Anomalous behavior detection is a challenging research area within computer vision. Progress in this area enables automated detection of dangerous behavior using surveillance camera feeds. A dangerous behavior that is often overlooked in other research is the throwing action in traffic flow, which is one of the unique requirements of our Smart City project to enhance public safety. This paper proposes a solution for throwing action detection in surveillance videos using deep learning. At present, datasets for throwing actions are not publicly available. To address the use-case of our Smart City project, we first generate the novel public 'Throwing Action' dataset, consisting of 271 videos of throwing actions performed by traffic participants, such as pedestrians, bicyclists, and car drivers, and 130 normal videos without throwing actions. Second, we compare the performance of different feature extractors for our anomaly detection method on the UCF-Crime and Throwing-Action datasets. The explored feature extractors are the Convolutional 3D (C3D) network, the Inflated 3D ConvNet (I3D) network, and the Multi-Fiber Network (MFNet). Finally, the performance of the anomaly detection algorithm is improved by applying the Adam optimizer instead of Adadelta, and proposing a mean normal loss function that covers the multitude of normal situations in traffic. Both aspects yield better anomaly detection performance. Besides this, the proposed mean normal loss function lowers the false alarm rate on the combined dataset. The experimental results reach an area under the ROC curve of 86.10 for the Throwing-Action dataset, and 80.13 on the combined dataset, respectively.

Automatic traffic accidents detection has appealed to the machine vision community due to its implications on the development of autonomous intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and importance to traffic safety. Most previous studies on efficient analysis and prediction of traffic accidents, however, have used small-scale datasets with limited coverage, which limits their effect and applicability. Existing datasets in traffic accidents are either small-scale, not from surveillance cameras, not open-sourced, or not built for freeway scenes. Since accidents happened in freeways tend to cause …

Optimized scene representation is an important characteristic of a framework for detecting abnormalities on live videos. One of the challenges for detecting abnormalities in live videos is real-time detection of objects in a non-parametric way. Another challenge is to efficiently represent the state of objects temporally across frames. In this paper, a Gibbs sampling based heuristic model referred to as Temporal Unknown Incremental Clustering (TUIC) has been proposed to cluster pixels with motion. Pixel motion is first detected using optical flow and a Bayesian algorithm has been applied to as…

The data storage has been one of the bottlenecks in surveillance systems. The conventional video compression algorithms such as H.264 and H.265 do not fully utilize the low information density characteristic of the surveillance video. In this paper, we propose a video compression method that extracts and compresses the foreground and background of the video separately. The compression ratio is greatly improved by sharing background information among multiple adjacent frames through an adaptive background updating and interpolation module. Besides, we present two different schemes to compress t…

Gun violence is a severe problem in the world, particularly in the United States. Deep learning methods have been studied to detect guns in surveillance video cameras or smart IP cameras and to send a real-time alert to security personals. One problem for the development of gun detection algorithms is the lack of large public datasets. In this work, we first publish a dataset with 51K annotated gun images for gun detection and other 51K cropped gun chip images for gun classification we collect from a few different sources. To our knowledge, this is the largest dataset for the study of gun dete…

The automatic identification system (AIS) and video cameras have been widely exploited for vessel traffic surveillance in inland waterways. The AIS data could provide the vessel identity and dynamic information on vessel position and movements. In contrast, the video data could describe the visual appearances of moving vessels, but without knowing the information on identity, position and movements, etc. To further improve vessel traffic surveillance, it becomes necessary to fuse the AIS and video data to simultaneously capture the visual features, identity and dynamic information for the vess…

