The reduced state of a small system strongly coupled to a thermal bath may be athermal and used as a small battery once disconnected. If the disconnecting process is too slow, the coupling between the battery and the bath weakens, and at some point, the battery will be in a thermal state that can not be used as a battery. Thus, the unitarily extractable energy (a.k.a ergotropy) decreases with the disconnection time. The work required to disconnect the battery also depends on the disconnection time. We study the efficiency of this battery, defined as the ratio between the ergotropy to the work cost of disconnecting and connecting the battery back to the bath to close the cycle, as a function of the disconnecting time in the Caldeira-Leggett model of a quantum battery. We consider two scenarios. In the first scenario, we assume that the discharged battery is uncorrelated to the bath at the connecting time and find that the efficiency peaks at an optimal disconnecting time. In the second scenario, the discharged battery is correlated to the bath, and find that the optimal efficiency corresponds to an instantaneous disconnection. On top of these results, we analyze various thermodynamic quantities for these Caldeira-Leggett quantum batteries that allow us to express the first and second laws of thermodynamics in the mentioned cycles in simple form despite the system-bath initial correlations and strong coupling regime of the working device.
Collective Quantum Batteries and Charger-Battery Setup in Open Quantum Systems: Impact of Inter-Qubit Interactions, Dissipation, and Quantum Criticality
The presence of symmetries in a closed many-body quantum system results in integrability. For such integrable systems, complete thermalization does not occur. As a result, the system remains non-ergodic. On the other hand, a set of non-interacting atoms connected to a regular bosonic bath thermalizes. Here, we show that such atoms in a spatially-correlated thermal bath can show both the behavior depending on the temperature. At zero temperature, the bath has a large correlation length, and hence it acts as a common environment. In this condition, a set of weak symmetries exist, which prevent t…
A system in thermal equilibrium with a bath will generally be in an athermal state, if the system-bath coupling is strong. In some cases, it will be possible to extract work from that athermal state, after disconnecting the system from the bath. We use this observation to devise a battery charging and storing unit, simply consisting of a system, acting as the battery, and a bath. The charging cycle---connect, let thermalize, disconnect, extract work---requires very little external control and the charged state of the battery, being a part of global thermal equilibrium, can be maintained indefi…
We study the dynamics of entanglement in a two-qubit system interacting with a squeezed thermal bath via a dissipative system-reservoir interaction with the system and reservoir assumed to be in a separable initial state. The resulting entanglement is studied by making use of a recently introduced measure of mixed state entanglement via a probability density function which gives a statistical and geometrical characterization of entanglement by exploring the entanglement content in the various subspaces spanning the two-qubit Hilbert space. We also make an application of the two-qubit dissipati…
We show that a cyclic unitary process can extract work from the thermodynamic equilibrium state of an engineered quantum dissipative process. Systems in the equilibrium states of these processes serve as batteries, storing energy. The dissipative process that brings the battery to the active equilibrium state is driven by an agent that couples the battery to thermal systems. The second law of thermodynamics imposes a work cost for the process; however, no work is needed to keep the battery in that charged state. We consider simple examples of these batteries and discuss particular cases in whi…
We study the energy transfer process in quantum battery systems consisting of multiple central spins and bath spins. Here with "quantum battery" we refer to the central spins, whereas the bath serves as the "charger". For the single central-spin battery, we analytically derive the time evolutions of the energy transfer and the charging power with arbitrary number of bath spins. For the case of multiple central spins in the battery, we find the scaling-law relation between the maximum power $P_{max}$ and the number of central spins $N_B$. It approximately satisfies a scaling law relation $P_{ma…
In the long-time limit, an open quantum system coupled to a dissipative environment is believed to lose its coherence without driving or measurement. Counterintuitively, we provide a necessary condition on trapping the coherence of a two-level system entirely with a thermal bath. Based on a time-local master equation, it is found that the residue coherence survives even under a high-temperature bath as long as the long-time Lamb shift is exactly negative to the system transition frequency. This condition is generally met in the strong and even ultrastrong coupling regime that could be relaxed …
We quantitatively study the out-of-equilibrium edge-Majorana correlation in a linearly ramped one-dimensional Kitaev chain of finite length in a dissipative environment. The chemical potential is dynamically ramped to drive the chain from its topologically trivial to nontrivial phase in the presence of couplings to nonthermal Markovian baths. We consider two distinctive situations: In the first situation, the bath is quasilocal in the site basis (local in quasiparticle basis) while in the other it is local. Following a Lindbladian approach, we compute the early time dynamics as well as the asy…
