It is known that the Fierz identities predict that the Gross-Neveu and Thirring models should be equivalent when describing systems composed of a single fermionic flavor, $N=1$. Here, we consider the planar version of both models within the framework of the optimized perturbation theory at the two-loop level, in order to verify if the predicted equivalence emerges explicitly when different temperature and density regimes are considered. At vanishing densities, our results indicate that both models indeed describe exactly the same thermodynamics, provided that $N=1$. However, at finite chemical potentials we find that the $N=1$ Fierz equivalence no longer holds. After examining the relevant free energies, we have identified the contributions which lead to this puzzling discrepancy. Finally, we discuss different frameworks in which this (so far open) problem could be further understood and eventually circumvented.
We use the linear $δ$ expansion, or optimized perturbation theory, to evaluate the effective potential for the two dimensional Gross-Neveu model at finite temperature and density obtaining analytical equations for the critical temperature, chemical potential and fermionic mass which include finite $N$ corrections. Our results seem to improve over the traditional large-N predictions.
The phase transition of the Gross-Neveu model with N fermions is investigated by means of a non-perturbative evolution equation for the scale dependence of the effective average action. The critical exponents and scaling amplitudes are calculated for various values of N in d=3. It is also explicitely verified that the Neveu-Yukawa model belongs to the same universality class as the Gross-Neveu model.
We confirm earlier hints that the conventional phase diagram of the discrete chiral Gross-Neveu model in the large N limit is deficient at non-zero chemical potential. We present the corrected phase diagram constructed in mean field theory. It has three different phases, including a kink-antikink crystal phase. All transitions are second order. The driving mechanism for the new structure of baryonic matter in the Gross-Neveu model is an Overhauser type instability with gap formation at the Fermi surface.
The 1/N expansion can be successfully used to calculate the Green functions of the two-dimensional O(2N) Gross - Neveu model. In parallel, the methods of analytic perturbation theory are also applied. Comparing the results of these two calculations at leading order, we report on the surprising agreement between them.
Within a variational calculation we investigate the role of baryons for the structure of dense matter in the Gross-Neveu model. We construct a trial ground state at finite baryon density which breaks translational invariance. Its scalar potential interpolates between widely spaced kinks and antikinks at low density and the value zero at infinite density. Its energy is lower than the one of the standard Fermi gas at all densities considered. This suggests that the discrete gamma_5 symmetry of the Gross-Neveu model does not get restored in a first order phase transition at finite density, at var…
Recent numerical calculations have shown that the ground state of the Gross-Neveu model at finite density is a crystal. Guided by these results, we can now present the analytical solution to this problem in terms of elliptic functions. The scalar potential is the superpotential of the non-relativistic Lame Hamiltonian. This model can also serve as analytically solvable toy model for a relativistic superconductor in the Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell phase.
The three-dimensional Gross-Neveu model in $R^{1} \times S^{2}$ spacetime is considered at finite particles number density. We evaluate an effective potential of the composite scalar field $σ(x)$, which is expressed in terms of a scalar curvature $R$ and nonzero chemical potential $μ$. We then derive the critical values of $(R,μ)$ at which the system undergoes the first order phase transition from the phase with broken chiral invariance to the symmetric phase.
In this letter we study some relevant physical parameters of the massless Gross-Neveu model in a finite spatial dimension for different boundary conditions. It is considered the standard homogeneous Hartree Fock solution using zeta function regularization for the study the mass dynamically generated and its respective beta function. It is found that the beta function does not depend on the Boundary conditions. On the other hand, it was considered the Casimir effect of the resulting effective theory. There appears a complex picture where the sign of the generated forces depends on the parameter…
The Gross-Neveu model in 1+1 dimensions is generalized to the case of different scalar and pseudoscalar coupling constants. This enables us to interpolate smoothly between the standard massless Gross-Neveu models with either discrete or continuous chiral symmetry. We present the solution of the generalized model in the large N limit including the vacuum, fermion-antifermion scattering and bound states, solitonic baryons with fractional baryon number and the full phase diagram at finite temperature and chemical potential.
The critical and the tricritical exponents of the Gross-Neveu model are calculated in the large-$N_f$ limit. Our results indicate that these exponents are given by the mean-field values.
We study the phase diagram of the 1+1 dimensional Gross-Neveu model at finite number of fermion flavors using lattice field theory. Numerical results are presented, which indicate the existence of an inhomogeneous phase, where the chiral condensate is a spatially oscillating function.
