We study the micorscopic origin of the multiple superconducting and magnetic phases observed in CeRh$_2$As$_2$. We exploit the existence of a van Hove singularity enforced by the nonsymmorphic symmetry to conduct a renormalization group analysis. When Fermi-surface nesting is strong, we find two closely-competing superconducting states with opposite parities, as well as an instability towards specific spin-density wave states, consistent with key features of the phase diagram of CeRh$_2$As$_2$.
Specific heat studies of CeRhIn5 as functions of pressure and magnetic field have been used to explore the relationship between magnetism and unconventional superconductivity, both of which involve the 4f electron of Ce. Results of these studies cannot be understood as a simple competition for Fermi-surface states and require a new conceptual framework.
We report a thermodynamic and transport study of the phase diagram of CeRh1-xIrxIn5. Superconductivity is observed over a broad range of doping, 0.3 < x < 1, including a substantial range of concentration (0.3 < x <0.6) over which it coexists with magnetic order (which is observed for 0 < x < 0.6). The anomalous transition to zero resistance that is observed in CeIrIn5 is robust against Rh substitution. In fact, the observed bulk Tc in CeRh0.5Ir0.5In5 is more than double that of CeIrIn5, whereas the zero-resistance transition temperature is relatively unchanged for 0.5 < x < 1.
With understood exceptions, conventional superconductivity does not coexist with long-range magnetic order[1]. In contrast, unconventional superconductivity develops near a boundary separating magnetically ordered and magnetically disordered phases[2,3]. A maximum in the superconducting transition temperature Tc develops where this boundary extrapolates to T=0 K, suggesting that fluctuations associated with this magnetic quantum-critical point are essential for unconventional superconductivity[4,5]. Invariably though, unconventional superconductivity hides the magnetic boundary when T < Tc, pr…
We report on zero-field muon spin relaxation studies of cerium based heavy-fermion materials CeRh_{1-x}Ir_xIn_5. In the superconducting x=0.75 and 1 compositions muon spin relaxation functions were found to be temperature independent across T_c; no evidence for the presence of electronic magnetic moments was observed. The x=0.5 material is antiferromagnetic below T_N=3.75 K and superconducting below T_c=0.8 K. Muon spin realxation spectra show the gradual onset of damped coherent oscillations characteristic of magnetic order below T_N. At 1.65 K the total oscillating amplitude accounts for at …
We report on detailed ac calorimetry measurements under high pressure and magnetic field of CeRhIn5. Under hydrostatic pressure the antiferromagnetic order vanishes near p_c*=2 GPa due to a first order transition. Superconductivity is found for pressures above 1.5 GPa inside the magnetic ordered phase. However, the superconductivity differ from the pure homogeneous superconducting ground state above 2 GPa. The application of an external magnetic field H || ab induces a transition inside the superconducting state above pc* which is strongly related to the re-entrance of the antiferromagnetism w…
Superconductivity and magnetism are mutually exclusive in most alloys and elements, so it is striking that superconductivity emerges around a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP) in many strongly correlated electron systems (SCES). In the latter case superconductivity is believed to be unconventional and directly influenced by the QCP. However, experimentally unconventional superconductivity has neither been established nor directly been linked to any mechanism of the QCP. Here we report measurements in the heavy-fermion superconductors CeIrSi$_3$ and CeRhSi$_3$. The measurements were perform…
We report the discovery of two-phase unconventional superconductivity in CeRh$_2$As$_2$. Using thermodynamic probes, we establish that the superconducting critical field of its high-field phase is as high as 14 T, remarkable in a material whose transition temperature is 0.26 K. Furthermore, a $c$-axis field drives a transition between two different superconducting phases. In spite of the fact that CeRh$_2$As$_2$ is globally centrosymmetric, we show that local inversion-symmetry breaking at the Ce sites enables Rashba spin-orbit coupling to play a key role in the underlying physics. More detail…
