In this paper we consider certain rigidly rotating closed string configurations in an asymptotically non-AdS string background. The string background is a deformation of $AdS_3 \times {\cal M}_7$. It interpolates between $AdS_3 $ and asymptotically linear dilaton ${\rm I\!R} \times S^1 \times {\rm I\!R}$ spacetime (times the internal compact manifold ${\cal M}_7$). We compute the quantity $E - J$ (in the large $J$ limit) where $E$ is the energy and $J$ is the angular momentum of the spinning strings. In the two dimensional CFT dual to string theory on $AdS_3$ (times ${\cal M}_7$) it gives the anomalous dimensions of certain twist two and higher operators. We show in the deformed background that $E - J$ is bounded. At a special value of the deformation coupling we also show that for spinning closed strings containing $n > 2$ cusps or spikes both $E$ and $J$ are bounded. In the CFT dual to string theory on $AdS_3$ (times ${\cal M}_7$) the spinning cusped strings describe operators with twist $n$ larger than two. In general, at other values of the deformation coupling, we demonstrate that this feature is exhibited only by those cusped strings with $n > n_0$ where $n_0$ is determined only by the deformation coupling. We also give simple exact Regge relations between $E$ and $J$. We also study the closely related cusp anomalous dimension of a light-like Wilson loop. We comment on what $E - J$ measures away from the CFT along the deformation in the coupling space. In the long string sector the deformation is dual to a single trace $T{\bar T}$ deformed orbifold theory. We determine the associated deformed sinh-Gordon model that classically describes the (long) strings near the boundary. This provides an example of single trace $T{\bar T}$ deformation in non-orbifold theories.
The principle of the holography of information states that in a theory of quantum gravity a copy of all the information available on a Cauchy slice is also available near the boundary of the Cauchy slice. This redundancy in the theory is already present at low energy. In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, this principle can be translated into a statement about the dual conformal field theory. We carry out this translation and demonstrate that the principle of the holography of information holds in bilocal holography.
We discuss AdS$_2$ quantum gravity from an unconventional perspective that emphasizes bulk geometry. In our approach, AdS$_2$ has no boundary, there are no divergences that require renormalization, and the dilaton of JT-gravity can be omitted altogether. The result is the standard Schwarzian theory. However, it may be advantageous that our derivation just relies on conventional AdS/CFT correspondence and effective quantum field theory. For example, it clarifies the symmetry breaking pattern. It also puts the non-compact AdS$_2$ topology on the same footing as compact Riemann surfaces.
In these lectures I review some recent progresses in counting the number of microstates of AdS supersymmetric black holes in dimensions equal or greater than four using holography. The counting is obtained by applying localization and matrix model techniques to the dual field theory. I cover in details the case of dyonic AdS$_4$ black holes, corresponding to a twisted compactification of the dual field theory, and I discuss the state of the art for rotating AdS$_5$ black holes.
We present in detail the basic ingredients contained in bi-local holography, representing a constructive scheme for reconstructing AdS bulk theories in Vectorial/AdS duality. Explicit Mapping to bulk AdS and higher spin fields is seen to be given by a double Fourier transform. All order interactions are explicitly specified through the collective action. This generates bulk Feynman (Witten) diagrams (at tree and loop level). We give details of the four-point case evaluation. It is noted that the bi-local construction goes beyond the assumptions in various discussions of non-locality.
We study several aspects of holographic entanglement in two models known as flat$_3$/BMSFT and (W)AdS$_3$/WCFT. These are two examples of holography beyond AdS/CFT where the the boundary field theories are not Lorentz invariant but still feature an infinite set of local symmetries. In the first example, BMS-invariant field theories (BMSFTs) are conjectured to provide a holographic description of quantum gravity in asymptotically flat three-dimensional spacetimes; while in the second example, warped conformal field theories (WCFTs) are proposed to describe quantum gravity in warped AdS$_3$ or A…
We compute the spectrum of extremal nonBPS black holes in four dimensions by studying supergravity on their AdS$_2\times S^2$ near horizon geometry. We find that the spectrum exhibits significant simplifications even though supersymmetry is completely broken. We interpret our results in the framework of nAdS$_2$/nCFT$_1$ correspondence and by comparing with dimensional reduction from AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ duality. As an additional test we compute quantum corrections to extremal black hole entropy on the nonBPS branch and recover results previously determined using very different methods.
