Although the physical origin of fast radio bursts (FRBs) remains unknown, magnetars are the most likely candidates. The polarization properties of FRBs offer crucial insights into their origins and radiation mechanisms. Significant circular polarization (CP) has been observed in some FRBs. CP may result from intrinsic radiation or propagation effects, both within and outside the magnetosphere. Recent observations indicate that polarization properties of FRB 20201124A can change over short timescales (about tens of milliseconds), challenging models that attribute CP to out-of-magnetosphere emission and propagation. Additionally, some magnetospheric radiation models predict that bursts with high CP produced by off-axis emission will be systematically fainter, which contradicts the observations. We propose that CP arises from magnetospheric propagation effects caused by relativistic plasma. We identify the conditions under which high CP occurs, finding it to be rare. Moreover, our model accounts for the more commonly observed low CP and the varying handedness of CP.
Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are bright millisecond radio bursts at cosmological distances. Only a small fraction of FRBs apparently repeat. Polarization, a fundamental property of electromagnetic signals, often carries critical information about the radiation processes, the environment, and the intervening medium of FRBs. Here we report circular polarization detections of two active repeating FRBs, namely FRBs 20121102A and 20190520B, with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope. We detect circular polarization in both active repeating FRBs, which increases the number of repeati…
The curvature radiation is applied to the explain the circular polarization of FRBs. Significant circular polarization is reported in both apparently non-repeating and repeating FRBs. Curvature radiation can produce significant circular polarization at the wing of the radiation beam. In the curvature radiation scenario, in order to see significant circular polarization in FRBs (1) more energetic bursts, (2) burst with electrons having higher Lorentz factor, (3) a slowly rotating neutron star at the centre are required. Different rotational period of the central neutron star may explain why som…
The mechanism that produces fast radio burst (FRB) emission is poorly understood. Targeted monitoring of repeating FRB sources provides the opportunity to fully characterize the emission properties in a manner impossible with one-off bursts. Here, we report observations of the source of FRB 20201124A, with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and the ultra-wideband low (UWL) receiver at the Parkes 64-m radio telescope (Murriyang). The source entered a period of emitting bright bursts during early 2021 April. We have detected 16 bursts from this source. One of the bursts det…
Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are extragalactic radio transients with millisecond duration and extremely high brightness temperature. Very recently, some highly circularly polarized bursts were found in a repeater, FRB 20201124A. The significant circular polarization might be produced by coherent curvature radiation by bunches with the line of sight (LOS) deviating from the bunch central trajectories. In this work, we carry out simulations to study the statistical properties of burst polarization within the framework of coherent curvature radiation by charged bunches in the neutron star magnetosphe…
Linear and circular polarizations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been detected during recent years. We adopt a simplified model to investigate GRB polarization characteristics in this paper. A compressed two-dimensional turbulent slab containing stochastic magnetic fields is considered, and jitter radiation can produce the linear polarization under this special magnetic field topology. Turbulent Faraday rotation measure (RM) of this slab makes strong wavelength-dependent depolarization. The jitter photons can also scatter with those magnetic clumps inside the turbulent slab, and a nonzero var…

Being the most extreme explosions in the universe, gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) provide a unique laboratory to study various plasma physics phenomena. The complex lightcurve and broad-band, non-thermal spectra indicate a very complicated system on the one hand, but on the other hand provide a wealth of information to study it. In this chapter I focus on recent progress in some of the key unsolved physical problems. These include: (1) Particle acceleration and magnetic field generation in shock waves; (2) Possible role of strong magnetic fields in accelerating the plasmas, and accelerating particles…

Radio signals are delayed when propagating through plasma. This type of delay is frequency-dependent and is usually used for estimating the projected number density of electrons along the line of sight, called the dispersion measure. The dense and clumpy distribution of plasma can cause refractive deflections of radio signals, analogous to lensing effects. Similar to gravitational lensing, there are two contributions to the time delay effect in plasma lensing: a geometric delay, due to increased path length of the signal, and a dispersive delay due to the change of speed of light in a plasma m…
A plausible scenario for the gamma ray and the hard x-ray burst in a strongly magnetized plasma, based on the collective plasma maser instability, is proposed. The physical parameters with which this scenario becomes relevant are estimated. The attractive feature of this scenario over the conventional cyclotron radiation theory is discussed.
Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are mysterious radio transients whose physical origin is still unknown. Within a few astronomical units near an FRB source, the electric field of the electromagnetic wave is so large that the electron oscillation velocity becomes relativistic, which makes the classical Thomson scattering theory and the linear plasma theory invalid. We discuss FRBs as strong waves interacting with the ambient medium, in terms of both electron motion properties and plasma properties. Several novel features are identified. 1. The cross section of Thomson scattering is significantly enhanc…
Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are millisecond-duration signals that are highly dispersed at distant galaxies. However, the physical origin of FRBs is still unknown. Coherent curvature emission by bunches, e.g., powered by starquakes, has already been proposed for repeating FRBs. It has the nature of understanding narrowband radiation exhibiting time--frequency drifting. Recently, a highly active FRB source, i.e., FRB 20201124A, was reported to enter a newly active episode and emit at least some highly circular-polarized bursts. In this study, we revisit the polarized FRB emission, particularly inve…
Fast radio busts (FRBs) can exhibit a wide variety of polarisation properties, not only between sources but also from burst to burst for a same one. In this work, we revisit the polarisation characters of coherent curvature radiation from a bulk of charged bunches in the magnetosphere of a highly magnetized neutron star. FRBs have been observed to have a variety of polarisation features, such as high levels of circular polarisation or a sign change of circular polarisation. High linear polarisation would appear when the line of sight is inside the emission beam (the on-beam geometry), whereas …
Fast spinning (e.g., sub-second) neutron star with ultra-strong magnetic fields (or so-called magnetar) is one of the promising origins of repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs). Here we discuss circularly polarised emissions produced by propagation effects in the magnetosphere of fast spinning magnetars. We argue that the polarisation-limiting region is well beyond the light cylinder, suggesting that wave mode coupling effects are unlikely to produce strong circular polarisation for fast spinning magnetars. Cyclotron absorption could be significant if the secondary plasma density is high. However…
The composition of the relativistic plasma produced in active galactic nuclei and ejected via powerful jets into the interstellar/intergalactic medium is still a major unsettled issue. It might be a positron-electron plasma in case the plasma was created by pair production in the intense photon fields near accreting super-massive black holes. Alternatively, it might be an electron-proton plasma in case magnetic fields lift and accelerate the thermal gas of accretion discs into relativistic jets as the recent detection of $γ$-rays from blazars indicates. Despite various attempts to unambiguousl…
During the process of collapse of a massive star, a cavity is generated between the central iron core and an outer stellar envelope. The dynamics of this cavity, filled with plasma and magnetic field of the rapidly rotating proto-magnetar's magnetosphere, is believed to be very relevant in understanding supernovae and gamma-ray bursts. The interactions of the pressurized conducting plasma and the magnetic fields are described by a set of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations with poloidal and toroidal plasma flows not aligned with magnetic fields. A sequence of MHD equilibria in response to the …
Plasma lenses in the host galaxies of fast radio bursts (FRBs) can strongly modulate FRB amplitudes for a wide range of distances, including the $\sim $ Gpc distance of the repeater FRB121102. To produce caustics, the lens' dispersion-measure depth (${\rm DM}_{\ell}$), scale size ($a$), and distance from the source ($d_{\rm sl}$) must satisfy ${\rm DM}_{\ell} d_{\rm sl} / a^2 \gtrsim 0.65~ {\rm pc^2 \ AU^{-2} \ cm^{-3}}$. Caustics produce strong magnifications ($\lesssim 10^2$) on short time scales ($\sim$ hours to days and perhaps shorter) along with narrow, epoch dependent spectral peaks (0.…
The main FRB event may leave behind a clump of relativistic plasma with high ``free energy'' density. As the plasma undergoes collisionless relaxation, it emits coherent electromagnetic waves. These electromagnetic waves may be observable as a fast radio afterglow, with decreasing frequency and intensity. We demonstrate the fast coherent afterglow in a numerical experiment. We tentatively predict the peak afterglow frequency decreasing with time as $ν\propto t^{-3/2}$.
There is growing evidence that a clear distinction between magnetars and radio pulsars may not exist, implying the population of neutron stars that exhibit both radio pulsations and bursting activities could be potentially large. In this situation, new insights into the burst mechanism could be gained by combining the temporal behavior of radio pulsations. We present a general model for radio suppression by relativistic $e^{\pm}$ plasma outflows at the onset of magnetar flares. A sudden ejection of magnetic energy into the magnetosphere would generate a fireball plasma, which is promptly drive…

Fast radio bursts are mysterious transient sources likely located at cosmological distances. The derived brightness temperatures exceed by many orders of magnitude the self-absorption limit of incoherent synchrotron radiation, implying the operation of a coherent emission process. We propose a radiation mechanism for fast radio bursts where the emission arises from collisionless Bremsstrahlung in strong plasma turbulence excited by relativistic electron beams. We discuss possible astrophysical scenarios in which this process might operate. The emitting region is a turbulent plasma hit by a rel…
The propagation of a relativistic electron-positron beam in a magnetized electron-ion plasma is studied, focusing on the polarization of the radiation generated in this case. Special emphasis is laid on investigating the polarization of the generated radiation for a range of beam-plasma parameters, transverse and longitudinal beam sizes, and the external magnetic fields. Our results not only help in understanding the high degrees of circular polarization observed in gamma-rays bursts but they also help in distinguishing the different modes associated with the filamentation dynamics of the pair…
We present Particle-in-Cell simulation results of relativistic shear flows for hybrid positron-electron-ion plasmas and compare to those for pure e+e- and pure e-ion plasmas. Among the three types of relativistic shear flows, we find that only hybrid shear flow is able to energize the electrons to form a high-energy spectral peak plus a hard power-law tail. Such electron spectra are needed to model the observational properties of gamma-ray bursts.
