We report an experimental demonstration of resonance fluorescence in a two-level superconducting artificial atom under two driving fields coupled to a detuned cavity. One of the fields is classical and the other is varied from quantum (vacuum fluctuations) to classical one by controlling the photon number inside the cavity. The device consists of a transmon qubit strongly coupled to a one-dimensional transmission line and a coplanar waveguide resonator. We observe a sideband anti-crossing and asymmetry in the emission spectra of the system through a one-dimensional transmission line, which is fundamentally different from the weak coupling case. By changing the photon number inside the cavity, the emission spectrum of our doubly driven system approaches to the case when the atom is driven by two classical bichromatic fields. We also measure the dynamical evolution of the system through the transmission line and study the properties of the first-order correlation function, Rabi oscillations and energy relaxation in the system. The study of resonance fluorescence from an atom driven by two fields promotes understanding decoherence in superconducting quantum circuits and may find applications in superconducting quantum computing and quantum networks.
We report the first experimental demonstration of interference-induced spectral line elimination predicted by Zhu and Scully [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 388 (1996)] and Ficek and Rudolph [Phys. Rev. A 60, 4245 (1999)]. We drive an exciton transition of a self-assembled quantum dot in order to realize a two-level system exposed to bichromatic laser field and observe nearly complete elimination of the resonance fluorescence spectral line at the driving laser frequency. This is caused by quantum interference between coupled transitions among the doubly dressed excitonic states, without population trapp…
In this work, robustness of controlled density of optical states in doubly driven artificial atoms is studied under phonon dissipation. By using both perturbative and polaron approaches, we investigate the influence of carrier-phonon interactions on the emission properties of a two-level solid-state emitter, simultaneously coupled to two intense distinguishable lasers. Phonon decoherence effects on the emission spectra are found modest up to neon boiling temperatures ($\sim 30$ K), as compared with photon generation at the Fourier transform limit obtained in absence of lattice vibrations (zero…
Recently, the splitting of a topologically created doubly quantized vortex into two singly quantized vortices was experimentally investigated in dilute atomic cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates [Y. Shin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 160406 (2004)]. In particular, the dependency of the splitting time on the peak particle density was studied. We present results of theoretical simulations which closely mimic the experimental set-up. Contrary to previous theoretical studies, claiming that thermal excitations are the essential mechanism in initiating the splitting, we show that the combination o…
The recent experiment by Y. Shin \emph{et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{93}, 160406 (2004)] on the decay of a doubly quantized vortex imprinted in $^{23}% $Na condensates is analyzed by numerically solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Our results, which are in very good quantitative agreement with the experiment, demonstrate that the vortex decay is mainly a consequence of dynamical instability. Despite apparent contradictions, the local density approach is consistent with the experimental results. The monotonic increase observed in the vortex lifetimes is a consequence of the fact that, fo…
We investigate the quantum state generated by optical parametric down-conversion in a $χ^{(2) } $ medium driven by two noncollinear light modes. The analysis shows the emergence of multipartite, namely 3- or 4-partite, entangled states in a subset of the spatio-temporal modes generated by the process. These appear as bright spots against the background fluorescence, providing an interesting analogy with the phenomenology recently observed in two-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystals. We study two realistic setups: i) Non-critical phase-matching in a periodically poled Lithium Tantalate slab,…
We present an analytical expression for the response of a transient spectrum to a single-Cooper-pair box biased by a classical voltage and irradiated by a single-mode quantized field. The exact solution of the model is obtained, by means of which we analyze the analytic form of the fluorescence spectrum using the transitions among the dressed states of the system. An interesting relation between the fluorescence spectrum and the dynamical evolution is found when the initial field states are prepared in binomial states.
