In the present paper, a fluid-particle coupling method is directly derived from the Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) by applying the concept of volume-filtering, yielding a physically consistent methodology to incorporate solid wall boundary conditions in the volume-filtered flow solution, thereby allowing to solve the governing flow equations on non-body conforming meshes. The resulting methodology possesses similarities with a continuous forcing immersed boundary method (IBM) and is, therefore, termed physically consistent IBM (PC-IBM). Based on the recent findings of arXiv:2402.05842v1, the closures arising in the volume-filtered NSE are closed by suitable models or even expressed analytically. The PC-IBM is fully compatible with the large eddy simulation framework, as the volume-filtered NSE converge to the filtered NSE away from solid boundaries. The potential of the PC-IBM is demonstrated by means of different particle-laden flow applications, including a dense packing of fixed particles and periodic settling of 500 particles. The new methodology turns out to be capable of accurately predicting the fluid forces on particles with relatively coarse mesh resolutions. For the flow around isolated spheres, a spatial resolution of six fluid mesh cells per diameter is sufficient to predict the drag force with less than 10% deviation from highly resolved simulation for the investigated particle Reynolds numbers ranging from 10 to 250.

We introduce an immersed high-order discontinuous Galerkin method for solving the compressible Navier-Stokes equations on non-boundary-fitted meshes. The flow equations are discretised with a mixed discontinuous Galerkin formulation and are advanced in time with an explicit time marching scheme. The discretisation meshes may contain simplicial (triangular or tetrahedral) elements of different sizes and need not be structured. On the discretisation mesh the fluid domain boundary is represented with an implicit signed distance function. The cut-elements partially covered by the solid domain are …
This paper sums up some recent validations of an immersed boundary method for compressible flow simulations. It has been already shown that this method is able to provide accurate results without meshing effort around more or less complex geometries. Here, the authors focus on several simple test cases to assess the application range of the method. From subsonic to hypersonic flows, from steady to large-eddy unsteady simulations, in 2D or 3D, results are compared to classical simulations with body-fitted meshes and experiment. Moreover, the use of an efficient Navier-Stokes solver for all the …
An important class of fluid-structure problems involve the dynamics of ordered arrays of immersed, flexible fibers. While specialized numerical methods have been developed to study fluid-fiber systems, they become infeasible when there are many, rather than a few, fibers present, nor do these methods lend themselves to analytical calculation. Here, we introduce a coarse-grained continuum model, based on local-slender body theory, for elastic fibers immersed in a viscous Newtonian fluid. It takes the form of an anisotropic Brinkman equation whose skeletal drag is coupled to elastic forces. This…
The treatment of complex geometries in Computational Fluid Dynamics applications is a challenging endeavor, which immersed boundary and cut-cell techniques can significantly simplify by alleviating the meshing process required by body-fitted meshes. These methods however introduce new challenges, as the formulation of accurate and well-posed discrete operators becomes nontrivial. Here, a conservative cartesian cut cell method is proposed for the solution of the incompressible Navier--Stokes equation on staggered Cartesian grids. Emphasis is set on the structure of the discrete operators, desig…
Meshing is a critical, but user-intensive process necessary for stable and accurate simulations in computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Mesh generation is often a bottleneck in CFD pipelines. Adaptive meshing techniques allow the mesh to be updated automatically to produce an accurate solution for the problem at hand. Existing classical techniques for adaptive meshing require either additional functionality out of solvers, many training simulations, or both. Current machine learning techniques often require substantial computational cost for training data generation, and are restricted in scope…
We present a variant of the immersed boundary method integrated with octree meshes for highly efficient and accurate Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) of flows around complex geometries. We demonstrate the scalability of the proposed method up to $\mathcal{O}(32K)$ processors. This is achieved by (a) rapid in-out tests; (b) adaptive quadrature for an accurate evaluation of forces; (c) tensorized evaluation during matrix assembly. We showcase this method on two non-trivial applications: accurately computing the drag coefficient of a sphere across Reynolds numbers $1-10^6$ encompassing the drag crisi…

Small-scale features of shallow water flow obtained from direct numerical simulation (DNS) with two different computational codes for the shallow water equations are gathered offline and subsequently employed with the aim of constructing a reduced-order correction. This is used to facilitate high-fidelity online flow predictions at much reduced costs on coarse meshes. The resolved small-scale features at high resolution represent subgrid properties for the coarse representation. Measurements of the subgrid dynamics are obtained as the difference between the evolution of a coarse grid solution …
To design a method to solve the issues of handling 'dirty' and highly complex geometries, the topology-free method combined with the immersed boundary method is presented for viscous and incompressible flows at a high Reynolds number. The method simultaneously employs a ghost-cell technique and distributed forcing technique to impose the boundary conditions. An axis-projected interpolation scheme is used to avoid searching failures during fluid and solid identification. This method yields a topology-free immersed boundary, which particularly suits flow simulations of highly complex geometries.…