Stellar coronae have been invoked to explain the apparently extragalactic dispersion measures observed in fast radio bursts. This paper demonstrates that the suggested plasma densities would lead to deviations from the standard dispersion curve that are inconsistent with the data. The problem is then turned around and higher-order dispersion terms are connected to the moments of the density distribution along the line of sight. The deviations quantified in three observed bursts are analysed and a lower limit on the maximum electron density is obtained in one case, although with considerable un…
Nonlinear radio waves modulate the plasma, scatter on the modulations, and develop an intermittent power spectrum -- perhaps. Rudiments of theory, numerical simulations, and qualitative modeling of nonlinear scattering are presented. Nonlinear radio waves in electron-positron plasma are shown to be unstable, the instability growth rate is calculated. The long-term outcome of the instability is studied numerically; an intermittent power spectrum is found. The frequency coherence scale of the intermittent power spectrum is interpreted as a measure of the nonlinear scattering screen.
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are most probably powered by collimated relativistic outflows (jets) from accreting black holes at cosmological distances. Bright afterglows are produced when the outflow collides with the ambient medium. Afterglow polarization directly probes the magnetic properties of the jet, when measured minutes after the burst, and the geometric properties of the jet and the ambient medium when measured hours to days after the burst. High values of optical polarization detected minutes after burst in GRB 120308A indicate the presence of large-scale ordered magnetic fields originat…
Scenario of formation of fast radio bursts (FRBs) is proposed. Just like radio pulsars, sources of FRBs are magnetized neutron stars. Appearance of strong electric field in a magnetosphere of a neutron star is associated with close passage of a dense body near hot neutron star. For the repeating source FRB 121102, which has been observed in four series of bursts, the period of orbiting of the body is about 200 days. Thermal radiation from the surface of the star (temperature is of the order of $ 10^8 \, K $) causes evaporation and ionization of the matter of the dense body. Ionized gas (plasma…
A relativistic electron-positron beam propagating through a magnetized electron-ion plasma is shown to generate both circularly and linearly polarized synchrotron radiation. The degrees of circular and linear polarizations depend both on the density ratio of pair beam to background plasma and initial magnetization, and a maximum degree of circular polarization $\langle P_\textrm{circ}\rangle \approx 18\%$ is found to occur for a tenuous pair beam. We demonstrate that the generation of circularly polarized radiation is intrinsically linked to asymmetric energy dissipation of the pair beam durin…
It has been argued in previous papers that an ion-proton plasma is formed at the polar caps of neutron stars with positive polar-cap corotational charge density. The present paper does not offer a theory of the development of turbulence from the unstable Langmuir modes that grow in the outward accelerated plasma, but attempts to describe in qualitative terms the factors relevant to the emission of polarized radiation at frequencies below 1 - 10 GHz. The work of Karastergiou and Johnston is of particular importance in this respect because it demonstrates in high-resolution measurements of the p…
The number of identified Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) is increasing rapidly with current and future facilities. Strongly lensed FRBs are expected to be found as well, which can provide precise time delays and thus have rich applications in cosmology and fundamental physics. However, the radio signal of lensed FRBs will be deflected by plasma in lens galaxies in addition to gravity. Such deflections by both gravity and plasma will cause frequency dependent time delays, which are different from the dispersion delay and the geometric delay caused by gravitational lensing. Depending on the lensing and…
Fast Radio Bursts (FBRs) show highly different polarization properties: high/small RMs, high/small circular/linear fractions. We outline a complicated picture of polarization propagation in the inner parts of the magnetars' winds, at scales $\sim$ few to hundreds of light cylinder radii. The key point is the Faraday rotation of linear polarization in highly magnetized symmetric pair plasma, a $\propto B^2$ effect. Position angle (PA) rotation rate is maximal for propagation across the magnetic field and disappears only for parallel propagation. In the highly magnetized regime, $ω\ll ω_B$, it b…
The emission process of Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) remains unknown. We investigate whether the synchrotron maser emission from relativistic shocks in a magnetar wind can explain the observed FRB properties. We perform particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of perpendicular shocks in cold pair plasmas, checking our results for consistency among three PIC codes. We confirm that a linearly polarized X-mode wave is self-consistently generated by the shock and propagates back upstream as a precursor wave. We find that at magnetizations $σ\gtrsim 1$ (i.e., ratio of Poynting flux to particle energy flux of…
