Using first-principle many-body perturbation theory, we investigate the optical properties of 8- borophene at two levels of approximations; the GW method considering only the electron-electron interaction and the GW in combination with the Bethe-Salpeter equation including electron-hole coupling. The band structure exhibits anisotropic Dirac cones with semimetallic character. The optical absorption spectra are obtained for different light polarizations and we predict strong optical absorbance anisotropy. The absorption peaks undergo a global redshift when the electron-hole interaction is taken into account due to the formation of bound excitons which have an anisotropic excitonic wave function.
$8-Pmmn$ borophene is a polymorph of borophene which hosts an anisotropic tilted Dirac cone. Using a low energy effective Hamiltonian for borophene, we analytically calculate the density-density response function of borophene and study its anisotropic plasmon dispersion and screening properties. We find that the anisotropic plasmon mode in $8-Pmmn$ borophene, remains undamped for higher energies along the mirror symmetry direction. The friedel oscillation in borophene is found to decay as $r^{-3}$ in the large $r$ limit, with both the amplitude as well as the periodicity of the Friedel oscilla…
The energy spectrum for the problem of 8-Pmmn borophene's electronic carriers under perpendicular incidence of electromagnetic waves is studied without the use of any perturbative technique. This allows to study the effects of very strong fields. To obtain the spectrum and wavefunctions, the time-dependent Dirac equation is solved by using a frame moving with the space-time cone of the wave, i.e., by transforming the equation into an ordinary differential equation in terms of the wave-phase, leading to an electron-wave quasiparticle. The limiting case of strong fields is thus analyzed. The resu…
As a new two-dimensional Dirac material, 8-\textit{Pmmn} borophene hosts novel anisotropic and tilted massless Dirac fermions (MDFs) and has attracted increasing interest. However, the potential application of 8-\textit{Pmmn} borophene in spin fields has not been explored. Here, we study the long-range RKKY interaction mediated by anisotropic and tilted MDFs in magnetically-doped 8-\textit{Pmmn} borophene. To this aim, we carefully analyze the unique real-space propagation of anisotropic and tilted MDFs with noncolinear momenta and group velocities. As a result, we analytically demonstrate the…
The tunneling of electrons and holes in quantum structures plays a crucial role in studying the transport properties of materials and the related devices. 8-Pmmn borophene is a new two-dimensional Dirac material, which hosts tilted Dirac cone and chiral, anisotropic massless Dirac fermions. We develop the transfer matrix method to investigate the Klein tunneling of massless fermions across the smooth NP junctions and NPN junctions of 8-Pmmn borophene. Like the sharp NP junctions of 8-Pmmn borophene, the tilted Dirac cones induce the oblique Klein tunneling. The angle of perfect transmission to…
The 8-\textit{Pmmn} borophene is one kind of new elemental monolayer, which hosts anisotropic and tilted massless Dirac fermions (MDF). The planar \textit{p-n} junction (PNJ) structure as the basic component of various novel devices based on the monolayer material has attracted increasing attention. Here, we analytically study the transport properties of anisotropic and tilted MDF across 8-\textit{Pmmn} borophene PNJ. Similar to the isotropic MDF across graphene junctions, perfect transmission exists but its direction departures the normal direction of borophene PNJ induced by the anisotropy a…
We present a detail theoretical study of the Drude weight and optical conductivity of 8-$Pmmn$ borophene having tilted anisotropic Dirac cones. We provide exact analytical expressions of $xx$ and $yy$ components of the Drude weight as well as maximum optical conductivity. We also obtain exact analytical expressions of the minimum energy ($ε_1$) required to trigger the optical transitions and energy ($ε_2$) needed to attain maximum optical conductivity. We find that the Drude weight and optical conductivity are highly anisotropic as a consequence of the anisotropic Dirac cone. The optical condu…
Polymorph of 8-Pmmn borophene exhibits anisotropic tilted Dirac cones. In this work, we explore the consequences of the tilted Dirac cones in magnetotransport properties of a periodically modulated borophene. We evaluate modulation induced diffusive conductivity by using linear response theory in low temperature regime. The application of weak modulation (electric/magnetic or both) gives rise to the magnetic field dependent non-zero oscillatory drift velocity which causes Weiss oscillation in the longitudinal conductivity at low magnetic field. The Weiss oscillation is studied in presence of a…
We report a density-functional-theoretic study of the stability and electronic structure of two recently proposed borophene sheets with Pmmn symmetry and nonzero thickness. We then investigate nanoribbons (BNRs) derived from these nanostructures, with particular attention to technologically relevant properties like magnetism and electronic transport. We consider two perpendicular directions for the edges of the stripes as well as different lateral widths. We show that the Pmmn8 sheet, with 8 atoms in its unit cell and generated by two interpenetrating lattices, has a larger binding energy than…
The Dynamical-gap formation in Weyl semimetals modulated by intense elliptically polarized light is addressed through the solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for the Weyl Hamiltonian via the Floquet theorem. The time-dependent wave functions and the quasi-energy spectrum of the two-dimensional Weyl Hamiltonian under normal incidence of elliptically polarized electromagnetic waves are obtained using a non-perturbative approach. In it, the Weyl equation is reduced to an ordinary second-order differential Mathieu equation. It is shown that the stability conditions of the Mathieu f…
