It has been recently discovered that the transition of X-ray pulsars to the low luminosity state ($L\lesssim10^{35}\,{\rm erg\,s^{-1}}$) is accompanied by a dramatic spectral change. Namely, the typical power-law-like spectrum with high energy cutoff transforms into a two-component structure with a possible cyclotron absorption feature on top of it. It was proposed that these spectral characteristics can be explained qualitatively by the emission of cyclotron photons in the atmosphere of the neutron star caused by collisional excitation of electrons to upper Landau levels and further comptonization of the photons by electron gas. The latter is expected to be overheated in a thin top layer of the atmosphere. In this paper, we perform Monte Carlo simulations of the radiative transfer in the atmosphere of an accreting neutron star while accounting for a resonant scattering of polarized X-ray photons by thermally distributed electrons. The spectral shape is shown to be strongly polarization-dependent in soft X-rays ($\lesssim 10\,{\rm keV}$) and near the cyclotron scattering feature. The results of our numerical simulations are tested against the observational data of X-ray pulsar A 0535+262 in the low luminosity state. We show that the spectral shape of the pulsar can be reproduced by the proposed theoretical model. The applications of the discovery to the observational studies of accreting neutron stars are discussed.
186 binary pulsars are shown in the magnetic field versus spin period (B-P) dia- gram, and their relations to the millisecond pulsars can be clearly seen. We declaim a minimum accretion rate for the millisecond pulsar formation both from the observation and theory. If the accretion rate is lower than the minimum accretion rate, the pulsar in binary system will not become a millisecond pulsar after the evolution.
Millisecond radio pulsars have long been proposed to form from a spin-up recycling process in a binary system. In this paper we demonstrate that the accretion-induced field-decay and spin-up model for recycled pulsars can indeed produce those millisecond pulsars with relatively weak magnetic fields of $10^8-10^9$ G and short spin periods of a few milliseconds. Our results also suggest that the value of the currently observed highest spin frequency of millisecond pulsars may simply be constrained by the amount of mass available for accretion.
We present the results from the analysis of the broad-band X-ray spectra of 5 Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs) and Soft $γ$-ray Repeaters (SGRs). We fit their Suzaku and INTEGRAL spectra with models appropriate for the X-ray emission from the accretion flow onto a pulsar. We find that their X-ray spectra can be well described with this model. In particular we find that: (a) the radius of the accretion column is $\sim150-350$ m resulting in a transverse optical depth of $\sim 1$; (b) the vertical Thompson optical depth is $\approx 50-400$, and (c) their luminosity translates in accretion rates $\…
Millisecond x-ray pulsars have weak magnetic dipole moments of $\sim 10^{16}$\,T\,m$^3$ compared to ordinary X-ray pulsars with dipole moments of $10^{20}$\,T\,m$^3$. For this reason a surrounding accretion disc can extend closer to the neutron star, and thus reach a higher temperature, at which the opacity is dominated by electron scattering and radiation pressure is strong. We compute the self-similar structure of such a geometrically thin axisymmetric accretion disc with an internal dynamo. Such models produce significantly stronger torques on the neutron star than models without dynamos, a…
Quasi-spherical accretion in wind-fed X-ray pulsars is discussed. At X-ray luminosities <4 10^{36} erg/s, a hot convective shell is formed around the neutron star magnetosphere, and subsonic settling accretion regime sets in. In this regime, accretion rate onto neutron star is determined by the ability of plasma to enter magnetosphere via Rayleigh-Taylor instability. A gas-dynamic theory of settling accretion is constructed taking into account anisotropic turbulence. The angular momentum can be transferred through the quasi-static shell via large-scale convective motions initiating turbulence …
We perform MHD simulations of a thin resistive and viscous accretion disk around a neutron star with the surface dipolar magnetic field of 10$^8$ Gauss. The system evolution is followed during the interval of 500 millisecond pulsar rotations. Matter is accreted through a stable accretion column from the disk onto the star. We also show propagation of the stellar wind through the corona. Analysis of the mass accretion flux and torques on the star shows that the disk reaches the quasi-stationary state.
