We address the question of how to build a class of $f(R)$ extensions of General Relativity which are compatible with solar system experiments, without making any preliminary assumption on the properties of $f$. The aim is reached by perturbatively solving the modified Einstein equations around a Schwarzschild background and retrieving a posteriori the corresponding $f(R)$. This turns out to be non analytical in $R=0$ and should be intended as the leading correction to the Einstein-Hilbert action in the low curvature limit. The parameters characterizing the $f(R)$ class are then set by constraining the corrections to four different local tests with the observations. The result is a class of $f(R)$ theories built up from a purely bottom-up approach and compatible with the local tests. At a more general level, this result can help constraining exact $f(R)$ models working in Cosmology, since it provides the correct local limit. Further developments and possible extensions of the approach to Cosmology are also discussed.
Within the general class of Asymptotically Anti-de Sitter spacetimes that are asymptotic to the A-de-S Schwarzschild metric, we give a simple positive mass theorem based on arguments from causal structure. A general result for all asymptotically A-de-S spacetimes will be given elsewhere.
In this paper, we analyze the Schwarzschild-like wormhole in the Asymptotically Safe Gravity(ASG) scenario. The ASG corrections are implemented via renormalization group methods, which, as consequence, provides a new tensor $X_{μν}$ as a source to improved field equations, and promotes the Newton's constant into a running coupling constant. In particular, we check whether the radial energy conditions are satisfied and compare with the results obtained from the usual theory. We show that only in the particular case of the wormhole being asymptotically flat(Schwarzschild Wormholes) that the radi…

By studying the notion of a fundamentally minimal length scale in asymptotically safe gravity we find that a specific version of deformed special relativity (DSR) naturally arises in this approach. We then consider two thought experiments to examine the interpretation of the scenario and discuss similarities and differences to other approaches to DSR.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity (1915-2015). The first nontrivial solution of the Einstein field equations was derived by Karl Schwarzschild in 1916. This Note will focus mainly on the Schwarzschild solution and the remarkable developments which it inspired, the most dramatic being the prediction of black holes. Later extensions of Schwarzschild's spacetime structure has led to even wilder conjectures, such as white holes and passages to other universes. Penrose diagrams are introduced as compact representations of extended spacetime structures.…
Recently, it has been found that, with the Rényi statistics, the asymptotically flat Schwarzschild black hole can be in thermal equilibrium with infinite heat reservior at a fixed temperature when its event horizon radius is larger than the characteristic length scale $L_λ=1/\sqrt{πλ}$, where $λ$ is the nonextensivity parameter. In the Rényi extended phase space with the $PdV$ work term, an off-shell free energy in the canonical ensemble with the thermodynamic volume as an order parameter is considered to identify a first-order Hawking-Page (HP) phase transition as a solid/liquid phase transit…
We briefly revisit the Schwarzschild-de Sitter solution in the context of five-dimensional general relativity. We obtain a class of five-dimensional solutions of Einstein vacuum field equations into which the four-dimensional Schwarzschild-de Sitter space can be locally and isometrically embedded. We show that this class of solutions is well-behaved in the limit of lambda approaching zero. Applying the same procedure to the de Sitter cosmological model in five dimensions we obtain a class of embedding spaces which are similarly well-behaved in this limit. These examples demonstrate that the pr…
The second Bianchi identity can be recast as an evolution equation for the Riemann curvatures. Here we will report on such a system for a vacuum static spherically symmetric spacetime. This is the first of two papers. In the following paper we will extend the ideas developed here to general vacuum spacetimes. In this paper we will demonstrate our ideas on a Schwarzschild spacetime and give detailed numerical results. For suitable choices of lapse function we find that the system gives excellent results with long term stability.
We investigate static and spherically symmetric solutions in the Minimal Theory of Bigravity (MTBG). First, we show that a pair of Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes with different cosmological constants and black hole masses written in the spatially-flat Gullstrand-Painlevé (GP) coordinates is a solution in the self-accelerating branch of MTBG, while it cannot be a solution in the normal branch. We then illustrate how Schwarzschild-de Sitter solutions can become compatible with the normal branch when using different coordinates. We also confirm that the self-accelerating branch of MTBG admits…
Kerr black hole immersed in test, asymptotically homogeneous magnetic field, aligned along the symmetry axis, is described by Wald's solution. We show how the static case of this solution may be generalized for nonlinear electromagnetic models via perturbative approach. Using this technique we find the lowest order correction to Wald's solution on Schwarzschild spacetime in Euler--Heisenberg and Born--Infeld theories. Finally, we discuss the problem of highly conducting star in asymptotically homogeneous magnetic field.
