We derive a compact expression for the second-order correlation function $g^{(2)} (0)$ of a quantum state in terms of its Wigner function, thereby establishing a direct link between $g^{(2)} (0)$ and the state's shape in phase space. We conduct an experiment that simultaneously measures $g^{(2)} (0)$ through direct photocounting and reconstructs the Wigner function via homodyne tomography. The results confirm our theoretical predictions.
We analyze two two-mode continuous variable separable states with the same marginal states. We adopt the definition of classicality in the form of well-defined positive Wigner function describing the state and find that although the states possess positive local Wigner functions, they exhibit negative Wigner functions for the global states. Using the negativity of Wigner function as an indicator of nonclassicality, we show that despite these states possess different negativities of the Wigner function, they do not reveal this difference as phase space nonclassicalities such as negativity of th…
Violation of modified Wigner inequality by means binary bipartite quantum system allows the discrimination between the quantum world and the classical local-realistic one, and also ensures the security of Ekert-like quantum key distribution protocol. In this paper we study both theoretically and experimentally the bounds of quantum correlation associated to the modified Wigner's inequality finding the optimal experimental configuration for its maximal violation. We also extend this analysis to the implementation of Ekert's protocol.
In this paper, we give a Schrödinger-type uncertainty relation using the Wigner-Yanase-Dyson skew information. In addition, we give Schrödinger-type uncertainty relation by use of a two-parameter extended correlation measure. Moreover, we give the further generalization for Schrödinger-type uncertainty relation by metric adjusted correlation measure. These results generalize our previous result in [Phys. Rev. A, Vol.82(2010), 034101].
Measurement-induced nonlocality (MIN) was proposed for measure the maximum global effect caused by locally invariant measurements. Similarly, the Measurement-induced nonbilocal correlation is a generalization of MIN can be used to measure the maximal global influence caused by the local measurement in the bilocal scenario. In this paper, we propose a new nonbilocal correlation measure based on the Wigner-Yanase skew information. The relationship between the MIN based on Wigner-Yanase skew information and our measure is discussed. We present an analytical expression of our measure for pure inpu…
In an experiment designed to overcome the loophole of observer dependent reality and satisfying the counterfactuality condition, we measured polarization correlations of 1S0 proton pairs produced in 12C(d,2He) and 1H(d,He) reactions in one setting. The results of these measurements are used to test the Bell and Wigner inequalties against the predictions of quantum mechanics.
In this manuscript, the behavior of the Wigner function of accelerated and non-accelerated two qubit system passing through different noisy channels is discussed. The decoherence of the initial quantum correlation due to the noisy channels and the acceleration process is investigated by means of Wigner function. The negative (positive) behavior of the Wigner function predicts the gain of the quantum (classical) correlations. Based on the upper and lower bounds of the Wigner function, the entangled initial state loses its quantum correlation due the acceleration process and the strengths of the…
We examine the effect of the decoherence-induced reduction of correlation length on a one-dimensional scattering problem by solving numerically the evolution equation for the Wigner function with decoherence proposed in [L. Barletti, G. Frosali and E. Giovannini, Journal of Computational and Theoretical Transport 47, 209 (2018)]. The numerical solution is achieved by the Splitting-Scheme algorithm. Three cases are examined, corresponding to a reflection-dominated regime, a transmission-dominated regime and an intermediate one. The dynamic evolution of the Wigner function is followed until the …
Based on the correspondence between Collins diffraction formula (optical Fresnel transform) and the transformation matrix element of a three-parameters two-mode squeezing operator in the entangled state representation (Opt. Lett. 31 (2006) 2622) we further explore the relationship between output field intensity determined by the Collins formula and the input field's probability distribution along an infinitely thin phase space strip both in spacial domain and frequency domain. The entangled Wigner function is introduced for recapitulating the result.
The presence of unique quantum correlations is the core of quantum information processing and general quantum theory. We address the fundamental question of how quantum correlations of a generic quantum system can be probed using correlation functions defined for quasiprobability distributions. In particular we discuss the possibility of probing the negativity of a quasiprobability by comparing moments of the Wigner function. We show that one must take at least the fourth moments to find the negativity in general and the eighth moments for states with a rotationally invariant Wigner function.
