The simplest Weyl semimetal with broken time-reversal symmetry consists of a pair of Weyl nodes located at wave vectors $\mathbf{K}_{τ}=τ\mathbf{b}$ in momentum space with $τ=\pm 1$ the node index and chirality. The electronic dispersion near each node is linear. In a magnetic field $\mathbf{B}$ along $\mathbf{b}$, this dispersion is modified into a series of positive and negative energy Landau levels $n=\pm 1,\pm 2,\ldots ,$which disperse along the direction of the magnetic field, and a chiral Landau level, $n=0$, with a linear dispersion given by $e_{τ,n=0}\left( k_{z}\right) =-τ\hslash v_{F}k_{z},$ where $k_{z}$ is the component of the wave vector $\mathbf{k}$ along the magnetic field and $v_{F}$ is the Fermi velocity. In the extreme quantum limit, the Fermi level is in the chiral levels near the Dirac point. When Coulomb interaction is considered, a Weyl semimetal may be unstable towards the formation of a condensate of internodal electron-hole pairs. In this article we use the full long-range Coulomb interaction and the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation to generate the condensed state. We study its stability with respect to a change in the Fermi velocity, doping and strength of the Coulomb interaction and also consider Weyl nodes with higher Chern number $C=2,3$. We derive the response functions of the excitonic state in the generalized random-phase approximation (GRPA). We show that, in the mean-field gap induced by the internodal coherence, there is, in the GRPA excitonic response, a series of bound electron-hole states with a binding energy that decreases until the Hartree-Fock energy gap is reached. In addition, there is a collective mode gapped at exactly the plasmon frequency: the gapless mode present in the proper excitonic response function is pushed to the plasmon frequency by the long-range Coulomb interaction.
Internodal dynamics of quasiparticles in Weyl semimetals manifest themselves in hydrodynamic, transport and thermodynamic phenomena and are essential for potential valleytronic applications of these systems. In an external magnetic field, coherent quasiparticle tunnelling between the nodes modifies the quasiparticle dispersion and, in particular, opens gaps in the dispersion of quasiparticles at the zeroth Landau level. We study magnetotransport in a Weyl semimetal taking into account mechanisms of quasiparticle scattering both affected by such gaps and independent of them. We compute the long…
We solve the two-band model for the transport across a junction between a semimetal and an excitonic insulator. We analyze the current in terms of two competing terms associated with neutral excitons and charged carriers, respectively. We find a high value for the interface resistance, extremely sensitive to the junction transparency. We explore favorable systems for experimental confirmation.
A sufficiently strong long-range Coulomb interaction can induce excitonic pairing in gapless Dirac semimetals, which generates a finite gap and drives semimetal-insulator quantum phase transition. This phenomenon is in close analogy to dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in high energy physics. In most realistic Dirac semimetals, including suspended graphene, Coulomb interaction is too weak to open an excitonic gap. The Coulomb interaction plays a more important role at low energies in a two-dimensional semi-Dirac semimetal, in which the fermion spectrum is linear in one component of momenta an…
From the solution of a two-band model, we predict that the thermal and electrical transport across the junction of a semimetal and an excitonic insulator will exhibit high resistance behavior and low entropy production at low temperatures, distinct from a junction of a semimetal and a normal semiconductor. This phenomenon, ascribed to the dissipationless exciton flow which dominates over the charge transport, is based on the much longer length scale of the change of the effective interface potential for electron scattering due to the coherence of the condensate than in the normal state.
We study the different phases in the Quantum Electrodynamics of 3D Dirac semimetals depending on the number $N$ of Dirac fermions, using renormalization group methods and the self-consistent resolution of the Schwinger-Dyson equation. We find that, for $N < 4$, a phase with dynamical generation of mass prevails at sufficiently strong coupling, sharing the same physics of the excitonic instability in 2D Dirac semimetals. For $N \geq 4$, we show that the phase diagram has instead a line of critical points characterized by the suppression of the quasiparticle weight at low energies, making the sy…
The strong Coulomb interaction between massless Dirac fermions can drive a semimetal-insulator transition in single-layer graphene by dynamically generating an excitonic fermion gap. There is a critical interaction strength $λ_c$ that separates the semimetal phase from the insulator phase. We calculate the specific heat and susceptibility of the system and show that they exhibit distinct behaviors in the semimetal and insulator phases.