The polymorph of ${\rm 8-Pmmn}$ borophene is an anisotropic Dirac material with tilted Dirac cones at two valleys. The tilting of the Dirac cones at two valleys are in opposite direction, which manifests itself via valley dependent Landau levels in presence of an in-plane electric field (Hall field). The sensitivity of the Landau levels on valley index causes valley polarized magnetotransport properties in presence of a Hall field, which is in contrast to the monolayer graphene with isotropic non-tilted Dirac cones. The longitudinal conductivity and Hall conductivity are evaluated by using lin…
Negative refraction usually demands complex structure engineering while it is very natural for massless Dirac fermions (MDFs) across the \textit{p-n} junction, this leads to Dirac electron optics. The emergent Dirac materials may exhibit hitherto unidentified phenomenon due to their nontrivial band structures in contrast to the isotropic MDFs in graphene. Here, as a specific example, we explore the negative refraction induced caustics and Veselago focusing of tilted MDFs across 8-\textit{Pmmn} borophene \textit{p-n} junctions. To this aim, we develop a technique to effectively construct the el…
We theoretically investigate the indirect signatures of the tilted anisotropic Dirac cones on Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) exchange interaction in a two dimensional polymorph of boron atoms. Unlike the case of isotropic non-tilted Dirac material-graphene, here we observe that the tilting of the Dirac cones exhibits a significant impact on the RKKY exchange interaction in terms of the suppression of oscillation frequency. The reason can be attributed to the behavior of the Fermi level and the corresponding density of states with respect to the tilting parameter. The direct measurement o…
The electronic and optical conductivities for anisotropic tilted Dirac semimetals are calculated using the Kubo formula. As in graphene, it is shown that the minimal conductivity is sensitive to the order in which the temperature, frequency and scattering limits are taken. Both intraband and interband scattering are found to be direction dependent. In the high frequency and low temperature limit, the conductivities do not depend on frequency and are weighted by the anisotropy in such a way that the geometrical mean $\sqrt{σ_{xx}σ_{yy}}$ of the conductivity is the same as in graphene. This resu…
Borophene (two-dimensional boron sheet) is a new type of two-dimensional material, which was recently grown successfully on single crystal Ag substrates. In this paper, we investigate the electronic structure and bonding characteristics of borophene by first-principle calculations. The band structure of borophene shows highly anisotropic metallic behaviour. The obtained optical properties of borophene exhibit strong anisotropy as well. The combination of high optical transparency and high electrical conductivity in borophene makes it a promising candidate for future design of transparent condu…
We predict nonlinear optical polarization rotation in two dimensional massless Dirac systems including graphene and 8-$Pmmn$ borophene. When illuminated, a continuous wave optical field leads to a nonlinear steady state of photo-excited carriers in the medium. The photo-excited population inversion and the inter-band coherence gives rise to a finite transverse optical conductivity, $σ_{xy} (ω)$. This in turn leads to definitive signatures in associated Kerr and Faraday polarization rotation, which are measurable in a realistic experimental scenario.
Experimental realization of two-dimensional boron sheets was reported very recently by Feng et. al. using molecular beam epitaxy on silver (111) surface. These boron sheets possess promising electronic and transport properties. We performed the density functional theory (DFT) calculation to see the stability of two $β_{12}$ and $χ$ polymorphs of boron under strain and further studied electronic and transport properties. We verified the directional dependency in electron transport properties in these two boron polymorphs. Here we report tunable anisotropic transport properties of the borophenes…

Low-symmetry 2D materials---such as ReS$_2$ and ReSe$_2$ monolayers, black phosphorus monolayers, group-IV monochalcogenide monolayers, borophene, among others---have more complex atomistic structures than the honeycomb lattices of graphene, hexagonal boron nitride, and transition metal dichalcogenides. The reduced symmetries of these emerging materials give rise to inhomogeneous electron, optical, valley, and spin responses, as well as entirely new properties such as ferroelasticity, ferroelectricity, magnetism, spin-wave phenomena, large nonlinear optical properties, photogalvanic effects, a…
We explore the effect of valley-contrasting gaps in the optical response of two-dimensional anisotropic tilted Dirac systems. We study the spectrum of intraband and interband transitions through the joint density of states (JDOS), the optical conductivity tensor, and the Drude spectral weight. The energy bands present an indirect gap in each valley. Thus a new possibility opens for the position of the Fermi level (an ``indirect zone''), and for the momentum space for allowed transitions. The JDOS near each gap displays a set of three van Hove singularities which are in contrast to the case of …
The interband optical absorption of linearly polarised light by two-dimensional (2D) semimetals hosting tilted and anisotropic Dirac cones in the bandstructure is analysed theoretically. Super-critically tilted (type-II) Dirac cones are characterised by an absorption that is highly dependent on the incident photon polarisation and frequency, and is tunable by changing the Fermi level with a back-gate voltage. Type-II Dirac cones exhibit open Fermi surfaces and large regions of the Brillouin zone where the valence and conduction bands sit either above or below the Fermi level. As a consequence,…