The Wigner function's behavior of accelerated and non-accelerated Greenberger Horne Zeilinger (GHZ) state is discussed. For the non-accelerated GHZ state, the minimum/maximum peaks of the Wigner function depends on the distribution's angles, where they are displayed regularly at fixed values of the distribution's angles. We show that, for the accelerated GHZ state, the minimum bounds increases as the acceleration increases. The increasing rate depends on the number of accelerated qubits. Due to the positivity/ negativity behavior of the Wigner function, one can use it as an indicators of the p…
We demonstrate that the Wigner function of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen state, though positive definite, provides a direct evidence of the nonlocal character of this state. The proof is based on an observation that the Wigner function describes correlations in the joint measurement of the phase space displaced parity operator.
A polarization correlation experiment with two maximally entangled photons created by spontaneous parametric down-conversion is studied in the Weyl-Wigner formalism, that reproduces the quantum predictions. An interpretation is proposed in terms of stochastic processes assuming that the quantum vacuum fields are real. This proves that local realism is compatible with the violation of Bell inequalities, thus rebutting the claim that local realism has been refuted by entangled photon experiments. Entanglement appears as a correlation between fluctuations of a signal field and vacuum fields.
$\textbf{Background:}$ The deuteron shows the essential features of short-range correlations found in all nuclei. Experimental observables related to short-range correlations are connected with the high-momentum components of one- and two-body momentum distributions. An intuitive understanding of short-range correlations is provided by the suppression of the two-body density in coordinate space at small distances. $\textbf{Purpose:}$ The Wigner function provides a quasi-probability distribution in phase-space that allows to investigate short-range correlations as a function of distance and rel…
We investigate quantum tunneling in smooth symmetric and asymmetric double-well potentials. Exact solutions for the ground and first excited states are used to study the dynamics. We introduce Wigner's quasi-probability distribution function to highlight and visualize the non-classical nature of spatial correlations arising in tunneling.
It is shown that Bell's proof of violation of local realism in phase space is incorrect. Using Bell's approach, a violation can be derived also for nonnegative Wigner distributions. The error is found to lie in the use of an unnormalizable Wigner function.
We studied one-dimensional systems formed by $N$ identical particles confined in a harmonic trap and subject to an inverse power law interaction potential $\sim|x|^{-d}$. The correlation properties of a Wigner molecule with the lowest energy are investigated in terms of their dependence on the number $N$ and the power $d$, including the limit as $d\rightarrow 0$. There are $N$-particle Wigner molecules with properties such that their correlations are mainly manifested in the $N$ lowest natural orbitals. The values of the control parameters of the system at which such states appear are identifi…
Non-Gaussian correlations in a pure state are inextricably linked with non-classical features, such as a non positive-definite Wigner function. In a commonly used simulation technique in ultracold atoms and quantum optics, known as the truncated Wigner method, the quantum dynamics is mapped to stochastic trajectories in phase space, governed by a positive approximation to the true Wigner distribution. The question thus arises: how accurate is this approach in predicting truly non-classical behaviour? In this article, we benchmark the ability of the truncated Wigner phase-space method to reprod…
It is not generally known, that the inequality that Bell derived using three random variables must be identically satisfied by any three corresponding data sets of plus and minus 1s that are writable on paper. This surprising fact is not immediately obvious from Bell's inequality derivation based on causal random variables, but follows immediately if the same mathematical operations are applied to finite data sets. For laboratory data, the inequality is identically satisfied as a fact of pure algebra, and its satisfaction is independent of whether the processes generating the data are local, non…
Quantum correlations of observables for two particle states have demonstrated the nonlocal character of the quantum mechanics. However nonlocality can be exhibited even for noncommuting observables of a single particle system. In this paper we show nonlocality of position-momentum correlations of a single particle in the double-slit experiment modeled by an initially correlated Gaussian wavepacket. The positivity or negativity of the Wigner function for the state of the particle at the detection screen is related with the $σ_{xp}$ covariances. A Bell's inequality is constructed from the Wigner…
Recent developments are (meta)reviewed in the applications of Wigner functions to describe the observed single particle spectra and two-particle Bose-Einstein (or Hanbury Brown -- Twiss) correlations in high energy particle and nuclear physics, with examples from hadron-proton and Pb + Pb collisions at CERN SPS.
