Noise bias is a significant source of systematic error in weak gravitational lensing measurements that must be corrected to satisfy the stringent standards of modern imaging surveys in the era of precision cosmology. This paper reviews the analytical noise bias correction method and provides analytical derivations demonstrating that we can recover shear to its second order using the 'renoising' noise bias correction approach introduced by Metacalibration. We implement this analytical noise bias correction within the AnaCal shear estimation framework and propose several enhancements to the noise bias correction algorithm. We evaluate the improved AnaCal using simulations designed to replicate Rubin LSST imaging data. These simulations feature semi-realistic galaxies and stars, complete with representative distributions of magnitudes and Galactic spatial density. We conduct tests under various observational challenges, including cosmic rays, defective CCD columns, bright star saturation, bleed trails, and spatially variable point spread functions. Our results indicate a multiplicative bias in weak lensing shear recovery of less than a few tenths of a percent, meeting LSST DESC requirements without requiring calibration from external image simulations. Additionally, our algorithm achieves rapid processing, handling one galaxy in less than a millisecond.
Weak gravitational lensing is one of the key probes of cosmology. Cosmic shear surveys aimed at measuring the distribution of matter in the universe are currently being carried out (Pan-STARRS) or planned for the coming decade (DES, LSST, EUCLID, WFIRST). Crucial to the success of these surveys is the control of systematics. In this work a new method to constrain one such family of systematics, known as multiplicative bias, is proposed. This method exploits the cross-correlation between weak lensing measurements from galaxy surveys and the ones obtained from high resolution CMB experiments. Th…
Metacalibration is a state-of-the-art technique for measuring weak gravitational lensing shear from well-sampled galaxy images. We investigate the accuracy of shear measured with metacalibration from fitting elliptical Gaussians to undersampled galaxy images. In this case, metacalibration introduces aliasing effects leading to an ensemble multiplicative shear bias about 0.01 for Euclid, and even larger for the Roman Space Telescope, well exceeding the missions' requirements. We find that this aliasing bias can be mitigated by computing shapes from weighted moments with wider Gaussians as weigh…
We explore the weak lensing E- and B-mode shear signals of a field of galaxy clusters using both large scale structure N-body simulations and multi-color Suprime-cam & Hubble Space Telescope observations. Using the ray-traced and observed shears along with photometric redshift catalogs, we generate mass maps of the foreground overdensities by optimally filtering the tangential shear that they induce on background galaxies. We then develop and test a method to approximate the foreground structure as a superposition of NFW-like halos by locating these overdensities and determining their mass and…
Yes! Upcoming galaxy shear surveys have the potential to significantly improve our understanding of dark energy and neutrino mass if lensing systematics can be sufficiently controlled. The cross-correlations between the weak lensing shear, galaxy number counts from a galaxy redshift survey, and the CMB lensing convergence can be used to calibrate the shear multiplicative bias, one of the most challenging systematics in lensing surveys. These cross-correlations can significantly reduce the deleterious effects of the uncertainties in multiplicative bias.