Anomalous activity recognition deals with identifying the patterns and events that vary from the normal stream. In a surveillance paradigm, these events range from abuse to fighting and road accidents to snatching, etc. Due to the sparse occurrence of anomalous events, anomalous activity recognition from surveillance videos is a challenging research task. The approaches reported can be generally categorized as handcrafted and deep learning-based. Most of the reported studies address binary classification i.e. anomaly detection from surveillance videos. But these reported approaches did not add…
Foreground (FG) pixel labelling plays a vital role in video surveillance. Recent engineering solutions have attempted to exploit the efficacy of deep learning (DL) models initially targeted for image classification to deal with FG pixel labelling. One major drawback of such strategy is the lacking delineation of visual objects when training samples are limited. To grapple with this issue, we introduce a multi-view receptive field fully convolutional neural network (MV-FCN) that harness recent seminal ideas, such as, fully convolutional structure, inception modules, and residual networking. The…
With the development of deep neural networks, the performance of crowd counting and pixel-wise density estimation are continually being refreshed. Despite this, there are still two challenging problems in this field: 1) current supervised learning needs a large amount of training data, but collecting and annotating them is difficult; 2) existing methods can not generalize well to the unseen domain. A recently released synthetic crowd dataset alleviates these two problems. However, the domain gap between the real-world data and synthetic images decreases the models' performance. To reduce the g…
Realtime and intelligent video surveillance via camera networks involve computation-intensive vision detection tasks with massive video data, which is crucial for safety in the edge-enabled industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Multiple video streams compete for limited communication resources on the link between edge devices and camera networks, resulting in considerable communication congestion. It postpones the completion time and degrades the accuracy of vision detection tasks. Thus, achieving high accuracy of vision detection tasks under the communication constraints and vision task deadl…
Anomaly detection in surveillance videos has been recently gaining attention. A challenging aspect of high-dimensional applications such as video surveillance is continual learning. While current state-of-the-art deep learning approaches perform well on existing public datasets, they fail to work in a continual learning framework due to computational and storage issues. Furthermore, online decision making is an important but mostly neglected factor in this domain. Motivated by these research gaps, we propose an online anomaly detection method for surveillance videos using transfer learning and…
This work is in the field of video surveillance including motion detection. The video surveillance is one of essential techniques for automatic video analysis to extract crucial information or relevant scenes in video surveillance systems. The aim of our work is to propose solutions for the automatic detection of moving objects in real time with a surveillance camera. The detected objects are objects that have some geometric shape (circle, ellipse, square, and rectangle).
Video capture is the most extensively utilized human perception source due to its intuitively understandable nature. A desired video capture often requires multiple environmental conditions such as ample ambient-light, unobstructed space, and proper camera angle. In contrast, wireless measurements are more ubiquitous and have fewer environmental constraints. In this paper, we propose CSI2Video, a novel cross-modal method that leverages only WiFi signals from commercial devices and a source of human identity information to recover fine-grained surveillance video in a real-time manner. Surveillance video parsing, which segments the video frames into several labels, e.g., face, pants, left-leg, has wide applications. However,pixel-wisely annotating all frames is tedious and inefficient. In this paper, we develop a Single frame Video Parsing (SVP) method which requires only one labeled frame per video in training stage. To parse one particular frame, the video segment preceding the frame is jointly considered. SVP (1) roughly parses the frames within the video segment, (2) estimates the optical flow between frames and (3) fuses the rough parsing results warped by optical flow …

This paper strives for the detection of real-world anomalies such as burglaries and assaults in surveillance videos. Although anomalies are generally local, as they happen in a limited portion of the frame, none of the previous works on the subject has ever studied the contribution of locality. In this work, we explore the impact of considering spatiotemporal tubes instead of whole-frame video segments. For this purpose, we enrich existing surveillance videos with spatial and temporal annotations: it is the first dataset for anomaly detection with bounding box supervision in both its train and…

This research suggests using a weakly supervised strategy to avoid annotating anomalous segments in training videos, which is time consuming. In this approach only video level labels are used to obtain frame level anomaly scores. In modern intelligent video surveillance systems, automatic anomaly detection through computer vision analytics plays a pivotal role which not only significantly increases monitoring efficiency but also reduces the burden on live monitoring. Anomalies in videos are broadly defined as events or activities that are unusual and signify irregular behavior. The goal of anomaly detection is to temporally or spatially localize the anomaly events in video sequences. Temporal localization (i.e. indicating the start and end frames of the anomaly event in a video) is referred to as frame-level detection.…