We report the novel pressure($P$) - temperature($T$) phase diagram of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in CeRhIn$_5$ and CeIn$_3$ revealed by the $^{115}$In nuclear-spin-lattice-relaxation ($T_1$) measurement. In the itinerant magnet CeRhIn$_5$, we found that the Néel temperature $T_N$ is reduced at $P \geq$ 1.23 GPa with an emergent pseudogap behavior. In CeIn$_3$, the localized magnetic character is robust against the application of pressure up to $P \sim$ 1.9 GPa, beyond which the system evolves into an itinerant regime in which the resistive superconducting phase emerges. We discus…
CeRh$_2$As$_2$, a non-symmorphic heavy fermion material, was recently reported to host a remarkable phase diagram with two superconducting phases. In this material, the two inequivalent Ce sites per unit cell, related by inversion symmetry, introduce a sublattice structure corresponding to an extra internal degree of freedom. Here we propose a classification of the possible superconducting states in CeRh$_2$As$_2$ from the two Ce-sites perspective. Based on the superconducting fitness analysis and the quasiclassical Eilenberger equations, we discuss two limits: Rashba spin-orbit coupling and i…
We discuss the fixed-point Hamiltonian and the spectrum of excitations of a quasi-bidimensional electronic system supporting simultaneously antiferromamagnetic ordering and superconductivity. The coexistence of these two order parameters in a single phase is possible because the magnetic order is linked to the formation of a spin density wave, and its order parameter is not associated to a spectral gap but to an energy shift of the paramagnetic bands. This peculiarity entails several distinct features in the phase diagram and the spectral properties of the model, which may have been observed i…
We report $^{115}$In nuclear-quadrupole-resonance (NQR) measurements of the pressure($P$)-induced superconductor CeRhIn$_5$ in the antiferromagnetic (AF) and superconducting (SC) states. In the AF region, the internal field $H_{int}$ at the In site is substantially reduced from $H_{int}=1.75$ kOe at P=0 to 0.39 kOe at $P=1.23$ GPa, while the Néel temperature slightly changes with increasing $P$. This suggests that either the size in the ordered moment $M_{Q}(P)$ or the angle $θ(P)$ between the direction of $M_{Q}(P)$ and the tetragonal $c$ axis is extrapolated to zero at $P^*=1.6 \pm 0.1$ GPa …
Specific heat, magnetic susceptibility and electrical transport measurements were performed at ambient pressure on high-quality single crystal specimens of CeRhIn5 down to ultra-low temperatures. We report signatures of an anomaly observed in all measured quantities consistent with a bulk phase transition to a superconducting state at T_c=110 mK. Occurring far below the onset of antiferromagnetism at T_N=3.8 K, this transition appears to involve a significant portion of the available low-temperature density of electronic states, exhibiting an entropy change in line with that found in other mem…
The Ce compounds CeCoIn$_5$ and CeRhIn$_5$ are ideal model systems to study the competition of antiferromagnetism (AF) and superconductivity (SC). Here we discuss the pressure--temperature and magnetic field phase diagrams of both compounds. In CeRhIn$_5$ the interesting observation is that in zero magnetic field a coexistence AF+SC phase exist inside the AF phase below the critical pressure $p_{\rm c}^\star \approx 2$ GPa. Above $p_{\rm c}^\star$ AF is suppressed in zero field but can be re-induced by applying a magnetic field. The collapse of AF under pressure coincides with the abrupt chang…
We report magnetic neutron-diffraction and electrical resistivity studies on single crystals of the heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn$_{5}$ at pressures up to 2.3 GPa. These experiments show that the staggered moment of Ce and the incommensurate magnetic structure change weakly with applied pressure up to 1.63 GPa, where resistivity, specific heat and NQR measurements confirm the presence of bulk superconductivity. This work places new constraints on an interpretation of the relationship between antiferromagnetism and unconventional superconductivity in CeRhIn$_{5}$.
