In this paper, we study a certain type of Hurwitz numbers which count branched covers over the Riemann sphere admitting several branch points with fixed ramification types, one branch point with a fixed number of preimages, and one branch point with an arbitrary ramification type. We prove that the dependence of this kind of Hurwitz numbers on parts of the ramification type over the last point is a polynomial. Moreover, when expanding this polynomial in terms of products of binomial coefficients, we show that the coefficients are always non-negative integers via a pure combinatorial method. Our result generalizes the polynomiality in several models, including the one-part double Hurwitz numbers studied by Goulden-Jackson-Vakil, the one-part double Hurwitz numbers with completed cycles studied by Shadrin-Spitz-Zvonkine, and the generalized dessin counting.
We prove quasi-polynomiality for monotone and strictly monotone orbifold Hurwitz numbers. The second enumerative problem is also known as enumeration of a special kind of Grothendieck's dessins d'enfants or $r$-hypermaps. These statements answer positively two conjectures proposed by Do-Karev and Do-Manescu. We also apply the same method to the usual orbifold Hurwitz numbers and obtain a new proof of the quasi-polynomiality in this case. In the second part of the paper we show that the property of quasi-polynomiality is equivalent in all these three cases to the property that the $n$-point gen…
This article introduces mixed double Hurwitz numbers, which interpolate combinatorially between the classical double Hurwitz numbers studied by Okounkov and the monotone double Hurwitz numbers introduced recently by Goulden, Guay-Paquet and Novak. Generalizing a result of Okounkov, we prove that a certain generating series for the mixed double Hurwitz numbers solves the 2-Toda hierarchy of partial differential equations. We also prove that the mixed double Hurwitz numbers are piecewise polynomial, thereby generalizing a result of Goulden, Jackson and Vakil.
In this paper we present an example of a derivation of an ELSV-type formula using the methods of topological recursion. Namely, for orbifold Hurwitz numbers we give a new proof of the spectral curve topological recursion, in the sense of Chekhov, Eynard, and Orantin, where the main new step compared to the existing proofs is a direct combinatorial proof of their quasi-polynomiality. Spectral curve topological recursion leads to a formula for the orbifold Hurwitz numbers in terms of the intersection theory of the moduli space of curves, which, in this case, appears to coincide with a special ca…
We study rational double Hurwitz cycles, i.e. loci of marked rational stable curves admitting a map to the projective line with assigned ramification profiles over two fixed branch points. Generalizing the phenomenon observed for double Hurwitz numbers, such cycles are piecewise polynomial in the entries of the special ramification; the chambers of polynomiality and wall crossings have an explicit and "modular" description. A main goal of this paper is to simultaneously carry out this investigation for the corresponding objects in tropical geometry, underlining a precise combinatorial duality …
Hurwitz numbers count genus $g$, degree $d$ covers of the complex projective line with fixed branched locus and fixed ramification data. An equivalent description is given by factorisations in the symmetric group. Simple double Hurwitz numbers are a class of Hurwitz-type counts of specific interest. In recent years a related counting problem in the context of random matrix theory was introduced as so-called monotone Hurwitz numbers. These can be viewed as a desymmetrised version of the Hurwitz-problem. A combinatorial interpolation between simple and monotone double Hurwitz numbers was introdu…
Hurwitz numbers count branched covers of the Riemann sphere with specified ramification, or equivalently, transitive permutation factorizations in the symmetric group with specified cycle types. Monotone Hurwitz numbers count a restricted subset of these branched covers, related to the expansion of complete symmetric functions in the Jucys-Murphy elements, and have arisen in recent work on the the asymptotic expansion of the Harish-Chandra-Itzykson-Zuber integral. In previous work we gave an explicit formula for monotone Hurwitz numbers in genus zero. In this paper we consider monotone Hurwitz…
We give a bijective proof of Hurwitz formula for the number of simple branched coverings of the sphere by itself. Our approach extends to double Hurwitz numbers and yields new properties for them. In particular we prove for double Hurwitz numbers a conjecture of Kazarian and Zvonkine, and we give an expression that in a sense interpolates between two celebrated polynomiality properties: polynomiality in chambers for double Hurwitz numbers, and a new analog for almost simple genus 0 Hurwitz numbers of the polynomiality up to normalization of simple Hurwitz numbers of genus $g$. Some probabilist…
We give a short and direct proof of the $λ_g$-Conjecture. The approach is through the Ekedahl-Lando-Shapiro-Vainshtein theorem, which establishes the ``polynomiality'' of Hurwitz numbers, from which we pick off the lowest degree terms. The proof is independent of Gromov-Witten theory. We briefly describe the philosophy behind our general approach to intersection numbers and how it may be extended to other intersection number conjectures.
