the end of the game she claims all the edges of a pre-defined goal tournament. Given a tournament $T_k$ on $k$ vertices, we determine the threshold bias for the $(1:b)$ $T_k$-tournament game on $K_n$. We also look at the $(1:1)$ $T_k$-tournament game played on the edge set of a random graph ${\mathcal{G}_{n,p}}$ and determine the threshold probability for Maker's win. We compare these games with the clique game and di…
Let ${\mathcal D}(n)$ be the maximal determinant for $n \times n$ $\{\pm 1\}$-matrices, and $\mathcal R(n) = {\mathcal D}(n)/n^{n/2}$ be the ratio of ${\mathcal D}(n)$ to the Hadamard upper bound. Using the probabilistic method, we prove new lower bounds on ${\mathcal D}(n)$ and $\mathcal R(n)$ in terms of $d = n-h$, where $h$ is the order of a Hadamard matrix and $h$ is maximal subject to $h \le n$. For example, $\mathcal R(n) > (πe/2)^{-d/2}$ if $1 \le d \le 3$, and $\mathcal R(n) > (πe/2)^{-d/2}(1 - d^2(π/(2h))^{1/2})$ if $d > 3$. By a recent result of Livinskyi, $d^2/h^{1/2} \to 0$ as $n \…
Let ${\mathcal D}^{k,l}(m,n)$ be the set of all the integer points in the transportation polytope of $kn\times ln$ matrices with row sums $lm$ and column sums $km$. In this paper we find the sharp lower bound on the tropical determinant over the set ${\mathcal D}^{k,l}(m,n)$. This integer piecewise-linear programming problem in arbitrary dimension turns out to be equivalent to an integer non-linear (in fact, quadratic) optimization problem in dimension two. We also compute the sharp upper bound on a modification of the tropical determinant, where the maximum over all the transversals in a matr…
Let $\mathcal{V}=\bigsqcup_{i=0}^n\mathcal{V}_i$ be the lattice of subspaces of the $n$-dimensional vector space over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and let $\mathcal{A}$ be the graded Gorenstein algebra defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ which has $\mathcal{V}$ as a $\mathbb{Q}$ basis. Let $F$ be the Macaulay dual generator for $\mathcal{A}$. We compute explicitly the Hessian determinant $|\frac{\partial ^2F}{\partial X_i \partial X_j}|$ evaluated at the point $X_1 = X_2 = \cdots = X_N=1$ and relate it to the determinant of the incidence matrix between $\mathcal{V}_1$ and $\mathcal{V}_{n-1}$. Our exp…
For a prime power $q$, we study the distribution of determinent of matrices with restricted entries over a finite field $\mathbbm{F}_q$ of $q$ elements. More precisely, let $N_d (\mathcal{A}; t)$ be the number of $d \times d$ matrices with entries in $\mathcal{A}$ having determinant $t$. We show that \[ N_d (\mathcal{A}; t) = (1 + o (1)) \frac{|\mathcal{A}|^{d^2}}{q}, \] if $|\mathcal{A}| = ω(q^{\frac{d}{2d-1}})$, $d\geqslant 4$. When $q$ is a prime and $\mathcal{A}$ is a symmetric interval $[-H,H]$, we get the same result for $d\geqslant 3$. This improves a result of Ahmadi and Shparlinski (2…
Let $D(n)$ be the maximal determinant for $n \times n$ $\{\pm 1\}$-matrices, and ${\mathcal R}(n) = D(n)/n^{n/2}$ be the ratio of $D(n)$ to the Hadamard upper bound. We give several new lower bounds on ${\mathcal R}(n)$ in terms of $d$, where $n = h+d$, $h$ is the order of a Hadamard matrix, and $h$ is maximal subject to $h \le n$. A relatively simple bound is \[{\mathcal R}(n) \ge \left(\frac{2}{πe}\right)^{d/2} \left(1 - d^2\left(\fracπ{2h}\right)^{1/2}\right) \;\text{ for all }\; n \ge 1.\] An asymptotically sharper bound is \[{\mathcal R}(n) \ge \left(\frac{2}{πe}\right)^{d/2} \exp\left(d\…
In this short note, we prove that for $\mathcal{E} \subset \mathbb{F}_q^d$ with $|\mathcal{E}| \geq q^{d-1} + O(q^2)$ then the set of determinants generated by $\mathcal{E}$ is $\mathbb{F}_q.$ This result is nearly optimal and generalizes the previous results of Vinh (2013) and Iosevich, Rudnev and Zhai (2015).
Let $G$ be a finite tree. For any matching $M$ of $G$, let $U(M)$ be the set of vertices uncovered by $M$. Let $\mathcal{M}_G$ be a uniform random maximum size matching of $G$. In this paper, we analyze the structure of $U(\mathcal{M}_G)$. We first show that $U(\mathcal{M}_G)$ is a determinantal process. We also show that for most vertices of $G$, the process $U(\mathcal{M}_G)$ in a small neighborhood of that vertex can be well approximated based on a somewhat larger neighborhood of the same vertex. Then we show that the normalized Shannon entropy of $U(\mathcal{M}_G)$ can be also well approxi…
Let $X$ be an $(m\times n)$-matrix of indeterminates, and let $J$ be the ideal generated by a set $\mathcal{S}$ of maximal minors of $X$. We construct the linear strand of the resolution of $J$. This linear strand is determined by the clique complex of the $m$-clutter corresponding to the set $\mathcal{S}$. As a consequence one obtains explicit formulas for the graded Betti numbers $β_{i,i+m}(J)$ for all $i\geq 0$. We also determine all sets $\mathcal{S}$ for which $J$ has a linear resolution.
We evaluate the Geiss-Leclerc-Schroer $ϕ$-map for shape modules over the preprojective algebra $Λ$ of type $\hat{A_1}$ in terms of matrix minors arising from the block-Toeplitz representation of the loop group $\SL_2(\mathcal{L})$. Conjecturally these minors are among the cluster variables for coordinate rings of unipotent cells within $\SL_2(\mathcal{L})$. In so doing we compute the Euler characteristic of any generalized flag variety attached to a shape module by counting standard tableaux of requisite shape and parity; alternatively by counting chess tableaux of requisite shape and content.
