Noise Intensity-Intensity Correlations and the Fourth Cumulant of Current Fluctuations

We report measurements of the correlation between intensities of noise at different frequencies on a tunnel junction under ac excitation, which corresponds to two-mode intensity correlations in optics. We observe positive correlation, \emph{i.e.} photon bunching, which exist only for certain relations between the excitation frequency and the two detection frequencies, depending on the dc bias of the sample. We demonstrate that these correlations are proportional to the fourth cumulant of current fluctuations.

How to detect the fourth order cumulant of electrical noise

It is proposed to measure the current noise generated in a mesoscopic conductor by macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in a current biased Josephson junction placed in parallel to the conductor. The theoretical description of this set-up takes into account the complete dynamics of detector and noise source. Explicit results are given for the specific case of current fluctuations in an oxide layer tunnel junction, and it is shown how the device allows to extract the fourth order cumulant of the noise from the MQT data for realistic experimental parameters.

Higher cumulants of voltage fluctuations in current-biased diffusive contacts

The third and fourth cumulants of voltage in a current-biased diffusive metal contact of resistance $R$ are calculated for arbitrary temperatures and voltages using the semiclassical cascade approach. The third cumulant equals $e^2R^3I/3$ at high temperatures and $4e^2R^3I/15$ at low temperatures, whereas the fourth cumulant equals $2e^2R^3T/3$ at high temperatures and $(34/105)e^3R^4I$ at low temperatures.

Cascade Boltzmann - Langevin approach to higher-order current correlations in diffusive metal contacts

The Boltzmann - Langevin approach is extended to calculations of third and fourth cumulants of current in diffusive-metal contacts. These cumulants result from indirect correlations between current fluctuations, which may be considered as "noise of noise". The calculated third cumulant coincides exactly with its quantum-mechanical value. The fourth cumulant tends to its quantum-mechanical value $-e^3I/105$ at high voltages and to a positive value $2e^2T/3R$ at V=0 changing its sign at $eV \sim 20T$.

Proposal for a cumulant-based Bell test for mesoscopic junctions

The creation and detection of entanglement in solid state electronics is of fundamental importance for quantum information processing. We prove that second-order quantum correlations can be always interpreted classically and propose a general test of entanglement based on the violation of a classically derived inequality for continuous variables by fourth-order quantum correlation functions. Our scheme provides a way to prove the existence of entanglement in a mesoscopic transport setup by measuring higher order cumulants without requiring the additional assumption of a single charge detection

Cascade approach to current fluctuations in a chaotic cavity

We propose a simple semiclassical method for calculating higher-order cumulants of current in multichannel mesoscopic conductors. To demonstrate its efficiency, we calculate the third and fourth cumulants of current for a chaotic cavity with multichannel leads of arbitrary transparency and compare the results with ensemble-averaged quantum-mechanical quantities. We also explain the discrepancy between the quantum-mechanical results and previous semiclassical calculations.

Fourth-order spin correlation function in the extended central spin model

Spin noise spectroscopy has developed into a very powerful tool to access the electron spin dynamics. Measurements of higher order noise correlations in a quantum dot with a finite bandwidth detector

We present measurements of the fourth and fifth cumulants of the distribution of transmitted charge in a tunable quantum dot. We investigate how the measured statistics is influenced by the finite bandwidth of the detector and by the finite measurement time. By including the detector when modeling the system, we use the theory of full counting statistics to calculate the noise levels for the combined system. The predictions of the finite-bandwidth model are in good agreement with measured data.

Statistics of Dynamics of Localized Waves

The measured distribution of the single-channel delay time of localized microwave radiation and its correlation with intensity differ sharply from the behavior of diffusive waves. The delay time is found to increase with intensity, while its variance is inversely proportional to the fourth root of the intensity. The distribution of the delay time weighted by the intensity is found to be a double-sided stretched exponential to the 1/3 power centered at zero. The correlation between dwell time and intensity provides a dynamical test of photon localization.