We present results from a set of simulations designed to constrain the weak lensing shear calibration for the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey. These simulations include HSC observing conditions and galaxy images from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), with fully realistic galaxy morphologies and the impact of nearby galaxies included. We find that the inclusion of nearby galaxies in the images is critical to reproducing the observed distributions of galaxy sizes and magnitudes, due to the non-negligible fraction of unrecognized blends in ground-based data, even with the excellent typical seeing …
This is the third paper on the improvements of systematic errors in our weak lensing analysis using an elliptical weight function, called E-HOLICs. In the previous papers we have succeeded in avoiding error which depends on ellipticity of background image. In this paper, we investigate the systematic error which depends on signal to noise ratio of background image. We find that the origin of the error is the random count noise which comes from Poisson noise of sky counts. Random count noise makes additional moments and centroid shift error, and those 1st orders are canceled in averaging, but 2…
We present the optimal convergence and shear estimators for lensing reconstruction from the cosmic microwave background temperature field. This generalizes the deflection estimator, is sensitive to non-lensing modes, provides internal consistency checks, and is always at least as optimal. Previously, these estimators were only known in the squeezed limit. This paper decomposes convergence and shear fields into cosine and sine waves and the lensed correlation function is then Taylor expanded in the wave amplitudes. Maximizing the likelihood function gives the optimal estimators for the converge…
Dedicated 'Stage IV' observatories will soon observe the entire extragalactic sky, to measure the 'cosmic shear' distortion of galaxy shapes by weak gravitational lensing. To measure the apparent shapes of those galaxies, we present an improved version of the Fourier Power Function Shapelets (FPFS) shear measurement method. This now includes analytic corrections for sources of bias that plague all shape measurement algorithms: including noise bias (due to noise in nonlinear combinations of observable quantities) and selection bias (due to sheared galaxies being more or less likely to be detect…
We introduce the Generalised Lensing and Shear Spectra GLaSS code which is available for download from https://github.com/astro-informatics/GLaSS It is a fast and flexible public code, written in Python, that computes generalized spherical cosmic shear spectra. The commonly used tomographic and spherical Bessel lensing spectra come as built-in run-mode options. GLaSS is integrated into the Cosmosis modular cosmological pipeline package. We outline several computational choices that accelerate the computation of cosmic shear power spectra. Using GLaSS, we test whether the assumption that using …
Weak-lensing shear estimates show a troublesome dependence on the apparent brightness of the galaxies used to measure the ellipticity: In several studies, the amplitude of the inferred shear falls sharply with decreasing source significance. This dependence limits the overall ability of upcoming large weak-lensing surveys to constrain cosmological parameters. We seek to provide a concise overview of the impact of pixel noise on weak-lensing measurements, covering the entire path from noisy images to shear estimates. We show that there are at least three distinct layers, where pixel noise not o…
We infer gravitational lensing shear and convergence fields from galaxy ellipticity catalogs under a spatial process prior for the lensing potential. We demonstrate the performance of our algorithm with simulated Gaussian-distributed cosmological lensing shear maps and a reconstruction of the mass distribution of the merging galaxy cluster Abell 781 using galaxy ellipticities measured with the Deep Lens Survey. Given interim posterior samples of lensing shear or convergence fields on the sky, we describe an algorithm to infer cosmological parameters via lens field marginalization. In the most …
Shear estimation bias from galaxy detection and blending identification is now recognized as an issue for ongoing and future weak lensing surveys. Currently, the empirical approach to correcting for this bias involves numerically shearing every observed galaxy and rerunning the detection and selection process. In this work, we provide an analytical correction for this bias that is accurate to subpercent level and far simpler to use. With the interpretation that smoothed image pixel values and galaxy properties are projections of the image signal onto a set of basis functions, we analytically d…
We describe and test the pipeline used to measure the weak lensing shear signal from the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS). It includes a novel method of `self-calibration' that partially corrects for the effect of noise bias. We also discuss the `weight bias' that may arise in optimally-weighted measurements, and present a scheme to mitigate that bias. To study the residual biases arising from both galaxy selection and shear measurement, and to derive an empirical correction to reduce the shear biases to $\lesssim 1\%$, we create a suite of simulated images whose properties are close to those of the …
Weak gravitational lensing shear could be measured far more precisely if information about unlensed attributes of source galaxies were available. Disk galaxy velocity fields supply such information, at least in principle, with idealized models predicting orders of magnitude more Fisher information when velocity field observations are used to complement images. To test the level at which realistic features of disk galaxies (warps, bars, spiral arms, and other substructure) inject noise or bias into such shear measurements, we fit an idealized disk model, including shear, to unsheared galaxies i…
Only galaxies bright enough and large enough to be unambiguously identified and measured are included in galaxy surveys used to estimate cosmic shear. We demonstrate that because gravitational lensing can scatter galaxies across the brightness and size thresholds, cosmic shear experiments suffer from lensing bias. We calculate the effect on the shear power spectrum and show that - unless corrected for - it will lead analysts to cosmological parameters estimates that are biased at the 2-3σlevel in DETF Stage III experiments, such as the Dark Energy Survey.
