Magnetic neutron stars (NSs) often exhibit a cyclotron resonant scattering feature (CRSF) in their X-ray spectra. Cyclotron lines are believed to form in the radiative shock in the accretion column. High-luminosity NSs show a smooth anti-correlation between the cyclotron-line centroid ($E_{CRSF}$) and X-ray luminosity ($L_X$). The observed $E_{CRSF}-L_X$ smooth anti-correlation has been in tension with the theoretically predicted one by the radiative shock model. Since there is no other candidate site for the cyclotron-line formation, we re-examine the predicted rate of change of the cyclotron-line energy with luminosity at the radiative shock, taking a closer look at the Physics involved. We developed a purely analytical model describing the overall dependence of the observed cyclotron energy centroid on the shock front's height, including the relativistic boosting effect due to the mildly relativistic motion of the accreting plasma upstream with respect to the shock's reference frame and the gravitational redshift. We find that the CRSF energy varies with a) the shock height due to the dipolar magnetic field, b) the Doppler boosting between the shock and bulk-motion frames, and c) the gravitational redshift. We show that the relativistic effects noticeably weaken the predicted $E_{CRSF}-L_X$ anti-correlation. We use our model to fit the data of the X-ray source V0332+53 and demonstrate that the model fits the data impressively well, alleviating the tension between observations and theory. The reported $E_{CRSF}-L_X$ weak anti-correlation in the supercritical accretion regime may be explained by the combination of the variation of the magnetic-field strength along the accretion column, the effect of Doppler boosting, and the gravitational redshift. Thus, the actual magnetic field on the NS surface may be a factor of $\sim 2$ larger than the naively inferred value from the observed CRSF.
Cyclotron resonance scattering features (CRSFs) in the X-ray spectrum of an accreting neutron star are modified differently by accretion mounds sustained by magnetic and thermocompositional gradients. It is shown that one can discriminate, in principle, between mounds of different physical origins by studying how the line energy, width, and depth of a CRSF depend on the orientation of the neutron star, accreted mass, surface temperature distribution, and equation of state. CRSF signatures including gravitational light bending are computed for both phase-resolved and phase-averaged spectra on t…
Based on our new NuSTAR X-ray telescope data, we rule out any cyclotron line up to 60 keV in the spectra of the high mass X-ray binary 4U2206+54. In particular, we do not find any evidence of the previously claimed line around 30 keV, independently of the source flux, along the spin pulse. The spin period has increased significantly, since the last observation, up to $5750\pm10$ s, confirming the rapid spin down rate $\dot ν=-1.8\times 10^{-14}$~Hz s$^{-1}$. This behaviour might be explained by the presence of a strongly magnetized neutron star ($B_{\rm s}>$ several times $10^{13}$ G) accretin…
Accreting X-ray pulsars (XRPs) undergo luminous X-ray outbursts during which the luminosity-dependent spectral and timing features of the neutron star's emission can be analyzed in detail, thus shedding light on the accretion regime at work. We took advantage of a monitoring campaign performed with NuSTAR, Swift/XRT, AstroSat and NICER, to follow the Be/X-ray Binary 2S 1553-542 along one of its rare outbursts and trace its spectral and timing evolution. We report the discovery of a luminosity-dependent cyclotron line energy for the first time in this source. The pulse profiles and pulsed fract…
Context: Accretion-powered X-ray pulsars show highly energy-dependent and complex pulse-profile morphologies. Significant deviations from the average pulse profile can appear, in particular close to the cyclotron line energies. These deviations can be described as energy-dependent phase lags, that is, as energy-dependent shifts of main features in the pulse profile. Aims: Using a numerical study we explore the effect of cyclotron resonant scattering on observable, energy-resolved pulse profiles. Methods: We generated the observable emission as a function of spin phase, using Monte Carlo simula…
We have performed a detailed pulse phase resolved spectral analysis of the cyclotron resonant scattering features (CRSF) of the two Be/X-ray pulsars A0535+26 and XTE J1946+274 and the wind accreting HMXB pulsar 4U 1907+09 using Suzaku observations. The CRSF parameters vary strongly over the pulse phase and can be used to map the magnetic field and a possible deviation form the dipole geometry in these sources. It also reflects the conditions at the accretion column and the local environment over the changing viewing angles. The pattern of variation with pulse phase are obtained with more than …
Context: The magnetic field is a crucial ingredient of neutron stars. It governs the physics of accretion and of the resulting high-energy emission in accreting pulsars. Studies of the cyclotron resonant scattering features (CRSFs) seen as absorption lines in the X-ray spectra of the pulsars permit direct measuremets of the field strength. Aims: From an analysis of a number of pointed observations with different instruments, the energy of CRSF, Ecyc, has recently been found to decay in Her X-1, which is one of the best-studied accreting pulsars. We present our analysis of a homogeneous and alm…
