Recent advancements in text-to-speech (TTS) powered by language models have showcased remarkable capabilities in achieving naturalness and zero-shot voice cloning. Notably, the decoder-only transformer is the prominent architecture in this domain. However, transformers face challenges stemming from their quadratic complexity in sequence length, impeding training on lengthy sequences and resource-constrained hardware. Moreover they lack specific inductive bias with regards to the monotonic nature of TTS alignments. In response, we propose to replace transformers with emerging recurrent architectures and introduce specialized cross-attention mechanisms for reducing repeating and skipping issues. Consequently our architecture can be efficiently trained on long samples and achieve state-of-the-art zero-shot voice cloning against baselines of comparable size. Our implementation and demos are available at https://github.com/theodorblackbird/lina-speech.
We introduce the first unsupervised speech synthesis system based on a simple, yet effective recipe. The framework leverages recent work in unsupervised speech recognition as well as existing neural-based speech synthesis. Using only unlabeled speech audio and unlabeled text as well as a lexicon, our method enables speech synthesis without the need for a human-labeled corpus. Experiments demonstrate the unsupervised system can synthesize speech similar to a supervised counterpart in terms of naturalness and intelligibility measured by human evaluation.

This paper integrates a classic mel-cepstral synthesis filter into a modern neural speech synthesis system towards end-to-end controllable speech synthesis. Since the mel-cepstral synthesis filter is explicitly embedded in neural waveform models in the proposed system, both voice characteristics and the pitch of synthesized speech are highly controlled via a frequency warping parameter and fundamental frequency, respectively. We implement the mel-cepstral synthesis filter as a differentiable and GPU-friendly module to enable the acoustic and waveform models in the proposed system to be simulta…
Speech synthesis might hold the key to low-resource speech recognition. Data augmentation techniques have become an essential part of modern speech recognition training. Yet, they are simple, naive, and rarely reflect real-world conditions. Meanwhile, speech synthesis techniques have been rapidly getting closer to the goal of achieving human-like speech. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of using synthesized speech as a form of data augmentation to lower the resources necessary to build a speech recognizer. We experiment with three different kinds of synthesizers: statistical param…
As an indispensable part of modern human-computer interaction system, speech synthesis technology helps users get the output of intelligent machine more easily and intuitively, thus has attracted more and more attention. Due to the limitations of high complexity and low efficiency of traditional speech synthesis technology, the current research focus is the deep learning-based end-to-end speech synthesis technology, which has more powerful modeling ability and a simpler pipeline. It mainly consists of three modules: text front-end, acoustic model, and vocoder. This paper reviews the research s…

Recently, speech representation learning has improved many speech-related tasks such as speech recognition, speech classification, and speech-to-text translation. However, all the above tasks are in the direction of speech understanding, but for the inverse direction, speech synthesis, the potential of representation learning is yet to be realized, due to the challenging nature of generating high-quality speech. To address this problem, we propose our framework, Alignment-Aware Acoustic-Text Pretraining (A$^3$T), which reconstructs masked acoustic signals with text input and acoustic-text alig…
Speech-to-speech translation (S2ST) converts input speech to speech in another language. A challenge of delivering S2ST in real time is the accumulated delay between the translation and speech synthesis modules. While recently incremental text-to-speech (iTTS) models have shown large quality improvements, they typically require additional future text inputs to reach optimal performance. In this work, we minimize the initial waiting time of iTTS by adapting the upstream speech translator to generate high-quality pseudo lookahead for the speech synthesizer. After mitigating the initial delay, we…
Currently, there are increasing interests in text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis to use sequence-to-sequence models with attention. These models are end-to-end meaning that they learn both co-articulation and duration properties directly from text and speech. Since these models are entirely data-driven, they need large amounts of data to generate synthetic speech with good quality. However, in challenging speaking styles, such as Lombard speech, it is difficult to record sufficiently large speech corpora. Therefore, in this study we propose a transfer learning method to adapt a sequence-to-sequence…

