We consider sequences of polynomials that satisfy differential-difference recurrences. Polynomials satisfying such recurrences frequently appear as generating polynomials of integer valued random variables that are of interest in discrete mathematics. It is, therefore, of interest to understand the properties of such polynomials and their probabilistic consequences. We identify a class of polynomial recurrences that lead to a normal law with the expected value and the variance proportional to $n/\log n$ and $n/\log^2n$, respectively. Examples include Stirling number of the second kind and other polynomials concerning set partitions as well as polynomials related to Whitney numbers of Dowling lattices.
We consider a class of strongly q-log-convex polynomials based on a triangular recurrence relation with linear coefficients, and we show that the Bell polynomials, the Bessel polynomials, the Ramanujan polynomials and the Dowling polynomials are strongly q-log-convex. We also prove that the Bessel transformation preserves log-convexity.
The normality measure $\mathcal{N}$ has been introduced by Mauduit and S{á}rk{ö}zy in order to describe the pseudorandomness properties of finite binary sequences. Alon, Kohayakawa, Mauduit, Moreira and R{ö}dl proved that the minimal possible value of the normality measure of an $N$-element binary sequence satisfies $$ (1/2 + o(1)) \log_2 N \leq \min_{E_N \in \{0,1\}^N} \mathcal{N}(E_N) \leq 3 N^{1/3} (\log N)^{2/3} $$ for sufficiently large $N$. In the present paper we improve the upper bound to $c (\log N)^2$ for some constant $c$, by this means solving the problem of the asymptotic order of…
We exploit a result by Nerman which shows that conditional limit theorems hold when a certain monotonicity condition is satisfied. Our main result is an application to vertex degrees in random graphs, where we obtain asymptotic normality for the number of vertices with a given degree in the random graph ${G(n,m)}$ with a fixed number of edges from the corresponding result for the random graph ${G(n,p)}$ with independent edges. We also give some simple applications to random allocations and to spacings. Finally, inspired by these results, but logically independent of them, we investigate whethe…
We prove the log-concavity of the Fennessey-Larcombe-French sequence based on its three-term recurrence relation, which was recently conjectured by Zhao. The key ingredient of our approach is a sufficient condition for log-concavity of a sequence subject to certain three-term recurrence.
We present some necessary and/or sufficient conditions for the positivity problem of three-term recurrence sequences. As applications we show the positivity of diagonal Taylor coefficients of some rational functions in a unified approach. We also establish a criterion for the positivity and log-convexity of such sequences.
We consider the distribution of the major index on standard tableaux of arbitrary straight shape and certain skew shapes. We use cumulants to classify all possible limit laws for any sequence of such shapes in terms of a simple auxiliary statistic, aft, generalizing earlier results of Canfield--Janson--Zeilberger, Chen--Wang--Wang, and others. These results can be interpreted as giving a very precise description of the distribution of irreducible representations in different degrees of coinvariant algebras of certain complex reflection groups. We conclude with some conjectures concerning unimo…
In this paper, we use the framework of mod-$ϕ$ convergence to prove precise large or moderate deviations for quite general sequences of real valued random variables $(X_{n})_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$, which can be lattice or non-lattice distributed. We establish precise estimates of the fluctuations $P[X_{n} \in t_{n}B]$, instead of the usual estimates for the rate of exponential decay $\log( P[X_{n}\in t_{n}B])$. Our approach provides us with a systematic way to characterise the normality zone, that is the zone in which the Gaussian approximation for the tails is still valid. Besides, the residue f…
For a uniform random labelled tree, we find the limiting distribution of tree parameters which are stable (in some sense) with respect to local perturbations of the tree structure. The proof is based on the martingale central limit theorem and the Aldous--Broder algorithm. In particular, our general result implies the asymptotic normality of the number of occurrences of any given small pattern and the asymptotic log-normality of the number of automorphisms.