Guided by a study of kink-antikink scattering in the Gross-Neveu model and other known solutions of the Hartree-Fock approach of a particularly simple type, we demonstrate a quantitative relationship between three different problems: Quantized 1+1-dimensional fermions in the large N limit, solitons of the classical sinh-Gordon equation and classical strings moving in 3-dimensional anti de Sitter space. Aside from throwing light on the relationship between quantum field theory and classical physics, this points to the full solvability of the dynamical N-kink-antikink problem in the Gross-Neveu …
In the framework of a (2+1)-dimensional P-even massive Gross-Neveu model, an external magnetic field is shown to induce a parity breaking first order phase transition. Possibility of applying the results obtained to description of magnetic phase transitions in high-temperature superconductors is discussed.
The divergence of the axial current is used to relate the spatial derivative of the fermion density to the bare fermion mass and scalar/pseudoscalar condensates in 1+1 dimensional Gross-Neveu models. This serves as a novel test of known results, to explain simple features of the continuous chiral model and to resolve a conflict concerning the assignment of baryon number to certain multi-fermion bound states.
We show how to perform systematically improvable variational calculations in the $O(2N)$ Gross-Neveu model for generic $N$, in such a way that all infinities usually plaguing such calculations are accounted for in a way compatible with the perturbative renormalization group . The final point is a general framework for the calculation of non-perturbative quantities like condensates, masses etc$\ldots$, in an asymptotically free field theory. For the Gross-Neveu model, the numerical results obtained from a ``2-loop'' down to low values of $N$.
The phase diagram of the massive chiral Gross-Neveu model (the 1+1-dimensional Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model at large N) is investigated in the vicinity of the tricritical point. Using the derivative expansion, the grand canonical potential is cast into the form of a Ginzburg-Landau effective action. Minimization of this action by variational and numerical methods reveals both 1st and 2nd order phase transitions to a chiral crystal phase, separated by a tricritical line. These findings are contrasted to the massive Gross-Neveu model with discrete chiral symmetry where only 2nd order transitions hav…
As has long been known, it is energetically favorable for massive fermions to deform the homogeneous vacuum around them, giving rise to extended bag-like objects. We study this phenomenon non-perturbatively in a model field theory, the $1+1$ dimensional Massive Gross-Neveu model, in the large $N$ limit. We prove that the bags in this model are necessarily time dependent. We calculate their masses variationally and demonstrate their stability. We find a non-analytic behavior in these masses as we approach the standard massless Gross-Neveu model and argue that this behavior is caused by the kink…
In the limit of a large number of flavors, the ground state of the chiral Gross-Neveu model at finite fermion density exhibits a spatially periodic mean field in the form of the chiral spiral, thereby breaking translational invariance. Here we show that the ground state of the same model at finite fermion current density gives rise to a mean field which is periodic in time, a temporal chiral spiral. Since the current density is the same as axial charge density in two dimensions and axial charge is conserved, this may serve as an example of a time crystal. More specifically, as mean field theor…
We study two-dimensional, large $N$ field theoretic models (Gross-Neveu model, 't Hooft model) at finite baryon density near the chiral limit. The same mechanism which leads to massless baryons in these models induces a breakdown of translational invariance at any finite density. In the chiral limit baryonic matter is characterized by a spatially varying chiral angle with a wave number depending only on the density. For small bare quark masses a sine-Gordon kink chain is obtained which may be regarded as simplest realization of the Skyrme crystal for nuclear matter. Characteristic differences …
Magnetic catalysis of the chiral symmetry breaking and other magnetic properties of the (2+1)-dimensional Gross--Neveu model are studied taking into account the Zeeman interaction of spin-1/2 quasi-particles (electrons) with tilted (with respect to a system plane) external magnetic field. The Zeeman interaction is proportional to magnetic moment $μ_B$ of electrons. It is shown that at $μ_B\ne 0$ the magnetic catalysis effect is drastically changed in comparison with the $μ_B= 0$ case.
We find the general solution to the time-dependent Hartree-Fock problem for the Gross-Neveu models, with both discrete (GN2) and continuous (NJL2) chiral symmetry. We find new multi-baryon, multi-breather and twisted breather solutions, and show that all GN2 baryons and breathers are composed of constituent twisted kinks of the NJL2 model.