A finite Hilbert space can be associated to a periodic phase space, that is, a torus. A finite subgroup of operators corresponding to reflections and translations on the torus form respectively the basis for the discrete Weyl representation, including the Wigner function, and for its Fourier conjugate, the chord representation. They are invariant under Clifford transformations and obey analogous product rules to the continuous representations, so allowing for the calculation of expectations and correlations for observables. We here import new identities from the continuum for products of pure …
We derive a new class of time-dependent Bell inequalities in Wigner form under the assumption of locality in the framework of Kolmogorov's probability theory. We consider violation of the obtained inequalities for three cases: spin correlations in an external magnetic field; oscillations of neutral pseudoscalar mesons; and decays of a pseudoscalar into a fermion-antifermion pair.
An experiment is proposed to show that after initial frequency and polarization selection, classical thermal light from two independent sources can be made path-polarization entangled. Such light will show new intensity-intensity correlations involving both path and polarization phases, formally similar to those for four-particle GHZ states. For fixed polarization phases, the correlations reduce to the Hanbury Brown-Twiss phase correlations. It is also shown that these classical correlations violate noncontextuality.
Effects of DM and KSEA interactions on entanglement, Fisher and Wigner-Yanase information correlations of two XYZ-Heisenberg-qubit states under a magnetic field
We compare the continuous and discrete truncated Wigner approximations of various spin models' dynamics to exact analytical and numerical solutions. We account for all components of spin-spin correlations on equal footing, facilitated by a recently introduced geometric correlation matrix visualization technique [R. Mukherjee {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 97}, 043606 (2018)]. We find that at modestly short times, the dominant error in both approximations is to substantially suppress spin correlations along one direction.
I conjecture that only those states of light whose Wigner function is positive are real states, and give arguments suggesting that this is not a serious restriction. Hence it follows that the Wigner formalism in quantum optics is capable of interpretation as a classical wave field with the addition of a zeropoint contribution. Thus entanglement between pairs of photons with a common origin occurs because the two light signals have amplitudes and phases, both below and above the zeropoint intensity level, which are correlated with each other.
The Wigner rotation angle for a particle in a circular motion in the Schwarzschild spacetime is obtained via the Fermi-Walker transport of spinors. Then, by applying the WKB approximation, a possible application of the Fermi-Walker transport of spinors in relativistic EPR correlations is discussed, where it is shown that the spins of the correlated particle undergo a precession in an analogous way to that obtained by Terashima and Ueda [H. Terashima and M. Ueda, Phys. Rev. A {\bf69}, 032113 (2004)] via the application of successive infinitesimal Lorentz transformations. Moreover, from the WKB …
We construct an explicit Wigner function for N-mode squeezed state. Based on a previous observation that the Wigner function describes correlations in the joint measurement of the phase-space displaced parity operator, we investigate the non-locality of multipartite entangled state by the violation of Zukowski-Brukner N-qubit Bell inequality. We find that quantum predictions for such squeezed state violate these inequalities by an amount that grows with the number N.