We report systematic measurements of ac-susceptibility, nuclear-quadrupole-resonance spectrum, and nuclear-spin-lattice-relaxation time ($T_1$) on the pressure ($P$)- induced heavy-fermion (HF) superconductor CeRhIn$_5$. The temperature ($T$) dependence of $1/T_1$ at $P$ = 1.6 GPa has revealed that antiferromagnetism (AFM) and superconductivity (SC) coexist microscopically, exhibiting the respective transition at $T_N = 2.8$ K and $T^{MF}_c$ = 0.9 K. It is demonstrated that SC does not yield any trace of gap opening in low-lying excitations below $T_c^{onset} = 2$ K, but $T_c^{MF} = 0.9$ K, fo…
A fundamental problem posed from the study of correlated electron compounds, of which heavy-fermion systems are prototypes, is the need to understand the physics of states near a quantum critical point (QCP). At a QCP, magnetic order is suppressed continuously to zero temperature and unconventional superconductivity often appears. Here, we report pressure ($P$) -dependent $^{115}$In nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeRh$_{0.5}$Ir$_{0.5}$In$_5$. These experiments reveal an antiferromagnetic (AF) QCP at $P_{\rm c}^{\rm AF}$ = 1.2 GPa where a dome o…
Layered three-dimensional centrosymmetric crystals can exhibit characteristics of noncentrosymmetric materials. This happens when each individual layer alone lacks inversion, but, when combined, inversion symmetry is restored; hence the designation: locally noncentrosymmertic superconductors (LNCSs). In LNCSs, the effects of impurities and subdominant magnetic field induced pairing channels remain unexplored. Using a minimal model, we examine all pairing channels and show that there is always a subdominant superconducting instability that is favored at high magnetic fields, which can substanti…

We present a systematic ^{115}In NQR study on the heavy fermion compounds CeRh_{1-x}Ir_xIn_5 (x=0.25, 0.35, 0.45, 0.5, 0.55 and 0.75). The results provide strong evidence for the microscopic coexistence of antiferromagnetic (AF) order and superconductivity (SC) in the range of 0.35 \leq x \leq 0.55. Specifically, for x=0.5, T_N is observed at 3 K with a subsequent onset of superconductivity at T_c=0.9 K. T_c reaches a maximum (0.94 K) at x=0.45 where T_N is found to be the highest (4.0 K). Detailed analysis of the measured spectra indicate that the same electrons participate in both SC and AF …
Recent discovery of superconductivity in CeRh$_2$As$_2$ clarified an unusual $H$-$T$ phase diagram with two superconducting phases [Khim et al. arXiv:2101.09522]. The experimental observation has been interpreted based on the even-odd parity transition characteristic of locally noncentrosymmetric superconductors. Indeed, the inversion symmetry is locally broken at the Ce site, and CeRh$_2$As$_2$ molds a new class of exotic superconductors. The low-temperature and high-field superconducting phase is a candidate for the odd-parity pair-density-wave state, suggesting a possibility of topological …
Pressure induced superconductivity in non-centrosymmetric CeRhSi$_{3}$ and CeIrSi$_{3}$ compounds has attracted significant attention of the scientific community since its discovery 15 years ago. Up-to-date, all reported experimental results were obtained employing the hybrid-cylinder piston pressure cells with a maximum reachable pressure of 3 GPa. Present study focuses on the superconducting state at higher, so far unreported, pressures using the Bridgman anvil cell and a CeRhSi$_{3}$ single crystal synthesized by the Sn-true-flux method. The initial increase of superconducting critical temp…

通过超声传播测量研究 CeRh$_2$As$_2$ 的序参数,发现其超导序参数为单组分,同时相 I 中存在无序磁序参数。
CeRh$_2$As$_2$ is an unconventional superconductor with multiple superconducting phases and $T_\mathrm{c} = 0.26$ K. When $H\parallel c$, it shows a field-induced transition at $μ_0H^* = 4$ T from a low-field superconducting state SC1 to a high-field state SC2 with a large critical field of $μ_0H_\mathrm{c2} = 14$ T. In contrast, for $H\perp c$, only the SC1 with $μ_0H_\mathrm{c2} = 2$ T is observed. A simple model based on the crystal symmetry was able to reproduce the phase-diagrams and their anisotropy, identifying SC1 and SC2 with even and odd parity superconducting states, respectively. H…