The spin behaviour of the neutron star in the newly discovered young Be/X-ray long-period pulsar SXP 1062 is discussed. The star is observed to rotate with the period of 1062s, and spin-down at the rate ~ - 2.6 \times 10^{-12} Hz s^{-1}. I show that all of the conventional accretion scenarios encounter major difficulties explaining the rapid spin-down of the pulsar. These difficulties can be, however, avoided within the magnetic accretion scenario in which the neutron star is assumed to accrete from a magnetized wind. The spin-down rate of the pulsar can be explained within this scenario provi…
For about half a century the radio pulsar population was observed to spin in the ~0.002-12s range, with different pulsar classes having a spin-period evolution that differs substantially depending on their magnetic fields or past accretion history. The recent detection of several slowly rotating pulsars has re-opened the long-standing question of the exact physics, and observational biases, driving the upper bound of the period range of the pulsar population. In this work, we perform a parameter study of the spin-period evolution of pulsars interacting with supernova fallback matter and specif…
The luminosity of X-ray pulsars powered by accretion onto magnetized neutron stars covers a wide range over a few orders of magnitude. The brightest X-ray pulsars recently discovered as pulsating ultraluminous X-ray sources reach accretion luminosity above $10^{40}\,{\rm erg\,s^{-1}}$ which exceeds the Eddington value more than by a factor of ten. Most of the energy is released within small regions in the vicinity of magnetic poles of accreting neutron star - in accretion columns. Because of the extreme energy release within a small volume accretion columns of bright X-ray pulsars are ones of …
We consider combined rotational, magnetic, and thermal evolution of the neutron star during the accretion phase in a binary system. A rapid accretion-driven decay of the magnetic field decreases substantially the efficiency of angular momentum transfer. As a result, the neutron star cannot spin up to periods shorter than some limiting value even if accretion is very long and accretion rate is high. The proposed mechanism can explain a discrepancy between the shortest detected period and minimal possible spin period of neutron stars.
X-ray flux and pulse period fluctuations in an accretion-powered pulsar convey important information about the disk-magnetosphere interaction. It is shown that simultaneous flux and period measurements can be analysed with a Kalman filter based on the standard magnetocentrifugal accretion torque to generate accurate time-dependent estimates of three hidden state variables, which fluctuate stochastically and cannot be measured directly: the mass accretion rate, the Maxwell stress at the disk-magnetosphere boundary, and the radiative efficiency of accretion onto the stellar surface. The inferred…
Radiatively inefficient accretion flow models have been shown to accurately account for the spectrum and luminosity observed from Sgr A* in the X-ray regime down to mm wavelengths. However, observations at a few GHz cannot be explained by thermal electrons alone but require the presence of an additional non-thermal particle population. Here, we propose a model for the origin of such a population in the accretion flow via means of a pulsar orbiting the supermassive black hole in our Galaxy. Interactions between the relativistic pulsar wind with the disc lead to the formation of a bow shock in t…
The magnetic field of ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) pulsars is the key parameter to understand the nature and accretion physics. However, the typical magnetic field values in these ULX pulsars are still under debate. We used six different torque models to study the magnetic fields of ULX pulsars, to see how derived magnetic fields change with different models, and to determine which models are more suitable for ULX pulsars. We took the currently available period, period derivative, and flux data of 7 confirmed ULX pulsars, M82 X-2, ULX NGC 7793 P13, ULX NGC 5907, NGC 300 ULX1, NGC 1313 X-2, M51 UL…
Many millisecond pulsars are thought to be old neutron stars spun up (`recycled') during an earlier accretion phase. They typically have relatively weak ($\lesssim 10^{9} \text{ G}$) dipole field strengths, consistent with accretion-induced magnetic burial. Recent data from the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer indicate that hot spots atop the recycled pulsar PSR J0030$+$0451 are not antipodal, so that the magnetic field cannot be that of a centered dipole. In this paper it is shown that multipolarity is naturally expected in the burial scenario because of equatorial field line compre…