We report an anomalous decoherence phenomenon of a quantum dissipative system in the framework of a stochastic decoupling scheme along with a hierarchical equations-of-motion formalism without the usual Born-Markov or weak coupling approximations. It is found that the decoherence of a two-qubit spin-boson model can be reduced by increasing the bath temperature in strong-coupling regimes. For the weak-coupling situation, we find that the bath temperature may enhance the decoherence. This result is contrary to the common recognition that a higher bath temperature always induces a more severe dec…
We calculate the exact Landau-Zener transitions probabilities for a qubit with arbitrary linear coupling to a bath at zero temperature. The final quantum state exhibits a peculiar entanglement between the qubit and the bath. In the special case of a diagonal coupling, the bath does not influence the transition probability, whatever the speed of the Landau-Zener sweep. It is proposed to use Landau-Zener transitions to determine both the reorganization energy and the integrated spectral density of the bath. Possible applications include circuit QED and molecular nanomagnets.
By employing the spin-boson model in a dense limit of environmental modes, quantum entanglement and correlation of sub-Ohmic and Ohmic baths for dissipative quantum phase transitions are numerically investigated based on the variational principle. With several measures borrowed from quantum information theory, three different types of singularities are found for the first-order, second-order, and Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transitions, respectively, and the values of transition points and critical exponents are accurately determined. Besides, the scaling form of the quantum discord in the Ohmic…
As an energy storing and converting device near atomic size, a quantum battery (QB) promises enhanced charging power and extractable work using quantum resources. However, the ubiquitous decoherence causes its cyclic charging-storing-discharging process to become deactivated, which is called aging of the QB. Here, we propose a mechanism to overcome the aging of a QB. It is found that the decoherence of the QB is suppressed when two Floquet bound states (FBSs) are formed in the quasienergy spectrum of the total system consisting of the QB-charger setup and their respective environments. As long…
We discuss work performed on a quantum two-level system coupled to multiple thermal baths. To evaluate the work, a measurement of photon exchange between the system and the baths is envisioned. In a realistic scenario, some photons remain unrecorded as they are exchanged with baths that are not accessible to the measurement, and thus only partial information on work and heat is available. The incompleteness of the measurement leads to substantial deviations from standard fluctuation relations. We propose a recovery of these relations, based on including the mutual information given by the coun…
The dissipative quantum dynamics of an anharmonic oscillator coupled to a bath is studied with the purpose of elucidating the differences between the relaxation to a spin bath and to a harmonic bath. Converged results are obtained for the spin bath by the Surrogate Hamiltonian approach. This method is based on constructing a system-bath Hamiltonian, with a finite but large number of spin bath modes, that mimics exactly a bath with an infinite number of modes for a finite time interval. Convergence with respect to the number of simultaneous excitations of bath modes can be checked. The results …
We study a driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard model in presence of two-particle losses and an incoherent single-particle drive on each lattice site, leading to a finite-density stationary state. Using dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) and an impurity solver based on exact diagonalization of the associated Lindbladian, we investigate the regime of strong two-particle losses. Here, a stationary-state quantum Zeno effect emerges, as can be seen in the on-site occupation and spectral function. We show that DMFT captures this effect through its self-consistent bath. We show that, in the deep Zeno reg…
We investigate the quantum annealing of the ferromagnetic $ p $-spin model in a dissipative environment ($ p = 5 $ and $ p = 7 $). This model, in the large $ p $ limit, codifies the Grover's algorithm for searching in an unsorted database. The dissipative environment is described by a phonon bath in thermal equilibrium at finite temperature. The dynamics is studied in the framework of a Lindblad master equation for the reduced density matrix describing only the spins. Exploiting the symmetries of our model Hamiltonian, we can describe many spins and extrapolate expected trends for large $ N $,…
The entanglement dynamics in a bipartite system consisting of a qubit and a harmonic oscillator interacting only through their coupling with the same bath is studied. The considered model assumes that the qubit is coupled to the bath via the Jaynes-Cummings interaction, whilst the position of the oscillator is coupled to the position of the bath via a dipole interaction. We give a microscopic derivation of the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad equation for the considered model. Based on the Kossakowski Matrix, we show that non-classical correlations including entanglement can be generated …
An explicit demonstration is given of a harmonic oscillator in equilibrium approaching the equilibrium of a corresponding interacting system by coupling it to a thermal bath consisting of a continuum of harmonic oscillators.