The high-mass X-ray binary and accreting X-ray pulsar IGR J16393-4643 was observed by NuSTAR in the 3-79 keV energy band for a net exposure time of 50 ks. We present the results of this observation which enabled the discovery of a cyclotron resonant scattering feature with a centroid energy of 29.3(+1.1/-1.3) keV. This allowed us to measure the magnetic field strength of the neutron star for the first time: B = (2.5+/-0.1)e12 G. The known pulsation period is now observed at 904.0+/-0.1 s. Since 2006, the neutron star has undergone a long-term spin-up trend at a rate of P' = -2e-8 s/s (-0.6 s p…
We present a broadband spectral analysis of accreting neutron stars using data from XIS and PIN onboard \emph{Suzaku}. From spectral fits of these sources with a single continuum model including a powerlaw and high energy cut-off, cyclotron lines (where required), we studied the correlation between various spectral parameters. Among 39 sources we studied, 16 are those where the existence of a cyclotron line is known in literature, and 29 need a cutoff energy. Among these 29 sources, 18 have cutoff energy bunched in a range of 3-10 keV while for 11 sources, it spreads over 12-25 keV. This bi-mo…
Accretion-powered X-ray pulsars exhibit significant variability of the Cyclotron Resonance Scattering Feature (CRSF) centroid energy on pulse-to-pulse timescales, and also on much longer timescales. Two types of spectral variability are observed. For sources in group 1, the CRSF energy is negatively correlated with the variable source luminosity, and for sources in group 2, the opposite behavior is observed. The physical basis for this bimodal behavior is currently not understood. We explore the hypothesis that the accretion dynamics in the group 1 sources is dominated by radiation pressure ne…
With exactly forty years since the discovery of the first cyclotron line in Her X-1, there have been remarkable advancements in the field related to study of the physics of accreting neutron stars -- cyclotron lines have been a major torchbearer in this regard, from being the only direct estimator of the magnetic field strength, a tracer of accretion geometry and an indicator of the emission beam in these systems. The main flurry of activities have centred around studying the harmonic separations, luminosity dependence, pulse phase dependence and more recently the shapes of the line and the tr…
Resonant absorption cyclotron features are a key diagnostic tool to directly measure the strength of the magnetic field of accreting neutron stars. However, typical values for cyclotron features lie in the high-energy part of the spectrum between 20 keV and 50 keV, where detection is often damped by the low statistics from single pointed observations. We show that long-term monitoring campaign performed with Swift-BAT of persistently, but faint, accreting high-mass X-ray binaries is able to reveal in their spectra the presence of cyclotron features. We extracted the average Swift-BAT 15-150 ke…
Context: Be/X-ray binaries show outbursts with peak luminosities up to a few times $10^{37}\,$erg/s, during which they can be observed and studied in detail. Most (if not all) Be/X-ray binaries harbour accreting pulsars, whose X-ray spectra in many cases contain cyclotron resonant scattering features related to the magnetic field of the sources. Spectral variations as a function of luminosity and of the rotational phase of the neutron star are observed in many accreting pulsars. Aims: We explore X-ray spectral and timing properties of the Be/X-ray binary GX 304-1 during an outburst episode. Sp…
We employ our new model for the polarised emission of accreting X-ray pulsars to describe the emission from the luminous X-ray pulsar Hercules X-1. In contrast with previous works, our model predicts the polarisation parameters independently of spectral formation, and considers the structure and dynamics of the accretion column, as well as the additional effects on propagation due to general relativity and quantum electrodynamics. We find that our model can describe the observed pulse fraction and the pulse shape of the main peak, as well as the modulation of the cyclotron line with phase. We …
We investigate the aperiodic variability for a relatively large sample of accreting neutron stars and intermediate polars, focusing on the properties of the characteristic break commonly observed in power spectra of accreting objects. In particular, we investigate the relation of the break frequency and the magnetic field strength, both of which are connected to the size of the magnetosphere. We find that for the majority of objects in our sample the measured break frequency values indeed agree with estimated inner radii of the accretion disc, which allows to use observed break frequencies to …

We present pulse phase averaged spectra of the high mass X-ray binary pulsar 4U 1538-52/QV Nor. Observations of this persistent accreting pulsar were made with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). We study the variability of cyclotron resonant scattering feature (CRSF or simply cyclotron line) in the high energy spectra of this binary system. We show that the parameters of the CRSF are correlated. The first one is, as suggested by theory, between the width and the energy of the cyclotron line. The second one is between the relative width and the optical depth of the cyclotron line. We discu…