Study of observed spin evolution of long-period X-ray pulsars challenges quasi-spherical and Keplerian disk accretion scenarios. It suggests that the magnetospheric radius of the neutron stars is substantially smaller than Alfven radius and the spin-down torque applied to the star from accreting material significantly exceeds the value predicted by the theory. We show that these problems can be avoided if the fossil magnetic field of the accretion flow itself is incorporated into the accretion model. The initially spherical flow in this case decelerates by its own magnetic field and converts i…
Long expected transition states between the rotation powered and accretion powered non-thermal emission in the millisecond pulsar binary systems have been recently observed in the case of three objects PSR J1023+0038, PSR J1824-2452, and PSR J1227-4859. Surprisingly, the transition is related to the significant change in the $γ$-ray flux being a factor of a few higher with the presence of an accretion disk. The origin of this enhanced emission seems to be related to the penetration of the inner pulsar magnetosphere by the accretion disk. We propose that the radiation processes, characteristic …
This paper investigates the progenitors of Millisecond Pulsars (MSPs) with a distribution of long orbital periods (P_orb > 2 d), to show the link between white dwarf (WD) binaries and long orbits for some binary MSPs through the Accretion Induced Collapse (AIC) of a WD. For this purpose, a model is presented to turn binary MSPs into wide binaries and highly circular orbits (e < 0.1) through the asymmetric kick imparted to the pulsar during the AIC process, which may indicate a sizeable kick velocity along the rotation of the proto-neutron star. The results show the effects of shock wave, bindi…
Possible manifestations of accreting magnetars are discussed. It is shown that the four ultra-luminous X-ray pulsars can be understood in the accreting low magnetic field magnetar scenario. The NGC300 ULX1 pulsar may have a higher dipole magnetic field than other sources. General constraint on their mass accretion rate confirmed their super-Eddington nature. Lower limits on their beaming factor are obtained. They do not seem to have strong beaming. The duty cycle of the ULX burst state can also be constrained by their timing observations. ULX pulsars may be in accretion equilibrium in the long…
We present the discovery of IGR J18245-2452, the first millisecond pulsar observed to swing between a rotation-powered, radio pulsar state, and an accretion-powered X-ray pulsar state (Papitto et al. 2013, Nature, 501, 517). This transitional source represents the most convincing proof of the evolutionary link shared by accreting neutron stars in low mass X-ray binaries, and radio millisecond pulsars. It demonstrates that swings between these two states take place on the same time-scales of luminosity variations of X-ray transients, and are therefore most easily interpreted in terms of changes…
We present results from a pulse phase resolved spectroscopy of the complex emission lines around 1 keV in the unique accretion powered X-ray pulsar 4U 1626-67 using observation made with the XMM-Newton in 2003. In this source, the red and blue shifted emission lines and the line widths measured earlier with Chandra suggest their accretion disk origin. Another possible signature of lines produced in accretion disk can be a modulation of the line strength with pulse phase. We found the line fluxes to have pulse phase dependence, making 4U 1626-67 only the second pulsar after Her X-1 to show such…
The heating associated with the deposition of $γ$-rays in an accretion disk is proposed as a mechanism to facilitate the transformation of a low mass X-ray binary to the radio millisecond pulsar phase. The $γ$-ray emission produced in the outer gap accelerator in the pulsar magnetosphere likely irradiates the surrounding disk, resulting in its heating and to the possible escape of matter from the system. We apply the model to PSR J1023+0038, which has recently been discovered as a newly born rotation powered millisecond pulsar. The predicted $γ$-ray luminosity $\sim 6 \times 10^{34}~\mathrm{er…
This is an overview of pulsar accretion modeling. The physics of pulsar accretion, i.e., the process of plasma flow onto the neutron star surface, can be constrained from the spectral properties of the X-ray source. We discuss a new implementation of the physical continuum model developed by Becker and Wolff (2007, ApJ 654, 435). The model incorporates Comptonized blackbody, bremsstrahlung, and cyclotron emission. We discuss preliminary results of applying the new tool to the test cases of Suzaku data of Cen X-3 and XTE J1946+274. Cen X-3 is a persistent accreting pulsar with an O-star compani…
We report the discovery of burst oscillations from the intermittent accretion-powered millisecond pulsar (AMP) HETE J1900.1-2455, with a frequency approximately 1 Hz below the known spin frequency. The burst oscillation properties are far more similar to those of the non-AMPs and Aql X-1 (an intermittent AMP with a far lower duty cycle), than those of the AMPs SAX J1808.4-3658 and XTE J1814-338. We discuss the implications for models of the burst oscillation and intermittency mechanisms.