We build a novel time-like coset sigma-model describing type-II superstring theory in a charged rotating black-brane background that interpolates between a locally $AdS_3$ in the IR and a linear-dilaton geometry in the UV. This allows one to perform a systematic study of holography in non-AdS backgrounds which are smoothly connected to $AdS_3$. We construct massless closed string states vertex operators in the NS-NS sector, calculate the corresponding two-point correlation functions, and discuss holographic interpretation of our results from 4+1 dimensional boundary field theory point of view.…
We continue to explore the dynamics of a heavy quark in a strongly coupled rotating quark-gluon plasma within the holographic framework. We use the 5d Kerr-AdS black hole with two arbitrary rotating parameters to describe the rotating quark-gluon plasma. We present the relations for the drag force acting on the heavy quark both in the rotating- and static-at-infinity frames for arbitrary choice of the rotational parameters. We also calculate the thermal mass of a static quark in different frames and show that at high-$T$ limit the dependence on rotation is suppressed.
We propose a class of ${\rm AdS}_3/{\rm CFT}_2$ dualities with $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetry. These dualities relate string theory on ${\rm AdS}_3 \times ({\rm S}^3\times \mathbb{T}^4)/{\rm G}$ to marginal deformations of the symmetric product orbifold of $\mathbb{T}^4/{\rm G}$, where ${\rm G}$ is a dihedral group. We demonstrate that the BPS spectrum calculated from supergravity and string theory agrees with that of the dual CFT. Moreover, the supergravity elliptic genus is shown to reproduce the CFT answer, thus providing further non-trivial evidence in favour of the proposal.
We discuss some aspects related to holography of Anti-de Sitter (AdS) dyonic hairy black holes, which break the conformal symetry of the boundary. We use counterterms for the scalar field that satisfies mixed boundary conditions to compute the Euclidean action and dual stress tensor. We apply these results to show that the Cardy-Verlinde formula is not satisfied. However, when the magnetic (or electric) charge vanishes, the conformal symmetry is preserved and the entropy of the black hole can be put in the Cardy-Verlinde form. In our analysis, there is no need of adding extra finite counterter…
An action for the higher-derivative corrections to minimal gauged supergravity in four dimensions has been recently proposed. We demonstrate that the supersymmetric solutions of this model are those of the two-derivative action, and investigate some of their properties. In particular, we prove a formula for the renormalised on-shell action in terms of contributions from fixed points of a $U(1)$ action, and confirm that it is invariant under deformations which preserve the boundary almost contact structure.
By using the approach introduced in arXiv:2107.09677 we construct non-BPS solutions of 6D $(1,0)$ supergravity coupled to two tensor multiplets as a perturbation of AdS$_3\times S^3$. These solutions are both regular and asymptotically AdS$_3\times S^3$, so according to the standard holographic framework they must have a dual CFT interpretation as non-supersymmetric heavy operators of the D1-D5 CFT. We provide quantitative evidence that such heavy CFT operators are bound states of a large number of light BPS operators that are mutually non-BPS.