Reconstruction of the dynamics (quantum process tomography) of the single-exciton manifold in energy transfer systems is proposed here on the basis of two-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy (2D-FS) with phase-modulation. The quantum-process-tomography protocol introduced here benefits from, e.g., the sensitivity enhancement ascribed to 2D-FS. Although the isotropically averaged spectroscopic signals depend on the quantum yield parameter $Γ$ of the doubly-excited-exciton manifold, it is shown that the reconstruction of the dynamics is insensitive to this parameter. Applications to foundation…
This paper is concerned with two rather basic phenomena: the incoherent fluorescence spectrum of an atom driven by an intense laser field and the coupling of the atom to the (empty) modes of the radiation field. The sum of the many-photon processes gives rise to the inelastic part of the atomic fluorescence, which, for a two-level system, has a well-known characteristic three-peak structure known as the Mollow spectrum. From a theoretical point of view, the Mollow spectrum finds a natural interpretation in terms of transitions among laser-dressed states which are the energy eigenstates of a se…
The Stokes and anti-Stokes components of the spectrum of resonance fluorescence of a single trapped atom, which originate from the mechanical coupling between the scattered photons and the quantized motion of the atomic center of mass, exhibit quantum correlations which are of two-mode-squeezing type. We study and demonstrate the build-up of such correlations in a specific setup, which is experimentally accessible, and where the atom acts as efficient and continuous source of EPR-entangled, two-mode squeezed light.
We study in detail the dynamics of a non-stationary system composed of a Quantum Well confined in an optomechanical cavity. This system is investigated with classical and quantized motion of the cavity movable mirror. In both the cases, the cavity frequency is rapidly modulated in time. The resultant periodically modulated spectra is presented. In particular, we study the effect of two-photon process on the number of intracavity photons. The intensity of fluorescent light emitted by excitons in the quantum well is also examined for these non-stationary systems. It is observed that the initial …
We study a certain class of classical one dimensional piecewise linear maps. For these systems we introduce an infinite family of Markov partitions into equal cells. The symbolic dynamics generated by these systems is described by bistochastic (doubly stochastic) matrices. We analyze the structure of graphs generated from the corresponding symbolic dynamics. We demonstrate that the spectra of quantized graphs corresponding to the regular classical systems have locally Poissonian statistics, while quantized graphs derived from classically chaotic systems display statistical properties character…
We study the scattering of two-level atoms at narrow laser fields, modeled by a $δ$-shape intensity profile. The unique properties of these potentials allow us to give simple analytic solutions for one or two field zones. Several applications are studied: a single $δ$-laser may serve as a detector model for atom detection and arrival-time measurements, either by means of fluorescence or variations in occupation probabilities. We show that, in principle, this ideal detector can measure the particle density, the quantum mechanical flux, arrival time distributions or local kinetic energy densitie…
Various approaches to Quantum Gravity (such as String Theory and Doubly Special Relativity), as well as black hole physics predict a minimum measurable length, or a maximum observable momentum, and related modifications of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle to a so-called Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP). We propose a GUP consistent with String Theory, Doubly Special Relativity and black hole physics, and show that this modifies all quantum mechanical Hamiltonians. When applied to an elementary particle, it implies that the space which confines it must be quantized. This suggests that…

Quantum control of atoms at ultrashort distances from surfaces would open a new paradigm in quantum optics and offer a novel tool for the investigation of near-surface physics. Here, we investigate the motional states of atoms that are bound weakly to the surface of a hot optical nanofiber. We theoretically demonstrate that with optimized mechanical properties of the nanofiber these states are quantized despite phonon-induced decoherence. We further show that it is possible to influence their properties with additional nanofiber-guided light fields and suggest heterodyne fluorescence spectrosc…
Exact solutions are presented of the Dirac equation of a charged particle moving in a classical monochromatic electromagnetic plane wave in a medium of index of refraction n < 1. The found solutions are expressed in terms of new complex trigonometric polynomials, which form a doubly infinite set labeled by two integer quantum numbers. These quantum numbers represent quantized spectra of the energy-momentum components of the charged particle along the polarization vector and along the propagation direction of the applied electromagnetic plane wave field (which is considered as a laser field of …
We present exact energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the one-dimensional hydrogen atom in the framework of the Generalized (Gravitational) Uncertainty Principle (GUP). This form of GUP is consistent with various theories of quantum gravity such as string theory, loop quantum gravity, black-hole physics, and doubly special relativity and implies a minimal length uncertainty and a maximal momentum. We show that the quantized energy spectrum exactly agrees with the semiclassical results.
We calculate the resonance fluorescence signal of a two-level system coupled to a quantized phonon mode. By treating the phonons in the independent boson model and not performing any approximations in their description, we also have access to the state evolution of the phonons. We confirm the validity of our model by simulating the limit of an initial quasi-classical coherent phonon state, which can be compared to experimentally confirmed results in the semiclassical limit. In addition we predict photon scattering spectra in the limit of purely quantum mechanical phonon states by approaching t…