Magnetic cataclysmic variables are close binary systems containing a strongly magnetized white dwarf that accretes matter coming from an M-dwarf companion. High-energy radiation coming from those objects is emitted from the accretion column close to the white dwarf photosphere at the impact region. Its properties depend on the characteristics of the white dwarf and an accurate accretion column model allows the properties of the binary system to be inferred, such as the white dwarf mass, its magnetic field, and the accretion rate. We study the temporal and spectral behaviour of the accretion re…
We present results from a circular polarimetric survey of candidate detached magnetic white dwarf - M dwarf binaries obtained using the Nordic Optical Telescope, La Palma. We obtained phase resolved spectropolarimetry and imaging polarimetry of seven systems, five of which show clearly variable circular polarisation. The data indicate that these targets have white dwarfs with magnetic field strengths > 80 MG. Our study reveals that cyclotron emission can dominate the optical luminosity at wavelengths corresponding to the cyclotron emission harmonics, even in systems where the white dwarfs are …
Cyclotron lines, also called cyclotron resonant scattering features (CRSF) are spectral features, generally appearing in absorption, in the X-ray spectra of objects containing highly magnetized neutron stars, allowing the direct measurement of the magnetic field strength in these objects. Cyclotron features are thought to be due to resonant scattering of photons by electrons in the strong magnetic fields. The main content of this contribution focusses on electron cyclotron lines as found in accreting X-ray binary pulsars (XRBP) with magnetic fields on the order of several 1012 Gauss. Also, pos…
Accreting highly magnetized pulsars in binary systems are among the brightest X-ray emitters in our Galaxy. Although a number of high statistical quality broad-band (0.1-100 keV) X-ray observations are available, the spectral energy distribution of these sources is usually investigated by adopting pure phenomenological models, rather than models linked to the physics of accretion. In this paper, a detailed spectral study of the X-ray emission recorded from the high-mass X-ray binary pulsars Cen X-3, 4U 0115+63, and Her X-1 is carried out by using BeppoSAX and joined Suzaku+NuStar data, togethe…
In this work we explore the possible evolutionary track of the neutron star in the newly discovered Be/X-ray binary SXP 1062, which is believed to be the first X-ray pulsar associated with a supernova remnant. Although no cyclotron feature has been detected to indicate the strength of the neutron star's magnetic field, we show that it may be $\ga 10^{14} $G. If so SXP 1062 may belong to the accreting magnetars in binary systems. We attempt to reconcile the short age and long spin period of the pulsar taking account of different initial parameters and spin-down mechanisms of the neutron star. O…
Long-term hard X-ray monitoring observations on high mass X-ray binary Vela X-1 from 2003 -- 2011 have been performed by INTEGRAL. I systematically analyzed the average hard X-ray spectra of Vela X-1 from 3 -- 200 keV, with main aims to detect cyclotron resonant scattering features and study their variation patterns with accreting luminosities and orbital phases. The cyclotron scattering lines of Vela X-1 at $\sim 22 - 27$ keV and $49 - 57$ keV are confirmed in the average spectra of Vela X-1. But in the flare states with hard X-ray luminosity higher than $\sim 5\times 10^{36}$ erg s$^{-1}$ (3…
We present NuSTAR spectral and timing studies of the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transient (SFXT) IGR J17544-2619. The spectrum is well-described by a ~1 keV blackbody and a hard continuum component, as expected from an accreting X-ray pulsar. We detect a cyclotron line at 17 keV, confirming that the compact object in IGR J17544-2619 is indeed a neutron star. This is the first measurement of the magnetic field in a SFXT. The inferred magnetic field strength, B = (1.45 +/- 0.03) * 10^12 G * (1+z) is typical of neutron stars in X-ray binaries, and rules out a magnetar nature for the compact object. We…
Highly magnetized pulsars accreting matter in a binary system are bright sources in the X-ray band (0.1-100 keV). Despite the early comprehension of the basic emission mechanism, their spectral energy distribution is generally described by phenomenological or simplified models. We propose a study of the spectral emission from the high mass X-ray binary pulsar 4U 0115+634 by means of thermal and bulk Comptonization models based on the physical properties of such objects. For this purpose, we analyze the BeppoSAX data in the energy range 0.7-100 keV of the 1999 giant outburst, 12 days after the …
Accreting X-ray pulsars are among the most luminous objects in the X-ray sky. In highly magnetized neutron stars (B~10^12 G), the flow of matter is dominated by the strong magnetic field. The general properties of accreting X-ray binaries are presented, focusing on the spectral characteristics of the systems. The use of cyclotron lines as a tool to directly measure a neutron star's magnetic field and to test the theory of accretion are discussed. We conclude with the current and future prospects for accreting X-ray binary studies.