This paper introduces a multi-scale speech style modeling method for end-to-end expressive speech synthesis. The proposed method employs a multi-scale reference encoder to extract both the global-scale utterance-level and the local-scale quasi-phoneme-level style features of the target speech, which are then fed into the speech synthesis model as an extension to the input phoneme sequence. During training time, the multi-scale style model could be jointly trained with the speech synthesis model in an end-to-end fashion. By applying the proposed method to style transfer task, experimental resul…
This paper presents fairseq S^2, a fairseq extension for speech synthesis. We implement a number of autoregressive (AR) and non-AR text-to-speech models, and their multi-speaker variants. To enable training speech synthesis models with less curated data, a number of preprocessing tools are built and their importance is shown empirically. To facilitate faster iteration of development and analysis, a suite of automatic metrics is included. Apart from the features added specifically for this extension, fairseq S^2 also benefits from the scalability offered by fairseq and can be easily integrated …
Statistical parametric speech synthesizers have recently shown their ability to produce natural-sounding and flexible voices. Unfortunately the delivered quality suffers from a typical buzziness due to the fact that speech is vocoded. This paper proposes a new excitation model in order to reduce this undesirable effect. This model is based on the decomposition of pitch-synchronous residual frames on an orthonormal basis obtained by Principal Component Analysis. This basis contains a limited number of eigenresiduals and is computed on a relatively small speech database. A stream of PCA-based co…

Recent advances in neural autoregressive models have improve the performance of speech synthesis (SS). However, as they lack the ability to model global characteristics of speech (such as speaker individualities or speaking styles), particularly when these characteristics have not been labeled, making neural autoregressive SS systems more expressive is still an open issue. In this paper, we propose to combine VoiceLoop, an autoregressive SS model, with Variational Autoencoder (VAE). This approach, unlike traditional autoregressive SS systems, uses VAE to model the global characteristics explic…

Recent expressive text to speech (TTS) models focus on synthesizing emotional speech, but some fine-grained styles such as intonation are neglected. In this paper, we propose QI-TTS which aims to better transfer and control intonation to further deliver the speaker's questioning intention while transferring emotion from reference speech. We propose a multi-style extractor to extract style embedding from two different levels. While the sentence level represents emotion, the final syllable level represents intonation. For fine-grained intonation control, we use relative attributes to represent i…

The development of pathological speech systems is currently hindered by the lack of a standardised objective evaluation framework. In this work, (1) we utilise existing detection and analysis techniques to propose a general framework for the consistent evaluation of synthetic pathological speech. This framework evaluates the voice quality and the intelligibility aspects of speech and is shown to be complementary using our experiments. (2) Using our proposed evaluation framework, we develop and test a dysarthric voice conversion system (VC) using CycleGAN-VC and a PSOLA-based speech rate modifi…
Audiovisual speech synthesis is the problem of synthesizing a talking face while maximizing the coherency of the acoustic and visual speech. In this paper, we propose and compare two audiovisual speech synthesis systems for 3D face models. The first system is the AVTacotron2, which is an end-to-end text-to-audiovisual speech synthesizer based on the Tacotron2 architecture. AVTacotron2 converts a sequence of phonemes representing the sentence to synthesize into a sequence of acoustic features and the corresponding controllers of a face model. The output acoustic features are used to condition a…

Speech synthesis has come a long way as current text-to-speech (TTS) models can now generate natural human-sounding speech. However, most of the TTS research focuses on using adult speech data and there has been very limited work done on child speech synthesis. This study developed and validated a training pipeline for fine-tuning state-of-the-art (SOTA) neural TTS models using child speech datasets. This approach adopts a multi-speaker TTS retuning workflow to provide a transfer-learning pipeline. A publicly available child speech dataset was cleaned to provide a smaller subset of approximate…
In this paper, we construct a Japanese audiobook speech corpus called "J-MAC" for speech synthesis research. With the success of reading-style speech synthesis, the research target is shifting to tasks that use complicated contexts. Audiobook speech synthesis is a good example that requires cross-sentence, expressiveness, etc. Unlike reading-style speech, speaker-specific expressiveness in audiobook speech also becomes the context. To enhance this research, we propose a method of constructing a corpus from audiobooks read by professional speakers. From many audiobooks and their texts, our meth…