We study how joint shear and magnification measurements improve the statistical precision of weak lensing mass calibration experiments, relative to standard shear-only analysis. For our magnification measurements, we consider not only the impact of lensing on the source density of galaxies, but also the apparent increase in source sizes. The combination of all three lensing probes - density, size, and shear - can improve the statistical precision of mass estimates by as much as 40% - 50%. This number is insensitive to survey assumptions, though it depends on the degree of knowledge of the para…
We constrain properties of cluster haloes by performing likelihood analysis using lensing shear and flexion data. We test our analysis using two mock cluster haloes: an isothermal ellipsoid (SIE) model and a more realistic elliptical Navarro-Frenk-White (eNFW) model. For both haloes, we find that flexion is more sensitive to the halo ellipticity than shear. The introduction of flexion information significantly improves the constraints on halo ellipticity, orientation and mass. We also point out that there is a degeneracy between the mass and the ellipticity of SIE models in the lensing signal.
It is usually assumed that the ellipticity power spectrum measured in weak lensing observations can be expressed as an integral over the underlying matter power spectrum. This is true at second order in the gravitational potential. We extend the standard calculation, constructing all corrections to fourth order in the gravitational potential. There are four types of corrections: corrections to the lensing shear due to multiple-deflections; corrections due to the fact that shape distortions probe the reduced shear $γ/(1-κ)$ rather than the shear itself; corrections associated with the non-linea…
Shear fields due to weak gravitational lensing have characteristic coherent patterns. We describe the topological defects in shear fields in terms of the curvature of the surface described by the lensing potential. A simple interpretation of the characteristic defects is given in terms of the the umbilical points of the potential surface produced by ellipsoidal halos. We show simulated lensing shear maps and point out the typical defect configurations. Finally, we show how statistical properties such as the abundance of defects can be expressed in terms of the correlation function of the lensi…
We investigate the performance of the Metacalibration shear calibration framework using simulated imaging data for the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (Roman) reference High-Latitude Imaging Survey (HLIS). The weak lensing program of the Roman mission requires the mean weak lensing shear estimate to be calibrated within about 0.03%. To reach this goal, we can test our calibration process with various simulations and ultimately isolate the sources of residual shear biases in order to improve our methods. In this work, we build on the Roman HLIS image simulation pipeline in Troxel et al. 2021 …
The high sensitivity of the new generation of radio telescopes such as the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will allow cosmological weak lensing measurements at radio wavelengths that are competitive with optical surveys. We present an adaptation to radio data of lensfit, a method for galaxy shape measurement originally developed and used for optical weak lensing surveys. This likelihood method uses an analytical galaxy model and makes a Bayesian marginalisation of the likelihood over uninteresting parameters. It has the feature of working directly in the visibility domain, which is the natural ap…
Highly precise weak lensing shear measurement is required for statistical weak gravitational lensing analysis such as cosmic shear measurement to achieve severe constrain on the cosmological parameters. For this purpose any systematic error in the measurement should be corrected. One of the main systematic error comes from Pixel noise which is Poisson noise of flux from atmosphere. We investigate how the pixel noise makes systematic error in shear measurement based on ERA method and develop the correction method. This method is tested by simulations with various conditions and it is confirmed …

We propose a new method for Point Spread Function (PSF) correction in weak gravitational lensing shear analysis using an artificial image with the same ellipticity as the lensed image. This avoids the systematic error associated with the approximation in PSF correction used in previous approaches. We test the new method with simulated objects which have Gaussian or Cersic profiles smeared by a Gaussian PSF, and confirm that there is no systematic error.