We report on observations of the Be/X-ray binary system SwiftJ1626.6-5156 performed with NuSTAR during a short outburst in March 2021, following its detection of by the MAXI monitor and Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) observatory. Our analysis of the broadband X-ray spectrum of the source confirms the presence of two absorption-like features at energies ~9 and ~17 keV previously reported in literature and interpreted as the fundamental cyclotron resonance scattering feature (CRSF) and its first harmonic (based on RXTE data). The better sensitivity and energy resolution of NuSTAR, combined with t…
We summarize the results of a dedicated effort between 2012 and 2019 to follow the evolution of the cyclotron line in Her~X-1 through repeated NuSTAR observations. The previously observed nearly 20-year long decay of the cyclotron line energy has ended around 2012: from there onward the pulse phase averaged flux corrected cyclotron line energy has remained stable and constant at an average value of Ecyc= (37.44+/-0.07) keV (normalized to a flux level of 6.8 RXTE/ASM-cts/s). The flux dependence of Ecyc discovered in 2007 is now measured with high precision, giving a slope of (0.675+/-0.075) keV…
X-ray spectra of accreting pulsars are generally observed to vary with their X-ray luminosity. In particular, the hardness of the X-ray continuum is found to depend on luminosity. In a few sources, the correlation between the energy of the cyclotron resonance scattering feature (CRSF) and the luminosity is clear. Different types (signs) of the correlation are believed to reflect different accretion modes. We analyse two NuSTAR observations of the transient accreting pulsar Cep X-4 during its 2014 outburst. Our analysis is focused on a detailed investigation of the dependence of the CRSF energy…
The discovery of very slow pulsations (Pspin=5560s) has solved the long-standing question of the nature of the compact object in the high-mass X-ray binary 4U 2206+54 but has posed new ones. According to spin evolutionary models in close binary systems, such slow pulsations require a neutron star magnetic field strength larger that the quantum critical value, suggesting the presence of a magnetar. We present the first XMM-Newton observations of 4U 2206+54 and investigate its spin evolution. We find that the observed spin-down rate agrees with the magnetar scenario. We analyse ISGRI/INTEGRAL ob…
The RXTE observed four outbursts of the accreting X-ray binary transient source, GX 304-1 in 2010 and 2011. We present results of detailed 3-100 keV spectral analysis of 69 separate observations, and report a positive correlation between cyclotron line parameters, as well as other spectral parameters, with power law flux. The cyclotron line energy, width and depth versus flux, and thus luminosity, correlations show a flattening of the relationships with increasing luminosity, which are well described by quasi-spherical or disk accretion that yield the surface magnetic field to be ~60 keV. Sinc…

It has been recently discovered that the transition of X-ray pulsars to the low luminosity state ($L\lesssim10^{35}\,{\rm erg\,s^{-1}}$) is accompanied by a dramatic spectral change. Namely, the typical power-law-like spectrum with high energy cutoff transforms into a two-component structure with a possible cyclotron absorption feature on top of it. It was proposed that these spectral characteristics can be explained qualitatively by the emission of cyclotron photons in the atmosphere of the neutron star caused by collisional excitation of electrons to upper Landau levels and further comptoniz…
We report results from the analysis of data from two observations of the accreting binary X-ray pulsar Cen X-3 carried out with the broadband X-ray observatories Suzaku and NuSTAR. The pulse profile is dominated by a broad single peak and show some energy dependence with two additional weak pulse peaks at energies below 15 and 25 keV respectively. The broadband X-ray spectrum for 0.8-60.0 keV for Suzaku and 3.0-60.0 keV for NuSTAR is fitted well with high energy cut-off power-law model along with soft-excess, multiple iron emission lines and a cyclotron absorption. The cyclotron line energy is…
We present the analysis of RXTE monitoring data obtained during the January 2009 outburst of the hard X-ray transient 1A 1118-61. Using these observations the broadband (3.5-120 keV) spectrum of the source was measured for the first time ever. We have found that the broadband continuum spectrum of the source is similar to other accreting pulsars and is well described by several conventionally used phenomenological models. We have discovered that regardless of the applied continuum model, a prominent broad absorption feature at ~55 keV is observed. We interpret this feature as a cyclotron reson…