In this paper we propose Flowtron: an autoregressive flow-based generative network for text-to-speech synthesis with control over speech variation and style transfer. Flowtron borrows insights from IAF and revamps Tacotron in order to provide high-quality and expressive mel-spectrogram synthesis. Flowtron is optimized by maximizing the likelihood of the training data, which makes training simple and stable. Flowtron learns an invertible mapping of data to a latent space that can be manipulated to control many aspects of speech synthesis (pitch, tone, speech rate, cadence, accent). Our mean opi…
Speech synthesis is widely used in many practical applications. In recent years, speech synthesis technology has developed rapidly. However, one of the reasons why synthetic speech is unnatural is that it often has over-smoothness. In order to improve the naturalness of synthetic speech, we first extract the mel-spectrogram of speech and convert it into a real image, then take the over-smooth mel-spectrogram image as input, and use image-to-image translation Generative Adversarial Networks(GANs) framework to generate a more realistic mel-spectrogram. Finally, the results show that this method …

Text-to-Speech (TTS) synthesis plays an important role in human-computer interaction. Currently, most TTS technologies focus on the naturalness of speech, namely, making the speeches sound like humans. However, the key tasks of the expression of emotion and the speaker identity are ignored, which limits the application scenarios of TTS synthesis technology. To make the synthesized speech more realistic and expand the application scenarios, we propose a multi-task anthropomorphic speech synthesis framework (MASS), which can synthesize speeches from text with specified emotion and speaker identit…
We propose prosody embeddings for emotional and expressive speech synthesis networks. The proposed methods introduce temporal structures in the embedding networks, thus enabling fine-grained control of the speaking style of the synthesized speech. The temporal structures can be designed either on the speech side or the text side, leading to different control resolutions in time. The prosody embedding networks are plugged into end-to-end speech synthesis networks and trained without any other supervision except for the target speech for synthesizing. It is demonstrated that the prosody embeddin…

Speech synthesis is one of the challenging tasks to automate by deep learning, also being a low-resource language there are very few attempts at Bangla speech synthesis. Most of the existing works can't work with anything other than simple Bangla characters script, very short sentences, etc. This work attempts to solve these problems by introducing Byakta, the first-ever open-source deep learning-based bilingual (Bangla and English) text to a speech synthesis system. A speech recognition model-based automated scoring metric was also proposed to evaluate the performance of a TTS model. We also …

This paper proposes a new architecture for speaker adaptation of multi-speaker neural-network speech synthesis systems, in which an unseen speaker's voice can be built using a relatively small amount of speech data without transcriptions. This is sometimes called "unsupervised speaker adaptation". More specifically, we concatenate the layers to the audio inputs when performing unsupervised speaker adaptation while we concatenate them to the text inputs when synthesizing speech from text. Two new training schemes for the new architecture are also proposed in this paper. These training schemes a…
The goal of Text-to-Speech (TTS) synthesis in a particular language is to convert arbitrary input text to intelligible and natural sounding speech. However, for a particular language like Hindi, which is a highly confusing language (due to very close spellings), it is not an easy task to identify errors/mistakes in input text and an incorrect text degrade the quality of output speech hence this paper is a contribution to the development of high quality speech synthesis with the involvement of Spellchecker which generates spell suggestions for misspelled words automatically. Involvement of spel…

In this work, we extend ClariNet (Ping et al., 2019), a fully end-to-end speech synthesis model (i.e., text-to-wave), to generate high-fidelity speech from multiple speakers. To model the unique characteristic of different voices, low dimensional trainable speaker embeddings are shared across each component of ClariNet and trained together with the rest of the model. We demonstrate that the multi-speaker ClariNet outperforms state-of-the-art systems in terms of naturalness, because the whole model is jointly optimized in an end-to-end manner.

The paper presents the capability of an HMM-based TTS system to produce Bengali speech. In this synthesis method, trajectories of speech parameters are generated from the trained Hidden Markov Models. A final speech waveform is synthesized from those speech parameters. In our experiments, spectral properties were represented by Mel Cepstrum Coefficients. Both the training and synthesis issues are investigated in this paper using annotated Bengali speech database. Experimental evaluation depicts that the developed text-to-speech system is capable of producing adequately natural speech in terms …

To date, various speech technology systems have adopted the vocoder approach, a method for synthesizing speech waveform that shows a major role in the performance of statistical parametric speech synthesis. WaveNet one of the best models that nearly resembles the human voice, has to generate a waveform in a time consuming sequential manner with an extremely complex structure of its neural networks.