Analyzed is the effective potential of D-dimensional thermodynamic Gross-Neveu model (defined by large-N leading order, $2\leq D<4$) under constant electromagnetic field ($\vec{E}\cdot\vec{B}=0$). The potential is derived from a thermal analogy of the worldline formalism. In the magnetic case, the potential is expressed in terms of a discretized momentum sum instead of a continuum momentum integral, and it reproduces known critical values of $μ$ and $T$ in the continuum limit. In the electric case, chiral symmetry is restored at finite $T$ (with arbitrary $μ$) against instability of fermion va…
The massive Gross-Neveu model is solved in the large N limit at finite temperature and chemical potential. The phase diagram features a kink-antikink crystal phase which was missed in previous works. Translated into the framework of condensed matter physics our results generalize the bipolaron lattice in non-degenerate conducting polymers to finite temperature.
Due to integrability, baryon-baryon scattering in the massless Gross-Neveu model at large N features only forward elastic scattering. A bare mass term breaks integrability and is therefore expected to induce backward elastic scattering as well as inelastic reactions. We confirm these expectations by a study of baryon-baryon scattering in the massive Gross-Neveu model near the non-relativistic limit. This restriction enables us to solve the time-dependent Hartree-Fock equations with controlled approximations, using a combination of analytical methods from an effective field theory and the numer…
We show that the coexisting phase of quark-antiquark and diquark condensed phases is absent in the cold quark matter in the $2 + 1$ dimensional extended Gross-Neveu model, which is in sharp contrast to the case of $3 + 1$ dimensional Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model.
Unconventional way of handling the perturbative series is presented with the help of Heaviside transformation with respect to the mass. We apply Heaviside transform to the effective potential in the massive Gross-Neveu model and carry out perturbative approximation of the massless potential by dealing with the resulting Heaviside function. We find that accurate values of the dynamical mass can be obtained from the Heaviside function already at finite orders where just the several of diagrams are incorporated. We prove that our approximants converges to the exact massless potential in the infin…
The breather is a vibrating multifermion bound state of the massless Gross-Neveu model, originally found by Dashen, Hasslacher and Neveu in the large N limit. We exhibit the salient features of this state and confirm that it solves the relativistic time-dependent Hartree-Fock equations. We then solve the scattering problem of two breathers with arbitrary internal parameters and velocities, generalizing an ansatz recently developed for the baryon-baryon scattering problem in the same model. The exact analytical solution is given and illustrated with a few examples.
The phase diagram of the massive chiral Gross-Neveu model (the massive Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in 1+1 dimensions) is constructed. In the large N limit, the Hartree-Fock approach can be used. We find numerically a chiral crystal phase separated from a massive Fermi gas phase by a 1st order transition. Using perturbation theory, we also construct the critical sheet where the homogeneous phase becomes unstable in a 2nd order transition. A tricritical curve is located. The phase diagram is mapped out as a function of fermion mass, chemical potential and temperature and compared with the one of th…
During the last few years, the phase diagram of the large N Gross-Neveu model in 1+1 dimensions at finite temperature and chemical potential has undergone a major revision. Here we present a streamlined account of this development, collecting the most important results. Quasi-one-dimensional condensed matter systems like conducting polymers provide real physical systems which can be approximately described by the Gross-Neveu model and have played some role in establishing its phase structure. The kink-antikink phase found at low temperatures is closely related to inhomogeneous superconductors …
The Gross-Neveu model with ${\rm U}_L(N_f)\times{\rm U}_R(N_f)$ chiral symmetry is reconsidered in the large $N_c$ limit. The known analytical solution for the time dependent interaction of any number of twisted kinks and breathers is cast into a more revealing form. The ($x,t$)-dependent factors are isolated from constant coefficients and twist matrices. These latter generalize the twist phases of the single flavor model. The crucial tool is an identity for the inverse of a sum of two square matrices, derived from the known formula for the determinant of such a sum.
We investigate the phase structure of the 2+1-dimensional Gross-Neveu model in the large-Nf limit, where Nf denotes the number of fermion flavors. We discuss two different fermion representations and their implication on the interpretation of a discrete symmetry of the action. We present numerical results, which indicate the existence of an inhomogeneous phase similar as in the 1+1-dimensional Gross-Neveu model.