Current optical imaging surveys for cosmology are covering large areas of sky. To exploit the statistical power of these surveys for weak lensing measurements requires shape measurement methods with subpercent systematic errors. We introduce a new weak lensing shear measurement algorithm, Shear Nulling after PSF Gaussianisation (SNAPG), designed to avoid the noise biases that affect most other methods. SNAPG operates on images that have been convolved with a kernel that renders the Point Spread Function (PSF) a circular Gaussian, and uses weighted second moments of the sources. The response of…
We have developed a new technique called Direct Shear Mapping (DSM) to measure gravitational lensing shear directly from observations of a single background source. The technique assumes the velocity map of an un-lensed, stably-rotating galaxy will be rotationally symmetric. Lensing distorts the velocity map making it asymmetric. The degree of lensing can be inferred by determining the transformation required to restore axisymmetry. This technique is in contrast to traditional weak lensing methods, which require averaging an ensemble of background galaxy ellipticity measurements, to obtain a s…
Highly precise weak lensing shear measurement is required for statistical weak gravitational lensing analysis such as cosmic shear measurement to achieve severe constraint on the cosmological parameters. For this purpose, the accurate shape measurement of background galaxies is absolutely important in which any systematic error in the measurement should be carefully corrected. One of the main systematic error comes from photon noise which is Poisson noise of flux from the atmosphere(noise bias). We investigate how the photon noise makes a systematic error in shear measurement within the framew…
CMB lensing from current and upcoming wide-field CMB experiments such as AdvACT, SPT-3G and Simons Observatory relies heavily on temperature (vs. polarization). In this regime, foreground contamination to the temperature map produces significant lensing biases, which cannot be fully controlled by multi-frequency component separation, masking or bias hardening. In this letter, we split the standard CMB lensing quadratic estimator into a new set of optimal "multipole" estimators. On large scales, these multipole estimators reduce to the known magnification and shear estimators, and a new shear B…
Weak lensing has become an increasingly important tool in cosmology and the use of galaxy shapes to measure cosmic shear has become routine. The weak-lensing distortion tensor contains two other effects in addition to the two components of shear: the convergence and rotation. The rotation mode is not measurable using the standard cosmic shear estimators based on galaxy shapes, as there is no information on the original shapes of the images before they were lensed. Due to this, no estimator has been proposed for the rotation mode in cosmological weak-lensing surveys, and the rotation mode has n…
We have investigated, using both a theoretical and an empirical approach, the frequency of low redshift galaxy-galaxy lensing systems in which the signature of weak lensing might be directly detectable. We find good agreement between these two approaches. In order to make a theoretical estimate of the weak lensing shear, $γ$, for each galaxy in a catalogue, we have made an estimate of the asymptotic circular velocity from the stellar mass using three different approaches: from a simulation based relation, from an empirically-derived relation, and using the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation. Using…
Weak gravitational lensing has proven to be a powerful tool to map directly the distribution of dark matter in the Universe. The technique, currently used, relies on the accurate measurement of the gravitational shear that corresponds to the first-order distortion of the background galaxy images. More recently, a new technique has been introduced that relies on the accurate measurement of the gravitational flexion that corresponds to the second-order distortion of the background galaxy images. This technique should probe structures on smaller scales than that of a shear analysis. The goal of t…
We present a combined cosmic shear analysis of the modeling of line-of-sight distortions on strongly lensed extended arcs and galaxy shape measurements in the COSMOS field. We develop a framework to predict the covariance of strong lensing and galaxy shape measurements of cosmic shear on the basis of the small scale matter power-spectrum. The weak lensing measurement is performed using data from the COSMOS survey calibrated with a cloning scheme using the Ultra Fast Image Generator UFig (Berge 2013). The strong lensing analysis is performed by forward modeling the lensing arcs with a main lens…
The magnification of galaxies in modern galaxy surveys induces additional correlations in the cosmic shear, galaxy-galaxy lensing and clustering observables used in modern lensing "3x2pt" analyses, due to sample selection. In this paper, we emulate the magnification contribution to all three observables utilising the SLICS simulations suite, and test the sensitivity of the cosmological model, galaxy bias and redshift distribution calibration to un-modelled magnification in a Stage-IV-like survey using Monte-Carlo sampling. We find that magnification cannot be ignored in any single or combined …
