We define a Frobenius algebra over fusion categories of the form Rep$(G)\boxtimes$Rep$(G)$ which generalizes the diagonal subgroup of $G\times G$. This allows us to extend field theoretical constructions which depend on the existence of a diagonal subgroup to non-invertible symmetries. We give explicit calculations for theories with Rep$(S_3)\boxtimes$Rep$(S_3)$ symmetry, applying the results to gauging topological quantum field theories which carry this non-invertible symmetry. Along the way, we also discuss how Morita equivalence is implemented for algebras in symmetry categories.
We sketch a procedure to capture general non-invertible symmetries of a d-dimensional quantum field theory in the data of a higher-category, which captures the local properties of topological defects associated to the symmetries. We also discuss fusions of topological defects, which involve condensations/gaugings of higher-categorical symmetries localized on the worldvolumes of topological defects. Recently some fusions of topological defects were discussed in the literature where the dimension of topological defects seems to jump under fusion. This is not possible in the standard description …
In this work, we use Ising chain and Kitaev chain to check the validity of an earlier proposal in arXiv:2011.02859 that enriched fusion (higher) categories provide a unified categorical description of all gapped/gapless quantum liquid phases, including symmetry-breaking phases, topological orders, SPT/SET orders and certain gapless quantum phases. In particular, we show explicitly that, in each gapped phase realized by these two models, the spacetime observables form a fusion category enriched in a braided fusion category. We also study the categorical descriptions of the boundaries of these m…
We establish tetrahedral symmetries of 6j-symbols for arbitrary fusion categories under minimal assumptions. As a convenient tool for our calculations we introduce the notion of a veined fusion category, which is generated by a finite set of simple objects but is larger than its skeleton. Every fusion category C contains veined fusion subcategories that are monoidally equivalent to C and which suffice to compute many categorical properties for C. The notion of a veined fusion category does not assume the presence of a pivotal structure, and thus in particular does not assume unitarity. We also…
We consider a higher gauge topological model in three spatial dimensions whose input datum is a 2-group encoding the mixing of a 0-form $\mathbb Z_2$- and 1-form $\mathbb Z_3$-symmetry. We study the excitation content of the theory on the symmetry-preserving boundary. We show that boundary operators are organised into the fusion 2-category of 2-representations of the 2-group. These can be interpreted as categorical charges for an effective boundary model that inherits a global 2-group symmetry from the bulk topological order. Interestingly, we find that certain simple 2-representations are phy…
Category theoretic aspects of non-rational conformal field theories are discussed. We consider the case that the category C of chiral sectors is a finite tensor category, i.e. a rigid monoidal category whose class of objects has certain finiteness properties. Besides the simple objects, the indecomposable projective objects of C are of particular interest. The fusion rules of C can be block-diagonalized. A conjectural connection between the block-diagonalization and modular transformations of characters of modules over vertex algebras is exemplified with the case of the (1,p) minimal models.

We study a one-dimensional lattice model of interacting spinless fermions. This model is integrable for both periodic and open boundary conditions, the latter case includes the presence of Grassmann valued non-diagonal boundary fields breaking the bulk U(1) symmetry of the model. Starting from the embedding of this model into a graded Yang-Baxter algebra an infinite hierarchy of comuting transfer matrices is constructed by means of a fusion procedure. For certain values of the coupling constant related to anisotropies of the underlying vertex model taken at roots of unity this hierarchy is sho…
The fusion products of admissible representations of the su(2) WZW model at the fractional level k=-4/3 are analysed. It is found that some fusion products define representations for which the spectrum of L_0 is not bounded from below. Furthermore, the fusion products generate representations that are not completely reducible and for which the action of L_0 is not diagonalisable. The complete set of representations that is closed under fusion is identified, and the corresponding fusion rules are derived.