We consider a self-convolutive recurrence whose solution is the sequence of coefficients in the asymptotic expansion of the logarithmic derivative of the confluent hypergeometic function $U(a,b,z)$. By application of the Hilbert transform we convert this expression into an explicit, non-recursive solution in which the $n$th coefficient is expressed as the $(n-1)$th moment of a measure, and also as the trace of the $(n-1)$th iterate of a linear operator. Applications of these sequences, and hence of the explicit solution provided, are found in quantum field theory as the number of Feynman diagr…
We present an algorithm which computes the $D^{th}$ term of a sequence satisfying a linear recurrence relation of order $d$ over a field $K$ in $O( \mathsf{M}(\bar d)\log(D) + \mathsf{M}(d)\log(d))$ operations in $K$, where $\bar d \leq d$ is the degree of the squarefree part of the annihilating polynomial of the recurrence and $\mathsf{M}$ is the cost of polynomial multiplication in $K$. This is a refinement of the previously optimal result of $O( \mathsf{M}(d)\log(D) )$ operations, due to Fiduccia.
For a simple finite graph G denote by {G \brace k} the number of ways of partitioning the vertex set of G into k non-empty independent sets (that is, into classes that span no edges of G). If E_n is the graph on n vertices with no edges then {E_n \brace k} coincides with {n \brace k}, the ordinary Stirling number of the second kind, and so we refer to {G \brace k} as a graph Stirling number. Harper showed that the sequence of Stirling numbers of the second kind, and thus the graph Stirling sequence of E_n, is asymptotically normal --- essentially, as n grows, the histogram of ({E_n \brace k})_…
We consider functions of natural numbers which allow a combinatorial interpretation as density functions (speed) of classes of relational structures, s uch as Fibonacci numbers, Bell numbers, Catalan numbers and the like. Many of these functions satisfy a linear recurrence relation over $\mathbb Z$ or ${\mathbb Z}_m$ and allow an interpretation as counting the number of relations satisfying a property expressible in Monadic Second Order Logic (MSOL). C. Blatter and E. Specker (1981) showed that if such a function $f$ counts the number of binary relations satisfying a property expressible in MS…
We investigate coordination numbers of the cubic lattices with emphases on their analytic behaviors, including the total positivity of the coordination matrices, the distribution of zeros of the coordination polynomials, the asymptotic normality of the coefficients of the coordination polynomials, the log-concavity and the log-convexity of the coordination numbers.
This paper presents the log-concavity of the $m$-gonal figurate number sequences. The author gives and proves the recurrence formula for $m$-gonal figurate number sequences and its corresponding quotient sequences which are found to be bounded. Finally, the author also show that for $m\geq 3$, the sequence $\big \{S_n(m)\big\}_{n\geq 1}$ of $m$-gonal figurate numbers is a log-concave.
We study the limiting behavior of multiple ergodic averages involving sequences of integers that satisfy some regularity conditions and have polynomial growth. We show that for "typical" choices of Hardy field functions $a(t)$ with polynomial growth, the averages $\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N f_1(T^{[a(n)]}x)\cdot...\cdot f_\ell(T^{\ell [a(n)]}x)$ converge in the mean and we determine their limit. For example, this is the case if $a(t)=t^{3/2}, t\log{t},$ or $t^2+(\log{t})^2$. Furthermore, if ${a_1(t),...,a_\ell(t)}$ is a "typical" family of logarithmico-exponential functions of polynomial growth, …
We consider log-convex sequences that satisfy an additional constraint imposed on their rate of growth. We call such sequences log-balanced. It is shown that all such sequences satisfy a pair of double inequalities. Sufficient conditions for log-balancedness are given for the case when the sequence satisfies a two- (or more-) term linear recurrence. It is shown that many combinatorially interesting sequences belong to this class, and, as a consequence, that the above-mentioned double inequalities are valid for all of them.
The Catalan-Larcombe-French sequence $\{P_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ arises in a series expansion of the complete elliptic integral of the first kind. It has been proved that the sequence is log-balanced. In the paper, by exploring a criterion due to Chen and Xia for testing 2-log-convexity of a sequence satisfying three-term recurrence relation, we prove that the new sequence $\{P^2_n-P_{n-1}P_{n+1}\}_{n\geq 1}$ are strictly log-convex and hence the Catalan-Larcombe-French sequence is strictly 2-log-convex.
We present an approach to proving the 2-log-convexity of sequences satisfying three-term recurrence relations. We show that the Apery numbers, the Cohen-Rhin numbers, the Motzkin numbers, the Fine numbers, the Franel numbers of order 3 and 4 and the large Schroder numbers are all 2-log-convex. Numerical evidence suggests that all these sequences are k-log-convex for any $k\geq 1$ possibly except for a constant number of terms at the beginning.