We developed a new method that uses ellipticity defined by 0th order moments (0th-ellipticity) for weak gravitational lensing shear analysis. Although there is a strong correlation between the ellipticity calculated using this approach and the usual ellipticity defined by the 2nd order moment, the ellipticity calculated here has a higher signal-to-noise ratio because it is weighted to the central region of the image. These results were confirmed using data for Abell 1689 from the Subaru telescope. For shear analysis, we adopted the ellipticity of re-smeared artificial image (ERA) method for po…
Context. Weak gravitational lensing is a powerful probe of large-scale structure and cosmology. Most commonly, second-order correlations of observed galaxy ellipticities are expressed as a projection of the matter power spectrum, corresponding to the lowest-order approximation between the projected and 3d power spectrum. Aims. The dominant lensing-only contribution beyond the zero-order approximation is the reduced shear, which takes into account not only lensing-induced distortions but also isotropic magnification of galaxy images. This involves an integral over the matter bispectrum. We prov…
Weak lensing shear estimation typically results in per galaxy statistical errors significantly larger than the sought after gravitational signal of only a few percent. These statistical errors are mostly a result of shape-noise -- an estimation error due to the diverse (and a-priori unknown) morphology of individual background galaxies. These errors are inversely proportional to the limiting angular resolution at which localized objects, such as galaxy clusters, can be probed with weak lensing shear. In this work we report on our initial attempt to reduce statistical errors in weak lensing she…
Gravitational lensing induces significant errors in the measured distances to high-redshift standard candles and standard sirens such as type-Ia supernovae, gamma-ray bursts, and merging supermassive black hole binaries. There will therefore be a significant benefit from correcting for the lensing error by using independent and accurate estimates of the lensing magnification. We investigate how accurately the magnification can be inferred from convergence maps reconstructed from galaxy shear and flexion data. We employ ray-tracing through the Millennium Simulation to simulate lensing observati…
The next generation weak lensing surveys (i.e., LSST, Euclid and WFIRST) will require exquisite control over systematic effects. In this paper, we address shear calibration and present the most realistic forecast to date for LSST/Euclid/WFIRST and CMB lensing from a stage 4 CMB experiment (CMB S4). We use the CosmoLike code to simulate a joint analysis of all the two-point functions of galaxy density, galaxy shear and CMB lensing convergence. We include the full Gaussian and non-Gaussian covariances and explore the resulting joint likelihood with Monte Carlo Markov Chains. We constrain shear c…
We develop a new method to estimate gravitational shear by adopting an elliptical weight function to measure background galaxy images. In doing so, we introduce a new concept of "zero plane" which is an imaginal source plane where shapes of all sources are perfect circles, and regard the intrinsic shear as the result of an imaginal lensing distortion. This makes the relation between the observed shear, the intrinsic shear and lensing distortion more simple and thus higher-order calculation more easy. The elliptical weight function allows us to measure the mutiplemoment of shape of background g…
We demonstrate that the intrinsic alignment of galaxies with large-scale tidal fields sources an extra contribution to the recently-detected cross-correlation of galaxy shear and weak lensing of the microwave background. The extra term is the analogy of the 'GI' term in standard cosmic shear studies, and results in a reduction in the amplitude of the cross-correlation. We compute the intrinsic alignment contribution in linear and non-linear theory, and show that it can be at roughly the 15% level for the CFHT Stripe 82 redshift distribution, if the canonical amplitude of intrinsic alignments i…
Numerical studies on the imaging and caustic properties of the singular isothermal sphere (SIS) under a wide range of external shear (from 0.0 to 2.0) are presented. Using a direct inverse-mapping formula for this lens system (Lee 2003), we investigate various lensing properties under both a low (i.e., γ < 1.0), and a high (i.e., γ > 1.0) shear case: image separations, total or individual magnifications, flux ratios of 2-images, maximum number of images, and lensing cross-sections. We systematically analyze the effective lensing cross-sections of double-lensing and quad-lensing systems based o…
An excess up-scattering mass bias on a weak lensing cluster mass estimate is a statistical bias that an observed weak lensing mass ($M_{\rm obs}$) of a cluster of galaxies is, in a statistical sense, larger than its true mass ($M_{\rm true}$) because of a higher chance of up-scattering than that of down-scattering due to random noises in a weak lensing cluster shear profile. This non-symmetric scattering probability is caused by a monotonically decreasing cluster mass function with increasing mass. We examine this bias (defined by $b=M_{\rm obs}/M_{\rm true}$) in weak lensing shear-selected cl…
We explore the utility of Karhunen Loeve (KL) analysis in solving practical problems in the analysis of gravitational shear surveys. Shear catalogs from large-field weak lensing surveys will be subject to many systematic limitations, notably incomplete coverage and pixel-level masking due to foreground sources. We develop a method to use two dimensional KL eigenmodes of shear to interpolate noisy shear measurements across masked regions. We explore the results of this method with simulated shear catalogs, using statistics of high-convergence regions in the resulting map. We find that the KL pr…