The spin-down rate of PSR J1023+0038, one of the three confirmed transitional millisecond pulsars, was measured in both radio pulsar (RMSP) and X-ray pulsar (LMXB) states. The spin-down rate in the LMXB state is only about 27 % greater than in the RMSP state (Jaodand et al. 2016). The inner disk radius, r_in, obtained recently by Ertan (2017) for the propeller phase, which is close to the co-rotation radius, r_co, and insensitive to the mass-flow rate, can explain the observed torques together with the X-ray luminosities, Lx . The X-ray pulsar and radio pulsar states correspond to accretion wi…
Weakly magnetic, millisecond spinning neutron stars attain their very fast rotation through a 1E8-1E9 yr long phase during which they undergo disk-accretion of matter from a low mass companion star. They can be detected as accretion-powered millisecond X-ray pulsars if towards the end of this phase their magnetic field is still strong enough to channel the accreting matter towards the magnetic poles. When mass transfer is much reduced or ceases altogether, pulsed emission generated by particle acceleration in the magnetosphere and powered by the rotation of the neutron star is observed, prefer…
Assuming the wind-fed accretion magnetars in long period X-ray pulsars, we calculated the rotational evolution of the neutron stars. Our calculations considered the effects of the magnetic field decay in magnetars. The results show that wind-fed accretion magnetars can evolve to the long period X-ray pulsars with a spin period much longer than 1000 s. The spin-down trend observed in 4U 2206+54 like sources is expected when the young X-ray binary systems are on the way to their equilibrium period. Detailed calculations showed that its spin-down may be affected by accretion with outflows or accr…
A theoretical model for quasi-spherical subsonic accretion onto slowly rotating magnetized neutron stars is constructed. In this model the accreting matter subsonically settles down onto the rotating magnetosphere forming an extended quasi-static shell. This shell mediates the angular momentum removal from the rotating neutron star magnetosphere during spin-down episodes by large-scale convective motions. The accretion rate through the shell is determined by the ability of the plasma to enter the magnetosphere. The settling regime of accretion can be realized for moderate accretion rates $\dot…
Neutron stars in high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) generally accrete from the wind matter of their massive companion stars. Recently Shakura et al. (2012) suggested a subsonic accretion model for low-luminosity ($<4\times 10^{36}$ ergs$^{-1}$), wind-fed X-ray pulsars. To test the feasibility of this model, we investigate the spin period distribution of wind-fed X-ray pulsars with a supergiant companion star, using a population synthesis method. We find that the modeled distribution of supergiant HMXBs in the spin period - orbital period diagram is consistent with observations provided that the …
We consider a simple scenario for the accretion of matter onto a neutron star in order to understand processes in the inner pulsar magnetosphere during the transition stage between different accretion modes. A simple quasi-spherical accretion process onto rotating, magnetized compact object is analyzed in order to search for the radiative signatures which could appear during transition between ejecting and accreting modes. It is argued that different accretion modes can be present in a single neutron star along different magnetic field lines for specific range of parameters characterising the …
By performing 2.5-dimensional general relativistic radiation magnetohydrodynamic simulations, we demonstrate supercritical accretion onto a non-rotating, magnetized neutron star, where the magnetic field strength of dipole fields is $10^{10}$ G on the star surface. We found the supercritical accretion flow consists of two parts; the accretion columns and the truncated accretion disk. The supercritical accretion disk, which appears far from the neutron star, is truncated at around $\sim 3R_*$ ($R_*=10^6$ cm is the neutron star radius), where the magnetic pressure via the dipole magnetic fields …
We present a coherent timing analysis of the 2003 outburst of the accreting millisecond pulsar XTE J1807-294. We find an upper limit for the spin frequency derivative of 5E-14 Hz/s. The sinusoidal fractional amplitudes of the pulsations are the highest observed among the accreting millisecond pulsars and can reach values of up to 27% (2.5-30 keV). The pulse arrival time residuals of the fundamental follow a linear anti-correlation with the fractional amplitudes that suggests hot spot motion over the surface of the neutron star both in longitude and latitude. An anti-correlation between residua…