Although there are more than 6,500 languages in the world, the pronunciations of many phonemes sound similar across the languages. When people learn a foreign language, their pronunciation often reflects their native language's characteristics. This motivates us to investigate how the speech synthesis network learns the pronunciation from datasets from different languages. In this study, we are interested in analyzing and taking advantage of multilingual speech synthesis network. First, we train the speech synthesis network bilingually in English and Korean and analyze how the network learns t…
Statistical TTS systems that directly predict the speech waveform have recently reported improvements in synthesis quality. This investigation evaluates Amazon's statistical speech waveform synthesis (SSWS) system. An in-depth evaluation of SSWS is conducted across a number of domains to better understand the consistency in quality. The results of this evaluation are validated by repeating the procedure on a separate group of testers. Finally, an analysis of the nature of speech errors of SSWS compared to hybrid unit selection synthesis is conducted to identify the strengths and weaknesses of …
Recent advances in text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis, such as Tacotron and WaveRNN, have made it possible to construct a fully neural network based TTS system, by coupling the two components together. Such a system is conceptually simple as it only takes grapheme or phoneme input, uses Mel-spectrogram as an intermediate feature, and directly generates speech samples. The system achieves quality equal or close to natural speech. However, the high computational cost of the system and issues with robustness have limited their usage in real-world speech synthesis applications and products. In this pa…
Neural speech synthesis models have recently demonstrated the ability to synthesize high quality speech for text-to-speech and compression applications. These new models often require powerful GPUs to achieve real-time operation, so being able to reduce their complexity would open the way for many new applications. We propose LPCNet, a WaveRNN variant that combines linear prediction with recurrent neural networks to significantly improve the efficiency of speech synthesis. We demonstrate that LPCNet can achieve significantly higher quality than WaveRNN for the same network size and that high q…
Output from statistical parametric speech synthesis (SPSS) remains noticeably worse than natural speech recordings in terms of quality, naturalness, speaker similarity, and intelligibility in noise. There are many hypotheses regarding the origins of these shortcomings, but these hypotheses are often kept vague and presented without empirical evidence that could confirm and quantify how a specific shortcoming contributes to imperfections in the synthesised speech. Throughout speech synthesis literature, surprisingly little work is dedicated towards identifying the perceptually most important pr…
This paper presents a novel design of neural network system for fine-grained style modeling, transfer and prediction in expressive text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis. Fine-grained modeling is realized by extracting style embeddings from the mel-spectrograms of phone-level speech segments. Collaborative learning and adversarial learning strategies are applied in order to achieve effective disentanglement of content and style factors in speech and alleviate the "content leakage" problem in style modeling. The proposed system can be used for varying-content speech style transfer in the single-speaker…

Expressive synthetic speech is essential for many human-computer interaction and audio broadcast scenarios, and thus synthesizing expressive speech has attracted much attention in recent years. Previous methods performed the expressive speech synthesis either with explicit labels or with a fixed-length style embedding extracted from reference audio, both of which can only learn an average style and thus ignores the multi-scale nature of speech prosody. In this paper, we propose MsEmoTTS, a multi-scale emotional speech synthesis framework, to model the emotion from different levels. Specificall…

State-of-the-art Variational Auto-Encoders (VAEs) for learning disentangled latent representations give impressive results in discovering features like pitch, pause duration, and accent in speech data, leading to highly controllable text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis. However, these LSTM-based VAEs fail to learn latent clusters of speaker attributes when trained on either limited or noisy datasets. Further, different latent variables start encoding the same features, limiting the control and expressiveness during speech synthesis. To resolve these issues, we propose RTI-VAE (Reordered Transformer …
Neural text-to-speech (TTS) approaches generally require a huge number of high quality speech data, which makes it difficult to obtain such a dataset with extra emotion labels. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for emotional TTS synthesis on a TTS dataset without emotion labels. Specifically, our proposed method consists of a cross-domain speech emotion recognition (SER) model and an emotional TTS model. Firstly, we train the cross-domain SER model on both SER and TTS datasets. Then, we use emotion labels on the TTS dataset predicted by the trained SER model to build an auxiliary SER …