The topological nature of Weyl semimetals (WSMs) is corroborated by the presence of chiral surface states, which connect the projections of the bulk Weyl points by Fermi arcs (FAs). We study a bilayer structure realized by introducing a thin insulating spacer into a bulk WSM. Employing a self-consistent mean-field description of the interlayer Coulomb interaction, we propose that this system can develop an interlayer electron-hole pair condensate. The formation of this excitonic condensate leads to partial gapping of the FA dispersion. We obtain the dependence of the energy gap and the critica…
Nesting in a semimetal can lead to an excitonic insulator state with spontaneous coherence between conduction and valence bands and a gap for charged excitations. In this paper we present a theory of the ferromagnetic state that occurs when the density of electrons in the conduction band and holes in the valence band differ. We find an unexpectedly rich doping-field phase diagram and an unusual collective excitation spectrum that includes two gapless collective modes. We predict regions of doping and external field in which phase-separated condensates of electrons and holes with parallel spins…
A sufficiently strong Coulomb interaction may open an excitonic fermion gap and thus drive a semimetal-insulator transition in graphene. In this paper, we study the Eliashberg theory of excitonic transition by coupling the fermion gap equation self-consistently to the equation of vacuum polarization function. Including the fermion gap into polarization function increases the effective strength of Coulomb interaction because it reduces the screening effects due to the collective particle-hole excitations. Although this procedure does not change the critical point, it leads to a significant enha…
The strong long-range Coulomb interaction between massless Dirac fermions in graphene can drive a semimetal-insulator transition. We show that this transition is strongly suppressed when the Coulomb interaction is screened by such effects as disorder, thermal fluctuation, doping, and finite volume. It is completely suppressed once the screening factor $μ$ is beyond a threshold $μ_{c}$ even for infinitely strong coupling. However, such transition is still possible if there is an additional strong contact four-fermion interaction. The differences between screened and contact interactions are als…
In the extreme quantum limit states under high magnetic fields, enhanced electronic correlation effects can stabilize anomalous quantum states. Using band-tuning with a magnetic field, we realized a spin-polarized quantum limit state in the field-induced semimetallic phase of a topological insulator Bi_{1-x}Sb_x. Further increase in the field injects more electrons and holes to this state and results in an unexpected reentrant insulator state in this topological semimetallic state. A single-particle picture cannot explain this reentrant insulator state, reminiscent of phase transitions due to …
There is a close connection between various new phenomena in Weyl semimetals and the existence of linear band crossings in the single particle description. We show, by a full self-consistent mean-field calculation, how this picture is modified in the presence of long-range Coulomb interactions. The chiral symmetry breaking occurs at strong enough interactions and the internode interband excitonic pairing channel is found to be significant, which determines the gap-opened band profile varying with interaction strength. Remarkably, in the resultant interacting phase, finite band Chern number jum…
In this paper, we consider the spectral properties of the bilayer graphene with the local excitonic pairing interaction between the electrons and holes. We consider the generalized Hubbard model, which includes both intralayer and interlayer Coulomb interaction parameters. The solution of the excitonic gap parameter is used to calculate the electronic band structure, single-particle spectral functions, the hybridization gap, and the excitonic coherence length in the bilayer graphene. We show that the local interlayer Coulomb interaction is responsible for the semimetal-semiconductor transition…
Half a century ago, Mott noted that tuning the carrier density of a semimetal towards zero produces an insulating state in which electrons and holes form bound pairs. It was later argued that such pairing persists even if a semiconducting gap opens in the underlying band structure, giving rise to what has become known as the strong coupling limit of an `excitonic insulator.' While these `weak' and `strong' coupling extremes were subsequently proposed to be manifestations of the same excitonic state of electronic matter, the predicted continuity of such a phase across a band gap opening has not…
Two-dimensional Dirac fermions are subjected to two types of interactions, namely the long-range Coulomb interaction and the short-range on-site interaction. The former induces excitonic pairing if its strength $α$ is larger than some critical value $α_c$, whereas the latter drives an antiferromagnetic Mott transition when its strength $U$ exceeds a threshold $U_c$. Here, we study the impacts of the interplay of these two interactions on excitonic pairing with the Dyson-Schwinger equation approach. We find that the critical value $α_c$ is increased by weak short-range interaction. As $U$ incre…
We compute the effects of electronic interactions on gapless spin-3/2 excitations that in a noninteracting system emerge at a bi-quadratic touching of Kramers degenerate valence and conduction bands, known as Luttinger semimetal. This model can describe the low-energy physics of HgTe, gray-Sn, 227 pyrochlore iridates and half-Heuslers. For the sake of concreteness we only consider the short-range components of the Coulomb interaction. By combining mean-field analysis with a renormalization group (RG) calculation, we construct multiple cuts of the global phase diagram of interacting spin-3/2 fe…
Using first-principle many-body perturbation theory, we investigate the optical properties of 8- borophene at two levels of approximations; the GW method considering only the electron-electron interaction and the GW in combination with the Bethe-Salpeter equation including electron-hole coupling. The band structure exhibits anisotropic Dirac cones with semimetallic character. The optical absorption spectra are obtained for different light polarizations and we predict strong optical absorbance anisotropy. The absorption peaks undergo a global redshift when the electron-hole interaction is taken…
We compute the renormalization group flow of the long-ranged electron-electron interaction at the Gross-Neveu quantum critical point between the semimetal and the excitonic insulator in graphene, perturbatively in the small parameter $ε=d-1$, with $d$ as the spatial dimension. The $O(ε)$ correction to the usual beta-function makes the long-range interaction only more irrelevant at the critical than at the Gaussian fixed point. A weak long-range tail of the Coulomb interaction is found to be marginally irrelevant also in arbitrary dimension when the number of Dirac fermions is large. Its ultima…