It is shown that if an asymptotically flat spacetime is asymptotically stationary, in the sense that $\Lie_ξ g_{ab}$ vanishes at the rate $\sim t^{-3}$ for asymptotically timelike vector field $ξ^a$, and the energy-momentum tensor vanishes at the rate $\sim t^{-4}$, then the spacetime is an asymptotically Schwarzschild spacetime. This gives a new aspect of the uniqueness theorem of a black hole.
We show that the dilaton Melvin-Schwarzschild black hole is the only asymptotically dilaton Melvin static axisymmetric solution of Einstein-Maxwell dilaton equations of motion.
We provide a Finslerian extension of the Schwarzschild metric based on heuristic arguments. The proposed metric asymptotically approaches not the Minkowski space-time but the Bogoslovsky locally anisotropic space-time which arises naturally as a deformation of very special relativity.
The metric outside an isolated object made up of ordinary matter is bound to be the classical Schwarzschild vacuum solution of General Relativity. Nevertheless, some solutions are known (e.g. Morris-Thorne wormholes) that do not match Schwarzschild asymptotically. On a phenomenological point of view, gravitational lensing in metrics falling as $1/r^q$ has recently attracted great interest. In this work, we explore the conditions on the source matter for constructing static spherically symmetric metrics exhibiting an arbitrary power-law as Newtonian limit. For such space-times we also derive th…
Recently it has been shown that despite previous claims the cosmological constant affects light bending. In the present article we study light bending and the advance of Mercury's perihelion in the context of the Newtonian limit of Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime employing the special relativistic equivalence of mass and energy. In both cases, up to a constant factor, we find the same results as in the full general relativistic treatment of the same phenomena. These approximate and intuitive arguments demonstrate clearly what effects should have been expected from the presence of $Λ$ in the …
We present first results obtained with a 3+1 dimensional adaptive mesh code in numerical general relativity. The adaptive mesh is used in conjunction with a standard ADM code for the evolution of a dynamically sliced Schwarzschild spacetime (geodesic slicing). We argue that adaptive mesh is particularly natural in the context of general relativity, where apart from adaptive mesh refinement for numerical efficiency one may want to use the built in flexibility to do numerical relativity on coordinate patches.
The holographic entanglement entropies (HEE) associated with four dimensional Schwarzschild and Reisner-Nordström black holes in asymptotically Minkowski spacetimes are investigated. Unlike the cases of asymptotically AdS spacetimes for which the boundaries are always taken at (timelike) conformal infinities, we take the boundaries at either large but finite radial coordinate (far boundary) or very close to the black hole event horizons (near horizon boundary). The reason for such choices is that such boundaries are similar to the conformal infinity of AdS spacetime in that they are all timeli…
We investigate a recent proposal for defining a conserved mass in asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes that is based on a conjectured holographic duality between such spacetimes and Euclidean conformal field theory. We show that an algorithm for deriving such terms in asymptotically anti de Sitter spacetimes has an asymptotically de Sitter counterpart, and derive the explicit form for such terms up to 9 dimensions. We show that divergences of the on-shell action for de Sitter spacetime are removed in any dimension in inflationary coordinates, but in covering coordinates a linear divergence rema…
We demonstrate how various geometries can emerge from Yang-Mills type matrix models with branes, and consider the examples of Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstroem geometry. We provide an explicit embedding of these branes in R^{2,5} and R^{4,6}, as well as an appropriate Poisson resp. symplectic structure which determines the non-commutativity of space-time. The embedding is asymptotically flat with asymptotically constant θ^{μν} for large r, and therefore suitable for a generalization to many-body configurations. This is an illustration of our previous work arXiv:1003.4132, where we have sho…
We show that mass parameter and radial coordinate values can be indirectly measured in thought experiments performed in Schwarzschild spacetime, without using the Newtonian limit of general relativity or approximations based on Euclidean geometry. Our approach involves different proper time quantifcations as well as solutions to systems of algebraic equations, and aims to strengthen the conceptual independence of general relativity from Newtonian gravity.
