Existing multimodal-based human action recognition approaches are computationally intensive, limiting their deployment in real-time applications. In this work, we present a novel and efficient pose-driven attention-guided multimodal network (EPAM-Net) for action recognition in videos. Specifically, we propose eXpand temporal Shift (X-ShiftNet) convolutional architectures for RGB and pose streams to capture spatio-temporal features from RGB videos and their skeleton sequences. The X-ShiftNet tackles the high computational cost of the 3D CNNs by integrating the Temporal Shift Module (TSM) into an efficient 2D CNN, enabling efficient spatiotemporal learning. Then skeleton features are utilized to guide the visual network stream, focusing on keyframes and their salient spatial regions using the proposed spatial-temporal attention block. Finally, the predictions of the two streams are fused for final classification. The experimental results show that our method, with a significant reduction in floating-point operations (FLOPs), outperforms and competes with the state-of-the-art methods on NTU RGB-D 60, NTU RGB-D 120, PKU-MMD, and Toyota SmartHome datasets. The proposed EPAM-Net provides up to a 72.8x reduction in FLOPs and up to a 48.6x reduction in the number of network parameters. The code will be available at https://github.com/ahmed-nady/Multimodal-Action-Recognition.
This paper describes a network that captures multimodal correlations over arbitrary timestamps. The proposed scheme operates as a complementary, extended network over a multimodal convolutional neural network (CNN). Spatial and temporal streams are required for action recognition by a deep CNN, but overfitting reduction and fusing these two streams remain open problems. The existing fusion approach averages the two streams. Here we propose a correlation network with a Shannon fusion for learning a pre-trained CNN. A Long-range video may consist of spatiotemporal correlations over arbitrary tim…
Recognizing and localizing events in videos is a fundamental task for video understanding. Since events may occur in auditory and visual modalities, multimodal detailed perception is essential for complete scene comprehension. Most previous works attempted to analyze videos from a holistic perspective. However, they do not consider semantic information at multiple scales, which makes the model difficult to localize events in different lengths. In this paper, we present a Multimodal Pyramid Attentional Network (\textbf{MM-Pyramid}) for event localization. Specifically, we first propose the atte…

Facial expression recognition is a challenging task when neural network is applied to pattern recognition. In this paper, a neural network algorithm of facial expression recognition based on multimodal data fusion is proposed. The algorithm is based on the multimodal data, and it takes the facial image, the histogram of oriented gradient of the image and the facial landmarks as the input, and establishes CNN, LNN and HNN three sub neural netw…
Depth prediction is a critical problem in robotics applications especially autonomous driving. Generally, depth prediction based on binocular stereo matching and fusion of monocular image and laser point cloud are two mainstream methods. However, the former usually suffers from overfitting while building cost volume, and the latter has a limited generalization due to the lack of geometric constraint. To solve these problems, we propose a novel multimodal neural network, namely UAMD-Net, for dense depth completion based on fusion of binocular stereo matching and the weak constrain from the spar…

Tasks that rely on multi-modal information typically include a fusion module that combines information from different modalities. In this work, we develop a Refiner Fusion Network (ReFNet) that enables fusion modules to combine strong unimodal representation with strong multimodal representations. ReFNet combines the fusion network with a decoding/defusing module, which imposes a modality-centric responsibility condition. This approach addresses a big gap in existing multimodal fusion frameworks by ensuring that both unimodal and fused representations are strongly encoded in the latent fusion …

Multi-modal medical image segmentation plays an essential role in clinical diagnosis. It remains challenging as the input modalities are often not well-aligned spatially. Existing learning-based methods mainly consider sharing trainable layers across modalities and minimizing visual feature discrepancies. While the problem is often formulated as joint supervised feature learning, multiple-scale features and class-specific representation have not yet been explored. In this paper, we propose an affinity-guided fully convolutional network for multimodal image segmentation. To learn effective repr…

There has recently been growing interest in utilizing multimodal sensors to achieve robust lane line segmentation. The forward propagation is thus equal to the information transmission in the channels. Then, we can q…
Inspired by the fact that spreading and collecting information through the Internet becomes the norm, more and more people choose to post for-profit contents (images and texts) in social networks. Due to the difficulty of network censors, malicious marketing may be capable of harming society. Therefore, it is meaningful to detect marketing intentions online automatically. However, gaps between multimodal data make it difficult to fuse images and texts for content marketing detection. This paper proposes a novel multimodal fusion approach, aiming to produce best possible decisions by integrating information coming from multiple media. While most of the past multimodal approaches either work by projecting the features of different modalities into the same space, or by coordinating the representations of each modality through the use of constraints, our approach borrows from both visions. More specifically, assuming each modality can be processed by a separated deep convolutional network, allowing to take decisions independently from each modality, we introduce a central netw…

Applying network science approaches to investigate the functions and anatomy of the human brain is prevalent in modern medical imaging analysis. Due to the complex network topology, for an individual brain, mining a discriminative network representation from the multimodal brain networks is non-trivial. The recent success of deep learning techniques on graph-structured data suggests a new way to model the non-linear cross-modality relationship. However, current deep brain network methods either ignore the intrinsic graph topology or require a network basis shared within a group. To address the…

Multimodal patch matching addresses the problem of finding the correspondences between image patches from two different modalities, e.g. RGB vs sketch or RGB vs near-infrared. The comparison of patches of different modalities can be done by discovering the information common to both modalities (Siamese like approaches) or the modality-specific information (Pseudo-Siamese like approaches). We observed that none of these two scenarios is optimal. This motivates us to propose a three-stream architecture, dubbed as TS-Net, combining the benefits of the two. In addition, we show that adding extra c…

Learning an effective attention mechanism for multimodal data is important in many vision-and-language tasks that require a synergic understanding of both the visual and textual contents. Existing state-of-the-art approaches use co-attention models to associate each visual object (e.g., image region) with each textual object (e.g., query word). Despite the success of these co-attention models, they only model inter-modal interactions while neglecting intra-modal interactions. Here we propose a general `unified attention' model that simultaneously captures the intra- and inter-modal interaction…