The results of the broadband spectral and timing study of the transient X-ray pulsar GRO J2058+42 in a wide energy range at a low luminosity $L_{x} \simeq 2.5\times 10^{36}$ erg s$^{-1}$ are reported. The data revealed that the pulse profile and pulse fraction of the source are significantly changed in comparison with previous NuSTAR observations, when the source was ten times brighter. The cyclotron absorption line at $\sim10$ keV in the narrow phase interval is consistent with the high state observations. Spectral analysis showed that at high luminosities $L_{x}\simeq (2.7-3.2)\times 10^{37}…
A0535+26 is a slowly rotating pulsar accreting from the wind of a massive Be star, and that exhibits two cyclotron absorption lines in its X-ray spectrum, at about 45 and 100 keV, respectively. Unlike similar sources, no significant variations of the energy of its cyclotron lines with flux were observed to date. The bright outburst of February 2011 thus offers a unique occasion to probe this peculiar behavior at flux levels not yet observed with present-day instruments. Here we report on the spectral and timing analysis of the data from the spectrometer SPI on-board INTEGRAL collected during t…
We present the results of the pulse-amplitude-resolved spectroscopy of the accreting pulsar V 0332+53 using the NuSTAR observations of the source in 2015 and 2016. We investigate the dependence of the energy of the cyclotron resonant scattering feature (CRSF) as a function of X-ray luminosity on timescales comparable with the spin period of the pulsar within individual observations, and the behavior on longer timescales within and between the two observed outbursts. We confirm that in both cases the CRSF energy is negatively correlated with flux at luminosities higher than the critical luminos…
We report results on the timing analysis of the 2020 giant outburst of 1A 0535+262, using broadband data from Insight-HXMT. The analysis of the pulse profile evolution from the sub-critical luminosity to super-critical luminosity regime is presented for the first time. We found that the observed pulse profile exhibits a complex dependence on both energy and luminosity.A dip structure at the energy of the cyclotron resonant scattering features (CRSFs) is found for the first time in the pulse fraction-energy relation of 1A 0535+262, when the outburst evolves in a luminosity range from 4.8 $\time…
OAO 1657-415 is an accreting X-ray pulsar with a high mass companion that has been observed by several telescopes over the years, in different orbital phases. Back in 1999, observations performed with Beppo-SAX lead to the detection of a cyclotron-resonant-scattering feature, which has not been found again with any other instrument. A recent NuSTAR X-ray observation, performed during the brightest phase of the source, allows us to perform sensitive searches for cyclotron-resonant-scattering features in the hard X-ray spectrum of the source. We aim to characterise the source by means of tempora…

Seventeen accreting neutron star pulsars, mostly high mass X-ray binaries with half of them Be-type transients, are known to exhibit Cyclotron Resonance Scattering Features (CRSFs) in their X-ray spectra, with characteristic line energies from 10 to 60 keV. To date about two thirds of them, plus a few similar systems without known CRSFs, have been observed with Suzaku. We present an overview of results from these observations, including the discovery of a CRSF in the transient 1A 1118-61 and pulse phase resolved spectroscopy of GX 301-2. These observations allow for the determination of cyclot…
X-ray spectra of many accreting pulsars exhibit significant variations as a function of flux and thus of mass accretion rate. In some of these pulsars, the centroid energy of the cyclotron line(s), which characterizes the magnetic field strength at the site of the X-ray emission, has been found to vary systematically with flux. GX 304-1 is a recently established cyclotron line source with a line energy around 50 keV. Since 2009, the pulsar shows regular outbursts with the peak flux exceeding one Crab. We analyze the INTEGRAL observations of the source during its outburst in January-February 20…
We report the results from an archival XMM-Newton observation of the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transient (SFXT) IGR J18483-0311 during its apastron passage. The measured 0.5--10 keV luminosity state (1.3$\times10^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$) is the lowest ever reported in the literature, it is best fitted by an absorbed black body model yielding parameters consistent with previous measurements. In addition, we find evidence of an emission line feature at $\sim$3.3 keV in the 0.5--10 keV EPIC-pn source spectrum. We show that its physical explanation in terms of atomic emission line appears unlikely and conv…
