We present a study on the energy radiation rate and waveforms of the gravitational wave generated by coalescing spinless binary systems up to the third post-Minkowskian approximation in the effective one-body theory. To derive an analytical expansion of the null tetrad components of the gravitational perturbed Weyl tensor $\varPsi_{4}$ in the effective spacetime, we utilize the method proposed by Sasaki $et$ $al.$ During this investigation, we discover more general integral formulas that provide a theoretical framework for computing the results in any order. Subsequently, we successfully compute the energy radiation rate and waveforms of the gravitational wave, which include the results of the Schwarzschild case and the correction terms resulting from the dimensionless parameters $a_{2}$ and $a_{3}$ in the effective metric.
We present a comprehensive comparison between numerical relativity (NR) angular momentum fluxes at infinity and the corresponding quantity entering the radiation reaction in TEOBResumS, an Effective-One-Body (EOB) waveform model for nonprecessing coalescing black hole binaries on quasi-circular orbits. This comparison prompted us to implement two changes in the model: (i) including Next-to-Quasi-Circular corrections in the $\ell=m$, $\ell\leq 5$ multipoles entering the radiation reaction and (ii) consequently updating the NR-informed spin-orbital sector of the model. This yields a new waveform…
We present a new effective-one-body (EOB) model for eccentric binary coalescences. The model stems from the state-of-the-art model TEOBResumS$\_$SM for circularized coalescing black-hole binaries, that is modified to explicitly incorporate eccentricity effects both in the radiation reaction and in the waveform. Using Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli type calculations of the gravitational wave losses as benchmarks, we find that a rather accurate ($\sim 1\%$) expression for the radiation reaction along mildly eccentric orbits ($e \sim 0.3$) is given by dressing the current, EOB-resummed, circularized angul…
Spin precession is a generic feature of compact binary coalescences, which leaves clear imprints in the gravitational waveforms. Building on previous work, we present an efficient time domain inspiral-merger-ringdown effective-one-body model (EOB) for precessing binary black holes, which incorporates subdominant modes beyond $\ell=2$, and the first EOB frequency domain approximant for precessing binary neutron stars. We validate our model against 99 ``short'' numerical relativity precessing waveforms, where we find median mismatches of $5\times 10^{-3}$, $7 \times 10^{-3}$ at inclinations of $…
We perform new longterm (15-16 orbits) simulations of coalescing binary neutron stars in numerical relativity using an updated Einstein's equation solver, employing low-eccentricity initial data, and modeling the neutron stars by a piecewise polytropic equation of state. A convergence study shows that our new results converge more rapidly than the third order and using the determined convergence order, we construct an extrapolated waveform for which the estimated total phase error should be less than 1 radian. We then compare the extrapolated waveforms with those calculated by the latest effec…
Extending our previous studies, we perform high-resolution simulations of inspiraling binary neutron stars in numerical relativity. We thoroughly carry through a convergence study in our currently available computational resources with the smallest grid spacing of $\approx 63$--86~meter for the neutron-star radius 10.9--13.7\,km. The estimated total error in the gravitational-wave phase is of order 0.1~rad for the total phase of $\gtrsim 210$\,rad in the last $\sim 15$--16 inspiral orbits. We then compare the waveforms (without resolution extrapolation) with those calculated by the latest effe…
TEOBResumS and SEOBNRv4 are the two existing semi-analytical gravitational waveform models for spin-aligned coalescing black hole binaries based on the effective-one-body approach. They are informed by numerical relativity simulations and provide the relative dynamics and waveforms from early inspiral to plunge, merger and ringdown The central building block of each model is the EOB resummed Hamiltonian. The two models implement different Hamiltonians that are both deformations of the Hamiltonian of a test spinning black hole moving around a Kerr black hole. Here we analytically compare, element …
Combining new gravitational waveforms derived by long-term (14--16 orbits) numerical-relativity simulations with waveforms by an effective-one-body (EOB) formalism for coalescing binary neutron stars, we construct hybrid waveforms and estimate the measurability for the dimensionless tidal deformability of the neutron stars, $Λ$, by advanced gravitational-wave detectors. We focus on the equal-mass case with the total mass $2.7M_\odot$. We find that for an event at a hypothetical effective distance of $D_{\rm eff}=200$ Mpc, the distinguishable difference in the dimensionless tidal deformability …
Parameter estimation for coalescing massive binary black holes with LISA using the full 2-post-Newtonian gravitational waveform and spin-orbit precession
The excitation of $f$-mode in a neutron star member of coalescing binaries accelerates the merger course, and thereby introduces a phase shift in the gravitational waveform. Emphasising on the tidal phase shift by aligned, rotating stars, we provide an accurate, yet economical, method to generate $f$-mode-involved, pre-merger waveforms using realistic spin-modulated $f$-mode frequencies for some viable equations of state. We find for slow-rotating stars that the dephasing effects of the dynamical tides can be uniquely, EOS-independently determined by the direct observables (chirp mass ${\cal M…
