Quantum computers are believed to bring computational advantages in simulating quantum many body systems. However, recent works have shown that classical machine learning algorithms are able to predict numerous properties of quantum systems with classical data. Despite various examples of learning tasks with provable quantum advantages being proposed, they all involve cryptographic functions and do not represent any physical scenarios encountered in laboratory settings. In this paper we prove quantum advantages for the physically relevant task of learning quantum observables from classical (measured out) data. We consider two types of observables: first we prove a learning advantage for linear combinations of Pauli strings, then we extend the result for a broader case of unitarily parametrized observables. For each type of observable we delineate the boundaries that separate physically relevant tasks which classical computers can solve using data from quantum measurements, from those where a quantum computer is still necessary for data analysis. Differently from previous works, we base our classical hardness results on the weaker assumption that $\mathsf{BQP}$ hard processes cannot be simulated by polynomial-size classical circuits and provide a non-trivial quantum learning algorithm. Our results shed light on the utility of quantum computers for machine learning problems in the domain of quantum many body physics, thereby suggesting new directions where quantum learning improvements may emerge.
In communication complexity, a number of distant parties have the task of calculating a distributed function of their inputs, while minimizing the amount of communication between them. It is known that with quantum resources, such as entanglement and quantum channels, one can obtain significant reductions in the communication complexity of some tasks. In this work, we study the role of the quantum superposition of the direction of communication as a resource for communication complexity. We present a tripartite communication task for which such a superposition allows for an exponential saving …

According to the eigenstate thermalization ansatz, matrices representing generic few body observables take on a specific form when displayed in the eigenbasis of a chaotic Hamiltonian. We examine the effect of environmental induced decoherence on the dynamics of observables that conform with said eigenstate thermalization ansatz. The obtained result refers to a description of the dynamics in terms of an integro-differential equation of motion of the Nakajima-Zwanzig form. We find that environmental decoherence is equivalent to an exponential damping of the respective memory kernel. This statem…
Generalised observables (POM observables) are necessary for representing all possible measurements on a quantum system. Useful algebraic operations such as addition and multiplication are defined for these observables, recovering many advantages of the more restrictive Hermitian operator formalism. Examples include new uncertainty relations and metrics, and optical phase applications.
This work analyses the performance of quantum circuits and general processes to transform $k$ uses of an arbitrary unitary operation $U$ into another unitary operation $f(U)$. When the desired function $f$ a homomorphism, i.e., $f(UV)=f(U)f(V)$, it is known that optimal average fidelity is attainable by parallel circuits and indefinite causality does not provide any advantage. Here we show that the situation changes dramatically when considering anti-homomorphisms, i.e., $f(UV)=f(V)f(U)$. In particular, we prove that when $f$ is an anti-homomorphism, sequential circuits could exponentially out…

Despite the conceptual importance of contextuality in quantum mechanics, there is a hitherto limited number of applications requiring contextuality but not entanglement. Here, we show that for any quantum state and observables of sufficiently small dimensions producing contextuality, there exists a communication task with quantum advantage. Conversely, any quantum advantage in this task admits a proof of contextuality whenever an additional condition holds. We further show that given any set of observables allowing for quantum state-independent contextuality, there exists a class of communicat…
We consider relations between communication complexity problems and detecting correlations (violating local realism) with no local hidden variable model. We show first universal equivalence between characteristics of protocols used in that type of problems and non-signaling correlations. We construct non linear bipartite Bell type inequalities and strong nonlocality test with binary observables by providing general method of Bell inequalities construction and showing that existence of gap between quantum and classical complexity leads to violation of these inequalities. We obtain, first to our…
Finding exponential separation between quantum and classical information tasks is like striking gold in quantum information research. Such an advantage is believed to hold for quantum computing but is proven for quantum communication complexity. Recently, a novel quantum resource called the quantum switch---which creates a coherent superposition of the causal order of events, known as quantum causality---has been harnessed theoretically in a new protocol providing provable exponential separation. We experimentally demonstrate such an advantage by realizing a superposition of communication dire…

Estimating the expected value of an observable appearing in a non-equilibrium stochastic process usually involves sampling. If the observable's variance is high, many samples are required. In contrast, we show that performing the same task without sampling, using tensor network compression, efficiently captures high variances in systems of various geometries and dimensions. We provide examples for which matching the accuracy of our efficient method would require a sample size scaling exponentially with system size. In particular, the high variance observable $\mathrm{e}^{-βW}$, motivated by Ja…
Detailed assessment of calculating drag force with quantum computers: Explicit time-evolution precludes exponential advantage for nonlinear differential equations
The viability of non-stoquastic catalyst Hamiltonians to deliver consistent quantum speedups in quantum adiabatic optimization remains an open question. The infinite-range ferromagnetic $p$-spin model is a rare example exhibiting an exponential advantage for non-stoquastic catalysts over its stoquastic counterpart. We revisit this model and note how the incremental changes in the ground state wavefunction give an indication of how the non-stoquastic catalyst provides an advantage. We then construct two new examples that exhibit an advantage for non-stoquastic catalysts over stoquastic catalyst…
We demonstrate the possibility of (sub)exponential quantum speedup via a quantum algorithm that follows an adiabatic path of a gapped Hamiltonian with no sign problem. This strengthens the superpolynomial separation recently proved by Hastings. The Hamiltonian that exhibits this speed-up comes from the adjacency matrix of an undirected graph, and we can view the adiabatic evolution as an efficient $\mathcal{O}(\mathrm{poly}(n))$-time quantum algorithm for finding a specific "EXIT" vertex in the graph given the "ENTRANCE" vertex. On the other hand we show that if the graph is given via an adjac…
We study how unique features of non-Hermitian lattice systems can be harnessed to improve Hamiltonian parameter estimation in a fully quantum setting. While the so-called non-Hermitian skin effect does not provide any distinct advantage, alternate effects yield dramatic enhancements. We show that certain asymmetric non-Hermitian tight-binding models with a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry yield a pronounced sensing advantage: the quantum Fisher information per photon increases exponentially with system size. We find that these advantages persist in regimes where non-Markovian and non-perturbative effec…
We consider time-dependent relaxation of observables in quantum systems of chaotic and regular type. We show that the spread of the wave function in the Hilbert space is determined by the survival probability which is known to have pre-exponential, exponential, and long-term power-law limiting behaviors. This result relies on complexity of the wave functions and thus is generic to many systems. In the chaotic limit modeled by the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble we show that the survival probability obtained analytically also fully defines the relaxation timescale of observables. This is not the c…
Distributed quantum computing can give substantial noise reduction due to shallower circuits. An experiment illustrates the advantages in the case of Grover search. This motivates studying the quantum advantage of the distributed version of the Simon and Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm. We show that the distributed Simon algorithm retains the exponential advantage, but the complexity deteriorates from O(n) to O(n^2), where n = log2(N). The distributed Deutsch-Jozsa deteriorates to being probabilistic but retains a quantum advantage over classical random sampling.
A fundamental aspect of the quantum-to-classical limit is the transition from a non-commutative algebra of observables to commutative one. However, this transition is not possible if we only consider unitary evolutions. One way to describe this transition is to consider the Gamow vectors, which introduce exponential decays in the evolution. In this paper, we give two mathematical models in which this transition happens in the infite time limit. In the first one, we consider operators acting on the space of the Gamow vectors, which represent quantum resonances. In the second one, we use an alge…