We study affine fusion with the adjoint representation. For simple Lie algebras, elementary and universal formulas determine the decomposition of a tensor product of an integrable highest-weight representation with the adjoint representation. Using the (refined) affine depth rule, we prove that equally striking results apply to adjoint affine fusion. For diagonal fusion, a coefficient equals the number of nonzero Dynkin labels of the relevant affine highest weight, minus 1. A nice lattice-polytope interpretation follows, and allows the straightforward calculation of the genus-1 1-point adjoint…
Several aspects of fusion rings and fusion rule algebras, and of their manifestations in twodimensional (conformal) field theory, are described: diagonalization and the connection with modular invariance; the presentation in terms of quotients of polynomial rings; fusion graphs; various strategies that allow for a partial classification; and the role of the fusion rules in the conformal bootstrap programme.
We establish an algebra-isomorphism between the complexified Grothendieck ring F of certain bimodule categories over a modular tensor category and the endomorphism algebra of appropriate morphism spaces of those bimodule categories. This provides a purely categorical proof of a conjecture by Ostrik concerning the structure of F. As a by-product we obtain a concrete expression for the structure constants of the Grothendieck ring of the bimodule category in terms of endomorphisms of the tensor unit of the underlying modular tensor category.
We reconsider the earlier found solutions of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov (KZ) equations describing correlators based on the admissible representations of $A_1^{(1)}$. Exploiting a symmetry of the KZ equations we show that the original infinite sums representing the 4-point chiral correlators can be effectively summed up. Using these simplified expressions with proper choices of the contours we determine the duality (braid and fusion) transformations and show that they are consistent with the fusion rules of Awata and Yamada. The requirement of locality leads to a 1-parameter family of monodromy…
We consider the W-extended logarithmic minimal model WLM(p,p'). As in the rational minimal models, the so-called fundamental fusion algebra of WLM(p,p') is described by a simple graph fusion algebra. The fusion matrices in the regular representation thereof are mutually commuting, but in general not diagonalizable. Nevertheless, we show that they can be brought simultaneously to block-diagonal forms whose blocks are upper-triangular matrices of dimension 1, 3, 5 or 9. The directed graphs associated with the two fundamental modules are described in detail. The corresponding adjacency matrices s…
We study the operadic and categorical formulations of (conformal) full field algebras. In particular, we show that a grading-restricted $\R\times \R$-graded full field algebra is equivalent to an algebra over a partial operad constructed from spheres with punctures and local coordinates. This result is generalized to conformal full field algebras over $V^L\otimes V^R$, where V^L and V^R are two vertex operator algebras satisfying certain finiteness and reductivity conditions. We also study the geometry interpretation of conformal full field algebras over $V^L\otimes V^R$ equipped with a nondeg…
Open descendants extend Conformal Field Theory to unoriented surfaces with boundaries. The construction rests on two types of generalizations of the fusion algebra. The first is needed even in the relatively simple case of diagonal models. It leads to a new tensor that satisfies the fusion algebra, but whose entries are signed integers. The second is needed when dealing with non-diagonal models, where Cardy's ansatz does not apply. It leads to a new tensor with positive integer entries, that satisfies a set of polynomial equations and encodes the classification of the allowed boundary operator…
We study the exact solutions of quantum integrable model associated with the $C_n$ Lie algebra, with either a periodic or an open one with off-diagonal boundary reflections, by generalizing the nested off-diagonal Bethe ansatz method. Taking the $C_3$ as an example we demonstrate how the generalized method works. We give the fusion structures of the model and provide a way to close fusion processes. Based on the resulted operator product identities among fused transfer matrices and some necessary additional constraints such as asymptotic behaviors and relations at some special points, we obtai…
Prior work [arXiv:2106.16248] shows that the Standard Model (SM) naturally arises near a gapless quantum critical region between Georgi-Glashow (GG) $su(5)$ and Pati-Salam (PS) $su(4) \times su(2) \times su(2)$ models of quantum vacua (in a phase diagram or moduli space), by implementing a modified $so(10)$ Grand Unification (GUT) with a Spin(10) gauge group plus a new discrete Wess-Zumino Witten term matching a 4d nonperturbative global mixed gauge-gravity $w_2 w_3$ anomaly. In this work, we include Barr's flipped $su(5)$ model into the quantum landscape, showing these four GUT-like models ar…