We report on the spectral behavior of the first Galactic ultraluminous X-ray pulsar Swift J0243.6+6124 with NuSTAR observations during its 2017-2018 outburst. At sub-Eddington levels, the source spectrum is characterized by three emission components, respectively from the accretion column, the hot spot, and a broad iron line emission region. When the source is above the Eddington limit, the hot spot temperature increases and the spectrum features two more blackbody components. One blackbody component has a radius of 10-20 km and is likely originated from the top of the accretion column. The ot…
The discovery of the ultraluminous X-ray pulsar M82 X-2 has stimulated lively discussion on the nature of the accreting neutron star. In most of the previous studies the magnetic field of the neutron star was derived from the observed spin-up/down rates based on the standard thin, magnetized accretion disk model. However, under super-Eddington accretion the inner part of the accretion disk becomes geometrically thick. In this work we consider both radiation feedback from the neutron star and the sub-Keplerian rotation in a thick disk, and calculate the magnetic moment - mass accretion rate rel…
Observations of the cyclotron resonance scattering feature in the X-ray spectrum of GX 301-2 suggest that the surface field of the neutron star is B_CRSF ~ 4 x 10^{12}G. The same value has been derived in modelling the rapid spin-up episodes in terms of the Keplerian disk accretion scenario. However, the spin-down rate observed during the spin-down trends significantly exceeds the value expected in currently used spin-evolution scenarios. This indicates that either the surface field of the star exceeds 50 x B_CRSF, or a currently used accretion scenario is incomplete. We show that the above di…
X-ray pulsars shine thanks to the conversion of the gravitational energy of accreted material to X-ray radiation. The accretion rate is modulated by geometrical and hydrodynamical effects in the stellar wind of the pulsar companions and/or by instabilities in accretion discs. Wind driven flows are highly unstable close to neutron stars and responsible for X-ray variability by factors $10^3$ on time scale of hours. Disk driven flows feature slower state transitions and quasi periodic oscillations related to orbital motion and precession or resonance. On shorter time scales, and closer to the su…
We investigate some physical characteristics of Millisecond Pulsar (MSP) such as magnetic fields, spin periods and masses, that are produced by Accretion Induced Collapse (AIC) of an accreting white dwarf (WD) in stellar binary systems. We also investigate the changes of these characteristics during the mass-transfer phase of the system in its way to become a MSP. Our approach allows us to follow the changes in magnetic fields and spin periods during the conversion of WDs to MSPs via AIC process. We focus our attention mainly on the massive binary WDs (M > 1.0Msun) forming cataclysmic variable…
The spin-down mechanism of accreting neutron stars is discussed with an application to one of the best studied X-ray pulsars GX 301-2. We show that the maximum possible spin-down torque applied to a neutron star from the accretion flow can be evaluated as $K_{\rm sd}^{\rm (t)} = μ^2/(r_{\rm m} r_{\rm cor})^{3/2}$. The spin-down rate of the neutron star in GX 301-2 can be explained provided the magnetospheric radius of the neutron star is smaller than its canonical value. We calculate the magnetospheric radius considering the mass-transfer in the binary system in the frame of the magnetic accre…
In the work we present the results of two deep broad-band observations of the poorly studied X-ray pulsar IGR J19294+1816 obtained with the NuSTAR observatory. The source was observed during Type I outburst and in the quiescent state. In the bright state a cyclotron absorption line in the energy spectrum was discovered at $E_{\rm cyc}=42.8\pm0.7$ keV. Spectral and timing analysis prove the ongoing accretion also during the quiescent state of the source. Based on the long-term flux evolution, particularly on the transition of the source to the bright quiescent state with luminosity around $10^{…
A simple and natural explanation for the minimum period of millisecond pulsars follows from a correlation between the accretion rate and the frozen surface dipole magnetic field resulting from Ohmic diffusion through the neutron star crust in initial stages of accretion in low mass X-ray binaries.