The case of asymptotic Minkowskian space-times is considered. A special class of asymptotic rectilinear coordinates at the spatial infinity, related to a specific system of free falling observers, is chosen. This choice is applied in particular to the Schwarzschild metric, obtaining a vanishing energy for this space-time. This result is compared with the result of some known theorems on the uniqueness of the energy of any asymptotic Minkowskian space, showing that there is no contradiction between both results, the differences becoming from the use of coordinates with different operational mea…
We prove the existence of asymptotically hyperbolic solutions to the vacuum Einstein constraint equations with a marginally outer trapped boundary of positive mean curvature, using the constant mean curvature conformal method. As an application of this result, we verify the Penrose inequality for certain perturbations of Schwarzschild Anti-de Sitter black hole initial data.
An interpretation of general relativity is developed in which the energy used to lift a body in a static gravitational field increases its rest mass. Observers at different gravitational potentials would experience different mass reference frames. It is shown that bodies falling in a Schwarzschild field exhibit the relativistic mass/energy relationship from special relativity. This new result is independent of the choice of coordinates. The proposed approach provides a physical explanation for gravitational energy, which is localized as a scalar function intrinsic to general relativity. Applyi…
The two-body problem in general relativity is reduced to the problem of an effective particle (with an energy-dependent relativistic reduced mass) in an external field. The effective potential is evaluated from the Born diagram of the linearized quantum theory of gravity. It reduces to a Schwarzschild-like potential with two different `Schwarzschild radii'. The results derived in a weak field approximation are expected to be relevant for relativistic velocities.
It is well known that the Schwarzschild solution describes the gravitational field outside compact spherically symmetric mass distribution in General Relativity. In particular, it describes the gravitational field outside a point particle. Nevertheless, what is the exact solution of Einstein's equations with $δ$-type source corresponding to a point particle is not known. In the present paper, we prove that the Schwarzschild solution in isotropic coordinates is the asymptotically flat static spherically symmetric solution of Einstein's equations with $δ$-type energy-momentum tensor correspondin…
In this Note we show that Einstein's equations for gravity are generically invariant under 'disformations'. We also show that the particular subclass when this is not true yields the equations of motion of 'Mimetic Gravity'. Finally we give the 'mimetic' generalization of the Schwarzschild solution.
We study classical solutions in the Weyl-transverse (WTDiff) gravity. The WTDiff gravity is invariant under both the local Weyl (conformal) transformation and the volume preserving diffeormorphisms (transverse diffeomorphisms) and is known to be equivalent to general relativity at least at the classical level. In particular, we find that in a general space-time dimension, the Schwarzschild metric is a classical solution in the WTDiff gravity when it is expressed in the Cartesian coordinate system.
We provide a simple derivation of the Schwarzschild solution in General Relativity, generalizing an early approach by Weyl, to include Birkhoff's theorem: constancy of the mass; its deeper, Hamiltonian, basis is also given. Our procedure is illustrated by a parallel derivation of the Coulomb field and constancy of electric charge, in electrodynamics.
We obtain static, spherically symmetric, and asymptotically flat numerical solutions of massive gravity with a source. Those solutions show, for the first time explicitly, a recovery of the Schwarzschild solution of General Relativity via the so-called Vainshtein mechanism.
It was confirmed that the negative modes of the Euclidean section for asymptotically flat black holes reveal the thermodynamic instability of these black holes in the grand canonical ensemble (GCE). These include Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordström, Kerr, and Kerr-Newman black holes. In this work, we develop the relation between thermodynamic instability in the GCE and tachyonic instability for asymptotically flat black holes, where the latter is the onset for obtaining black holes with scalar hair. This implies that the tachyonic instability of black holes when introducing scalar coupling to th…
The pseudo-complex General Relativity (pc-GR) is further considered. A new projection method is proposed. It is shown, that the pc-GR introduces automatically terms into the system which can be interpreted as dark energy. The modified pseudo-complex Schwarzschild solution is investigated. The dark energy part is treated as a liquid and possible solutions are discussed. As a consequence, the collapse of a large stellar mass into a singularity at $r=0$ is avoided and no event-horizon is formed. Thus, black holes don't exist. The resulting object can be viewed as a gray star. It contains no singu…
As is well known, the 0 - 0 component of the Schwarzschild space can be obtained by the requirement that the geodesic of slowly moving particles match the Newtonian equation. Given this result, we show here that the remaining components can be obtained by requiring that the inside of a Newtonian ball of dust matched at a free falling radius with the external space determines that space to be Schwarzschild, if no pathologies exist. Also we are able to determine that the constant of integration that appears in the Newtonian Cosmology, coincides with the spatial curvature of the FLRW metric. Thes…
A first order symmetric hyperbolic tetrad formulation of the Einstein equations developed by Estabrook and Wahlquist and put into a form suitable for numerical relativity by Buchman and Bardeen (the WEBB formulation) is adapted to explicit spherical symmetry and tested for accuracy and stability in the evolution of spherically symmetric black holes (the Schwarzschild geometry). The lapse and shift which specify the evolution of the coordinates relative to the tetrad congruence are reset at frequent time intervals to keep the constant-time hypersurfaces nearly orthogonal to the tetrad congruenc…
A deformed Schwarzschild solution in noncommutative gauge theory of gravitation is obtained. The gauge potentials (tetrad fields) are determined up to the second order in the noncommutativity parameters $Θ^{μν}$. A deformed real metric is defined and its components are obtained. The noncommutativity correction to the red shift test of General Relativity is calculated and it is concluded that the correction is too small to have observable effects. Implications of such a deformed Schwarzschild metric are also mentioned.