We analyze the static and dynamical properties of two Ising-coupled quantum spins embedded in a common bosonic bath as an archetype of dissipative quantum mechanics. First, we elucidate the ground state phase diagram for an ohmic and a subohmic bath using a combination of bosonic numerical renormalization group (NRG), analytical techniques and intuitive arguments. Second, employing the time-dependent NRG we investigate the system's rich dynamical behavior arising from the complex interplay between spin-spin and spin-bath interactions. Interestingly, spin oscillations can synchronize due to the…
We have investigated the time-evolution of a free particle in interaction with a phonon thermal bath, using the tight-binding approach. A dissipative quantum walk can be defined and many important non-equilibrium decoherence properties can be investigated analytically. The non-equilibrium statistics of a pure initial state have been studied. Our theoretical results indicate that the evolving wave-packet shows the suppression of Anderson's boundaries (ballistic peaks) by the presence of dissipation. Many important relaxation properties can be studied quantitatively, such as von Neumann's entrop…
Coupling with an external environment inevitably affects the dynamics of a quantum system. Here, we consider how charging performances of a quantum battery, modelled as a two level system, are influenced by the presence of an Ohmic thermal reservoir. The latter is coupled to both longitudinal and transverse spin components of the quantum battery including decoherence and pure dephasing mechanisms. Charging and discharging dynamics of the quantum battery, subjected to a static driving, are obtained exploiting a proper mapping into the so-called spin-boson model. Analytic expressions for the tim…
We consider a qubit coupled to a nonlinear quantum oscillator, the latter coupled to an Ohmic bath, and investigate the qubit dynamics. This composed system can be mapped onto that of a qubit coupled to an effective bath. An approximate mapping procedure to determine the spectral density of the effective bath is given. Specifically, within a linear response approximation the effective spectral density is given by the knowledge of the linear susceptibility of the nonlinear quantum oscillator. To determine the actual form of the susceptibility, we consider its periodically driven counterpart, th…
A model for a quantum register dissipatively coupled with a bosonic thermal bath is studied. The register consists of $N$ qubits (i.e. spin ${1/2}$ degrees of freedom), the bath is described by $N_b$ bosonic modes. The register-bath coupling is chosen in such a way that the total number of excitations is conserved. The Hilbert space splits allowing the study of the dynamics separately in each sector. Assuming that the coupling with the bath is the same for all qubits, the excitation sectors have a further decomposition according the irreducible representations of the $su(2)$ spin algebra. The …
We explore the possibility of dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) occurring during the temporal evolution of a quenched transverse field Ising chain coupled to a particle loss type of bath (local in Jordan-Wigner fermion space) using two versions of the Loschmidt overlap (LO), namely, the fidelity induced LO and the interferometric phase induced LO. The bath, on the one hand, dictates the dissipative evolution following a sudden quench and on the other, plays a role in dissipative mixed state preparation in the later part of the study. During a dissipative evolution following a sudden …
A novel method is introduced in order to treat the dissipative dynamics of quantum systems interacting with a bath of classical degrees of freedom. The method is based upon an extension of the Nosè-Hoover chain (constant temperature) dynamics to quantum-classical systems. Both adiabatic and nonadiabatic numerical calculations on the relaxation dynamics of the spin-boson model show that the quantum-classical Nosè-Hoover chain dynamics represents the thermal noise of the bath in an accurate and simple way. Numerical comparisons, both with the constant energy calculation and with the quantum-clas…