The scattering of two Dashen-Hasslacher-Neveu (DHN) baryons in the large N Gross-Neveu model is solved exactly using the relativistic, time-dependent Hartree-Fock approach. Unlike the special case of kink-antikink scattering, the scattering of DHN baryons is sensitive to the back-reaction of the fermions bound inside the baryons. Correspondingly the solution is much more complicated than the kink-antikink scattering solutions, which can be expressed in terms of sinh-Gordon solitons. Nevertheless, we present a simple ansatz form that gives closed analytic expressions for both the space-time dep…
We study the thermodynamics of the 2+1 dimensional Gross-Neveu model in the presence of a chemical potential by introducing a representation for the canonical partition function which encodes both real and imaginary chemical potential cases. It is pointed out that the latter case probes the thermodynamics of the possible anyon-like excitations in the spectrum. It is also intimately connected to the breaking of the discrete Z-symmetry of a U(1) gauge theory coupled to the Gross-Neveu model at finite temperature, which we interpret as signaling anyon deconfinement. Finally, the chiral properties…
We derive a new exact self-consistent crystalline condensate in the 1+1 dimensional chiral Gross-Neveu model. This also yields a new exact crystalline solution for the one dimensional Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations and the Eilenberger equation of semiclassical superconductivity. We show that the functional gap equation can be reduced to a solvable nonlinear equation, and discuss implications for the temperature-chemical potential phase diagram.
The method of optimized perturbation theory (OPT) is used to study the phase diagram of the massless Gross-Neveu model in 2+1 dimensions. In the temperature and chemical potential plane, our results give strong support to the existence of a tricritical point and line of first order phase transition, previously only suspected to exist from extensive lattice Monte Carlo simulations. In addition of presenting these results we discuss how the OPT can be implemented in conjunction with the Landau expansion in order to determine all the relevant critical quantities.
We construct the phase diagram of the chiral and diquark condensates at finite temperature and density in the 1+1 dimensional (2D) two flavor massless Gross Neveu model. The resultant phase diagram shows (I) the chiral condensed phase at low temperature and density, (II) the diquark condensed phase at low temperature and high density, and (III) the chiral and diquark coexisting phase at low temperature and intermediate density. This phase structure is also seen in the 3D Gross Neveu model and the 4D Nambu Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. Thus the phase diagrams of the chiral and diquark condensates i…
We construct the phase diagrams of the quark-antiquark and diquark condensates at finite temperature and density in the 3D (dimensional) 2-flavor Gross Neveu model. We found that, in contrast to the case of the 4D Nambu Jona-Lasinio model, there is no region where the quark-antiquark and diquark condensates coexist. The phase diagrams obtained for some parameter region show similar structure with the 4D QCD phase diagram.
We study the possibility of spatially non-uniform ground state in (1+1)-dimensional models with quartic fermi interactions at finite fermion densities by introducing chemical potential μ. We examine the chiral Gross-Neveu model and the Cooper pair model as toy models of the chiral symmetry breaking and the difermion pair condensates which are presumed to exist in QCD. We confirm in the chiral Gross-Neveu model that the ground state has a crystalline structure in which the chiral condensate oscillates in space with wave number 2μ. Whereas in the Cooper pair model we find that the vacuum structu…
Baryons in the large N limit of two-dimensional Gross-Neveu models are reconsidered. The time-dependent Dirac-Hartree-Fock approach is used to boost a baryon to any inertial frame and shown to yield the covariant energy-momentum relation. Momentum distributions are computed exactly in arbitrary frames and used to interpolate between the rest frame and the infinite momentum frame, where they are related to structure functions. Effects from the Dirac sea depend sensitively on the occupation fraction of the valence level and the bare fermion mass and do not vanish at infinite momentum. In the cas…
Chiral symmetry of the 2-dimensional chiral Gross-Neveu model is broken explicitly by a bare mass term as well as a splitting of scalar and pseudo-scalar coupling constants. The vacuum and light hadrons - mesons and baryons which become massless in the chiral limit - are explored analytically in leading order of the derivative expansion by means of a double sine-Gordon equation. Depending on the parameters, this model features new phenomena as compared to previously investigated 4-fermion models: spontaneous breaking of parity, a non-trivial chiral vacuum angle, twisted kink-like baryons whose…
Dirac and Weyl fermions appear as quasi-particle excitations in many different condensed-matter systems. They display various quantum transitions which represent unconventional universality classes related to the variants of the Gross-Neveu model. In this work we study the bosonized version of the standard Gross-Neveu model -- the Gross-Neveu-Yukawa theory -- at three-loop order, and compute critical exponents in $4-ε$ dimensions for general number of fermion flavors. Our results fully encompass the previously known two-loop calculations, and agree with the known three-loop results in the pure…
Using results from the theory of non-degenerate conducting polymers like cis-polyacetylene, we generalize our previous work on dense baryonic matter and the soliton crystal in the massless Gross-Neveu model to finite bare fermion mass. In the large N limit, the exact crystal ground state can be constructed analytically, in close analogy to the bipolaron lattice in polymers. These findings are contrasted to the standard scenario with homogeneous phases only and a first order phase transition at a critical chemical potential.