We investigate the impact of quantum gravity on accretion onto a modified Schwarzschild black hole within the context of the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP). The minimal measurable length connected to GUP modifies the Schwarzschild black hole, giving it the capacity to accommodate the correction due to quantum gravity. We look at potential critical point locations and calculate the critical speed of the matter accreting. We determine the temperature and total integrated flux correction at the event horizon for the polytropic matter using the least measurable length conjecture offered b…
We consider the scattering of gravitational waves off a Schwarzschild black hole in $f(R)$ gravity. We show that the reflection and transmission coefficients for tensor waves are the same as in General Relativity. While the scalar waves, which are not present in General Relativity, demonstrate interesting features. The equation that governs these scalar waves can be reduced to a Volterra integral equation. Analysis of this equation shows that a larger fraction of these waves are reflected compared to what one obtains for tensors. This may provide a novel observational signature for fourth orde…
A gravitational theory is formulated by considering the physical processes underlying relativistic dilation of time and contraction of space. It is shown that the point mass solution of general relativity's field equation - the Schwarzschild metric - is a weak-field approximation to the more general Lagrangian resulting here. Unlike general relativity the resulting theory does not exhibit a singularity at the Schwarzschild radius and furthermore shows that photons escape from that radius with a red shift of e^0.5 - 1. Consequently black holes are not black. Experimental confirmations of genera…
Quantum gravity corrections to accretion onto a Schwarzschild black hole are considered in the context of asymptotically safe scenario. The possible positions of the critical points are discussed and the general conditions for critical points are obtained. The explicit expressions for matter density compression and temperature profile both below the critical radius and at the event horizon are derived. For polytropic matter, we determine the corrected temperature and the integrated flux resulting from quantum gravity effects at the event horizon, which might be as a test of asymptotically safe…
In this work, we study the quasinormal modes of Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild (Anti-) de Sitter black holes by a matrix method. The proposed method involves discretizing the master field equation and expressing it in form of a homogeneous system of linear algebraic equations. The resulting homogeneous matrix equation furnishes a non-standard eigenvalue problem, which can then be solved numerically to obtain the quasinormal frequencies. A key feature of the present approach is that the discretization of the wave function and its derivatives are made to be independent of any specific metric th…
We present here the linear regime of the Einstein's field equations in the characteristic formulation. Through a simple decomposition of the metric variables in spin-weighted spherical harmonics, the field equations are expressed as a system of coupled ordinary differential equations. The process for decoupling them leads to a simple equation for $J$ - one of the Bondi-Sachs metric variables - known in the literature as the master equation. Then, this last equation is solved in terms of Bessel's functions of the first kind for the Minkowski's background, and in terms of the Heun's function in …
We study asymptotically flat black holes with massive graviton hair within the ghost-free bigravity theory. There have been contradictory statements in the literature about their existence -- such solutions were reported some time ago, but later a different group claimed the Schwarzschild solution to be the only asymptotically flat black hole in the theory. As a result, the controversy emerged. We have analyzed the issue ourselves and have been able to construct such solutions within a carefully designed numerical scheme. We find that for given parameter values there can be one or two asymptot…

Spherically symmetric solutions in Brans-Dicke theory of relativity with zero coupling constant, $ω=0$, are derived in the Schwarzschild line-element. The solutions are obtained from a cubic transition equation with one small parameter. The exterior space-time of one family of solutions is arbitrarily close to the exterior Schwarzschild space-time. These nontopological solitons have some similarity with soliton stars, and are proposed as candidates for {\em approximate black holes} for the use in numerical relativity, in particular for treatment of horizon boundary conditions.