This paper has been withdrawn by the authors. We performed additional zero-field muon spin relaxation measurements in the superconducting state of CeIrIn$_5$ and found that the spontaneous fields reported previously below $T_c$ are not present. Thus, there is no evidence for a time-reversal-symmetry-violating superconducting order parameter. These new zero-field measurements, as well as new measurements of the penetration depth in this system, will be reported elsewhere. Our zero-field measurements in CeIr$_{0.5}$Rh$_{0.5}$In$_5$, reporting coexistence of superconductivity and magnetic order, …
Spatial inversion symmetry in crystal structures is closely related to the superconducting (SC) and magnetic properties of materials. Recently, several theoretical proposals that predict various interesting phenomena caused by the breaking of the local inversion symmetry have been presented. However, experimental validation has not yet progressed owing to the lack of model materials. Here we present evidence for antiferromagnetic (AFM) order in CeRh$_{2}$As$_{2}$ (SC transition temperature $T_{\rm SC} \sim 0.37$~K), wherein the Ce site breaks the local inversion symmetry. The evidence is based…
The interplay between magnetism and superconductivity in the newly discovered heavy-fermion superconductor CePt$_3$Si has been investigated using the zero-field $μ$SR technique. The $μ$SR data indicate that the whole muon ensemble senses spontaneous internal fields in the magnetic phase, demonstrating that magnetism occurs in the whole sample volume. This points to a microscopic coexistence between magnetism and heavy-fermion superconductivity.
We report on systematic evolutions of antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuations and unconventional superconductivity (SC) in heavy-fermion (HF) compounds CeRh$_{1-x}$Ir$_{x}$In$_5$ via $^{115}$In nuclear-quadrupole-resonance (NQR) experiment. The measurements of nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ have revealed the marked development of AFM spin fluctuations as a consequence of approaching an AFM ordered state with increasing Rh content. Concomitantly the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ and the energy gap $Δ_0$ increase drastically from $T_{\rm c} = 0.4$ K and $2Δ_0…
Unconventional superconductivity frequently emerges as the transition temperature of a magnetic phase, typically antiferromagnetic, is suppressed continuously toward zero temperature. Here, we report contrary behavior in pressurized CeRhGe3, a non-centrosymmetric heavy fermion compound. We find that its pressure-tuned antiferromagnetic transition temperature (TN) appears to avoid a continuous decrease to zero temperature by terminating abruptly above a dome of pressure-induced superconductivity. Near 21.5 GPa, evidence for TN suddenly vanishes, the electrical resistance becomes linear in tempe…
CeRh$_2$As$_2$ is a rare unconventional superconductor ($T_c=0.26$ K) characterized by two adjacent superconducting phases for a magnetic field $H \parallel c$-axis of the tetragonal crystal structure. Antiferromagnetic order, quadrupole-density-wave order ($T_0 = 0.4$ K) and the proximity of this material to a quantum-critical point have also been reported: The coexistence of these phenomena with superconductivity is currently under discussion. Here, we present thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity measurements on a single crystal of CeRh$_2$As$_2$ between 60 mK and 200 K and in mag…
We analyze the competition of magnetism and superconductivity in the two-dimensional Hubbard model with a moderate interaction strength, including the possibility of incommensurate spiral magnetic order. Using an unbiased renormalization group approach, we compute magnetic and superconducting order parameters in the ground state. In addition to previously established regions of Neel order coexisting with d-wave superconductivity, the calculations reveal further coexistence regions where superconductivity is accompanied by incommensurate magnetic order.
We report the discovery of superconductivity at a pressure-induced magnetic quantum critical point in the Kondo-lattice system CeSb2, sustained up to magnetic fields that exceed the conventional Pauli limit eight-fold. Like CeRh2As2, CeSb2 is locally non-centrosymmetric around the Ce-site, but the evolution of critical fields and normal state properties as CeSb2 is tuned through the quantum critical point motivates a fundamentally different explanation for its resilience to applied field.