Faraday Rotation-Conversion is the simultaneous rotation of all three Stokes polarization parameters $Q$, $U$, $V$ as an electromagnetic wave propagates through a magnetized plasma. In this regime the Faraday plasma screen is characterized by more than just a Rotation Measure. We define the Conversion Measure that characterizes the wavelength-dependent conversion between the linear and circular polarization. In a cold plasma, the conversion occurs at the localized regions along the wave's path, where the large-scale magnetic field is perpendicular to the propagation direction. The number of th…
Nonlinear effects are crucial for the propagation of Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) near the source. We study the filamentation of FRBs in the relativistic winds of magnetars, which are commonly invoked as the most natural FRB progenitors. As a result of filamentation, the particle number density and the radiation intensity develop strong gradients along the direction of the wind magnetic field. A steady state is reached when the plasma pressure balances the ponderomotive force. In such a steady state, particles are confined into periodically spaced thin sheets, and electromagnetic waves propagate b…
The repeating FRB source, FRB 20201124A, was found to be highly active in March and April 2021. We observed the source with the Effelsberg 100-m radio telescope at 1.36 GHz on 9 April 2021 and detected 20 bursts. A downward drift in frequency over time is clearly seen from the majority of bursts in our sample. A structure-maximizing dispersion measure (DM) search on the multi-component bursts in our sample yields a DM of 411.6$\pm$0.6 pc/cm$^3$. We find that the rotation measure (RM) of the bursts varies around their mean value of -605 rad/m$^2$ with a standard deviation of 11.1 rad/m$^2$. Thi…
A parametric study of population inversions in relativistic plasmas through nonresonant interactions with Alfvén waves and their applications to Fast Radio Bursts
We discuss coherent free electron laser (FEL) operating during explosive reconnection events in magnetized pair plasma of magnetar magnetospheres. The model explains many salient features of Fast Radio Bursts/magnetars' radio emission: temporal coincidence of radio and high energy bursts, high efficiency of conversion of plasma kinetic energy into coherent radiation, presence of variable, narrow-band emission features drifting down in frequency, high degree of linear polarization. The model relies on magnetar-specific drifting $e^\pm$ plasma components (which generate wiggler field due to the …
We discuss how the model of magnetic reconnection in the presence of turbulence proposed inLazarian & Vishniac 1999 makes the reconnection rate independent either of resistivity or microscopic plasma effects, but determined entirely by the magnetic field line wandering induced by turbulence. We explain that the model accounts for both fast and slow regimes of reconnection and that this property naturally induces flares of reconnection in low beta plasma environments. In addition, we show that the model involves volume reconnection which can convert a substantial part of the energy into energet…
When fast radio burst (FRB) waves propagate through the local (< 1 pc) environment of the FRB source, electrons in the plasma undergo large-amplitude oscillations. The finite-amplitude effects cause the effective plasma frequency and cyclotron frequency to be dependent on the wave strength. The dispersion measure and rotation measure should therefore vary slightly from burst to burst for a repeating source, depending on the luminosity and frequency of the individual burst. Furthermore, free-free absorption of strong waves is suppressed due to the accelerated electrons' reduced energy exchange …
The Einstein's equivalence principle can be tested by using parameterized post-Newtonian parameters, of which the parameter $γ$ has been constrained by comparing the arrival times of photons with different energies. It has been constrained by a variety of astronomical transient events, such as gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), fast radio bursts as well as pulses of pulsars, with the most stringent constraint of $Δγ\lesssim 10^{-15}$. In this letter, we consider the arrival times of lights with different circular polarization. For a linearly polarized light, it is the combination of two circularly polar…

The generation of the circular polarization of Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) photons is discussed in this paper via their interactions with astroparticles in the presence or absence of background fields such as magnetic fields and non-commutative space time geometry. Solving quantum Boltzmann equation for GRB-photons as a photon ensemble, we discuss the generation of circular polarization (as Faraday conversion phase shift $Δϕ_{FC}$) of GRBs in the following cases: (i) intermediate interactions, i.e. the Compton scattering of GRBs in the galaxy cluster magnetic field and in the presence of non-commuta…