We present an implementation of a ray tracing code in the Schwarzschild metric. We aim at building a numerical code with a correct implementation of both special (aberration, amplification, Doppler) and general (deflection of light, lensing, gravitational redshift) relativistic effects so as to simulate what an observer with arbitrary velocity would see near, or possibly within, the black hole. We also pay some specific attention to perform a satisfactory rendering of stars. Using this code, we then show several unexplored features of the maximal analytical extension of the metric. In particul…
In a previous work, it was shown that all Ricci-flat spacetimes are exact solutions for a large class of non-local gravitational theories. Here we prove that, for a subclass of non-local theories, the Schwarzschild singularity is stable under linear perturbations. Thus, non-locality may be not enough to cure all the singularities of general relativity. Finally, we show that the Schwarzschild solution can be generated by the gravitational collapse of a thin shell of radiation.
We have investigated the black hole thermodynamics and the phase transition for renormalized group improved asymptotically safe Schwarzschild black hole. This geometry takes into account the quantum gravitational correction in the running gravitational constant identifying $G(r) \equiv G(k=k(r))$. We studied various thermodynamic quantity like the Hawking temperature, specific heat and entropy for the general parameter $γ$ for quantum corrected Schwarzschild metric. We have noticed that the coefficient of the leading quantum correction, that is, the logarithmic correction gets affected by the …
Recently some 4d asymptotically $AdS_2 \times S^2$ regular bubbling solutions written in terms of an arbitrary profile function has appeared in literature. We discuss the possibility of extending these solutions to asymptotically flat spaces, therefore building a model for an horizonless and singularity-free fuzzball with the same asymptotic charges of the associated black hole, directly in general relativity. A negative conclusion is reached within an axial-symmetric ansatz inside the IWP family.
We solve the Einstein equations in the Randall-Sundrum framework with a static, spherically symmetric matter distribution on the {\it physical brane} and obtain an approximate expression for the gravitational field outside the source to second order in the gravitational coupling. This expression when confined on the {\it physical brane} coincides with the standard form of the Schwarzschild metric. Therefore, the Randall-Sundrum scenario is consistent with the Mercury precession test of General Relativity.
In this paper, new electrically charged asymptotically flat black hole solutions are numerically derived in the context of higher derivative gravity. These solutions can be interpreted as generalizations of two different classes of non-charged asymptotically flat spacetimes: Schwarzschild and non-Schwarzschild solutions. Extreme black hole solutions and black holes with negative mass were found.
A promising way to introduce general relativity in the classroom is to study the physical implications of certain given metrics, such as the Schwarzschild one. This involves lower mathematical expenditure than an approach focusing on differential geometry in its full glory and permits to emphasize physical aspects before attacking the field equations. Even so, in terms of motivation, lacking justification of the metric employed may pose an obstacle. The paper discusses how to establish the weak-field limit of the Schwarzschild metric with a minimum of relatively simple physical assumptions, av…
We consider the deformation of the Schwarzschild solution in general relativity due to spherically symmetric quantum fluctuations of the metric and the matter fields. In this case, the 4D theory of gravity with Einstein action reduces to the effective two-dimensional dilaton gravity. We have found that the Schwarzschild singularity at $r=0$ is shifted to the finite radius $r_{min} \sim r_{Pl}$, where the scalar curvature is finite, so that the space-time looks regular and consists of two asymptotically flat sheets glued at the hypersurface of constant radius.
Trumpet geometries play an important role in numerical simulations of black hole spacetimes, which are usually performed under the assumption of asymptotic flatness. Our Universe is not asymptotically flat, however, which has motivated numerical studies of black holes in asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes. We derive analytical expressions for trumpet geometries in Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes by first generalizing the static maximal trumpet slicing of the Schwarzschild spacetime to static constant mean curvature trumpet slicings of Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes. We then switch to a…
We consider a Hamiltonian theory of spherically symmetric vacuum Einstein gravity under Kruskal-like boundary conditions in variables associated with the Einstein-Rosen wormhole throat. The configuration variable in the reduced classical theory is the radius of the throat, in a foliation that is frozen at the left hand side infinity but asymptotically Minkowski at the right hand side infinity, and such that the proper time at the throat agrees with the right hand side Minkowski time. The classical Hamiltonian is numerically equal to the Schwarzschild mass. Within a class of Hamiltonian quantiz…
