Continuous quantum phase transitions are widely assumed and frequently observed in various systems of quantum particles or spins. Their characteristic trait involves scaling laws governing a second-order, gradual suppression of the order parameter as the quantum critical point is approached. The localization of Cooper pairs in disordered superconductors and the resulting breakdown of superconductivity have long stood as a prototypical example. Here, we show a departure from this paradigm, showcasing that amorphous superconducting films of indium oxide undergo a distinctive, discontinuous first-order quantum phase transition tuned by disorder. Through systematic measurements of the plasmon spectrum in superconducting microwave resonators, we provide evidence for a marked jump of both the zero-temperature superfluid stiffness and the transition temperature at the critical disorder. This discontinuous transition sheds light on the previously overlooked role of repulsive interactions between Cooper pairs and the subsequent competition between superconductivity and insulating Cooper-pair glass. Furthermore, our investigation shows that the critical temperature of the films no longer relates to the pairing amplitude but aligns with the superfluid stiffness, consistent with the pseudogap regime of preformed Cooper pairs. Our findings raise fundamental new questions into the role of disorder in quantum phase transitions and carry implications for superinductances in quantum circuits.
Topological states of matter support quantized nondissipative responses and exotic quantum particles that cannot be accessed in common materials. The exceptional properties and application potential of topological materials have triggered a large-scale search for new realizations. Breaking away from the popular trend focusing almost exclusively on crystalline symmetries, we introduce the Shiba glass as a platform for amorphous topological quantum matter. This system consists of an ensemble of randomly distributed magnetic atoms on a superconducting surface. The collection of magnetic moments g…
We study the magnetic-field-induced breakdown of superconductivity in nm-scale metal grains having a mean electron level spacing $d \simeq \tildeΔ$ (bulk gap). Using a generalized variational BCS approach that yields good qualitative agreement with measured spectra, we argue that Pauli paramagnetism dominates orbital diamagnetism, as in the case of thin films in a parallel magnetic field. However, the first-order transition observed for the latter can be made continuous by finite size effects. The mean-field procedure of describing the system by a single pairing parameter $Δ$ breaks down for $…
We report the growth, characterization and superconducting properties of a new amorphous superconductor, RexZr ( x ~ 6 ), in thin film form. Films were grown by pulsed laser deposition with the substrate kept at room temperature. Films with thickness larger than 40 nm showed a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of 5.9 K. Superconducting properties were measured for films with varying thickness from 120 to 3 nm. The normal state resistance scales linearly with inverse of thickness. The transition temperature, critical field, coherence length, penetration depth and superconducting energ…
In order to understand the emergence of superconductivity it is useful to study and identify the various pathways leading to the destruction of superconductivity. One way is to use the increase in Coulomb-repulsion due to the increase in disorder, which overpowers the attractive interaction responsible for Cooper-pair formation. A second pathway, applicable to uniformly disordered materials, is the competition between superconductivity and Anderson localization, which leads to electronic granularity in which phase and amplitude fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter play a role. F…
We have studied the transport properties of LaTiO3/SrTiO3 (LTO/STO) heterostructures. In spite of 2D growth observed in reflection high energy electron diffraction, Transmission Electron Microscopy images revealed that the samples tend to amorphize. Still, we observe that the structures are conducting, and some of them exhibit high conductance and/or superconductivity. We established that conductivity arises mainly on the STO side of the interface, and shows all the signs of the 2-dimensional electron gas usually observed at interfaces between SrTiO3 and LaTiO3 or LaAlO3, including the presenc…
We present results on disordered amorphous films which are expected to undergo a field-tuned Superconductor-Insulator Transition. Based on low-field data and I-V characteristics, we find evidence of a low temperature Metal-to-Superconductor transition. This transition is characterized by hysteretic magnetoresistance and discontinuities in the I-V curves. The metallic phase just above the transition is different from the "Fermi Metal" before superconductivity sets in.
