Conventional Computed Tomography (CT) imaging recognition faces two significant challenges: (1) There is often considerable variability in the resolution and size of each CT scan, necessitating strict requirements for the input size and adaptability of models. (2) CT-scan contains large number of out-of-distribution (OOD) slices. The crucial features may only be present in specific spatial regions and slices of the entire CT scan. How can we effectively figure out where these are located? To deal with this, we introduce an enhanced Spatial-Slice Feature Learning (SSFL++) framework specifically designed for CT scan. It aim to filter out a OOD data within whole CT scan, enabling our to select crucial spatial-slice for analysis by reducing 70% redundancy totally. Meanwhile, we proposed Kernel-Density-based slice Sampling (KDS) method to improve the stability when training and inference stage, therefore speeding up the rate of convergence and boosting performance. As a result, the experiments demonstrate the promising performance of our model using a simple EfficientNet-2D (E2D) model, even with only 1% of the training data. The efficacy of our approach has been validated on the COVID-19-CT-DB datasets provided by the DEF-AI-MIA workshop, in conjunction with CVPR 2024. The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has led to a devastating effect on the global public health. Computed Tomography (CT) is an effective tool in the screening of COVID-19. It is of great importance to rapidly and accurately segment COVID-19 from CT to help diagnostic and patient monitoring. In this paper, we propose a U-Net based segmentation network using attention mechanism. As not all the features extracted from the encoders are useful for segmentation, we propose to incorporate an attention mechanism including a spatial and a channel attention, to a U-Net architecture to re-weight…

Coronavirus Disease spread globally and infected millions of people quickly, causing high pressure on the health-system facilities. PCR screening is the adopted diagnostic testing method for COVID-19 detection. However, PCR is criticized due its low sensitivity ratios, also, it is time-consuming and manual complicated process. CT imaging proved its ability to detect the disease even for asymptotic patients, which make it a trustworthy alternative for PCR. In addition, the appearance of COVID-19 infections in CT slices, offers high potential to support in disease evolution monitoring using auto…

Computed tomography (CT) has been widely explored as a COVID-19 screening and assessment tool to complement RT-PCR testing. To assist radiologists with CT-based COVID-19 screening, a number of computer-aided systems have been proposed. However, many proposed systems are built using CT data which is limited in both quantity and diversity. Motivated to support efforts in the development of machine learning-driven screening systems, we introduce COVIDx CT-3, a large-scale multinational benchmark dataset for detection of COVID-19 cases from chest CT images. COVIDx CT-3 includes 431,205 CT slices f…

The outbreak of the novel coronavirus, officially declared a global pandemic, has a severe impact on our daily lives. As of this writing there are approximately 197,188 confirmed cases of which 80,881 are in "Mainland China" with 7,949 deaths, a mortality rate of 3.4%. In order to support radiologists in this overwhelming challenge, we develop a deep learning based algorithm that can detect, localize and quantify severity of COVID-19 manifestation from chest CT scans. The algorithm is comprised of a pipeline of image processing algorithms which includes lung segmentation, 2D slice classificati…
This paper presents a novel lightweight COVID-19 diagnosis framework using CT scans. Our system utilises a novel two-stage approach to generate robust and efficient diagnoses across heterogeneous patient level inputs. We use a powerful backbone network as a feature extractor to capture discriminative slice-level features. These features are aggregated by a lightweight network to obtain a patient level diagnosis. The aggregation network is carefully designed to have a small number of trainable parameters while also possessing sufficient capacity to generalise to diverse variations within differ…
With the massive damage in the world caused by Coronavirus Disease 2019 SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), many related research topics have been proposed in the past two years. The Chest Computed Tomography (CT) scans are the most valuable materials to diagnose the COVID-19 symptoms. However, most schemes for COVID-19 classification of Chest CT scan is based on a single-slice level, implying that the most critical CT slice should be selected from the original CT scan volume manually. We simultaneously propose 2-D and 3-D models to predict the COVID-19 of CT scan to tickle this issue. In our 2-D model, we…

The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has rapidly spread into a global pandemic. A form of pneumonia, presenting as opacities with in a patient's lungs, is the most common presentation associated with this virus, and great attention has gone into how these changes relate to patient morbidity and mortality. In this work we provide open source models for the segmentation of patterns of pulmonary opacification on chest Computed Tomography (CT) scans which have been correlated with various stages and severities of infection. We have collected 663 chest CT scans of COVID-…
This paper investigates the application of deep learning models for lung Computed Tomography (CT) image analysis. Traditional deep learning frameworks encounter compatibility issues due to variations in slice numbers and resolutions in CT images, which stem from the use of different machines. Commonly, individual slices are predicted and subsequently merged to obtain the final result; however, this approach lacks slice-wise feature learning and consequently results in decreased performance. We propose a novel slice selection method for each CT dataset to address this limitation, effectively fi…

We present an automatic COVID1-19 diagnosis framework from lung CT-scan slice images. In this framework, the slice images of a CT-scan volume are first proprocessed using segmentation techniques to filter out images of closed lung, and to remove the useless background. Then a resampling method is used to select one or multiple sets of a fixed number of slice images for training and validation. A 3D CNN network with BERT is used to classify this set of selected slice images. In this network, an embedding feature is also extracted. In cases where there are more than one set of slice images in a …

The newly discovered Corona virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been globally spreading and causing hundreds of thousands of deaths around the world as of its first emergence in late 2019. Computed tomography (CT) scans have shown distinctive features and higher sensitivity compared to other diagnostic tests, in particular the current gold standard, i.e., the Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) test. Current deep learning-based algorithms are mainly developed based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to identify COVID-19 pneumonia cases. CNNs, however, require extensive …

Thus, automated detection of COVID-19 utilizing deep learning on chest computed tomography (CT) scans became promising, which helps correct diagnosis efficiently. Recently, transformer-based COVID-19 detection method on CT is proposed to utilize 3D information in CT volume. However, its sampling method for selecting slices is not optimal. To leverage rich 3D information in CT volume, we propose a transformer-based COVID-19 detection using a novel data curation and a…

We present a novel algorithm that is able to classify COVID-19 pneumonia from CT Scan slices using a very small sample of training images exhibiting COVID-19 pneumonia in tandem with a larger number of normal images. This algorithm is able to achieve high classification accuracy using as few as 10 positive training slices (from 10 positive cases), which to the best of our knowledge is one order of magnitude fewer than the next closest published work at the time of writing. Deep learning with extremely small positive training volumes is a very difficult problem and has been an important topic d…
COVID-19 is an infectious disease that causes respiratory problems similar to those caused by SARS-CoV (2003). Currently, swab samples are being used for its diagnosis. The most common testing method used is the RT-PCR method, which has high specificity but variable sensitivity. AI-based detection has the capability to overcome this drawback. In this paper, we propose a prospective method wherein we use chest CT scans to diagnose the patients for COVID-19 pneumonia. We use a set of open-source images, available as individual CT slices, and full CT scans from a private Indian Hospital to train …

Detecting COVID-19 in computed tomography (CT) or radiography images has been proposed as a supplement to the definitive RT-PCR test. We present a deep learning ensemble for detecting COVID-19 infection, combining slice-based (2D) and volume-based (3D) approaches. The 2D system detects the infection on each CT slice independently, combining them to obtain the patient-level decision via different methods (averaging and long-short term memory networks). The 3D system takes the whole CT volume to arrive to the patient-level decision in one step. A new high resolution chest CT scan dataset, called…

This 3D-CNN-BERT classification network is first trained on sampled fixed number of slice images from every original CT scan volume. In the second stage, the 3D-CNN-BERT embedding features are extract…