Using the numerical unrestricted Hartree-Fock approach, we study the ground state of a two-orbital model describing newly discovered FeAs-based superconductors. We observe the competition of a $(0, π)$ mode spin-density wave and the superconductivity as the doping concentration changes. There might be a small region in the electron-doping side where the magnetism and superconductivity coexist. The superconducting pairing is found to be spin singlet, orbital even, and mixed s$_{xy}$ + d$_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ wave (even parity).
The Nd1-xCexCoIn5 alloys evolve from local moment magnetism (x = 0) to heavy fermion superconductivity (x =1). Magnetic order is observed over a broad range of x. For a substantial range of x (0.83 <= x <= 0.95) in the temperature - composition phase diagram we find that superconductivity may coexist with spin - density wave magnetic order at the Fermi surface. We show that a delicate balance betwen superconducting and magnetic instabilities can be reversibly tuned by both the Ce/Nd ratio and magnetic field, offering a new and unique model electronic system.
Unconventional superconductivity and magnetism are intertwined on a microscopic level in a wide class of materials, including high-$T_c$ cuprates, iron pnictides, and heavy-fermion compounds. A new approach to this most fundamental and hotly debated subject focuses on the role of interactions between superconducting electrons and bosonic fluctuations at the interface between adjacent layers in heterostructures. A recent state-of-the-art molecular-beam-epitaxy technique has enabled us to fabricate superlattices consisting of different heavy-fermion compounds with atomic thickness. These Kondo s…
On the basis of a three-dimensional Hubbard model, the superconducting mechanism of CeIn3 under high pressure is investigated by the third-order perturbation theory with respect to the on-site Coulomb interaction U. Here we propose the d-wave pairing state induced by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. The estimated superconducting transition temperature is lower by one order than that in the two-dimensional system for the same value of U/W (W=bandwidth). This result is consistent with the difference between CeIn3 and CeRhIn5.
The interplay of magnetism and unconventional superconductivity (d singlet wave or p triplet wave) in strongly correlated electronic system (SCES) is discussed with recent examples found in heavy fermion compounds. A short presentation is given on the formation of the heavy quasiparticle with the two sources of a local and intersite enhancement for the effective mass. Two cases of the coexistence or repulsion of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity are given with CeIn3 and CeCoIn5. A spectacular example is the emergence of superconductivity in relatively strong itinerant ferromagnets UGe2 …
We performed zero and transverse field MuSR experiments on a large number of YBa2Cu3O6+x samples. We detect coexistence of antiferro-type (AF) short range magnetism with superconductivity below T_f~10 K in compositions 0.37<x<0.39. Most muons experience local AF fields, even when SQUID detects a full SC volume fraction, which points to a local minimal interference organization of short AF stripes embedded in the superconductor. A detailed phase diagram is produced and the consequences of the minimal interference are discussed.
The properties of the superconducting ferromagnets RuSr2(Gd/Eu)Cu2O8 and RuSr2(Ln/Ce)2Cu2O10 are reviewed. The problem of coexistence and competition between magnetic and superconducting states is discussed. A model of phase separation into ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic structures is proposed.
The nonadiabatic Heisenberg model presents a nonadiabatic mechanism generating Cooper pairs in narrow, roughly half-filled "superconducting bands" of special symmetry. Here we show that this mechanism may be understood as the outcome of a special spin structure in the reciprocal space, hereinafter referred to as k-space magnetism. The presented picture permits a vivid depiction of this new mechanism highlighting the height similarity as well as the essential difference between the new nonadiabatic and the familiar Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer mechanism.