It is thought that neutron stars in low-mass binary systems can accrete matter and angular momentum from the companion star and be spun-up to millisecond rotational periods. During the accretion stage, the system is called a low-mass X-ray binary, and bright X-ray emission is observed. When the rate of mass transfer decreases in the later evolutionary stages, these binaries host a radio millisecond pulsar whose emission is powered by the neutron star's rotating magnetic field. This evolutionary model is supported by the detection of millisecond X-ray pulsations from several accreting neutron s…
Binary radio pulsars are generally believed to have been spun up to millisecond periods (i.e. recycling) via mass accretion from their donor stars, and they are the descendants of neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries. However, some studies indicate that the formation of pulsars from the accretion-induced collapse (AIC) of accreting white dwarfs (WDs) cannot be excluded. In this work, we use a population synthesis code to examine if the AIC channel can produce eccentric binary millisecond pulsars (BMSPs) in the Galaxy. Our simulated results indicate that, only when the natal MSPs receive a rela…
Three high-mass X-ray binaries have been discovered recently exhibiting enormous spinup rates. Conventional accretion theory predicts extremely high surface dipolar magnetic fields that we believe are unphysical. Instead, we propose quite the opposite scenario: some of these pulsars exhibit weak magnetic fields, so much so that their magnetospheres are crushed by the weight of inflowing matter. The enormous spinup rate is achieved before inflowing matter reaches the pulsar's surface as the penetrating inner disk transfers its excess angular momentum to the receding magnetosphere which, in turn…
It has been reported that there are two populations of Be/X-ray pulsars, with the pulse period distribution peaked at $\sim$ 10 s and $\sim$ 200 s, respectively. A possible explanation of this bimodal distribution is related to different accretion modes in Be/X-ray binaries. In this work, we investigate the spin evolution of Be/X-ray pulsars based on the magnetically threaded accretion disk model. Compared with previous works, we take into account several distinct and important factors of Be/X-ray binaries, including the transient accretion behavior and possible change of the accretion disk st…
X-ray reflection signatures are observed around multiple classes of accreting compact objects. Modelling these features yield important constraints on the physics of accretion disks, motivating the development of X-ray reflection models appropriate for a variety of systems and illumination conditions. Here, constant density ionized X-ray reflection models are presented for a disk irradiated with a very hard power-law X-ray spectrum (Γ< 1) and a variable high-energy cutoff. These models are then applied to the Suzaku data of the accreting X-ray pulsar LMC X-4, where very good fits are obtained …
In this work we have estimated upper and lower limits to the strength of the magnetic dipole moment of all 14 accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars observed with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). For each source we searched the archival RXTE data for the highest and lowest flux levels with a significant detection of pulsations. We assume these flux levels to correspond to the closest and farthest location of the inner edge of the accretion disk at which channelled accretion takes place. By estimating the accretion rate from the observed luminosity at these two flux levels, we place upper a…
The dynamics of the plasma in the inner regions of an accretion disk around accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars is controlled by the magnetic field of the neutron star. The interaction between an accretion disk and a strong magnetic field is not well-understood, particularly at low accretion rates (the so-called ``propeller regime'). This is due in part to the lack of clear observational diagnostics to constrain the physics of the disk-field interaction. Here we associate the strong ~1 Hz modulation seen in the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar NGC 6440 X-2 with an instability that arises whe…
Based on the model of the accretion-induced magnetic field decay of a neutron star (NS), millisecond pulsars (MSPs) will obtain their minimum magnetic field when the NS magnetosphere radius shrinks to the stellar surface during the binary accretion phase. We find that this minimummagnetic field is related to the accretion rate Mdot as Bmin ~2.0*10^7 G( Mdot/Mdot_min)^1/2, where Mdot_min = 4.6*10^15 g/s is the average minimum accretion rate required for MSP formation and is constrained by the long-term accretion time, which corresponds to the companion lifetime, being less than the Hubble time.…
We report on the first focused hard X-ray view of the absorbed supergiant system IGRJ18027-2016 performed with the NuSTAR observatory. The pulsations are clearly detected with a period of $P_{spin}=139.866(1)$ s and a pulse fraction of about 50-60% at energies from 3 to 80 keV. The source demonstrates an approximately constant X-ray luminosity on a time scale of more than dozen years with an average spin-down rate of $dP/dt\simeq6\times10^{-10}$ s/s. This behaviour of the pulsar can be explained in terms of the wind accretion model in the settling regime. The detailed spectral analysis at ener…
The X-ray line diagnostic method is a powerful tool for an investigation of plasma around accretion-powered X-ray pulsars. We point out an apparent intensity modulation of emission lines with their rotation period of neutron stars, due to the finite speed of light (we call this effect "finite light speed effect"), if the line emission mechanism is a kind of reprocessing, such as fluorescence or recombination after ionization by X-ray irradiation from pulsars. The modulation amplitude is determined by the size of the emission region, in competition with the smearing effect by the light crossing…