We study four-derivative corrections to four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ minimal gauged supergravity and show that they are controlled by two real constants. The solutions of the equations of motion in the two-derivative theory are not modified by the higher-derivative corrections. We use this to derive a general formula for the regularized on-shell action for any asymptotically locally AdS$_4$ solution of the theory and show how the higher-derivative corrections affect black hole thermodynamic quantities in a universal way. We employ our results in the context of holography to derive explicit…
In the background of a charged AdS dilaton black hole, we investigate the movement of a self-graviting 3-brane and relevant holographic effects as the brane move close to the AdS boundary. The induced metric on brane corresponds to an exact FLRW geometry, while the evolution of brane is determined by Israel junction condition and the effective Einstein field equation on brane together. When the brane approaches the AdS boundary, AdS/CFT correspondence implies that a radiation dominated FLRW-universe ($P=\frac{1}{3}ρ$) should be given. According to the holographic renormalization procedure, we …
In light of recent developments in nearly AdS$_2$ holography, we revisit the semi-classical version of two-dimensional dilaton gravity proposed by Callan, Giddings, Harvey, and Strominger (CGHS) in the early 90's. In distinction to the classical model, the quantum corrected CGHS model has an AdS$_2$ vacuum with a constant dilaton. By turning on a non-normalizable mode of the Liouville field, i.e. the conformal mode of the $2d$ gravity, the explicit breaking of the scale invariance renders the AdS$_2$ vacuum nearly AdS$_2$. As a consequence, there emerges an effective one-dimensional Schwarzian…
We continue our study of string theory in a background that interpolates between $AdS_3$ in the infrared and a linear dilaton spacetime $R^{1,1}\times R_ϕ$ in the UV. This background corresponds via holography to a $CFT_2$ deformed by a certain irrelevant operator of dimension $(2,2)$. We show that for two point functions of local operators in the infrared CFT, conformal perturbation theory in this irrelevant operator has a finite radius of convergence in momentum space, and one can use it to flow up the renormalization group. The spectral density develops an imaginary part above a certain cri…
A large AdS Schwarzschild black hole can be approximated by an AdS planar black hole. However, the temperature of a planar black hole is not well defined due to the translational invariance of the horizon. We propose to fix this arbitrariness by imposing the entropy area law. Furthermore, using the AdS/CFT holography, we propose a relationship between the temperatures of an AdS planar and large AdS Schwarzschild black holes.
We analyse the conditions for $\mathrm{AdS}_3 \times \mathcal{M}_7$ backgrounds with pure NS-NS flux to be supersymmetric. We find that a necessary condition is that $\mathcal{M}_7$ is a $\mathrm{U}(1)$-fibration over a balanced manifold. We subsequently classify all $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ solutions where $\mathcal{M}_7$ satisfies the stronger condition of being a $\mathrm{U}(1)$-fibration over a Kahler manifold. We compute the BPS spectrum of all the backgrounds in this classification. We assign a natural dual CFT to the backgrounds and confirm that the BPS spectra agree, thus providing evidence…
AdS$_2$ plays an extremely important role in black-hole physics. We construct several infinite families of supergravity solutions that are asymptotically AdS$_2$ in the UV, and terminate in the IR with a cap that is singular in two dimensions but smooth in ten dimensions. These solutions break conformal invariance, and should correspond to supersymmetric ground states of a holographically dual CFT$_1$. We solve the free massless scalar wave equation on a family of these solutions, finding towers of finite-energy normalizable bound-state excitations. We discuss the intriguing possibility that t…

In this article we study large central charge partition function and entanglement entropy of $T\bar{T}$ deformed two dimensional conformal field theory, following the approach to $T\bar{T}$ deformation as integrated infinitesimal double trace deformation used by Guica et al.. For sphere partition function and entanglement entropy of half great circle with antipodal points being the entangling surface, we obtain different results compared to previous works, with more reasonable CFT limits and qualitatively different behaviour as the deformation parameter $μ$ goes to infinity, which contradicts …
We approach the problem of constructing an explicit holographic dictionary for the AdS$_2$/CFT$_1$ correspondence in the context of higher derivative gravitational actions in AdS$_2$ space-times. These actions are obtained by an $S^2$ reduction of four-dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ Wilsonian effective actions with Weyl squared interactions restricted to constant scalar backgrounds. BPS black hole near-horizon space-times fall into this class of backgrounds, and by identifying the boundary operators dual to the bulk fields, we explicitly show how the Wald entropy of the BPS black hole is holographic…
We consider string theory on AdS$_3$ $\times$ (S$^3$ $\times$ S$^3$ $\times$ S$^1)/\mathbb Z_2$, a background supporting $\mathcal N=(3,3)$ spacetime supersymmetry. We propose that string theory on this background is dual to the symmetric product orbifold of $\mathcal S_0/\mathbb Z_2$ where $\mathcal S_0$ is a theory of four free fermions and one free boson. We show that the BPS spectra of the two sides of the duality match precisely. Furthermore, we compute the elliptic genus of the dual CFT and that of the supergravity limit of string theory and demonstrate that they match, hence providing n…