A Rabi dimer is used to model a recently reported circuit quantum electrodynamics system composed of two coupled transmission-line resonators with each coupled to one qubit. In this study, a phonon bath is adopted to mimic the multimode micromechanical resonators and is coupled to the qubits in the Rabi dimer. The dynamical behavior of the composite system is studied by the Dirac-Frenkel time-dependent variational principle combined with the multiple Davydov D$_{2}$ ansätze. Initially all the photons are pumped into the left resonator, and the two qubits are in the down state coupled with the …
Optimal state transfer of a single two-level system (TLS) coupled to an Ohmic boson bath via off-diagonal TLS-bath coupling is studied by using optimal control theory. In the weak system-bath coupling regime where the time-dependent Bloch-Redfield formalism is applicable, we obtain the Bloch equation to probe the evolution of the dissipative TLS in the presence of a time-dependent external control field. By using the automatic differentiation technique to compute the gradient for the cost functional, we calculate the optimal transfer integral profile that can achieve an ideal transfer within a…
We explore the dynamics and the steady state of a driven quantum spin coupled to a bath of fermions, which can be realized with a strongly imbalanced mixture of ultracold atoms using currently available experimental tools. Radio-frequency driving can be used to induce tunneling between the spin states. The Rabi oscillations are modified due to the coupling of the quantum spin to the environment, which causes frequency renormalization and damping. The spin-bath coupling can be widely tuned by adjusting the scattering length through a Feshbach resonance. When the scattering potential creates a b…
We revisit the issue of thermally assisted quantum annealing by a detailed study of the dissipative Landau-Zener problem in presence of a Caldeira-Leggett bath of harmonic oscillators, using both a weak-coupling quantum master equation and a quasi-adiabatic path-integral approach. Building on the known zero-temperature exact results (Wubs et al., PRL 97, 200404 (2006)), we show that a finite temperature bath can have a beneficial effect on the ground-state probability only if it couples also to a spin-direction that is transverse with respect to the driving field, while no improvement is obtai…
We study the geometric phase of an open two-level quantum system under the influence of a squeezed, thermal environment for both non-dissipative as well as dissipative system-environment interactions. In the non-dissipative case, squeezing is found to have a similar influence as temperature, of suppressing geometric phase, while in the dissipative case, squeezing tends to counteract the suppressive influence of temperature in certain regimes. Thus, an interesting feature that emerges from our work is the contrast in the interplay between squeezing and thermal effects in non-dissipative and dis…

We construct a global Lindblad master equation for a Kitaev quantum wire of finite length, weakly coupled to an arbitrary number of thermal baths, within the Born-Markov and secular approximations. We find that the coupling of an external bath to more than one lattice site generates quantum interference effects, arising from the possibility of fermions to tunnel through multiple paths. In the presence of two baths at different temperatures and/or chemical potentials, the steady-state particle current can be expressed through the Landauer-Büttiker formula, as in a ballistic transport setup, wit…
Fano models - consisting of a Hamiltonian with discrete-continuous spectrum - are one of the basic toy models in spectroscopy. They have been succesfull in explaining the lineshape of experiments in atomic physics and condensed matter. These models however have largely been out of the scope of dissipative dynamics, with ony a handful of works considering the effect of a thermal bath. Yet in nanostructures and condensed matter systems, dissipation strongly modulates the dynamics. In this article, we present an overview of the theoretical works dealing with Fano interferences coupled to a therma…
Quantum systems in contact with an environment display a rich physics emerging from the interplay between dissipative and Hamiltonian terms. Here we focus on the role of the geometry of the coupling between the system and the baths. In the specific we consider a dissipative boundary driven ladder in presence of a gauge field which can be implemented with ion microtraps arrays. We show that, depending on the geometry, the currents imposed by the baths can be strongly affected by the gauge field resulting in non-equilibrium phase transitions. In different phases both the magnitude of the current…
