We analyze through the expectation value of the energy density the spatial nonlocality of single photons emitted by the spontaneous decay of a Hydrogen atom. By using a minimal coupling between the quantized electromagnetic field and the atom, we compute the state of the photon under the assumption that only a single-photon is produced. The calculations are thus performed in the subspace of single-photon states which is essentially equivalent to the rotating wave approximation. We obtain a characterization of the spatial decay of the energy density. We compute the asymptotic limit of large distances from the atom at each given time, and find an algebraic behavior of $1/r^6$. This result confirms that the energy density of single-photon states is nonlocal and the algebraic decay is far from the maximal quasiexponential localization predicted by the theory.
In practical quantum networks, a variety of multi-qubit stabilized states emitted from independent sources are distributed among the agents, and the correlations across the entire network can be derived from each agent's local measurements on the shared composite quantum systems. To reveal the Bell non-locality in such cases as a quantum feature, minimal knowledge of the emitted stabilizer state is required. Here, we demonstrate that knowing the stabilizing and logical operators indeed provides a new way of exploring Bell non-locality in quantum networks. For the qubit distribution in quantum …
We present the idea of searching for X-rays as a signature of the mechanism inducing the spontaneous collapse of the wave function. Such a signal is predicted by the continuous spontaneous localization theories, which are solving the "measurement problem" by modifying the Schrodinger equation. We will show some encouraging preliminary results and discuss future plans and strategy.
Counting the microwave photons emitted by an ensemble of electron spins when they relax radiatively has recently been proposed as a sensitive method for electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, enabled by the development of operational Single Microwave Photon Detectors (SMPD) at millikelvin temperature. Here, we report the detection of spin echoes in the spin fluorescence signal. The echo manifests itself as a coherent modulation of the number of photons spontaneously emitted after a $π/2_X - τ- π_Y - τ- π/2_Φ$ sequence, dependent on the relative phase $Φ$. We demonstrate experiment…
Some predictions regarding pre- and post-selected states are far-reaching, thereby requiring validation with standard quantum measurements in addition to the customary weak measurements used so far, as well as other advanced techniques. We go further pursuing this goal, proposing two thought experiments which incorporate novel yet feasible validation methods of unconventional light-matter interactions. An excited atom traverses a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) under a special combination of pre- and post-selection. In the first experiment, photons emitted by the superposed atom, after being…
Certification of nonlocality of quantum mechanics is an important fundamental test that typically requires prolonged data collection and is only revealed in an in-depth analysis. These features are often particularly exposed in hybrid systems, such as interfaces between light and atomic ensembles. Certification of entanglement from images acquired with single-photon camera can mitigate this issue by exploiting multiplexed photon generation. Here we demonstrate this feature in a quantum memory (QM) operating in a real-time feedback mode. Through spatially-multimode spin-wave storage the QM enab…
Frequency-multiplexed quantum communication usually requires a single-shot identification of the frequency mode of a single photon . In this paper, we propose a scheme that can identify the frequency mode with high-resolution even for spontaneously emitted photons whose generation time is unknown, by combining the time-to-space and frequency-to-time mode mapping. We also demonstrate the mapping of the frequency mode (100 MHz intervals) to the temporal mode (435 ns intervals) for weak coherent pulses using atomic frequency combs. This frequency interval is close to the minimum frequency mode in…
Scattering of light by matter has been studied extensively in the past. Yet, the most fundamental process, the scattering of a single photon by a single atom, is largely unexplored [1-3]. One prominent prediction of quantum optics is the deterministic absorption of a traveling photon by a single atom, provided the photon waveform matches spatially and temporally the time-reversed version of a spontaneously emitted photon [4-12]. Here, we experimentally address this prediction and investigate the influence of the temporal profile of the photon on the scattering dynamics using a single trapped a…
Recently, it has been suggested that the collective radiative decay of two point-like quantum emitters coupled to a waveguide, separated by a distance comparable to the coherence length of a spontaneously emitted photon, leads to an apparent $^{\prime}$superradiance paradox$^{\prime}$ by which one cannot decide whether independent or collective emission occurs. The resolution of the paradox stems from the strong non-Markovian dynamics arising from the delayed field-mediated atom interaction. Here we suggest an integrated optics platform to emulate the superradiance paradox, based on photon esc…
Single-photon sources are subjected to a fundamental limitation in the speed of operation dictated by the spontaneous emission rate of quantum emitters (QEs). The current paradigm of the rate acceleration suggests coupling of a QE to a metal nanostructure, in particular, a metal nanoparticle (MNP). Here, we demonstrate that, in contrast to this approach, a MNP itself can behave as a quantum emitter. We determine both the first- and second-order correlation functions of light spontaneously emitted by a MNP strongly coupled to a QE and show that this light should exhibit sub-Poissonian photon st…
An investigation is reported of the collective effects and the dynamics of atom atom entanglement in a system of two distant two level atoms which are coupled via an optical element. In the system under consideration, the two atoms, which are trapped in the foci of a lens, are coupled to a common environment being in the vacuum state and they emit photons spontaneously. A fraction of the emitted photons from each atom is thus focused on the position of the other atom. The presence of optical element between two distant atoms leads to the occurrence of delayed collective effects, such as delaye…
The concepts of work and heat in the quantum domain, as well as their interconversion principles, are still an open debate. We have found theoretical evidence that a single photon packet is capable of extracting work from a single two-level system (TLS). More importantly, this effect is found for a photon as it is spontaneously emitted, therefore carrying only heat away from the emitter. This is the most elementary process in which heat is converted into work, requiring not more than two off-resonance atoms for that purpose. From a more practical point of view it is found that, surprisingly, w…

The characteristics of a single-photon emitter based on a semiconductor quantum dot, such as their indistinguishability and brightness, depend on the stability of the recombination channel, which can switch spontaneously between exciton and trion. We show that dominant recombination through neutral exciton states can be achieved by careful control of the doping profile near an epitaxial InAs/GaAs quantum dot placed in a columnar microcavity with distributed Bragg reflectors. The Hong-Ou-Mandel experiments carried out in the fabricated device demonstrate the degree of indistinguishability of 91…