We find the general solution to the time-dependent Hartree-Fock problem for scattering solutions of the Gross-Neveu models, with both discrete (GN_2) and continuous (NJL_2) chiral symmetry. We find new multi-breather solutions both for the GN_2 model, generalizing the Dashen-Hasslacher-Neveu breather solution, and also new twisted breathers for the NJL_2 model. These solutions satisfy the full TDHF consistency conditions, and only in the special cases of GN_2 kink scattering do these conditions reduce to the integrable Sinh-Gordon equation. We also show that all baryons and breathers are compo…
Magnetic catalysis describes the enhancement of symmetry breaking quantum fluctuations in chirally symmetric quantum field theories by the coupling of fermionic degrees of freedom to a magnetic background configuration. We use the functional renormalization group to investigate this phenomenon for interacting Dirac fermions propagating in (2+1)-dimensional spacetime, described by the Gross-Neveu model. We identify pointlike operators up to quartic fermionic terms that can be generated in the renormalization group flow by the presence of an external magnetic field. We employ the beta function f…
We consider the 3-dimensional massive Gross-Neveu model at finite temperature as an effective theory for strong interactions. Using the Matsubara imaginary time formalism, we derive a closed form for the renormalized $T$-dependent four-point function. This gives a singularity, suggesting a phase transition. Considering the free energy we obtain the $T$-dependent mass, which goes to zero for some temperature. These results lead us to the conclusion that there is a second-order phase transition.
We present a numerical simulation of the Gross-Neveu model on the lattice using a new representation in terms of fermion loops. In the loop representation all signs due to Pauli statistics are eliminated completely and the partition function is a sum over closed loops with only positive weights. We demonstrate that the new formulation allows to simulate volumes which are two orders of magnitude larger than those accessible with standard methods.
We exhaust all exact self-consistent solutions of complex-valued fermionic condensates in the 1+1 dimensional Bogoliubov-de Gennes and chiral Gross-Neveu systems under uniform boundary conditions. We obtain $n$ complex (twisted) kinks, or grey solitons, with $2n$ parameters corresponding to their positions and phase shifts. Each soliton can be placed at an arbitrary position while the self-consistency requires its phase shift to be quantized by $π/N$ for $N$ flavors.
The properties of the two-flavored Gross-Neveu model in the (1+1)-dimensional spacetime are investigated in the presence of the isospin $μ_I$ as well as quark number $μ$ chemical potentials both at zero and nonzero temperatures. The consideration is performed in the limit $N_c\to\infty$, i.e. in the case with an infinite number of colored quarks. In the plane of parameters $μ_I,μ$ a rather rich phase structure is found, which contains phases with and without pion condensation. Moreover, we have found a great variety of one-quark excitations of these phases, including gapless and gapped quasipa…
We perform a 1/N-expansion of the partition function of the massive Gross-Neveu model in 1+1 dimensions. The procedure allows for the inclusion of the contribution of scalar and pseudoscalar composites (of order 1/N) to the equation of state. The naive expectation that the bosonic fluctuations correct significantly the mean field approximation at low temperatures is confirmed by our calculations. Actually the relevant degrees of freedom of hadronic matter at low temperatures are found to be pion-like excitations, rather than the fundamental constituents.
