In the realm of open quantum systems, steady states and high-harmonic generation (HHG) existing far from equilibrium have become core pillars of ultrafast science. Most solid-state research explores charge HHG with limited investigations into spin degrees of freedom. In this study, we theoretically address spin HHG in the steady state resulting from the terahertz laser-driven spin-phonon coupling in a dissipative dimerized spin-1/2 chain. Instead of directly driving spins using time-dependent magnetic fields, we employ the magnetophononic mechanism, where the laser first drives the lattice, and then the excited lattice subsequently drives the spins. We investigate the role of various model parameters for optimizing HHG. Increasing the laser's amplitude amplifies spin HHG beyond the perturbative regime, enhancing both harmonic amplitudes and orders. We find that configuring the drive frequency far below the spin band yields the highest harmonic order. Additionally, we provide a theory matching the numerical results under weak spin-phonon coupling and propose an experimental procedure to probe the emission spectrum of spin HHG.
Nonlinear processes involving frequency-mixing of light fields set the basis for ultrafast coherent spectroscopy of collective modes in solids. In certain semimetals and semiconductors, generation of coherent phonon modes can occur by a displacive force on the lattice at the difference-frequency mixing of a laser pulse excitation on the electronic system. Here, as a low-frequency counterpart of this process, we demonstrate that coherent phonon excitations can be induced by the sum-frequency components of an intense terahertz light field, coupled to intraband electronic transitions. This nonlin…
We present an investigation of the multiferroic lacunar spinel compound GeV$_4$S$_8$ using time-domain terahertz spectroscopy. We find three absorptions which either appear or shift at the antiferromagnetic transition temperature, T$_N = 17$ K, as S=1 magnetic moments develop on vanadium tetrahedra. Two of these absorptions are coupled to the magnetic state and one only appears below the Néel temperature, and is interpreted as a magnon. We also observe isosbestic points in the dielectric constant in both the temperature and frequency domains. Further, we perform analysis on the isosbestic feat…
We present a study of terahertz frequency magnetoelectric effect in ferrimagnetic pyroelectric CaBaCo$_4$O$_7$ and its Ni-doped variants. The terahertz absorption spectrum of these materials consists of spin excitations and low-frequency infrared-active phonons. We studied the magnetic-field-induced changes in the terahertz refractive index and absorption in magnetic fields up to 17 T. We find that the magnetic field modulates the strength of infrared-active optical phonons near 1.2 and 1.6 THz. We use the Lorentz model of the dielectric function to analyze the measured magnetic-field dependen…
Intense, single-cycle terahertz (THz) pulses offer a promising approach for understanding and controlling the properties of a material on an ultrafast time scale. In particular, resonantly exciting phonons leads to a better understanding of how they couple to other degrees of freedom in the material (e.g., ferroelectricity, conductivity and magnetism) while enabling coherent control of lattice vibrations and the symmetry changes associated with them. However, an ultrafast method for observing the resulting structural changes at the atomic scale is essential for studying phonon dynamics. A simp…
Photodetection is an indispensable function of optoelectronic devices in modern communication and sensing systems. Contrary to the near-infrared/visible regions, the fast and sensitive photodetectors operated at room temperature for the far-infrared/terahertz regions are not well developed despite a possibly vast range of applications. The bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) in single-phase noncentrosymmetric materials based on the shift current mechanism enables less-dissipative energy conversion endowed with instantaneous responsivity owing to the quantum-mechanical geometric phase of electronic…
We report on high-order harmonic generation in the two-band superconductor MgB$_2$ driven by intense terahertz electromagnetic pulses. Third- and fifth-order harmonics are resolved in time domain and investigated as a function of temperature and in applied magnetic fields crossing the superconducting phase boundary. The high-order harmonics in the superconducting phase reflects nonequilibrium dynamics of the superconducting order parameter in MgB$_2$, which is probed via nonlinear coupling to the terahertz field. The observed temperature and field dependence of the nonlinear response allows to…

We study the nonlinear optical response in a superconducting NbN thin film with strong terahertz (THz)wave. Besides the expected third harmonic generation, we observe a new transient oscillation which softensin frequency with temperature increasing towards superconducting transition temperatureTc. We identify thisnew mode as the Higgs transient oscillation. To verify this proposal, we introduce a time-frequency resolvedtechnique, named spectrogram for visualizing THz spectrum. The dynamic decaying behavior of the mode isobserved, which is consistent with theoretical expectation about intrinsic…
High-harmonic spectroscopy has become an essential ingredient in probing various ultrafast electronic processes in solids with sub-cycle temporal resolution. Despite its immense importance, sensitivity of high-harmonic spectroscopy to phonon dynamics in solids is not well known. This work addresses this critical question and demonstrates the potential of high-harmonic spectroscopy in probing intertwined phonon-electron dynamics in solids. A pump pulse excites in-plane optical phonon modes in monolayer graphene and a circularly polarised pulse is employed to probe the excited phonon dynamics th…