We investigated the evolution of the temperature-composition phase diagram of Fe$_{1+y}$Te upon Se substitution. In particular, the effect of Se substitution on the two-step, coupled magneto-structural transition in Fe$_{1+y}$Te single crystals is investigated. To this end, the nominal Fe excess was kept at $y$ = 0.12. For low Se concentrations, the two magneto-structural transitions displayed a tendency to merge. In spite of the high Fe-content, superconductivity emerges for Se concentrations, $x \geq$ 0.1. We present a temperature-composition phase diagram to demonstrate the interplay of str…
Recent discovery of high T_c superconductivity in Fe-based compounds may have opened a new pathway to the room temperature superconductivity. The new materials feature FeAs layers instead of the signature CuO_2 planes of much-studied cuprates. A model Hamiltonian describing FeAs layers is introduced, highlighting the crucial role of puckering of As atoms in promoting d-electron itinerancy and warding off large local-moment magnetism of Fe ions, the main enemy of superconductivity. Quantum many-particle effects in charge, spin and multiband channels are explored and a nesting-induced spin densi…

We review the studies on the emergent phases of superconductvity and magnetism in the $f$-electron derived heavy-fermion (HF) systems by means of the nuclear-quadrupole-resonance (NQR) under pressure. These studies have unraveled a rich variety of the phenomena in the ground state of HF systems. In this article, we highlight the novel phase diagrams of magnetism and unconventional superconductivity (SC) in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$, HF antiferromagnets CeRhIn$_5$, and CeIn$_3$. A new light is shed on the difference and common features on the interplay between magnetism and SC on the magnetic criticality.
Superconducting pnictides are widely found to feature spin-singlet pairing in the vicinity of an antiferromagnetic phase, for which nesting between electron and hole Fermi surfaces is crucial. LiFeAs differs from the other pnictides by (i) poor nesting properties and (ii) unusually shallow hole pockets. Investigating magnetic and pairing instabilities in an electronic model that incorporates these differences, we find antiferromagnetic order to be absent. Instead we observe almost ferromagnetic fluctuations which drive an instability toward spin-triplet p-wave superconductivity.
We provide and analyze a periodic Anderson model for studying magnetism and superconductivity in UTe$_2$, a recently-discovered candidate for a topological spin-triplet superconductor. The 24-band tight-binding model reproduces the band structure obtained from a DFT$+U$ calculation consistent with an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The Coulomb interaction of $f$-electrons enhances Ising ferromagnetic fluctuation along the $a$-axis and stabilizes spin-triplet superconductivity of either $B_{3u}$ or $A_{u}$ symmetry. When effects of pressure are taken into account in hopping integrals…
We briefly overview the importance of Hubbard and Anderson-lattice models as applied to explanation of high-temperature and heavy-fermion superconductivity. Application of the models during the last two decades provided an explanation of the paired states in correlated fermion systems and thus extended essentially their earlier usage to the description of itinerant magnetism, fluctuating valence, and the metal-insulator transition. In second part, we also present some of the new results concerning the unconventional superconductivity and obtained very recently in our group. A comparison with e…
We report the novel pressure(P)-temperature(T) phase diagrams of antiferromagnetism (AF) and superconductivity (SC) in CeRhIn$_5$, CeIn$_3$ and CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ revealed by the NQR measurement. In the itinerant helical magnet CeRhIn$_5$, we found that the Néel temperature $T_N$ is reduced at $P \geq$ 1.23 GPa with an emergent pseudogap behavior. The coexistence of AF and SC is found in a narrow P range of 1.63 - 1.75 GPa, followed by the onset of SC with line-node gap over a wide P window 2.1 - 5 GPa. In CeIn$_3$, the localized magnetic character is robust against the application of pressure up …
We review magnetic, superconducting and non-Fermi-liquid properties of the structurally layered heavy-fermion compounds Ce$_n$M$_m$In$_{3n+2m}$ (M=Co, Rh, Ir). These properties suggest d-wave superconductivity and proximity to an antiferromagetic quantum-critical point.
Inspired by the recent experimental evidence of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity coexistence in heavy fermion CeRhIn$_5$, we propose a fully microscopic approach based on the idea of real space pairing within the Anderson-Kondo lattice model. We present an overall phase diagram incorporating the emergence of a quantum critical point, where Kondo insulating (KI), antiferromagnetic (AF) and superconducting (SC) phases meet. We also obtain the Kondo insulating state with totally compensated magnetic moments as the parental state for the emerging SC phases. Furthermore, the coexistent (AF+…