Recent studies suggest that coalescing neutron stars are subject to a fluid instability involving the nonlinear coupling of the tide to $p$-modes and $g$-modes. Its influence on the inspiral dynamics and thus the gravitational wave signal is, however, uncertain because we do not know precisely how the instability saturates. Here we construct a simple, physically motivated model of the saturation that allows us to explore the instability's impact as a function of the model parameters. We find that for plausible assumptions about the saturation, current gravitational wave detectors might miss $>…
We present TEOBResumS, a new effective-one-body (EOB) waveform model for nonprecessing (spin-aligned) and tidally interacting compact binaries.Spin-orbit and spin-spin effects are blended together by making use of the concept of centrifugal EOB radius. The point-mass sector through merger and ringdown is informed by numerical relativity (NR) simulations of binary black holes (BBH) computed with the SpEC and BAM codes. An improved, NR-based phenomenological description of the postmerger waveform is developed. The tidal sector of TEOBResumS describes the dynamics of neutron star binaries up to me…
Effective-one-body waveform model for noncircularized, planar, coalescing black hole binaries II:high accuracy by improving logarithmic terms in resummations
The origin and formation of stellar-mass binary black holes remains an open question that can be addressed by precise measurements of the binary and orbital parameters from their gravitational-wave signal. Such binaries are expected to circularize due to the emission of gravitational waves as they approach merger. However, depending on their formation channel, some binaries could have a non-negligible eccentricity when entering the frequency band of current gravitational-wave detectors. In order to measure eccentricity in an observed gravitational-wave signal, accurate waveform models that des…
Gravitational-wave observations of binary black holes currently rely on theoretical models that predict the dominant multipoles (l,m) of the radiation during inspiral, merger and ringdown. We introduce a simple method to include the subdominant multipoles to binary black hole gravitational waveforms, given a frequency-domain model for the dominant multipoles. The amplitude and phase of the original model are appropriately stretched and rescaled using post-Newtonian results (for the inspiral), perturbation theory (for the ringdown), and a smooth transition between the two. No additional tuning …
Computationally efficient waveforms are of central importance for gravitational wave data analysis of inspiralling and coalescing compact binaries. We show that the post-adiabatic (PA) approximation to the effective-one-body (EOB) description of the binary dynamics, when pushed to high-order, allows one to accurately and efficiently compute the waveform of coalescing binary neutron stars (BNSs) or black holes (BBHs) up to a few orbits before merger. This is accomplished bypassing the usual need of numerically solving the relative EOB dynamics described by a set of ordinary differential equatio…
We report results of numerical relativity simulations for {\it new} 26 non-spinning binary neutron star systems with 6 grid resolutions using an adaptive mesh refinement numerical re\ lativity code {\tt SACRA-MPI}. The finest grid spacing is $\approx 64$--$85$ m, depending on the systems. First, we derive long-term high-precision inspiral gravitational waveforms and show that the accumulated gravitational-wave phase error due to the finite grid resolution is less than $0.5$ rad during more than $200$ rad phase evolution irrespective of the systems. We also find that the gravitational-wave phas…
The second generation of gravitational-wave detectors is scheduled to start operations in 2015. Gravitational-wave signatures of compact binary coalescences could be used to accurately test the strong-field dynamical predictions of general relativity. Computationally expensive data analysis pipelines, including TIGER, have been developed to carry out such tests. As a means to cheaply assess whether a particular deviation from general relativity can be detected, Cornish et al. and Vallisneri recently proposed an approximate scheme to compute the Bayes factor between a general-relativity gravita…
We present an improved numerical relativity (NR) calibration of the new effective-one-body (EOB) model for coalescing non precessing spinning black hole binaries recently introduced by Damour and Nagar [Physical Review D 90, 044018 (2014)]. We do so by comparing the EOB predictions to both the phasing and the energetics provided by two independent sets of NR data covering mass ratios $1\leq q \leq 9.989$ and dimensionless spin range $-0.95\leq χ\leq +0.994$. One set of data is a subset of the Simulating eXtreme Spacetimes (SXS) catalog of public waveforms; the other set consists of new simulat…
The quest for distinguishing black holes (BH) from horizonless compact objects using gravitational wave (GW) signals from coalescing compact binaries can be helped by utilizing the phenomenon of tidal heating (TH), which leaves its imprint on binary waveforms through the horizon parameters. We investigate the effects of TH on GWs to probe the observability of the horizon parameters, mainly using Fisher matrix analysis to determine the errors and covariances between them. The horizon parameters are defined as $H_1$ and $H_2$ for the two binary components, with $H_{1,2} \in [0,1]$, and combined …