The different behaviour of first order interferences and second order correlations are investigated for the case of two coherently excited atoms. For intensity measurements this problem is equivalent to Young's double slit experiment and was investigated in an experiment by Eichmann et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 70, 2359 (1993)] and later analyzed in detail by Itano et al. [Phys. Rev. A 57, 4176 (1998)]. Our results show that in cases where the intensity interferences disappear the intensity-intensity correlations can display an interference pattern with a visibility of up to 100%. The contrast dep…
We investigate in a covariant manner the spin-induced non-geodesic motion of massive spin 1/2 particles in an arbitrary gravitational field for trajectories that are initially geodesic when spin is ignored. Using the WKB approximation for the wave function in curved spacetime, we compute the O(hbar) correction to the Wigner rotation of the spin 1/2 particle, whose O(1) contribution is zero on timelike geodesics. We develop conditions for the motion of observers in which the Wigner rotation is null. For the spherically symmetric Schwarzschild metric, we consider specific examples of particle mo…
Photon correlations and cross-correlations of light scattered by a regular structure of strongly driven atoms are investigated. At strong driving, the scattered light separates into distinct spectral bands, such that each band can be treated as independent, thus extending the set of observables. We focus on second-order intensity-intensity correlation functions in two- and multi-atom systems. We demonstrate that for a single two-photon detector as, e.g., in lithography, increasing the driving field intensity leads to an increased spatial resolution of the second-order two-atom interference pat…
The first step of quantum measurement procedure is known as \emph{premeasurement}, during when correlation between measuring system and measurement apparatus is established. One compelling non-classical correlation is entanglement, a useful resource for various quantum information theoretic protocols. Quantifying the amount of entanglement in the premeasurement state, therefore, seeks importance from practical ground and this is the central issue of the present paper. Interestingly, for a two-label quantum system we obtain that the amount of entanglement, measured in term of \emph{negativity},…
In this paper we show that the scattered field of a bichromatically driven V-type three-level atom exhibit asymmetry and large violation of classical bounds in amplitude-intensity correlations. These features result from the noncommutativity of amplitude and intensity field operators, and the strong non-Gaussian fluctuations in this system. The amplitude-intensity correlations of resonance fluorescence, with its large third-order fluctuations, describe the nonclassical features of the emitted field more accurately than the second-order measure related to squeezing. Spectra and variances of the…
A conditional protocol of transferring quantum-correlation in continuous variable regime was experimentally demonstrated. The quantum-correlation in two pairs of twin beams, each characterized by intensity-difference squeezing of 7.0 dB, was transferred to two initially independent idler beams. The quantum-correlation transfer resulted in intensity-difference squeezing of 4.0 dB between two idler beams. The dependence of preparation probability and transfer fidellity on the selection bandwidth was also studied.
We present the quantum theory of coherent Ising machines based on networks of degenerate optical parametric oscillators (DOPOs). In a simple model consisting of two coupled DOPOs, both positive-$P$ representation and truncated Wigner representation predict quantum correlation and inseparability between the two DOPOs in spite of the open-dissipative nature of the system. Here, we apply the truncated Wigner representation method to coherent Ising machines with thermal, vacuum, and squeezed reservoir fields. We find that the probability of finding the ground state of a one-dimensional Ising model…
A new and simple quantum key distribution scheme based on the quantum intensity correlation of optical twin beams and the directly local measurements of intensity noise of single optical beam is presented and experimentally demonstrated. Using the twin beams with the quantum intensity correlation of 5dB the effective bit rate of $2\times 10^7bits/s$ is completed. The noncloning of quantum systems and the sensitivity of the existing correlations to losses provide the physical mechamism for the security against eavesdropping. In the presented scheme the signal modulation and homodyne detection a…
A bipartite quantum state is tomographically faithful when it can be used as an input of a quantum operation acting on one of the two quantum systems, such that the joint output state carries a complete information about the operation itself. Tomographically faithful states are a necessary ingredient for tomography of quantum operations and for complete quantum calibration of measuring apparatuses. In this paper we provide a complete classification of such states for continuous variables in terms of the Wigner function of the state. For two-mode Gaussian states faithfulness simply resorts to c…
We calculate the intensity-field correlations in the light scattered by N cold atoms driven by a quasi-resonant laser field. Fundamental differences occur if the atomic state is an entangled single-excitation state or a coherent factorized state. We provide analytic expressions for the two-time field and intensity correlation functions for the timed Dicke state and the quasi-Bloch state. The comparison with multi-atom simulations shows good agreement between numerical and analytic solutions.