Cyclotron resonant scattering features (CRSFs) are formed by scattering of X-ray photons off quantized plasma electrons in the strong magnetic field (of the order 10^12 G) close to the surface of an accreting X-ray pulsar. The line profiles of CRSFs cannot be described by an analytic expression. Numerical methods such as Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of the scattering processes are required in order to predict precise line shapes for a given physical setup, which can be compared to observations to gain information about the underlying physics in these systems. A versatile simulation code is nee…
Cyclotron line scattering features are detected in a few tens of X-ray pulsars (XRPs) and used as direct indicators of a strong magnetic field at the surface of accreting neutron stars (NSs). In a few cases, cyclotron lines are known to be variable with accretion luminosity of XRPs. It is accepted that the observed variations of cyclotron line scattering features are related to variations of geometry and dynamics of accretion flow above the magnetic poles of a NS. A positive correlation between the line centroid energy and luminosity is typical for sub-critical XRPs, where the accretion result…

Sternberg Astronomical Institute, Lomonosov Moscow State University(莫斯科国立大学列昂尼德·斯特恩伯格天体物理研究所);Faculty of Physics, Lomonosov Moscow State University(莫斯科国立大学物理学院)
We report on the observation of the accreting pulsar GRO J1008-57 performed by Insight-HXMT at the peak of the source's 2017 outburst. Pulsations are detected with a spin period of 93.283(1) s. The pulse profile shows double peaks at soft X-rays, and only one peak above 20 keV. The spectrum is well described by the phenomenological models of X-ray pulsars. A cyclotron resonant scattering feature is detected with very high statistical significance at a centroid energy of $E_{\rm cyc}=90.32_{-0.28}^{+0.32}$ keV, for the reference continuum and line models, HIGHECUT and GABS respectively. Detecti…
Context: In addition to coherent pulsation, many accreting neutron stars exhibit flaring activity and strong aperiodic variability on time scales comparable to or shorter than their pulsation period. Such a behavior shows that the accretion flow in the vicinity of the accretor must be highly non-stationary. Observational study of this phenomenon is often problematic as it requires very high statistics of X-ray data and a specific analysis technique. Aims: In our research we used high-resolution data taken with RXTE and INTEGRAL on a sample of bright transient and persistent pulsars, to perform…
We report on the discovery of an absorption line at $E=8.56^{+0.05}_{-0.11}$ keV detected with a significance of $>3.3σ$ in the NuSTAR and XMM-Newton spectra of a newly discovered hyperluminous X-ray source (HLX, $L_{\rm X}>10^{41}$ ergs$^{-1}$) in the galaxy NGC 4045 at a distance of 32 Mpc. The source was first discovered serendipitously in a Swift/XRT observation of the galaxy, and Swift monitoring reveals a highly variable source changing by over an order of magnitude from maximum to minimum. The origin of the absorption line appears likely to be by highly ionized iron with a blue shift of…
Some isolated neutron stars show harmonically spaced absorption features in their thermal soft X-ray spectra. The interpretation of the features as a cyclotron line and its harmonics has been suggested, but the usual explanation of the harmonics as caused by relativistic effects fails because the relativistic corrections are extremely small in this case. We suggest that the features correspond to the peaks in the energy dependence of the free-free opacity in a quantizing magnetic field, known as quantum oscillations. The peaks arise when the transitions to new Landau levels become allowed with…
Accreting X-ray pulsars (XRPs) undergo luminous X-ray outbursts during which the spectral and timing behavior of the neutron star can be studied in detail. We analyze a $NuSTAR$ observation of the XRP XTE J1858+034 during its outburst in 2019. The spectrum is fit with a phenomenological, a semi-empirical and a physical spectral model. A candidate cyclotron line is found at $48\,$keV, implying a magnetic field of $5.4\times10^{\rm 12}\,$G at the site of emission. This is also supported by the physical best-fit model. We propose an orbital period of about $81$ days based on the visual inspection…

The NuSTAR hard X-ray telescope observed the transient Be/X-ray binary GS 0834-430 during its 2012 outburst - the first active state of this system observed in the past 19 years. We performed timing and spectral analysis, and measured the X-ray spectrum between 3-79keV with high statistical significance. We find the phase-averaged spectrum to be consistent with that observed in many other magnetized accreting pulsars. We fail to detect cyclotron resonance scattering features that would allow us to constrain the pulsar's magnetic field in either phase-averaged or phase-resolved spectra. Timing …