Double Hurwitz numbers count branched covers of the projective line with fixed branch points, with simple branching required over all but two points 0 and infinity, and the branching over 0 and infinity specified by partitions of the degree (with m and n parts respectively). Single Hurwitz numbers have a rich structure, explored by authors in many fields. The ELSV formula relates single Hurwitz numbers to intersection theory on the moduli space of curves, and has led to many consequences. We determine the structure of double Hurwitz numbers using geometry, algebra, and representation theory. O…
We derive an algorithm to produce explicit formulas for certain generating functions of double Hurwitz numbers. These formulas generalize a formula of Goulden, Jackson and Vakil for one part double Hurwitz numbers. Immediate consequences include a new proof that double Hurwitz numbers are piecewise polynomial, an understanding of the chamber structure and wall crossing for these polynomials, and a proof of the Goulden, Jackson and Vakil's Strong Piecewise Polynomiality conjecture. The method is a straightforward application of Okounkov's expression for double Hurwitz numbers in terms of operat…
Edge-contraction operations form an effective tool in various graph enumeration problems, such as counting Grothendieck's dessins d'enfants and simple and double Hurwitz numbers. These counting problems can be solved by a mechanism known as topological recursion, which is a mirror B-model corresponding to these counting problems. We show that for the case of orbifold Hurwitz numbers, the mirror objects, i.e., the spectral curve and the differential forms on it, are constructed solely from the edge-contraction operations of the counting problem in genus $0$ and one marked point. This forms a pa…
In this paper, we collect a number of facts about double Hurwitz numbers, where the simple branch points are replaced by their more general analogues --- completed (r+1)-cycles. In particular, we give a geometric interpretation of these generalised Hurwitz numbers and derive a cut-and-join operator for completed (r+1)-cycles. We also prove a strong piecewise polynomiality property in the sense of Goulden-Jackson-Vakil. In addition, we propose a conjectural ELSV/GJV-type formula, that is, an expression in terms of some intrinsic combinatorial constants that might be related to the intersection …
We present the multi-matrix models that are the generating functions for branched covers of the complex projective line ramified over $n$ fixed points $z_i$, $i=1,\dots,n$, (generalized Grotendieck's dessins d'enfants) of fixed genus, degree, and the ramification profiles at two points, $z_1$ and $z_n$. We take a sum over all possible ramifications at other $n-2$ points with the fixed length of the profile at $z_2$ and with the fixed total length of profiles at the remaining $n-3$ points. All these models belong to a class of hypergeometric Hurwitz models thus being tau functions of the Kadomt…
We study double Hurwitz numbers in genus zero counting the number of covers $\CP^1\to\CP^1$ with two branching points with a given branching behavior. By the recent result due to Goulden, Jackson and Vakil, these numbers are piecewise polynomials in the multiplicities of the preimages of the branching points. We describe the partition of the parameter space into polynomiality domains, called chambers, and provide an expression for the difference of two such polynomials for two neighboring chambers. Besides, we provide an explicit formula for the polynomial in a certain chamber called totally n…
We introduce a one-parameter deformation of the 2-Toda tau-function of (weighted) Hurwitz numbers, obtained by deforming Schur functions into Jack symmetric functions. We show that its coefficients are polynomials in the deformation parameter $b$ with nonnegative integer coefficients. These coefficients count generalized branched coverings of the sphere by an arbitrary surface, orientable or not, with an appropriate $b$-weighting that "measures" in some sense their non-orientability. Notable special cases include non-orientable dessins d'enfants for which we prove the most general result so fa…
Although powers of the Young-Jucys-Murphya elements X_i = (1 i) + ... +(i-1 i), i = 1, ..., n, in the symmetric group S_n acting on {1, ...,n} do not lie in the centre of the group algebra of S_n, we show that transitive powers, namely the sum of the contributions from elements that act transitively on {1, >...,n}, are central. We determine the coefficients, which we call star factorization numbers, that occur in the resolution of transitive powers with respect to the class basis of the centre of S_n, and show that they have a polynomiality property. These centrality and polynomiality properti…
Harer and Zagier proved a recursion to enumerate gluings of a $2d$-gon that result in an orientable genus $g$ surface, in their work on Euler characteristics of moduli spaces of curves. Analogous results have been discovered for other enumerative problems, so it is natural to pose the following question: how large is the family of problems for which these so-called 1-point recursions exist? In this paper, we prove the existence of 1-point recursions for a class of enumerative problems that have Schur function expansions. In particular, we recover the Harer-Zagier recursion, but our methodology…
Counts of curves in $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$ with fixed contact order with the toric boundary and satisfying point conditions can be determined with tropical methods by Mikhalkin. If we require that our curves intersect the zero- and infinity-section only in points of contact order $1$, but allow arbitrary contact order for the zero- and infinity-fiber, the corresponding numbers reveal beautiful structural properties such as piecewise polynomiality, similar to the case of double Hurwitz numbers counting covers of $\mathbb{P}^1$ with special ramification profiles over zero and infinity …