Motivated by the recent experiment [V.A. Sautenkov, Yu.V. Rostovtsev, and M.O. Scully, Phys. Rev. A 72, 065801 (2005)], we develop a theoretical model in which the field intensity fluctuations resulted from resonant interaction of a dense atomic medium with laser field having finite bandwidth. The intensity-intensity cross correlation between two circular polarized beams can be controlled by the applied external magnetic field. A smooth transition from perfect correlations to anti-correlations (at zero delay time) of the outgoing beams as a function of the magnetic field strength is observed. …

We consider properties of the measurement intensity $ρ$ of a random variable for which the probability density function represented by the corresponding Wigner function attains negative values on a part of the domain. We consider a simple economic interpretation of this problem. This model is used to present the applicability of the method to the analysis of the negative probability on markets where there are anomalies in the law of supply and demand (e.g. Giffen's goods). It turns out that the new conditions to optimize the intensity $ρ$ require a new strategy. We propose a strategy (so-calle…
We report measurements of the correlation between intensities of noise at different frequencies on a tunnel junction under ac excitation, which corresponds to two-mode intensity correlations in optics. We observe positive correlation, \emph{i.e.} photon bunching, which exist only for certain relations between the excitation frequency and the two detection frequencies, depending on the dc bias of the sample. We demonstrate that these correlations are proportional to the fourth cumulant of current fluctuations.

Negativity of the Wigner function is seen as a crucial resource for reaching a quantum computational advantage with continuous variable systems. However, these systems, while they allow for the deterministic generation of large entangle states, require an extra element such as photon subtraction to obtain such negativity. Photon subtraction is known to affect modes beyond the one where the photon is subtracted, an effect which is governed by the correlations of the state. In this manuscript, we build upon this effect to remotely prepare states with Wigner-negativity. More specifically, we show…
By means of a well-grounded mapping scheme linking Schwinger unitary operators and generators of the special unitary group $\mathrm{SU(N)}$, it is possible to establish a self-consistent theoretical framework for finite-dimensional discrete phase spaces which has the discrete $\mathrm{SU(N)}$ Wigner function as a legitimate by-product. In this paper, we apply these results with the aim of putting forth a detailed study on the discrete $\mathrm{SU(2)} \otimes \mathrm{SU(2)}$ and $\mathrm{SU(4)}$ Wigner functions, in straight connection with experiments involving, among other things, the tomogra…
We apply the Wigner formalism of quantum optics to study the role of the zeropoint field fluctuations in entanglement swapping produced via parametric down conversion. It is shown that the generation of mode entanglement between two initially non interacting photons is related to the quadruple correlation properties of the electromagnetic field, through the stochastic properties of the vacuum. The relationship between the process of transferring entanglement and the different zeropoint inputs at the nonlinear crystal and the Bell-state analyser is emphasized.
The Siegert relation relates the electric field and intensity correlations of light, under given assumptions. After a brief history of intensity correlations, we give a derivation of the relation. Then we present an experiment, which can be easily adapted for an undergraduate setup, and that allows measuring both field and intensity correlations at the same time, thus providing a direct test of the Siegert relation. As a conclusion, we discuss typical situations where the relation fails.
Non-Gaussian operations are essential to exploit the quantum advantages in optical continuous variable quantum information protocols. We focus on mode-selective photon addition and subtraction as experimentally promising processes to create multimode non-Gaussian states. Our approach is based on correlation functions, as is common in quantum statistical mechanics and condensed matter physics, mixed with quantum optics tools. We formulate an analytical expression of the Wigner function after subtraction or addition of a single photon, for arbitrarily many modes. It is used to demonstrate entang…
This paper shows that in intensity correlation measurements there will be clear and unambiguous signals that new-physics particles are, or aren't, parabosons. For a parabosonic field in a dominant single-mode, there is a diagonal P-representation in the "even and odd coherent states" basis. It is used to analyze zero-time-interval intensity correlations of parabosons in a maximum-entropic state. As the mean number of parabosons decreases, there is a monotonic reduction to (2/p) of the constant bosonic ``factor of two'' proportionality of the second-order versus the squared first-order intensit…