In superconductivity, electrons exhibit unique macroscopic collective quantum behavior that is the key for many modern quantum technologies. This electron behavior stems vastly from coupling to a correlated motion of atoms in the material, as well as from synchronized directional movement that screens external magnetic fields perfectly. Hence, the inter-atomic distance and material geometry are expected to affect fundamental superconductive characteristics. These parameters are tunable with strain, but strain application is hindered by the rigidity of superconductors, which in turn increases a…
We study the properties of two dimensional topological spin hall insulators which arise through spontaneous breakdown of spin symmetry in systems that are spin rotation invariant. Such a phase breaks spin rotation but not time reversal symmetry and has a vector order parameter. Skyrmion configurations in this vector order parameter are shown to have electric charge that is twice the electron charge. When the spin Hall order is destroyed by condensation of skyrmions superconductivity results. This may happen either through doping or at fixed filling by tuning interactions to close the skyrmion …
We report measurements on ultrathin (<10 nm) nanowires produced by coating carbon nanotubes with a superconducting amorphous MoGe alloy. We find that nanowires can be superconducting or insulating depending on their normal state resistance $R_{N}$ compared to $R_{q}=h/(2e)^{2}$ -- the quantum resistance for Cooper pairs. If $R_{N}< R_{q}$ the tunneling of quantum phase slips (QPS) is prohibited due to strong damping, and so the wires stay superconducting. The insulating state, observed if $R_{N}> R_{q}$, is explained in terms of proliferation of quantum phase slips and corresponding localizati…
The two-dimensional electron gas at the crystalline LaAlO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ (c-LAO/STO) interface has sparked large interest due to its exotic properties including an intriguing gate-tunable superconducting phase. While there is growing evidence of pronounced spatial inhomogeneity in the conductivity at STO-based interfaces, the consequences for superconductivity remain largely unknown. We study interfaces based on amorphous LAO top layers grown at room temperature (a-LAO/STO) and demonstrate a superconducting phase similar to c-LAO/STO, however, with a gate-tunable critical temperature of $46…
Without a periodic reference framework, local structures in noncrystalline solids are difficult to specify, but they still exert an enormous influence on materials properties. For example, thermomechanical responses of organic and inorganic glasses sensitively depend on the distribution of free volume or soft spots$^{1,2}$. Meanwhile, strong electron localization$^{3}$ that endows unparalleled electrical breakdown strengths to amorphous insulators is easily compromised by local defects that promote inelastic tunneling over a variable range$^{4,5}$. Here we report how metallic conduction can ov…
We observed quantum oscillations in thermoelectric and magnetic torque signals in non-centrosymmetric superconductor PbTaSe$_2$. One oscillatory frequency stems from the orbits formed by magnetic breakdown, while others are from two-dimensional-like Fermi surfaces near the topological nodal rings. Our comprehensive understanding of the Fermi surface topology of PbTaSe$_2$, including nailing down the Fermi level and detecting the Berry phases near the nodal rings, is crucial for searching plausible topological superconductivity in its bulk and surface states.
Being motivated by intriguing phenomena such as the breakdown of conventional bulk boundary correspondence and emergence of skin modes in the context of non-Hermitian (NH) topological insulators, we here propose a NH second-order topological superconductor (SOTSC) model that hosts Majorana zero modes (MZMs). Employing the non-Bloch form of NH Hamiltonian, we topologically characterize the above modes by biorthogonal nested polarization and resolve the apparent breakdown of the bulk boundary correspondence. Unlike the Hermitian SOTSC, we notice that the MZMs inhabit only one corner out of four …
Proximity-induced superconductivity in three dimensional (3D) topological insulators forms a new quantum phase of matter and accommodates exotic quasiparticles such as Majorana bound states. One of the biggest drawbacks of the commonly studied 3D topological insulators is the presence of conducting bulk that obscures both surface states and low energy bound states. Introducing superconductivity in topological Kondo insulators such as SmB$_6$, however, is promising due to their true insulating bulk at low temperatures. In this work, we develop an unconventional Josephson junction by coupling su…
Superconductivity, discovered by Kamerlingh Onnes in 1911, continues to be a fascinating subject of condensed matter physics today. Much interest has been devoted to the study of the superconductivity induced in a metal which by itself is not superconducting but is in electrical contact with a superconductor. As the carriers of superconductivity, the Cooper pairs, diffuse across the contact into the metal they remain correlated, although the pairing mechanism is lifted; we call this the proximity effect. The observation of these superconducting correlations has come within the reach of experim…