We quantify the cosmological constraining power of the `lensing PDF' - the one-point probability density of weak lensing convergence maps - by modelling this statistic numerically with an emulator trained on $w$CDM cosmic shear simulations. After validating our methods on Gaussian and lognormal fields, we show that `multi-scale' PDFs - measured from maps with multiple levels of smoothing - offer considerable gains over two-point statistics, owing to their ability to extract non-Gaussian information: for a mock Stage-III survey, lensing PDFs yield 33\% tighter constraints on the clustering para…
Galaxy clusters are considered as excellent probes for cosmology. For that purpose, their mass needs to be measured and their structural properties needs to be understood. We propose a method for galaxy cluster mass reconstruction which combines information from strong lensing, weak lensing shear and flexion. We extend the weak lensing analysis to the inner parts of the cluster and, in particular, improve the resolution of substructure. We use simulations to show that the method recovers the mass density profiles of the cluster. We find that the weak lensing flexion is sensitive to substructur…
We improve the ERA(Ellipticity of Re-smeared Artificial image) method of PSF(Point Spread Function) correction in weak lensing shear analysis in order to treat realistic shape of galaxies and PSF. This is done by re-smearing PSF and the observed galaxy image smeared by a RSF(Re-Smearing Function), and allows us to use a new PSF with a simple shape and to correct PSF effect without any approximations and assumptions. We perform numerical test to show that the method applied for galaxies and PSF with some complicated shapes can correct PSF effect with systematic error less than 0.1%. We also app…
A systematic study of projection biases in the Weak Lensing analysis of cosmic shear and the combination of galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing
Weak gravitational lensing has the potential to constrain cosmological parameters to high precision. However, as shown by the Shear TEsting Programmes (STEP) and GRavitational lEnsing Accuracy Testing (GREAT) Challenges, measuring galaxy shears is a nontrivial task: various methods introduce different systematic biases which have to be accounted for. We investigate how pixel noise on the image affects the bias on shear estimates from a Maximum-Likelihood forward model-fitting approach using a sum of co-elliptical Sérsic profiles, in complement to the theoretical approach of an an associated pa…
We derive a new relation between cosological distances, valid in any (statistically) isotropic space-time and independent of cosmological parameters or even the validity of the field equation of General Relativity. In particular, this relation yields an equation between those distance ratios which are the geometrical factors determining the strength of the gravitational lensing effect of mass concentrations. Considering a combination of weak lensing shear ratios, based on lenses at two different redshifts, and sources at three different redshifts, we derive a relation between shear-ratio tests…

In this work we investigate the effect on weak-lensing shear and convergence measurements due to distortions from the Lorentz boost induced by our Galaxy's motion. While no ellipticity is induced in an image from the Lorentz boost to first order in beta = v/c, the image is magnified. This affects the inferred convergence at a 10 per cent level, and is most notable for low multipoles in the convergence power spectrum C κκ and for surveys with large sky coverage like LSST and DES. Experiments which image only small fractions of the sky and convergence power spectrum determinations at l > 5 can s…
In this paper we show how response function corrections to shear measurements (e.g. as required by Metacalibration) propagate into cosmic shear power spectra. We investigate a 2-sphere pixel (also known as HEALpixel') correction and a forward-modelling approach using simple Gaussian simulations. In the 2-sphere pixel-correction approach we find a free parameter that is the tolerated condition number of the local response matrices: if this is too large then this can cause an amplification of the shot noise power spectrum, if too small it can lead to a loss of area (and a possible selection bias…

When a luminous source is extended, its distortions by weak gravitational lensing are richer than a mere combination of magnification and shear. In a recent work, we proposed an elegant formalism based on complex analysis to describe and calculate such distortions. The present article further elaborates this finite-beam approach, and applies it to a realistic cosmological model. In particular, the cosmic correlations of image distortions beyond shear are predicted for the first time. These constitute new weak-lensing observables, sensitive to very-small-scale features of the distribution of ma…
We derive an estimator of weak gravitational lensing shear from background galaxy images that avoids noise-induced biases through a rigorous Bayesian treatment of the measurement. The derived shear estimator disposes with the assignment of ellipticities to individual galaxies that is typical of previous approaches to galaxy lensing. Shear estimates from the mean of the Bayesian posterior are unbiased in the limit of large number of background galaxies, regardless of the noise level on individual galaxies. The Bayesian formalism requires a prior describing the (noiseless) distribution of the ta…