We report the first discovery of pulse phase modulating optical depths at the iron K-edge in accretion-powered X-ray pulsars, from Suzaku observations. A significant modulating optical depth of the iron K-edge is detected for Vela X-1 and GX 1+4. Similar trends are seen in GX 301-2 and OAO 1657-415, though with poor statistical significance. The observed iron K-edge exhibits a maximum optical depth, when the X-ray continuum dims, and there is no significant pulse phase variation in the ionization state of iron. The revealed changes in the optical depth with pulse phase can be explained as bein…
The mechanism that can be responsible for the bimodal luminosity distribution of super-Eddington X-ray pulsars in binary systems is pointed out. The transition from the high to low state of these objects is explained by accretion flow spherization due to the radiation pressure at certain (high) accretion rates. The transition between the states can be associated with a gradual change in the accretion rate. The complex behavior of the recently discovered ultraluminous X-ray pulsars M 82 X-2, NGC 5907 ULX-1, and NGC 7793 P13 is explained by the proposed mechanism. The proposed model also natural…
Context: In addition to coherent pulsation, many accreting neutron stars exhibit flaring activity and strong aperiodic variability on time scales comparable to or shorter than their pulsation period. Such a behavior shows that the accretion flow in the vicinity of the accretor must be highly non-stationary. Observational study of this phenomenon is often problematic as it requires very high statistics of X-ray data and a specific analysis technique. Aims: In our research we used high-resolution data taken with RXTE and INTEGRAL on a sample of bright transient and persistent pulsars, to perform…
Rotation-powered millisecond radio pulsars have been spun up to their present spin period by a $10^8$ - $10^9$ yr long X-ray-bright phase of accretion of matter and angular momentum in a low-to-intermediate mass binary system. Recently, the discovery of transitional pulsars that alternate cyclically between accretion and rotation-powered states on time scales of a few years or shorter, has demonstrated this evolutionary scenario. Here, we present a thorough statistical analysis of the spin distributions of the various classes of millisecond pulsars to assess the evolution of their spin period …
We present the first detection of X-ray coherent pulsations from the transitional millisecond pulsar XSS J12270-4859, while it was in a sub-luminous accretion disk state characterized by a 0.5-10 keV luminosity of 5E33 erg/s (assuming a distance of 1.4 kpc). Pulsations were observed by XMM-Newton at an rms amplitude of (7.7 +/- 0.5)% with a second harmonic stronger than the the fundamental frequency, and were detected when the source is neither flaring nor dipping. The most likely interpretation of this detection is that matter from the accretion disk was channelled by the neutron star magneto…
We investigate aperiodic X-ray flux variability in accreting highly magnetized neutron stars - X-ray pulsars (XRPs). The X-ray variability is largely determined by mass accretion rate fluctuations at the NS surface, which replicate accretion rate fluctuations at the inner radius of the accretion disc. The variability at the inner radius is due to fluctuations arising all over the disc and propagating inwards under the influence of viscous diffusion. The inner radius varies with mean mass accretion rate and can be estimated from the known magnetic field strength and accretion luminosity of XRPs…
Recently, extra motivation has been given to the investigations of an unresolved problem of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) produced by the recycling process, as an apparent role of the accretion-induced collapse (AIC) in white dwarfs (WDs) was suggested to this concern. I have found that the distribution of the orbital periods of binary MSPs in the Galactic disk closely follows an exponential distribution. I have also determined the best-fit mean value of Nobs by fitting our data with an exponential distribution for the MSP population. As a result, it can be stated that reaching the Chandrasekhar …
There is accumulating evidence for mass ejection in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) driven by radio pulsar activity during X-ray quiescence. In this paper we consider the condition for mass ejection by comparing the radiation pressure from a millisecond pulsar, and the gas pressure at the inner Lagrange point or at the surrounding accretion disk. We calculate the critical spin period of the pulsar below which mass ejection is allowed. Combining with the evolution of the mass transfer rate, we present constraints on the orbital periods of the systems. We show that mass ejection could happen in …
Recent observations strongly suggest that the millisecond pulsar binary PSR J1023+0038 has developed an accretion disk since 2013 June. We present a multi-wavelength analysis of PSR J1023+0038, which reveals that 1) its gamma-rays suddenly brightened within a few days in June/July 2013 and has remained at a high gamma-ray state for several months; 2) both UV and X-ray fluxes have increased by roughly an order of magnitude, and 3) the spectral energy distribution has changed significantly after the gamma-ray sudden flux change. Time variabilities associated with UV and X-rays are on the order o…
IGR J18245-2452 is the fifteenth discovered accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar and the first source of this class showing direct evidence for transition between accretion and rotational powered emission states.