The phase diagram of the Gross-Neveu (G-N) model in 2+1 dimensions as a function of chemical potential and temperature has a simple curve separating the broken symmetry and unbroken symmetry phases, with chiral symmetry being restored both at high temperature and high density. We study, in leading order in the 1/N expansion, the dynamics of the chiral phase transition for an expanding plasma of quarks in the Gross-Neveu model in 2+1 dimensions assuming boost invariant kinematics. We compare the time evolution of the order parameter (mass of the fermion) for evolutions starting in the unbroken …
Using analogies between flow equations from the Functional Renormalization Group and flow equations from (numerical) fluid dynamics we investigate the effects of bosonic fluctuations in a bosonized Gross-Neveu model -- namely the Gross-Neveu-Yukawa model. We study this model for finite numbers of fermions at varying chemical potential and temperature in the local potential approximation. Thereby we numerically demonstrate that for any finite number of fermions and as long as the temperature is non-zero, there is no $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry breaking for arbitrary chemical potentials.
We explore the phase structure of the 1+1 dimensional Gross-Neveu model at finite number of fermion flavors using lattice field theory. Besides a chirally symmetric phase and a homogeneously broken phase we find evidence for the existence of an inhomogeneous phase, where the condensate is a spatially oscillating function. Our numerical results include a crude $μ$-$T$ phase diagram.
In this work, the phase diagram of the $2+1$-dimensional Gross-Neveu model is investigated with baryon chemical potential as well as chiral chemical potential in the mean-field approximation. We study the theory using two lattice discretizations, which are both based on naive fermions. An inhomogeneous chiral phase is observed only for one of the two discretizations. Our results suggest that this phase disappears in the continuum limit.
The properties of the two-flavored Gross-Neveu model with nonzero current quark mass are investigated in the (1+1)-dimensional spacetime at finite isospin $μ_I$ as well as quark number $μ$ chemical potentials and zero temperature. The consideration is performed in the limit $N_c\to\infty$, i.e. in the case with an infinite number of colored quarks. In the plane of parameters $μ_I,μ$ a rather rich phase structure is found, which contains phases with and without pion condensation. We have found a great variety of one-quark excitations of these phases, including gapless and gapped quasiparticles.…
We construct the phase diagram of the quark-antiquark and diquark condensates at finite temperature and density in the 2 + 1 dimensional (3D) two flavor massless Gross Neveu (GN) model with the 4-component quarks. In contrast to the case of the 2-component quarks, there appears the coexisting phase of the quark-antiquark and diquark condensates. This is the crucial difference between the 2-component and 4-component quark cases in the 3D GN model. The coexisting phase is also seen in the 4D Nambu Jona-Lasinio model. Then we see that the 3D GN model with the 4-component quarks bears closer resem…
We investigate the parity-broken phase structure for staggered and naive fermions in the Gross-Neveu model as a toy model of QCD. We consider a generalized staggered Gross-Neveu model including two types of four-point interactions. We use generalized mass terms to split the doublers for both staggered and naive fermions. The phase boundaries derived from the gap equations show that the mass splitting of tastes results in an Aoki phase both in the staggered and naive cases. We also discuss the continuum limit of these models and explore taking the chirally-symmetric limit by fine-tuning a mass …
Recent observations in the OPERA experiment suggest that the neutrino could propagate with speed that is superluminal. Based on early theoretical work on tachyonic fermions we shall study a modification of the Gross-Neveu model in two dimensions. We shall see that the theory results to the dynamical generation of real and imaginary masses. These imaginary masses indicate the possibility that tachyonic solutions (or instabilities) could exist in the theory. The implications of a tachyonic neutrino coming from astrophysical sources are critically discussed. Moreover, we present a toy model that …
We present results from numerical simulations of the (2+1)-dimensional Gross-Neveu model with a U(1) chiral symmetry and N_f=4 fermion species at non-zero temperature. We provide evidence that there are two different chirally symmetric phases, one critical and one with finite correlation length, separated by a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. We have also identified a regime above the critical temperature in which the fermions acquire a screening mass even in the absence of chiral symmetry breaking, analogous to the pseudogap behaviour observed in cuprate superconductors.
We present results from a numerical study of bound state wavefunctions in the (2+1)-dimensional Gross-Neveu model with staggered lattice fermions at both zero and nonzero temperature. Mesonic channels with varying quantum numbers are identified and analysed. In the strongly coupled chirally broken phase at T=0 the wavefunctions expose effects due to varying the interaction strength more effectively than straightforward spectroscopy. In the weakly coupled chirally restored phase information on fermion - antifermion scattering is recovered. In the hot chirally restored phase we find evidence for…
